Finally somone with some sense I like that he gave a time stamp all the other video got ass whole telling there life story when we trying to turn off the water
My shower wouldn’t turn off this morning and the knob just kept spinning. I was freaking out. I came across your video and was able to find my main water valve in seconds. Thank you for making this video.
Finally the right answer. This has got to be the smartest Plumber on U-tuve. He get's the question asked. The Meter Shut off valve that belines to the city is not your main shut off valve for your home Utube Plumber s. Thank you, so much for being, not only a plumber, but a thinker. I know it is not your fault that the people, in charge of directing us to the right responders don't have a clue.
@@Anyhourservices hi, why can't you turn it off there if you can't find the one at the house? Especially if water is gushing everywhere and you can't hesitate.
If you can't find the one inside and it is an emergency, I would shut it off at the meter ... and I wouldn't hesitate to do it. But, if you have time to look for the main shut off in the house, I think it is a good thing for everyone living in the house to know where it is.
@@Anyhourservices I know where main shut off is in house, did not know which direction to turn knob, I did not have correct device to turn off meter outside niether did the nearest depo. Plus it was freezing. It was not an emergency yet. I was trying to prevent one. Thabks
Fantastic help thanks! Spend an hour under my house looking for shut off valves to a bathtub that didn't exsist and failing to find the main shut off as well until I found your video! Somebody buy this man a beer!
Thank you so much for this video. My BELOVED Husband passed away in May 2022 and I was at a loss to change a bathroom cabinet and sink. Now going to see if you have anything on how to do THAT!
Thank you so much. The water got turned off of a deceased grandparents house due to a leak. I got it cut back on, but the water company didn't turn the master valve to turn it back on, even though they activated the water again. Someone on that contracted to check out the leak issue turn off the master valve I didn't detail that to me, so I haven't had water for almost a week, and have been trying to figure out how to get it turned back on, finding that Master valve.
Ours was at the water leak monitor in the garage. This was very informative. Unfortunately we also didn't have internet service to view this so it took a few minutes to remember & locate! We had a broken water line outside but found a plumber who was able to come out to repair the following day. We're in Texas, under deep freeze for the week! Still have no water but managing looking forward to warmer days!
Most helpful video! Within seconds, I knew how to turn off the water valve. To the point. Thank you. Other videos not helpful in emergency situations because so long and useless .
I'd like to know how to install a main shutoff valve, because my home doesn't have one and the one near the street is locked by the city.....no one has a video about that....only replacing one or finding one
I wish you also showed to us shutting off the one before that, b/c my problem is a leak before the main shut off and after the one close to the street. Explanation is great, though.
Thanks that was helpful. I could turn my water off with my tap-type valve previously. The water company has had contractors replacing their valve outside my property (blocking my car in). Now I can't turn off my water with my stop tap. Could the two be linked?
Does shutting off the water supply effect your water heater? I'm installing a new line for a water hose on the side of my house and I'm not sure if cutting the water off to the water heater is dangerous with the flame inside going or will it effect it in any way
Water meter on the street is 250 feet away on the next block. Following a straight line there is a hose bib. There is 30 feet to the mobile home and a septic tank back there besides. I'm having a feeling that there is no shutoff valve to the house.
Contact your local water companies. It is illegal in alot of States to mess with turning your main water source off from the street. The city owns those water meters. And it takes a locked in key to turn them off properly. Also if you have the new type. U need the magnet cover to reset the pressure when turning it off and on. U can get big fines. How do I know this? My neighbor turned his water off with one of those keys they sale at Home depot and he broke the valve. He was fined 35k and had to pay serious thousands more to the city to fix what he broke.
Omg your video was more informative then any other I've watched n I watched alot... The diagrams where you explained how it works from the start n why.. exactly what I needed the full story n now I understand and it makes sense.. Thank you so much you've saved me alot of time...
This is a topic I have told myself once a week this year to figure out, and I’m finally doing it with a few hours remaining. Hopefully I don’t need the info in 2022 either 😅
For my hose, I follow the water pipe coming in from outside and then there’s another spigot inside the basement with the old circular handle shown in the video. But right next to that on the right hand side is another one and no spigot. Beyond that is the main shutoff. I have tried to turn the circular handle to the right of the indoor spigot but I can’t get it to move, and it only slightly turns counterclockwise. So is it ok if I do use a wrench to turn it clockwise? And it is always clockwise to shut it off? Thank you.
I don't know where the water line is. I've never seen it marked outside anywhere on the sidewalk (small downtown city, row house, no yards). My basement is filled with junk thanks to my hoarder ex and there's so many different pipes down there, and valves (which I tried all I found and they all sprayed water out), so I'm lost. I've got a leaking bathroom sink that I have to fix on my own. I live on disability and can't afford a plumber. I guess if it gets extreme I'll have to call 911.
I couldnt find shit and water was going everywhere, I was so scared what my next water bill would be 😩, so I burnt down my house. Luckily my insurance company is paying out so that I can pay to get a new one built. Don't think I should have an issue like this for many years now.
Don't trust those old crusty interior shut-off valves. Sometimes if you mess with them, you will bite off way more than you can chew. Always have plumber replace it. It is a one-time deal that will save you massive headaches and $$$ in the long-run!
If no one is going to be in the home to use the water, it wouldn't hurt anything. I personally don't but if your plumbing system and water heater are old, you could turn off the water and open a tap to relieve the pressure.
@@Anyhourservices Yes. My water heater failed in 2018, luckily 30 secs before I left home so I was able to turn the water off with my stop tap which was working at that time. It isn't now hence my visit to this video. Thanks.

This is true. Even though you can shut it off at the meter, if you can avoid it, you shouldn't shut it off there. Thanks for watching and commenting.

What about ones outside the house?
Yes, some parts of the country it is outside the house. Here in Utah they are inside because of the freeze potential.
Just put a wrench on it, what can go wrong?
