Someone else mentioned the YT channel “A Salon Life” - if you’re interested in seeing how to do a gentle manicure, she uploads at least one a week with lots of additional informative videos. I’ve learned so much from her (Anna) bc she shares evidence based information combined with her expertise. It’s also so helpful to SEE how she does a gentle manicure so that you can learn to emulate. She has clients that come back week to week so you can see their progress and she and you can also send her photos and she will reply with advice on how to fix all kinds of issues. Super helpful! Kerasal is magic but I also wanted to mention the new OPI Repair Mode - it repairs the bonds in your nails and my nails were transformed but this product. Somehow it made them stronger, smoother, and more flexible at the same time. If you have really weak nails (breaking and splitting), the Mavala Scientifique K+ is a gem (only apply to the tips of your nails every week for a month and then go to every other week or you’ll create super brittle nails, that’s how well it works!). So much great advice in this video, thank you! ✨
One additional note: A Salon Life also shows the Dazzle Dry colors so you can see comparisons to the line but also with other brands which is really helpful!
@@isabelab6851 I hope it works for you! I used it as directed for the first 6 days and then once a day for a few weeks and now I use it between manicures. My biggest problem was peeling and that’s GONE!
I stopped wearing nail polish in April 2023 and filed my nails all the way down. I started using oil at least 7 to 10 times a day. As of today, my nails are in the best shape ever. Organic Jojoba, Almond, Sunflower , and FlexiNail oils have worked for me. Soaking nails in warm oil every one to two weeks in addition to only pushing back cuticles with a wood stick has helped as well . It takes patience. I started seeing damaged nails moving towards the free edge with 4 months. I would then gently file them down. You are worth the wait. Be patient.
I’m a classical guitarist who’s struggled with very thin peeling nails; I tried the usual supplements and topicals for years, but what finally worked was adding 2-4Tbs of collagen to my daily protein shake made all the different in strengthening my nails and stop the peeling.Took about 3 mos.
I played classical guitar for years. It is murder on your nails, isn’t it? I played classical flamenco and it was especially murder on my right hand nails. I always used a nail strengthened, but I removed it after about four days and started with a new sequence of applying a daily coat of nail strengthened. I also used a hand lotion that didn’t feel oily but worked with my hands.
Great video…I watch The Salon Life. She is a nail technician and has a RUclips channel. She is very knowledgeable and she recommended many of the things you mention. To grow nails…keep them super short. Take care of cuticles weekly…but ver gently. Nail soak with jojoba oil since it penetrates better. Once a week do a manicure, soak and leave unpolished overnight. She recommends Dazzle Dry…I am trying that. She mentioned the same substance and now I look to see if the polish has it. She also recommends kerasal. I am trying to grow out my nails after a lifetime of nail biting and picking on the skin. (And I am 60j. All recommendations have helped immensely! She has additional product recommendations that are great. Highly recommend her channel for anyone struggling with nails
As a licensed nail tech in CA I want to thank you for reiterating what I tell my clients daily. It's not necessarily the products that are damaging but how they are applied & removed & what you do at home. Again thank you very much!
I think that’s my issue too! My nails have suddenly stopped growing! But keeping my cuticles moisturized helps, I use petroleum gel or my homemade body butter.
same here. My cuticles are always dry and irritated and they are so short they hurt. Never had nails like this until I started getting gel in menopause
personally i think my polish protects my nails from damage like snags and hitting my nails on things, and so for me the benefits of the polish protection far outweighs any damage the nail polish itself is doing. so i have found that keeping my nails polished has led to longer stronger nails for me!
I can't wear tradition gel or acrylics (allergic) so Dazzle Dry has been FANTASTIC for me... I get 2 weeks of no chipping... No other polish out there can give results.....🧡☺️ I'm licensed and use on nail clients also......
After working in a covid vaccine clinic, washing or gelling my hands 80 times in a half day, my nails were shot. Nothing helped, not supplements or even the weekly oil treatments. Finally I started using “Healthy Hoof” at least twice a day, but really as many times as I could remember, I would use it. After a few weeks the peeling at the edges was improved and as I kept at it, the improvement increased. I use it now at least at bedtime, and my nails have never been so strong.
The Kerasal suggestion: wow! I have struggled with cracked and dry cuticles for years doing paperwork at my job. I've tried everything, including oils. All have been temporary bandages until the next hand wash. This was a game changer.
