I once was on vacation in Georgia (the country near Russia, not the state) and there was a hotel that advertised air conditioning. It had 4 rooms and ONE tiny fan in one of the rooms. It was in the summer when the heat can get really ridiculous. Im pretty sure that was the worst night’s sleep I have had in my life.

Canadian citizen here, I once got stuck on the other side of the country because of Air Canada. After boarding the plane and waiting for 30 minutes in my seat, they unboarded us and told us to wait in the terminal. After a further 2 hours waiting in the terminal, they canceled my flight, told us to gather at arrivals to gather our luggage, and told us that someone would be waiting to give us a voucher for a hotel for the night. Try to call the airline itself, on hold. I waited 4 hours, with the rest of the entire flight, for someone to show up. People are getting antsy, airport staff are getting antsy and are trying to contact the airline to figure out what the fuck is going on, all the while I'm still on hold. I ended up calling a relative who lives an hour away from the airport to pick me up. After almost 8 hours of waiting, my ride out of this hell arrives, I'm still on hold, and there's no news of anything happening. As far as I'm aware, Air Canada just fucking dipped and left that entire flight stranded for a day.

Guys, I’m sorry to say this, but the border services agents were doing their job. Unfortunately, he reported it missing/lost/stolen, and the passport was taken out of circulation…the BIGGER question is, how did he get on a plane in the US to come to Canada? No offence, But you’re all backwards on this one.
The Border services agents were doing their job, and obviously noticed something was amiss. He never should have been allowed into canada in the first place without it…
Can you imagine… someone comes to canada, says they’re from the states but have a passport that’s been taken out of circulation…and then that person, because someone felt…whatever at the airport, and let the person onto the flight. Then, that person goes to the states and commits an act of terrorism…I’m not saying he would, obviously, but as a hypothetical…
I’m sorry guys, this one was his fault, but more correctly, American border services in allowing him to leave the country in the first place without a passport..
I couldn’t agree more that our bureaucracy in this country, ESPECIALLY at the top position, is TERRIBLE, but in this case? Nope, they did their job and did it right.

Travel tip to make sure your shit arrives and is treated as gently as possible on US flights.
I used to travel for a living and used this trick to make sure my bags were never lost and treated far better than regular bags. I would pack a starter pistol in my checked bag. Because Firearms traveling in checked containers are treated like relics of a by gone age. When you are at the counter you declare there is a firearm in the bag. At that point the bag is personally handed off from person to person and comes with a sing off sheet. because federal regulations are VERY STRICT about how they are handled.
The airline will know exactly where your bag is at and will treat ot significantly better than other bags

Relatively small island vs a large country with multiple different geographical obstacles and having to deal with a separate sovereign nation that has never been conquered by the USA (or visa versa). The total distance he traveled just to get to Seattle from Vancouver is about 500km. That's still 1500km away from his home assuming he's in LA California.
Meanwhile, the UK is about 1000km from head to toe, has been "unified" through war and diplomacy more than once, has had an actual war (or two or three) with outside forces and hostile neighbors, and the entire country is incredibly regimented as far as land and geographical obstacles goes. Of course you lot have a bustling train system; your island can't afford to house as many cars, or roads, since you are on a huge island and land is at a premium.
A lot of the area he was in in the north near Canada is wild country where it isn't a small town or farm. It isn't like a train wouldn't be possible; there is a train from Vancouver to Portland, apparently. It would require a passport and it would be slow. A train from Seattle to LA would take about a day to 2 days to complete its trip, because we don't have a high-speed rail that goes that far in the USA (for various reasons from budget, to politics, to this part of the world being very volcanically and seismically active, to the simple fact that there are a lot of mountains in between the two cities).
Finally, there is the fact that automobiles are more suited to that kind of area and with those kinds of distances for the people who live out there. Most places that people live out there are not in a big city, which means that hubs like train depots are simply not a good alternative to having a 4wheel drive and enough fuel to get to a city when you need to. They can't build train depots in every little town (like the one with a population of 5000 that Bricky went to in his story) nor can they run that much track to every corner of the USA or Canada, so people are stuck having to use cars to get to urban hubs to take flights to places in the USA (and Canada) until someone invents something that will work for people in the sticks *AND* for people who live in nice regimented villages and cities both.

As a Canadian that's watched u for years I feel really sorry for you. Definitely a rollercoaster that they just didn't need to put you on. Why did they need to confiscate your passport?! Like? And they fact they LET YOU IN with that same passport they confiscated and then put you through this whole fiasco. Like HUHHHH?! Sometimes dealing with the governmental offices, services and stuff like that here is a real pain and I find they just don't see your POV a lot of the time for things like this. There should have been an easier solution for sure, this is a huge misunderstanding. There's so many things like did Air Canada even refund your flight too?! Hell they should've payed for your ubers... love you bricky.

Canada has a LOT of run-around going on in its travel, medical and other government-operated industries.
Lotta folks put on hold for days, calls dropped, appointments deleted/lost, etc.
I swear its some spaghetti-code level organization. Strongly believe it's done this way to limit the number of folks using said services without actually denying them outright; to eave money... Or to extract more as they drag things out.

Air Canada is absolutely the worst airline in the history of the world. As a Canadian, I feel your pain on dealing with those clowns.
For the record, though, this situation had absolutely nothing to do with CBSA - all they did was (probably) just verify his identity and send him along. Also, when a passport is reported lost or stolen, it becomes invalid and CBP is obligated to seize it on behalf of the US passport office.
The only thing is, the US preclearance guys at the airport are the same guys who are at the land border - they probably should have told him to uber to the border.
It's a sucky situation though, for sure.
