    I dont know if it was in the game when you reviewed, but you can actually split skirmish units off of main battle lines now to spread your forces better.

    This looks like my cup of tea,
    This is an example of why PC's will always be better than consoles, and no I'm not some PC elitist, I have a XB1 and a wii U and enjoy playing them for what they are but if your serious about gaming then it's PC all the way.

    Instead of the oblique maneuver, something you can do is issue a Fallback command to your unit at the flank. Then move them back into formation in the "L" shape that you desire. This holds your flank, and minimizes the losses. It's not quite the same thing, but I've used it moderately effectively in this game.

  • @gabratte9858
    @gabratte9858 7 лет назад +20

    mmh, the formation stuck in lines and the inability to oblique seem like major, major flaws to me in a strategy game, I'm surprised you didnt thumb it down. It must be great for you to get past this.
    One of your better reviews, very constructive :)

    I want to play an American Revolutionary War game. I'm talking 1775-1783, the Continental Army, France, Spain, Native Americans and Holland vs British Empire, Quebec, Holy Roman Empire, Native Americans. Several playable campaigns in North America and Europe, also naval warfare.

  • @michaelkreitzer1369
    @michaelkreitzer1369 7 лет назад +2

    I like the idea of simulating the tenuous control a commander has over his men in the heat of battle. If that's actually a feature and has an understandable mechanic I'd be all for it. I think I remember another game having a similar mechanic, but I can't remember it.

    Nice review mate, i have the Ultimate General Gettysburg, which i play now and again, I know of Darth Vader, who created UGG, from the mods he did on Total War. I'm from Gateshead by the way, I'm 50 btw, and still play a bit of Arma 3 and Medieval Kingdoms Total war now and again. And I enjoy listening to your reviews.

  • @kimlima2113
    @kimlima2113 7 лет назад +3

    Interesting game and review. Personally, I'd fancy even more flavour stuff, such as more permanent smoke on the battlefield (or morning mist), attack and panic screams, pipes, flags and the like. Of course, I am spoiled by BF1, but the atmosphere there is simply incredible when you have successfully stormed the enemy trench line in "Kaiserschlacht" and everybody is screaming, whistles are blowing and all men are rushing forward to the next sector, isn't it? That armosphere is what I would want here as well.

    • @SNIperofDARKness02
      @SNIperofDARKness02 7 лет назад +8

      Permanent Smoke? Of course how can I forget James Smith that fired his gun at the 6th Cavalry regiment during the battle of Gettysburg wounding a captain, you can still see his smoke to this day.

    • @buchan448
      @buchan448 7 лет назад +1

      LOL

    • @kimlima2113
      @kimlima2113 7 лет назад

      Holy smoke, that was a good one! Although my knowledge is admittedly rather limited, I allowed myself to jump to the conclusion that the typical battlefield of the 1860s was a rather cloudy area, where shells exploded and a lot of old school gun powder was burned. That may have led to decreased visibility which may add a realistic touch to the crystal clear sky of the game and make to battles more intense since even the player cannot see everything at once. By the way, please, would you mind teaching me how to express my point in a better way?

  • @ninofreuler7638
    @ninofreuler7638 7 лет назад +1

    Pretty sure it's a game mechanic. The brigades listen more to commands with higher level Generals, at least they do so in the updated version(s) of the game. I really enjoy the feature, it adds to the realism, as troops would get caught up in the chaos of the moment and miss commands, or decide to charge a wavering enemy, against orders.

  • @CAP198462
    @CAP198462 7 лет назад +5

    Purchased the game based on Mac's and some other RUclips reviews and I have developed a somewhat different opinion than Mack. In my play through I've seen whole units wiped out because of missed clicks leading to units charging positions rather than firing on them. The game's art style is a good mix of cartoon and realistic, and the general creation are nice features, but the selection issues are frustrating. If this gets mended the game will be worth it's price of £25.

    It's an exciting game. I'm a fan of Darth from as far back as Rome:Total War. Since it's still in beta I hope some factors will be improved. These are in addition to the several points made in the video.
    Here are some things I noted- Friendly fire. Ally units can, apparently, fire through friendly units without causing casualties.
    - Skirmishers detached from a unit can be used like far-ranging commandos without regard to the location of the parent unit. That seems ahistorical.
    -Exhausted units that continue moving suffer no attrition losses due to men falling out. Truly exhausted troops should drop like flies to the wayside.
    -The replenishment phase allows VETERAN replacements. Which theater of the war relinquished these experienced troops? In the first year of war, even? No way, no way!

    The south was the underdog and with lee was able to fight despite being basically ragtag roughneck army compared to the north. Its always more fun being the underdog in games and overcoming adversity by playing to win instead of playing on easy trying not to lose.

      2much Time Imo the AI completely saves the game for me. It's the only RTS out there with intelligent enough AI to have grand battles. Especially the campaign, playing as the Union at the battle of Gaines Mill when you're initially outnumbered 3-1 is epic, then finally your reinforcements arrive at the critical moment to save the battle. Seriously the campaign made me more attached to my army than ANY RTS ever. You care about your troops- almost like X-COM. The AI is so good man you're robbing yourself of a great experience.

  • @ShaunHaynam
    @ShaunHaynam 7 лет назад

    it would be nice to be able to draw brigade formations to refuse flanks and minimize the effect of flanking fire. I'm not sure the game is sophisticated enough to accommodate that. Also not sure the micro and heightened skill cap that would bring to the table is worth it. One thing I like about these games is that there is almost no manual dexterity required. Tactics and strategy rule the day as opposed to efficiency with the mouse and APM. It's a nice change of pace from traditional RTS and even the total war series that is this game's roots.

    The thing I didn't like the most is the resolution of the battle. I mean you have too many soldiers for the battles, which is way over than the real historical battles, and you see much less soldiers bots in the field. You see 2 lines shoot each other with almost no dead bodies in both sides. I wish it was more like in Total War. Also it will be good to add gatling guns, ironcluds and air baloons. Of course creating some mods to this game will be greate. I still bought it

    When I tried their previous game it looked like it could have become something but the controls coming from its mobile origin were quite useless. So I'm glad to see signs of improvement there and will have to have a look, at least when it's released. Can't help to expect disappointment, but if indeed it is that much more improved I'd love to see more games of the same type. Maybe based on the 30 years war or something similar.