Thank you so much, I can't tell you how refreshing your post was. Not only because you're drop dead gorgeous and it's quite obvious you take amazing care of yourself but because you are so smart and you really know your craft. Being a middle aged woman I like to think I already know what I need to know about maintaining any part of my body, but you have shown me it doesn't hurt to get back to the basics once and a while...because you taught me quite a bit in the last few minutes! Thank you for clearing up some of the wives tales I truly thought were factual. You have a special way of delivering information that isn't off-putting or offensive. What a beautiful, breath of fresh are you are, Dr. Ellis! ❤
I have the Tweezerman nail products and they truly are great nail care equipment. I started glass filing my nails 20 years ago and will never go back to emery boards or metal nail files. Glass files are also, as Dr. Ellis pointed out, easy to keep clean. This was a great video. I'm going to start incorporating oil treatments into my nail care.
I just found this and love it! Simple and doable. I've always struggles with brittle soft nails, can't grow them at all. Never even thought about the fact that I have to actively take care of them, you live and you learn 😊
What about wearing standard nail polish to protect your nails? I remember growing up and being told that we need to let our nails 'breathe', but it wasn't until I was an adult that I learned that nails don't breathe, and the plate isn't living anyway. Any necessary nutrients and oxygen get provided by our blood. So since they don't need to breathe, could wearing regular polish often (not gel), help protect our nails by acting as a barrier to minimize trauma/damage? 🤔
My Mom & I always had thin, flat nails that also had a tendency to curl under as they grew. We did ask nurses what could be causing it & they never had any answers. I do take vitamins - Vit C, Bilberry, Ocuvite ( for eyes) & PEA ( fatty acid also for eyes). They can grow straight but I find water can be the enemy so other than washing my hands, I tend to use rubber gloves for everything around the house. Dermatologist, Dr Dray says there have been no hard studies that show Biotin does anything. Any advice welcome. ❤️
Thank you for commenting on Biotin. Sooo many ‘people’ (doctors and others) recommend biotin for hair, skin and nails. My best friend is a physician and she said that this gets repeated so often by doctors that it has become a fact. In truth, biotin has NEVER been scientifically proven (to date) that it can grow hair and nails. Biotin has been ‘touted’ to grow hair and nails meaning it was used as a marketing tool and somehow became popular to repeat in the medical field. Now, I’m always skeptical of a doctor that prescribes biotin especially before getting any results of blood work.
I was trying to absorb all the info, but was too dazzled by your cosmetics. You picked the absolutely most flattering shades for yourself! This winter girl is a little jealous of your summer glow. ♥

Wow thank you so much for the little bit about how Biotin can effect lab results. I have been taking Biotin suppliments, and Iam scheduled for blood work checking for heart disease and thyroid issues. That little tip may have saved my life! thank you
I've always had good strong nails (thanks, Mom!) that would grow magnificently all spring and summer and then dry out and break in the dryer part of the year. I knew how to deal with that. Now that I swim in a pool daily they're softer and split in a different way. I'm taking oral collagen, using oil after swimming and hand cream. It took over six months but I'm seeing improvement. Thanks for the video!
A PERFECT example of "what's going on in your body reflects in your nails" is me when I had a double lung transplant. It was an emergency transplant and I nearly died prior to getting it. Well, during my recovery, the nail that grew out was thin, brittle and peeling. As I recovered, the new nail that grew out was strong and healthy and there was a long period where my nail was half healthy nail, half peeling brittle mess. It was wild!
Its very easy to watch your videos to the end, ma’m. Not only because the information is articulated in a very easy to understand way, but also, you are SO beautiful. I got up and applied some blush after watching, because you makeup inspired me, lol❤
i love making my own nail oil with jojoba, castor, olive and vitamin e oil together the main oil being jojoba and i add in some lemon and tea tree and lavender oil to smell nice and relaxing and use it all the time. i also love the rescue x from cnd and even apply it over my nail polish and under my free edge and it really helps keeps my nails strong and love doing warm oil soaks too and love opi glass nail file and i only use regular polish as i have tried gel and dip diy but always have had allergic reactions and now know just to stick to normal polish. I also very careful with pushing back cuticles and use a remover to help soften them beforehand. i use hand cream all the time and love cuticle butters like burt's bees. i also tend to wear latex free gloves to bed with some oil and hand cream on so it can really sink in overnight both when i have polish on and with bare nails too. i like my nails to be longer than my finger tip but not so much that i can't do anything. i use to bite my nails and pick my skin so i found keeping them shaped well and soft and hydrated and polished helps me not to pick at them. the revlon cuticle oil is also a dupe for the cnd solar oil too and i love them both too.
