    As a Filipino, I never thought my double lids attractive. It's just... there. Has always been and most Filipinos have it. It was the norm for me.
    I only heard about this double lid obsession from Japan and South Korea. I was actually quite shocked about this, because what I find beautiful in a face, is not just the eyes, it's the face as a whole, how all parts work together.

      Probably they don't give rubber chewing toys to their children like we do, also their food are softer in general than european roasted meat and traditional bread with chewy crust. So that baby toy could solve the problem and save money.

    I'm not so happy about this trend. Japan's depression rate among the youth is already pretty high so adding this trend on top of it will just make things worse.
    However, I wouldn't shun those who have these "ideal traits" as I have seen some people in the US shame those who naturally have certain rare body features. But as you stated, it's up to you whether or not you want to get this surgery. I just don't like how some parents make their kids get double eyelid surgery or social media destroying someone's self-esteem.

      That's a really excellent point you made!!! People are putting down the ones who fit their cultures beauty standard because they think thats how they can raise their self esteem. They're obviously still insecure with their looks because *real secure/confident people dont put down others and don't rely on others for validation!* This is happening in my home country Phillipines because brown skin is seen as ugly and white skin is seen as beautiful in our culture because of colonisation. The brown skin filipinos are putting down white skin filipinos because they think that's how they'll raise their self esteem. They changed their point of view of themselves when they learned that Europeans tan their skin to look prettier. They think Europeans are trying to look Asian and "exotic." Actually the real reason Europeans tan their skin is because like my fashion history teacher told me. Tan skin is a symbol of wealth because it meant this person has a lot of money to "travel." That belief is still believed in many European cultures, including the West i.e America, Canada and Australia.

    If I was Japanese and I was surrounded around mono lids, I could understand the want to be beautiful, otherworldly, etc. but to the outside world, where western countries don’t see many mono lids, I find them so beautiful and unique to Asians.

    • @livinlicious
      @livinlicious 2 года назад +10

      That is arguably not really true. Beauty might be on an individual level subjective, but on a big scale it can be quantified. Thats why all models, celebrities etc, all basically look "the same".
      Its statistically more beautiful to have double lid. Monolid is shown to be less attractive in ALL cultural groups that are tested. Its like saying, crocked teeth are beautiful, when normally people have straight teeth. Thats not the case, crocked teeth are always less attractive than straight teeth.
      For eyes its probably a very complex reason, maybe having to do with mixed biology (most double lid asians are mixed, white+asian, etc.), there are very few pure asian double lided people. Whatever the case is, its still not AS beautiful as doublelid, so the people tend to go for the surgery to improve it. The same as braces (when you dont have naturally straight teeth), breasts (when you have small or no boobs) etc.
      Attractivness and beauty can be measured, and we have a pretty good idea what is understood as attractive in psychology.

    • @LowFrequency
      @LowFrequency 2 года назад +5

      @@livinlicious You grow up with what you see, people who like mono lids are grown differently, and have been observing different comparative imagery and differ in taste of overall physiognomy!
      When we are young as children during our cognitive function development we tend to adjust to a specific taste to what we see and we normally hear what is basically called beautiful by others and magazines, newspaper movies etc. Heaped all into one from everything we observe we see reactions how and what other people evaluate as cute or beautiful.
      Might have ever wondered why some people have weird tastes? Well, that's because their circumstances were different, it is not their taste weird but also such people with are weird themselves, watching and observing different things from the vast majority.
      People with weird taste are very rare even to a group of other weirdos, people who do have such a history tend to even have special music, movie or nature/weather preferences that is disparate of what we normally observe.

    My husband has single eyelids and he told me that he got bullied a lot for it. It's so bizarre to me because I find his eyes so beautiful. He doesn't have "small eyes", but their shape is like an almond. His under eyelid is quite plump as well, which accentuates it. When he smiles or laughs, his eyes do disappear a bit in a quarter moon shape like those small BN biscuits for any French speakers out there. I find it so cute and endearing.
    He told me that his classmates and even his professors would make fun of him for it, asking him: "Are your eyes open? Can you even see? Yah, open your eyes!". It is messed up that even adults enforce that idea on kids. He also told me that in Korea, people with round eyes are said to come from the south, while people with the "small" elongated eyes are said to have northern blood. His face is very northern and he looks like a Mongol. It's great for me as I find their features to be more masculine, in my opinion.

