The reason I like this 50mm lens is it's stops your images looking digital.
Wow. Pentacon lenses have such a good reputation? Now I'm glad as a kid I was a steadfast secondhand praktica user. I have loads of M42 and praktica bayonet lenses bought using my own pocket money when nobody wanted them!
Praktica was so underrated back then when I was buying them (90's) and were basically seen as junk. This was very useful for me being on pocket money as they were the cheapest stuff you could get. Most of what I got was freely handed to me anyway.
This all reminds me I need to spend a day going through the collection testing them and making sure they are still ok and dont need attention.
Same experience. I was in high school just as digital really took over, and in my last year the school switched from analog to digital cameras in the education. I remember us buying everything from medium format mayimas & rolleiflexes, to glass like canon fd, chinon and pentax for pocket change. I have saved most of it but can't find some of the FD lenses now, 20- something years later. I get a shock sometimes when looking up stuff I have on ebay.
Hi. The earlier versions, I understand don't have the coatings of the final version. Will this affect image quality much? Will flare be a bigger issue with the older versions? Would value your advice. Thanks.
I've been using this on my a6000 for most of the year after being given to me from Mother in law, it was her father's and it was kept in a shoebox. I freaking love this lens. First legacy lens I've ever shot with.
Love your casual candid style. And thanks for pushing me over the edge on a purchase of this lens!
I'm torn between this one and the yashinon 50 1.9... What would you choose? I'll be using this reversed as a macro at first.... but would use that normally if I could focus on infinity etc on the D800e...
what you think about the pentacon 180 2.8?
Just got a Pentacon AV 100mm F2.8. What kind of adapter do I need for a Fuji? Super confused
M42 mount ??? there are diff versions........ M42 to Fuji X mount adapter from Rainbow imaging on ebay :)
Theoria Apophasis thanks I'll. Check it out. Just ordered it today from Austria
It says it's a Pentacon helicoid mount. What should I get?
Took your advice and bought the Tamron 15-30mm & Tamron 70-200mm. Awesome and no words to say how exquisite the pictures are. Thanks for the recommend!
Thank you for mentioning the difference between M42 and P-thread, which may need another adapter. Most of these lenses in Europe will be P-thread. Praktica was the entry level camera of choice in Europe, as you probably know. They were cheaper than anything that came out of Japan, so most of these lenses in Europe probably have P-thread. Plus the reason why Praktica cameras were so much cheaper was poor quality control. On my Praktica, which I got as a birthday present during my teens, I push the shutter by moving the crank, strangely. When I got my Nikon, I only used it for photographing rock concerts, since I did not care if it were spilled with beer. Anyway, people should check these lenses carefully. Another tip: there are 2* converters for these lenses.
Honestly I haven't see a bad 50mm yet.
This pentacon was my first lens in 1995 when I started photography by taking a shot of the comet Hale-Bopp (I was 13yo).
An expert photographer told me to close it at f5.6 and I didn't listen, f1.8 was the only reasonable aperture, sadly I had no tripod and the picture looks shaky but you can spot the blue tail!
Kodak Ektar 1000 and 15s exposure is what I remember.
Probably the aberrations makes this lens very creative.
Years later it has been disassembled...for fun. Lol.
I have just managed to buy a perfect clean Pentacon 50mm F 1.8 it came with a mint condition Practika camera too. All for $20 Australian. It’s beautiful. Thankyou for recommending it.
I just found this lens on an old Hanimex Praktica super TL! I shoot with a Fuji xt2 what adapter can I use?
Got it already... and couldn´t resist how cool and well-built the Rikenon 50mm f2 looked :/ so I got both from the same seller... The bokeh in the Pentacon is really something.
Hi Ken, Just thought I thank you again for the Pentacon 50 f1.8 recommendation. Ive used this lens so much now even under lockdown. Its just superb. It has to be one of the best all time lenses because on Fuji X its superlative. There's a good argument to say that no other 50 is needed despite it not being AF. It can focus so close to make it almost a sudo macro for those who like that. Looking at the recent crop of MF lenses from Pergear, you also endorsed, would you say they are better and if so in what way? Should someone needing a very cheap but very good lens be looking at the new crop of lenses or the older ones we are all already familiar with? Also there is the issue of radioactivity, which there is no need to worry about with the "new" glass. As a side issue, apart from the macro lenses in the Fuji line-up are you aware if there are any close focus AF lenses for Fuji under 50mm?
Hi Ken ,I found one of these for 25£ and I bought it at your recommendation.Scuff free,no dust,no oil on the ap blades but when I cleaned the front element with cotton budds and with towel as you said I noticed the front element is not fixed but has a slight play.I could not try it yet because I cant decide yet wich adapter to buy without the focus infinity problem. Is it normal for the front element to have play since the lens is not crc? Kind regards and thank you ever so much for all the hard work that is very helpfull for amateurs photographers like us!
It is NOT normal for any lens to have any moving optical elements. Your lens must have been disassembled for cleaning/repair and then reassembled incorrectly. Sorry about your lost 25 quid.
I was blown away be the sharpness and performance of this little lens it hold up against high end prime lens pls I want to know if the super takumee 85mm is radio active and also ur thought on pentacon 29mm thanks
Just picked one up off Ebay for under £30! Looking forward to seeing how it works with my XT1/XPRO1 s
I got one from a friend as a gift and I love it. The Bokeh is so unique.
I'll definitely grab one of these lenses. Is there a specific M42 to F mount adapter that you would recommend to use with it?