I find using a nail buffer to seal the tips of my nails helps make them super smooth. I had heard this makes it less likely for them to expand and contract with getting wet (not sure if that is true) but since I have been doing this my nails rarely split, peel, or break. When I do mistreat them and have problems I have good results with Nailtiques formula 2.
Thank you for this video. I will try the Kerasal, which I already have. I have been using the iconic cuticle cream, Dior Crème Abricot , since the 70’s. There’s nothing that works as well on the market. It’s very thick and is used at night before bed. It makes your nails and cuticles look so healthy and like you have had a manicure. It’s not easy to find, and is pricey, but you only need a tiny bit and it is worth it, as it lasts a long time and has superb efficacy.
Thank you for this remarkable information, I think it will be helpful for my problem. Once I got the results I will drop another comment. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. 😊
Thanks for the heads up about Biotin affecting labs. I have to get my thyroid checked in about 3 weeks and I've actually been taking my B-Complex lately so its good to know to stop it for 72 hours prior to the lab.
Informative video. I do have healthy strong nails but have developed vertical ridges. I am wondering what causes that and if there is anything I can do. I haven’t gotten manicures in a few years.
Hi Dr. Sam, my wife has started using a product called Sistaco for her nail color. She has tried some many other nail color products and never really had them perform long-term. She has always had thinner nails. She is loving this new product and method.
My thumb nails were constantly splitting it the middle, probably from frequent hand washing. My dermatologist recommended the DermaNail product and I think it's really helping. It's not a quick fix, but works to strengthen your new nail that grows out.
My nails got so brittle after menopause. I had splitting and even some lifting which is devastating after having gorgeous nails my whole life. I starting putting Aquaphor on bare nails once or twice per day (Especially at night so it stays on for hours) and it solved the problem. If I'm slacking then I have a problem again so I make it part of my nighttime routine now.
Thoughts about being in healthcare and needing to wash our hands frequently? Also, there is concern about sterility and wearing nail polish for surgeries. Do you adhere to a no nail polish philosophy as a clinician performing surgery? I use the Bare Hands polisher to give my nails a pretty glossy sheen without polish -but good to know I might be damaging my nail plate if I do this too frequently!
Thank you so much for this video! Very informative! Would you be able to provide tip and tricks to tread psoriasis of the nail bed? I've been suffering with this for years and after many tests, I've been told there is nothing I can do about it to improve that condition. Thank you in advance!
My nails are never been touched by nail technicians for the reason that i am afraid of having infection or ingrown. they are not the prettiest but they are clean and healthy. now i am applying sunflower oil, lotion and petroleum jelly and even sunscreen on them. 😅
Great video! Wanted to share a line of products called Kure Bazaar I recently discovered and have so far been pleasantly surprised with. Kure Bazaar Nail Polish Remover - Hydrating - a la Rose (was able to easily remove CND Vinylux) Kure Bazaar Nail Lacquer - Super Base Silicium I have one of the colors in the line and plan to collect a few more as this polish combined with the Super Base performed very well, keeping nails feeling strong and remained chip-free for a solid 7-8 days.
Thank you for this informative video. I learned so much. I'm a massage therapist and my hands and nails are causing me such anxiety. I keep a stone in my car so I don't pick at the dry skin around the nails. Now I get these heat bumps that itch like nothing ever before. 😢
Flexinail has really helped my peeling and splitting nails. It is the only thing I have found that really does help and has come close to solving the situation completely.
Hi, thank you Dr Sam, paraffin bath treatments are not mentioned in your youtube discussion, not sure if they were so 1990s, I have found that AVEDA products are great for the hands, the professional massage oil from AVEDA is kind to the hands and skin, as I can compare it to other oils on the market including food grade oils from the grocery store. Favourite hand cream would be the AVEDA hand relief, the ella bache hand and cuticle cream at least for the cuticles. Kora organics noni oil for the cuticles and the AVEDA hydrating lotion as a light lotion when I don't want the feeling of a heavy film after washing my hands if I am going to lash out. The AVEDA hand relief does wash off, however it does leave a barrier of softness and oil.
Luckily I don't struggle with my nails itself and they grow strong and fast naturally. Howeveeer, as they grow, the skin bellow the nail tip grows as well, get stuck to the nail and it gets quite uncomfortable 😣 I don't remember the name of this condition... anyway, I end up having to cut the nails short, to remove that uncomfortable layer of skin under the nail 😢 Do you have any recommendations to avoid this?
