- The day is 17th of September 1862. The confederate forces are out numbered, but hold strategic defenses. They must hold against Union attack and defend Sharpsburg. This is the battle of Antietam. Enjoy the Battle :D

In this game, to be an efficient commander, you MUST remain aware of what is going on upon the battlefield.
This means noticing when a regiment is completely surrounded, when an objective is taken, and when reinforcements arrive.
"We needed you like an hour ago!" They technically showed up an hour ago, you just didn't notice the notification...
Useful tip, press f (fallback) when u want a unit pulling back without offering its back to the ennemy. You lost a lot of men that way.

Hey Pixel, my main man, my best bud. It's really great to see you play this game, it's fantastic. It's also great to see you're learning all the quirks as you play, such as how good trees are. If you haven't played the campaign, I recommend you do so, it's great. But I'm sure you have.
Would you allow me to give you a few tips? I will anyway.
1. Keep your generals closer to your lines, so when men break they are getting a morale boost. If they start running away, send the general over there ASAP so they recover quicker and return to the fight.
2. Get your guns closer to your lines too. At a certain range they switch to canister shot automatically. You'll see the impact turns to lots of small hits, and you know how deadly canister is. Long range guns are pretty worthless in this game so you must get them closer.
3. Use the "Fall back" command, to pull brigades back, instead of turning them around. Turning your back to the enemy is devastating to morale.
4. You can indeed detatch and re-attach skirmishers, with the same button. But you have to have the main part of the brigade selected.
5. The "Blocked" text simply means there is another friendly brigade in the way of the units line of sight.
6. Supplies. You can indeed capture and then use enemy supplies. And if you look at how full the bar in the bottom left is, that tells you how much supplies they have left. Same with a unit's ammo, morale and condition.
7. Check a unit's condition before trying to charge. If they're tired, they'll fail.
I really hope you read this, though you may well have worked all this out by now anyway.

Glad I ran into your video about the battle of Antietam. This is by far the hardest battle I had to complete, but after watching this, it helped understand another way to win playing on the confederate side. Thanks man.

Cool--Sharpsburg is an incredible battlefield, I've been there twice. It's amazing how the field has seemingly changed so little since 1862. The second time I was there I was on my way back from participating in a re-enactment at Gettysburg--it was over 100 degrees that day, so I took my shoes off and waded in the creek next to Burnside's Bridge to cool off. Wool uniforms are not ideal in the summer!
This battle is pretty hard.
I did it in the campaign and I had to replay it 2 or 3 times to get a victory. I had 60k soldiers to the union's 110k. Ended up with 20k casualties to their 60k and only won by barely retaking the sunken road at the end.

Well your the only person I’ve saw win on historical as CSA. Prob explains why nobody else makes a historical battle video of Antietam. Good job! I was beginning to believe victory on historical was impossible but you did it!

I still liked the Gettysburg version of Ultimate General. That was my first experience of a total war type of game.

i love strategy and games so that's the perfect game 4 me
when you have the enemy in a pocket like earlier in the battle the best way to deal with it is charging. You actually don't charge enough. It should be your goto when you have a decisive advantage or need to break through somewhere.

Sin this battle I went back and formed all my troops in Sharpsburg when it was available and used my cavalry to capture the required victory points with like two seconds left it was super clutch the AI decided to only attacking the city

Apollo, when Hooker was put in charge of the Army before Chancellorsville, he set about trying to make the soldiers lives as nice as he could while they were being "retrained and equipped", which included access to women. These women became known as "Hookers", because they were "requested" by Hooker and his staff to go wherever the Army was camped. They were also given the name of "camp followers" by the local citizens, who very much hated this.

The map is so realistic it's increadbly impressive my family has a huge connection to the civil war my great great ect. Uncle Was "Jackson (Stone wall) Thomas" I'm greatly proud of my ancestors not every day you find out your related to some one famous but the map and the way the troops where set up was so realistic along with the church (that little building in the fork of the road) the cornfield was my favorite part you have good content man keep going

Hi Apollo. You might need to get a look at a new game announced called "Holdfast : Nations at War". It's a tactical realistic third-person shooter based on 1809. There are two factions completed right now : Britain and France.
And more is expected...
Just watched their trailer, pretty epic.
The 51st Division Indeed, the naval battles and the destructible environment makes this game a promising one.

Great vid, but in the civil war, the confederacy actually knew they were going to lose. The only reason they held the creek was to slow down the union advance so that confederate reinforcements could get there. If the union would have crushed them before the reinforcements could come the Army of Virginia would have been so depleated that the civil war would have been virtually over. Sorry for geeking out.
God damn this is a beautiful game. U should do a thing where u do a battle in this, then do the same battle in empire or napoleon total war (same-ish units and terrain) I think that be cool
There is a huge Civil War mod for Napoleon Total War. He already played the Battle of Antietam, using this civil war mod for napoleon total war :) Just check for his old videos.

That is indeed a true story about Hooker. They say he was a tad alcoholic and he let the men have prostitutes like you said, dubbed Hooker's girls.

I can destroy them on my campaign battle. But on historical I can’t hold them back for nothing!! Once they drive me out of the woods with sheer numbers it goes downhill. It’s impossible to hold back the bridge advance too as you found out. It seems they just automatically cross bridge no matter what you do.

Your neglect of your tops in the north really ticked me off.
Agung I am talking about the infantry units he left in the north doing nothing,the cavalry as well but mostly the infantry,while the Union forces had all their forces south

The Union declared a tactical victory, but Lee walked out with less casualties and stronger moral support from his troops. The Union on the other hand had their commander fired later on. So I think it was inconclusive.
The decision to declare this a Union victory is based on the historical standard where the loss goes to whichever side leaves first.
Less than 500 men brigades are borderline useless i mean you can have 1 or 2 because you run out of recruits but if your entire army is less than 1000 man brigades you should get rid of some of those lesser brigades and reinforce others

Apollo love the vid but I have some tips...
1. Read the victory objectives
2. Use those objective and focus on defending them (you wasted a lot of time and troops on the bridge. Instead reinforcements should have went to the town which is a VICTORY victory point)
If the AI wasn't potato they would have won by just running into the town. Good defense and u had nobody there

Actually, the term 'hooker' predates the civil war. The best guess is that the term is for one that 'hooks' their customer.

how do u get Napoleon total war I can't find it
Dude i get this game is great and about strategy, but is this the closest you can get to the field? I mean the troop movements are great, but i can barely see the units
you can zoom in a lot closer, when i play i am almost always zoomed in i almost never am zoomed out by much, otherwise is to much to look at and you feel over whelmed, i use my mini map to move about and check different areas of the battle

Not bad,but you really need to slow down and pause a bit more an take stock of positions and hold what you are told to hold,it is not total war need a bit thinking,when to be pushing and holding,cant mob every thing,but once you get the hang of it you should do better.Oh aye read a wee bit more about the actual battles,position an commanders.

at the end results with the generals if you scroll down you can see the total troops brought to battle for infantry, artillery and cav, and below that is the number missing(captured) wounded/dead for infantry cav and artillery, it also tell you then number of artillery guns lost, it tells you this for your side and theirs.
