- Every capable person in a household should know how to shut the water off in the event of a plumbing issue or emergency. In today's video, we will identify where the whole home shut-off valve can be found and how to shut the water off at the meter box in the event of a failed whole home shut-off valve.
Yay, finally a video easy to understand for the regular guy next door .Thanks!
Thanks for your common-sense, fairly non-technical explanation for this non-plumber! I now feel fully confident that I can shut off my water in both the garage and at the street site.
Just had to turn off water to our house cause a pipe burst somewhere and was causing flooding. Really really good video 👍
thanks.. .I couldn't locate my main water shut off valve... but I can see the water meter with valve in my front lawn.
I was looking to how to open that metal round cover first... now you showed me how to do it LOL!!! thank you! I am on the way to Homedepot.
Thank you. You are the first to show me how to shut off what I think is my only main shut off. I have my meter in my house I guess.
I’ve been wondering what the difference was, thanks! I’m the handy woman in our home😄 Now I can “attempt“ to repair the tub faucet!
I like the pro tip of using the key itself to move that heavy meter cover!
Thank you so much! This helped me to find the water source for my home until I could fix this crazy leak in my bathroom at 5am.
Many thanks for the straightforward instructions!
Just to add to this excellent video:
Sometimes, its half a turn, rather than just a quarter turn
This video helped me out greatly, thanks a lot. I absolutely mean it!
Should you turn a faucet on before turning the main water supply on to make sure you’re easing pressure on the line?
they were doing underground wiring near my house and decided to fill my meter box with dirt YAY!!!...... glad i noticed now
I have ALL the keys and wrenches and pliers- I know this much- after some horrors (and a long time ago, working in direct sales for TWC, and thinking, hmm- keys are handy- *use in a legally and necessarily appropriate manner- but I am no one's judger)- thanks- lots of helpful info! A FLOOD is a mess-
Why do I have two pipes going into garage from hose nib area? One is a 1/4 turn ball like you said, the other has a gate like you showed, but the knob just spins and spins, doesn't do anything! Both pipes come from ground in front, one has a hose nib, but both also go into garage. The 1/4 turn ball one works.
Thanks for the video. I need to turn off water prior to fixing my Kohler bathtub shower knob. I have a valve above my w heater, which I can shut off. Where in the valve for cold water source for the house? Ty
Does every house have a secondary shut off value in the garage? We have a shut off value in the house above the hot water heater?
Is there any trick if it's hard to turn on or off (main one at the street)?
It's first week of November n frozen outside. What do I do if I didn't shut the water off to outside
Thank you for the great information.
I have 4 shut offs. I water main, water main in the flowerbed close to the house, sprinkler main value and zone backflow. Yeah. I am trying to find out what kind of handle to get for the one closest to to house? Any idea.
Great video ! Thank you ! 🪛🪛🪛🛠🛠🛠🔧🔧🔧💦💦💦
Thanks, another very useful video with great info, especially for us new to AZ.
Can confirm it's the same for Las Vegas NV residents
What state does this apply to? There's no house in my area where this applies to except for the street valve.
This looks like Arizona. Most of this doesn't apply to where I live in NC.
LAUGHING MY ASS OFF WATCHING THIS VIDEO. I live in New England.
I'm about to see if this applies in NV
Can confirm it's the same for Las Vegas NV residents
Just out of curiosity. If you was going to shut the water off too the house with the methods described in this video to switch out a faucet should you also shut your hot water tank off?
Great video ! When shutting main valve the hot water will still go in the house until the heater tank empty? I need to replace faucet but the stuck valve and want to be prepared if I break it how long will the water leak.. lol
how did it go? i have a same problem.
@@tifi4220 I shut the main valve both cold and hot was stopped
But if it’s due to your under the sink shutoff it will still leak after the HW Heater empties but only it would be cold water?
Great helpful video. How can you determine if a second shut off valve exists in my home? Beyond the main shut off valve managed by the city meter location. Would the city where i live know if and where there is a second shut off valve? For homes with no basements in the south central region.
I’m in Florida. Our main shit off is on the sidewalk. It is accessible to the homeowner
quick question,
The county just did road work and new sidewalks.
They actually poured concrete over the water box, so now I need them to break up the concrete to find the valve so I can change over the valve inside the house
to a ball valve or similar. If there is a problem in the house I would be in trouble.