My cuticle of my big toes is very sensitive. Can’t push them,if I do it will bleed. I use Argon oil by Lanza for my hair and put some around my cuticles as well. My nail have slight ridges and are brittle. I inherited the ridges from my father. Fortunately they are not very visible. The clear polish I use is by OPI.
I also have butter nails! Dazzle Dry is my go to system. I also add a nail strengthener before the top coat, and my manicure lasts for a week. I would love to get salon manicures, but have gotten a fungal infection around my nails twice after salon manicures.
Great video dr Sam😊❤ I have a question, for a period of time (maybe 6-8 months?) one of my nails got a vertical split straight down to where the flesh begins and it didn’t go away. The nail grew and it kept that split at the exact same place, month after month. I guessed I must have hurt my nailbed somehow but does that mean it is damaged forever…?🤔💅🏽
I have had a similar split in one nail for at least 15 years and have tried so many different products, treatments and doctor consultations without any correction of the problem I've lost count. I'm always babying that nail, keep it VERY short, and fear that it will never heal.
I swear by Hard as Hoof cream a few times a day! It totally transformed my nails. I used it after i ruined them doing too many gel manicures and they were bleeding from breaking. I couldn’t believe how much nicer they were when they grew out. Like way nicer than I’ve ever seen them in my whole life! No peeling, no breaking and long. I just keep one by my bedside and one in my work bag. I apply about 2-4x per day when i think of it.
I use Tips brand oil on my nails and they seem to be improving. The toe nail conditioning oil seems to help make my nails stronger. Thank you for this video. It is very helpful.
OPI Nail Envy made a huge improvement in my nails except for 2 of them. Don't know what's going on there, but the rest of my nails are stronger than they've ever been.
Dr Ellis, When is the best time to apply the cutemol cream to your hands and nails? I also purchased Gloves in a Bottle. I have hand excema or psoriasis , not sure which. Thanks so much, Sheryl ❤
How long of a break do you recommend giving your nails from dip manicures? And how often!! I have always been a nail and cuticle picker, first with my teeth, then I got a hold of real cuticle clippers and it was game over…. until I started getting dip manicures and I completely stopped picking at & around my nails! However, when I stop getting dip, my bad picking habits come right back😭
I NEED to know the brand and names of your makeup products. Your makeup is flawless! please do a video about your makeup look. It's so natural and light.

I love the CND SolarOil. It’s definitely been helpful for my nails.
Thank you for this, patience and stay the course when it comes to hair and nails. BTW, motherhood looks great on you, you are even more beautiful now.
I highly recommend the channel called "the nail salon" I've learnt so much about nail care, home manicures and all the science behind nails.
Thanks will try
Thought I was the only person using Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair on my nails It really does work!
Did it help in growing them faster n stronger ?
Thank you for this video. I will try the Kerasal, which I already have. I have been using the iconic cuticle cream, Dior Crème Abricot , since the 70’s. There’s nothing that works as well on the market. It’s very thick and is used at night before bed. It makes your nails and cuticles look so healthy and like you have had a manicure. It’s not easy to find, and is pricey, but you only need a tiny bit and it is worth it, as it lasts a long time and has superb efficacy.
I started taking a Keratin supplement about 8 weeks ago and wow, my nails are stronger and longer now.
What specific brand worked for you?? 🤔
Thank you for this remarkable information, I think it will be helpful for my problem. Once I got the results I will drop another comment. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. 😊
Thank you. I've been struggling with a cracked nail and ridges, so this video is helpful.
A mascara spoolie makes the best nail brush.
No way! I never thought of this! Great idea✨
Do you mean for cleaning under the nails? Great idea.
@@celerywhelan2988 yup, just dip it in sudsy water and go to town.
Hoofmaker is amazing. I used it on my horses hooves and noticed how great my nails were also
My "go to" hand and nail care product is Eucerin UreaRepair plus, 5% Urea Hand cream.
Very important important information from a trustworthy medical professional. Thank you very much!!
I FINALLY have the answer to what’s going wrong with my thumb nails! Lots of good information to move forward with healing, thank you!
My thumb nails were constantly splitting it the middle, probably from frequent hand washing. My dermatologist recommended the DermaNail product and I think it's really helping. It's not a quick fix, but works to strengthen your new nail that grows out.
I'm following the channel 'The Salon Life', so much good information, highly recommend it, has helped my nails a lot
Warm Jojoba nail soak has helped my dry ridged nails. I also rub in several drops every night into my nails.
I have had a vertical split in a nail for over 3 years. The derm gave me no specific advice for this. Do you have any recommendations?