    • @sleepyhead6468
      @sleepyhead6468 2 года назад +3

      Yep. The single eyelid feature is mostly from Northeast Asia from the ancient Yellow river in China(original Han Chinese peoples) and the other ethnic groups North of them. The reason why people say that Southerners have double eyelids is because Southern China used to be populated by non-Han peoples. They were mostly native peoples closer to the peoples that you see in Southeast Asia today(think Thai, Philippines, Malays, Vietnamese etc). Then in ancient times, the Han peoples along the yellow river were far more advanced and civilised than the Southern natives and what happened was that over a period of thousands of years, Southern China slowly but surely got assimilated and sinicised into the Han Chinese culture. Many Han Chinese men invaded and migrated to Southern China in large masses and killed off mostly the native men in the South. Then they married off native women to the migrant Han Chinese men which resulted in the mixed population of Southern Chinese. Some of these mixed populations were entirely resettled up to the Northern/Central parts of China in ancient times due to the emperor wanting to pacify and maintain control over the Southern lands. After thousands of years, native genes of the South got mixed quite significantly into the Northern gene pool so you get some peoples that look more like Southeast Asians while others look more like the typical Northeast Asians. As for why Northern Asians evolved this single eyelid features, I am not entirely sure but I think it has got to do with the cold. Also, it's actually not only the eyes. It's the entire skull structure that is different in Northeast Asians that caused the single eyelids. Northeast Asians tend to have a straighter side profile from the top of the forehead down to the bottom of the eyes. This means the brow bone do not stick out as much and the eyes are not deep set. As a result, there isn't a fold along the upper eyelid. Southeast Asians have protruding foreheads and brow bones and deep set eyes so most have double eyelids.

    I was always curious about the evolution of single eyelids and double eyelids. I don't really feel concerned about the aesthetics of it since both look fine to me.
    What intrigues me is why some humans developed single eyelids overtime while others developed double eyelids. Certain physical features in humans aren't present merely by accident after all. They exist because there was some sort of natural benefit to it.
    I also think that this biological perspective makes it easier for me to appreciate the uniqueness of different physical features in different ethnic groups. To me it's like these features are trying to tell a story of where these ethnicities come from and what enviromental and biological factors shaped them into how they look today.

    • @commentarytalk1446
      @commentarytalk1446 2 года назад +51

      If I remember correctly, single-eyelid or slit-eyes was an adaptation during ice-age isolation of a group/(s) of humans and possibly in mountains to SNOW BLINDNESS. This caused a BOTTLE-NECK in the gene pool of these humans thus forming the modern MONGOLOID lineage in Asians today with this feature. Also present lower Sexual Dimorphism and narrower hips etc.
      I think in terms of attractiveness, it really just depends: Both can look attractive depending on the individual and their inner personality as well as looks and relationship or connection. I can understand why people might want the visible eyelids (double seems a misnomer to me - like a bird or reptile which DO have double eyelids!), to come across with bigger eyes and thus this large eye space is immediately arresting to people. However the narrower eyes comes across as attractive to people too, a subtle face full of mystery for example that can then become appealing over time if not more immediately.
      I think it is negative to have surgery on the body because it is mentally unhealthy (various mental health studies seem to indicate this generally). It is good to develop a positive self-image of you are as you combined with healthy living eg fitness and healthy thinking eg practicing good values.

    One eyelid or 2 eyelids, it doesn't really matter. Both are attractive. It all depends for the individual. For some people 1 eyelids are attractive for other people double eyelids are attractive. Get what YOU want to look how YOU want.
    When you change your appearance because of sociaty or parents, then it's a problem.
    If the majority of society say that double eyelids are more attractive than the one eyelids, then are you really gonna change your appearance to satisfy the society pickiness or are you gonna satisfy yourself and be happy to express/show to the world/society the appearance YOU want/wish to have, so that way people can see the true YOU?