Any ideas on how to locate the water box under concrete.
Thanks Lanny
Wow. Did you get it worked out?
Very nice video. Great info and quality of image.
In the room where my water heater is there is a large ball valve. I'm wondering if it's just to shut off the water to the water heater or if it's to shut off the water to the house. It's a modular home and the water heater is in the end of the house where water enters the property.
Mine just shuts off the water heater.
What size meter key did you use? And how do you know what size you would need?
I think the one you see here are all the same size. Go look for that one.....
Ur the best!! Lady approved video!! Good asic instructions
Would love more of these informative/ how to videos !
How do I replace a multi - turn valve? Best to get a plumber if I don't know what I'm doing? 😅 You were right- we've never used ours in 20 years, and first time we tried to turn it, it broke!!😒
I went to my meter box to shut off water to the house. I had my key ready, but when I opened the box there, I did not see a standard valve. All I saw was the pentagon-shaped nut. I am still not sure what this is or nor what to do in order to shut off water. Any advice??
Congratulations on being the hottest guy to ever demonstrate how to turn off a water supply.
Solid observation
Ha! 😆
You need to get out more. 😅
Thirsty for no reason. Dude looks like Jimmy Neutron. Seek help.
That not the case anywhere near my area of Texas. We only have a water meter key.
When I shut the water off at the meter I still get a trickle of water not much. Should I call the water company to look at it
Can you turn the valve off at the street by hand?
Depends, but a adjustable wrench sometimes can work
@@user-xw7ni7jf9s Thanks, I can't get it to turn with my curb key.
@@nickyonstilts128Home Depot sells the keys to the street. I know this is old and your situation is most likely resolved but for others
Typically
Does the water shut off right away?
Yes, but you will still have some water in your pipes that you can drain from your faucets.
Nah, have to wait like two years for it to stop...
Mine shirt immediately. Well the cold side did. Hot side still pouring water only at a slower rate.
the cover of that water meter outside my house made out of concrete, only a couple of finger size round holes , is there a tool to pull it open? As you said I dont want to accidentally get bitten by snake or insect or rodent who might be hiding underneath it.
Yes a meter hook is a short piece of rod with a handle on one end and a small curved hook on the other that fits through the small hole to lift the lid. It is used by the people that read meters manually.
This was so helpful!
Great Video.
Excellent, thank you.
thanks! i still don't know my main valve, but i know my city meter now, thanks so much.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks good info
Wouldn't turning off your main home water supply turn off the emergency fire sprinklers inside your home, too?
Who has water sprinklers in their home?!? Jeezus my home would be soaked every other week when my kids cook pancakes😂😂😂
You’re only shutting the water for a repair. Turn it back on when your done
Just be very delicate! If you break this valve, you are SCREWED and you will most likely have to pay the city/county for the repair!!!
Great info!
Just show me how to turn off the damn water then talk about the rest.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank u
This has nothing to do with residential water service cut off from street to residence in cities in the state of Maine. We have a five sided nut on a flange at ground level, to access the shut off 2-6 feet below grade. We have FROST.
I have to change an external faucet so I guess this is what I gotta do
Music a bit loud..thought he'd dance at the end! Otherwise Great!
Turn to Jesus people he died for your sins. Repent of what the New testament describes as sin. Believe the gospel get baptized and obey the teachings of Jesus. The gospel and the teachings of Jesus are documented in Matthew Mark Luke and John. Jesus is the only way to be saved God bless you all. If you have faith in Jesus through your faith you will live life with him as your example..,.
How can I lock my Full Port Ball Valve to STOP people from turning off water to my house? Someone thinks it's funny to turn off water to my house, which is very easy since a plumber installed it on my outdoor faucet! So frustrating!
Maybe there’s some sort of box with lock you can install around it.
Put a camera there and find out who’s doing it. Probably neighbors kids or landscapers
You forgot not paying your bill
Wow almost did it until you said scorpions and snakes
That shut off valve would freeze in water being that shallow, 4 feet puts it below the frost line.
Typically
LAUGHING MY ASS OFF WATCHING THIS VIDEO. I live in New England.
It freezes in most areas of North america... lol
good video doesn’t help my situation
What if the thing you turn has a different shape to it like a cirlce shape lik
Excellent video! Thank you!!!