Great information- so glad your video popped up in my feed 😊
My nails are never been touched by nail technicians for the reason that i am afraid of having infection or ingrown. they are not the prettiest but they are clean and healthy. now i am applying sunflower oil, lotion and petroleum jelly and even sunscreen on them. 😅
Great video! Wanted to share a line of products called Kure Bazaar I recently discovered and have so far been pleasantly surprised with.
Kure Bazaar Nail Polish Remover - Hydrating - a la Rose (was able to easily remove CND Vinylux)
Kure Bazaar Nail Lacquer - Super Base Silicium
I have one of the colors in the line and plan to collect a few more as this polish combined with the Super Base performed very well, keeping nails feeling strong and remained chip-free for a solid 7-8 days.
Gorgeous!! You reminded me about the NYX brow pencil today. Trying to work up the nerve to try a warmer brow 😬
This is another AMAZING video, thank you so much ❤❤❤
Love this video! SO helpful to so many.
Hi Dr sam ellis ,love your videos so much 😊 ❤ xx
Thank you for this informative video. I learned so much. I'm a massage therapist and my hands and nails are causing me such anxiety. I keep a stone in my car so I don't pick at the dry skin around the nails. Now I get these heat bumps that itch like nothing ever before. 😢
The last few video I have been obsessed with what is on your lips; pleeeease tell us, Dr.Sam❤
Flexinail has really helped my peeling and splitting nails. It is the only thing I have found that really does help and has come close to solving the situation completely.
Wow, you are looking extra beautiful in this video 🤩
Please do a makeup video of your look to day it looks beautiful
Very informative and practical!
This video is always for everyone
I use Orly Cuticle Care Creme. It works great!
The gleaming skin, hair nails capsules and the radiant skin lotion is made to clear the skin and it enhances the collagen and keratin production
Thank u for your show 😊 can u please show me about the oil from the warm water and what kind of oil too use u are very pretty
Dr. Ellis, please share your makeup. You look gorgeous!!! At a minimum would love your blush and lip combo please!!!
She’s already commented it was professionally done for her.
Hi Im So frustrated with my weak nails, I will start following your tips one question here, does nail breath? Thanking you in advance ❤❤
I have the same problem but mine has been like that for about a year now so I am thinking it is forever 😢
I have had a similar split in one nail for at least 15 years and have tried so many different products, treatments and doctor consultations without any correction of the problem I've lost count. I'm always babying that nail, keep it VERY short, and fear that it will never heal.
Thanks for this video. Question…does using oils you recommend around the nail lift a manicure if using after every (or almost every 🙃) hand wash?
What a great video. You are the best. Thank you❤😊
I swear by Hard as Hoof cream a few times a day!
I just got that stuff cool I am on the right track
That cream has improved my nails. I totally recommend it.
I have been using that for a week now.
I use Tips brand oil on my nails and they seem to be improving. The toe nail conditioning oil seems to help make my nails stronger. Thank you for this video. It is very helpful.
I use the makeover by dermelect to help my nails. With regular oil application, does it matter if I have that polish on it?
OPI Nail Envy made a huge improvement in my nails except for 2 of them. Don't know what's going on there, but the rest of my nails are stronger than they've ever been.
Argan oil works perfect❤
You are so smart I love you this was so helpful
Dr Ellis,
When is the best time to apply the cutemol cream to your hands and nails? I also purchased Gloves in a Bottle. I have hand excema or psoriasis , not sure which.
Thanks so much, Sheryl ❤
What lip combo are you wearing?
the only time in my life that I've had strong long nails was the summer I lived in Barcelona and was eating a ton of seafood, for what it's worth.
What about a product for conditioning and strengthening my nails , do you think it will adversely affect my nails?
DIET IS IMPORTANT AS WELL SMOOTHIES AND GREEN JUICES WITH GREENS AND MY NAILS ARE GOOD AND STRONG NO BREAKAGES.
So helpful thank you!
Hi, what is your lip combo in this video. the color is so nice.
How long of a break do you recommend giving your nails from dip manicures? And how often!! I have always been a nail and cuticle picker, first with my teeth, then I got a hold of real cuticle clippers and it was game over…. until I started getting dip manicures and I completely stopped picking at & around my nails! However, when I stop getting dip, my bad picking habits come right back😭
My nails have ridges on both thumbs and my ring finger. Any suggestions for nail ridges? ❤
I NEED to know the brand and names of your makeup products. Your makeup is flawless! please do a video about your makeup look. It's so natural and light.
How should you cut them? Straight? Curved in the corners? To avoid grown-in nails