    I think many Japanese have natural big eyes.... Even before surgery without double eyelid, they still look big. Many Japanese look like Southeast Asian.
    I'm from Mongolia and everyone here has monolids and small eyes because we are from the north, it is so cold close to Siberia.
    Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital in the world.
    Our eyes are adaptation to cold climates, to protect against freezing winds. Same with native North Siberian, Inuit people etc.
    That is why people from north have smaller eyes.
    All eyes are beautiful. Big or small or double eyelid or not it shouldn't matter.

    I was born with double eye lids and never thought much about it. When I started seeing products for contacts making your eyes bigger and creating a double lid I thought it was silly at first. The pursuit of beauty is present in all cultures and there are always trends. If people want surgery it's their choice. But it is still surgery which can be dangerous and it's up to each individual if it's worth the risk.
    If tomorrow, women woke up and decided they really liked their bodies, just think how many industries would go out of business.

    Literally no one is talking about SELF ACCEPTANCE. Let's not talk about plastic surgery being "fine" if people feel confident by it. Instead let's talk about accepting yourself the way you are,that's most important. People wouldn't have created something called "plastic surgery" if only, people would have not been affected by other's disheartening comments about their looks. Be confident in who you are whether you are fat,mono or double eyelid,skinny,weird,clumsy or who does not fit in your country's stereotypical view. You are enough, just the way you are.

      China is roughly 50-70% double eyelid, 30-50% monolid. As a rule, Chinese from Southern China tend to have double eyelids, those from Northern China tend to have monolids
      Korea is like 90-95% monolids, 5-10% double eyelid. Same stats throughout the country
      Japan is basically 60-70% monolid, 30-40% double eyelid. Central Honshu people tend to have monolids. The farther you go from Central Honshu, the percentage of double eyelids increase.
      Southeast Asia are 90-95% double eyelid.

Asian eyes tend to look more “edgy” like a rockstar look. But in Japan being “cute” is the ideal look so that is why they want to change their eyes. As someone with monolids who is not east Asian, I frequently get asked if I’m an east Asian. It’s more common here to have double eyelids naturally so having monolids here paired with a brighter complexion will be associated to being east Asian. When my eyelids went double (I can switch between the two by pinching the skin between my eyes and blinking) I honestly thought I looked older, so I would unwrinkle my eyes and return to single. This is just for me though.
    Also, does anyone else get triple eyelids when they wake up?

    I thought about it for a bit. I concluded that the eyelids themselves do not matter when it comes to how cute someone is, the whole face has to be right. In very may cases this kind of surgery would in my opinion greatly improve the face. I think the confidence gained from perceiving oneself prettier outweighs all the risks and side effects of well performed surgery.

    Some of the most attractive and elegent people I have met are japanese. I have a male friend that has amazing eyes (yes, single eyelid) but the shape/form is beautiful, he looks like a painting to me. Funny that the first thing he told me (a mexican woman) is that I have huge beautiful eyes.

    This was interesting to hear..but it just makes me sad. The eyes are the window to the soul. We should all be able to appreciate the beauty that alone holds. Social Media is ruining the uniqueness we all hold. We aren't all the same. But that IS what makes us beautiful. 🌺Japan...the world has spoken in these comments..YOU'RE ALL BEAUTIFUL THE WAY YOU ARE!!🌺

    In Japan, few fashion models and actresses have undergone plastic surgery. Traditionally, there is a tacit understanding that models and actresses should not be fake. When you see it with your own eyes you'll understand. Even in the case of pop idol groups and glamor models, not many people undergo plastic surgery. The same can be said for ordinary people. It's the same as Japanese people don't have tattoos. However, In the case of porn star, one out of five have plastic surgery. If you need double eyelids in Japan, massage or push it up your eyes. Orthopedic surgery is the last resort.
    Fall into three principal categories in Japan. Botox injections/Hyaluronic acid injection, Permanent hair removal and spots/acne removal. Japan is scalpel hardly used. no-scalpel procedure. Worldwide, surgical operations account for about 40%, but in Japan only 15.4%. The number of plastic surgery in Japan is only 2.3% of the plastic surgery performed in the world, but more than 10% of non-surgical surgery is performed in Japan. Most common cosmetic surgery in Japan is hair removal, Japanese women have no armpit hair, arm hair, or leg hair.

