  • The customer complained of a noise on deceleration and a quick test drive confirmed the noise was coming from the rear end area. What started out as a simple wheel bearing replacement quickly escalated into a full blown differential overhaul. Watch this special one hour presentation as we dig deep to find the cause.

      @@grindhard4312 yes . I now have 849.000 miles on this car same factory engine . I use it for limo service so I drive every day. Been in limo business 41 years . I have got the best service from the 4.6 engines in Lincoln Towncar. It’s 2003 model ultimate L .

      @@bigplayray777jackpot4 Wow!!! I bought an 03 Executive LTC from a limo service back in Jan and was SO skeptical of going through with it because it had 336K miles on it. But I needed a car and he assured me it well maintained and that she was a workhorse and reliable. 3K miles and camshaft position sensor later and she's running like a champ! I've been told these 4.6 engines can get 5-600K miles easily when taken care of, we shall see!!

    I have only rebuilt 2 differentials in my career and this video was a great refresher. I don't understand why so many techs are afraid of differentials. They are great straight forward repair work - and you make it look very easy. Thanks for the video and the laughs.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  7 лет назад +3

      Thanks, I have to admit im also one of those techs that gets a little uneasy when a diff problem rolls in. Mostly because there are so many subtle differences and special tools and procedures that come with these jobs. IM getting more comfortable all the time but am cautious none the less since its become such a specialty area due to tools, equipment and experience requirements. Just my two cents however I am confident this repair will get him another 100K down the road without issues.

    Mine developed noisy bearings around 180k. The transmission shop quoted $1000 to go through it and change everything. Instead, I found a good, low mileage rear axle from the salvage yard and installed it in an afternoon. $350. These 8.8's seem to be everywhere right now, and changing out the whole assembly saves a lot of work.

Another thing is when you were putting that white grease to test the gap how do i really know if it's good enough. can you please help me out

    For future 8.8 jobs where you find yourself needing to remove both axle shafts, buy a length of metal pipe that spans the width of the axle housing and use it to knock the axle shaft bearings and seals together. It's a lot simpler AND QUICKER this way so you're not fiddling around with setting up a slide hammer. Anytime I have both axles out I knock my bearings and seals out together this way

    an easier way to remove the axle bearings and seals when you have the carrier out is to use a long pipe about 1 inch diameter and put it through the end of the housing from one side until it contacts the bearing on the opposite side, wack it with a pony sledge and both pop right out, repeat for the other side..no fighting with the seals and no puller needed.

    Excellent, I enjoyed that. Two questions. Surely the axel was not that loose when you took out the ABS sensor? How did you tighten the pinion and crush the crush washer?

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  7 лет назад +2

      After removing the center pin in the differential carrier and removing the brake calipers, rotors and speed sensor the axle shaft will push in about 3/4" and allow for removing the inside c-clip that retains the shaft. the inner carrier pin does not allow the axle shaft to move in once it is installed. I used an impact on the pinion just a little at a time until I have proper preload. This may not be the recommended procedure but if your careful it works fine. If you go too tight then youll need to replace the crush sleeve and start over. Probably a few things that I didn't follow recommended procedure but I think it went out the door as a solid repair. Thanks for watching!

    I think it is called a oil slinger not a shim that goes between the rear pinion bearing and seal

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  7 лет назад +2

      Oh good call. I think you are correct. Thanks for the feedback. I was thinking it really wasn't shimming anything.

    What were you using for your gear pattern? Did you ever use white lead? Now I'm showing my age.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  7 лет назад +1

      I used to use Prussian Blue but don't remember the white product. I have to admit IM not the most experienced at differential repairs and just try to get them out the door without major problems. I just got to the point of no return on this one and decided I better plow forward and knock it out. I probably wouldn't choose to do them in the first place but it worked out ok. Take care.

    hey awesome video! i didn't see you crush your crush sleeve though? you just set the pinion preload?

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  6 лет назад

      Its been a while but the crush sleeve is for setting and keeping pinion pre-load. Therefore it is "crushed" when setting preload. Thanks for asking and watching my vid!

    How did you drop that spider gear pin, mine hits the pinion gear

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  Год назад

      Before removing the pin it is rotated to a position where it can be removed from the bottom of the case.

      Just make sure the depth and lash are set properly I suppose.