    Crazy how the things that make us different makes us feel insecure and ugly when to others it is what they find most beautiful in us. Being happy with yourself as you are is most important before any surgery or you will never be happy.

    I try to accept that some people may feel this way, but it still sort of blows my mind..!
    Personality and intellect first - the rest is secondary 🙏
    EDIT: I honestly don't know how I feel about double eyelid. On one hand, it looks pretty sloppy when it layers, but on the other hand, I was born this way, and I'm not about to have surgery for it since I most likely will be frustrated with the results within a year anyway.
    Single lid looks nice! It's like... just the right amount of eyelid, since it doesn't fold over itself. At the same time, it makes the gaze look focused and sharp (like you have your wits about you, and you have your head in the game (of life))..!
    Regardless, you still have beautiful eyelashes, and wonderful eyes that peer into the world from behind your eyelids! Perfect just the way you are! 🙏

    I guess its more like Japanese or Asian people typically want bigger set of eyes because they see beauty in that and having a double eyelid helps with that thus why Asian people would get a cosmetic surgery for it. Im Asian too and have a double eyelid as well no wonder my eyes look a lil bigger than your typically Asian eyes.

    もし手術前の方が綺麗だった、自然だったと言われても、本人からすれば二重瞼であることの方がよっぽど重要です。
    私の母は高校生の頃に手術なしで自力で二重瞼にしたようですが、二重瞼の母の方がとても美しいです。

    In my country, I don't see that is a big deal but it still exist. People tend to focus more on the nose and the jaw. As a matter of fact, that we all get affected by the American cultures through movies and books.

    I definitely think double eyelids is prettier. The examples shown didn't look unnatural which is one of the big issues with plastic surgery. Many plastic surgery operations push people into uncanny valley and they end up looking worse off for it. The funny thing is that I don't know a single man who doesn't find plastic surgery outputting or ugly and I have a feeling that the benefit to women from it is coming from an improvement to self esteem rather than looks. I have also noted that beauty standards are very much internalized among women themselves which leads to very misinformed assumptions about how pretty they are seen as by men. I think it's important that Japanese women know that they are quite beautiful already (but I do wonder how such a message could be sent, I certainly would be in no place to spread it) as they seem to have severe and, from an outsider perspective, puzzling self confidence issues which no doubt hinder them in the rest of their life. It would be worthwhile for women focus less on the cultivation of idealised beauty and instead cultivate their personality, or better yet if they want to benefit society and pursue fulfilment rather than fleeting happiness; get married and have 15 kids.

      @Harkz0r 2 года назад

      Very true with what you mentioned about internalised beauty standards. I can understand and appreciate that women want to look good for themselves before anything else, but at the same time, isn't a judgment of, or dissatisfaction with the way you look always driven on some level by how you think you're seen by other people? Even if only subconsciously? If you were alone then you wouldn't have any reason to care about how attractive you are or aren't, or at least I wouldn't, as long as I was healthy. I guess it's a complex issue.
      For my own preferences, light/natural-looking makeup is fine, but too much of it is somewhat offputting to me, and any visibly discernible _cosmetic_ plastic surgery is not great either. In some cases such as deformities it may be necessary, but I see a lot of women getting facial alterations or breast size alterations and in those situations the 'before' is very nearly always better looking than the 'after', and I find myself wishing they had been satisfied enough with themselves not to subject their bodies to invasive procedures for a net negative result.
      I can honestly say single/double eyelids is something I never really thought of, since I live in England. I wouldn't say one looks better than the other. A lot of the Japanese women with monolids just look cute to me. Hopefully not many are wasting time thinking about this too much.