Just ordered the 50 =) Going to be exciting to try out on my beloved x-t2 . Thanks for the recommendation. Best wishes from Sweden.
How did you get on with this lens? :)
I'll buy one of these to use as a ***Close-Up lens on the Nikon*** with the M42 adapter without glass... Good idea???
I got it and love the bokeh. Never thought it could produce those kind of images. Thanks 4 sharing.
Ken, how do you compare this to the Tamika Sears 55mm?
my dad has this lens, and his old praktica MTL 5 B, i play with it on my nikon from time to time, is not sharp at 1.8 but at 2.8 is amazing ! a lot of contrast but it does flare quite a lot
check the bokeh man :P
I always had outstanding results with Prakticar lenses - they don't have that immense color saturation and contrast like Leica glass, but the price is a fraction of Leica. And you can tell that Pentacon was a big state company with serious machinery and engineering, the machining of the bayonet mount is just gorgeous.
They don't cost shit in the Netherlands, I got the older model without multicoating in mint condition for 2 euro in a thrift shop and a newer model with the camera and a couple of other awesome lenses for 30 euro. You can get them for 15 euro with the camera....
I found one on eBay, but it’s says “Pentacon Prakticar f1.8 MC”. How does it compare? Is it just another version of that lens?
Can you tell me about the PB to Nikon F mount adapter please? I got the lens for 10 euros, but the only one Iìve found for praktica mount is 69 GBP, can you help me please?
My first lense, period, was one of this i mean, i bought one in 2020. using my brothers 6D loaned, love it!!
The pentacon 135mm f2.8 lens which version is best?
Bought this lens for my girlfriend together with a vivitar 135 2.8 the other day, did not immediately realise they were that good.
Hey Ken, just bought one. Recommendations for an adapter to attach this lens to a D700?
oh my gawd theres so many adapters, the issue youll have is INFINITY FOCUS with most adapters, but this lens is not worth buying for anything further than about 30+ feet
KF adapters, theres so so many cheap chinese ones on ebay……and most are the same quality
I got this lens and tested it on my D7100. It focuses only upto around 2 feet close distance at infinity focus. No focus farther than this distance. Good bokeh at very close distance. Used an ordinary M42 to nikon adaptor. So it does not focus beyond 2feet?
I hunted in my attic for my old camera and what was attached....this very lens.
Thanks for the heads up Ken.
Also, just wondered if you think the Carl Zeiss Jena 135 f3.5 is comparable to the Pentax you revealed last week?
ohhhhhh baby, you lucky guy…..and yes :)
Just got a kit for €9,50
Pentor super TLPanagor 135mm f:2.8
Pentacon 1.8/50 auto first version
Accura diamatic 28mm f:3.5
Revue 2x converter
Brenner extention tubes
Bauer e16
What do I keep and what do I get rid of oh camera wizard.
Great recomm .. i bougt it for 20€ in the netherlands 👍🏻👍🏻
Just ordered one from Sweden for $25. Curious do you think the Pentacon is superior to the SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4?
I got one of these with an old Praktica camera for 20 Euro's on an auction site. The seller, without me knowing, also threw in another Praktica camera with a broken light meter, an old 60's hand held light meter plus a Helios 44-2. I was pretty happy with the purchase.
Do you know something also about the 135 2.8 or 29 2.8 Pentacon???
They where lenses from the same time.
Enjoyed your videos. I bought this Pentacon and it's really stunning. Thanks for the tip. Curious as to why I can only shoot video if I attach it to my D7000 but not on D810. My D810 should work fine, it can take video using vintage Konica lenses. Is this because of the specific M42 adapter that somehow more sensitive on D810 than D7000?
Hello,I OWN the Pentacon prakticar 50mm 1:1.8 is ther a adapter to put this lens on Nikon F mount? Thx for info
Great to hear your review, especially as in Europe people won't touch these simply because they came as standard on the Praktica SLR (sold in the millions), everybody wants the Pancolar. My father bought me a Praktica L in 1975 with this lens on it, don't know what happened to it, have just bought an MTL with this lens on it for 20$.
Hi, so you seem to have a lot of M42 glass and I know that all of these are quite superior. Could you mayber make a video on the best M42 lenses to save us $$$$$$ ? That would be really cool. I already have some Takumars with my Spotmatic and got into using those on my D7000 and now want to buy some more but don't really know what to pick and as they are dirt cheap I'll buy a lot of those in the near future.
btw you are the only photography youtuber I really trust and you seem to have an incredible knownledge of nearly all gear form the last 50 years lol
well im doing that already now
Should check out the Zeiss Ultron 50 1.8 for M42 mount
I have the auto revuenon 50 f1.8 which looks exactly like the pentacon. Is it a rebranded one?
I just got given two of these tonight can't wait to get the adapter
I like this lens quite a bit... I forgot about it, though. I haven't used it in a couple years. I bought one of these maybe 5 years ago for like $10
Getting mine today!
The 35mm 2.8 Carl Zeiss" Flektagon". The 50mm 1.8 Carl Zeiss" Pancolor" The 135mm 3.5 Carl Zeiss Sonnar, 180mm and 200mm 2.8 Pentacon( for 6x6 very heavy), are all great not to expensive lenses. (some are tagged "Prakticar" as in Practica and Carl Zeiss. . adapters available for pennies. Later models 1980s 90s have the best multi coatings. Problems with sticky blades and fungus if not stored correctly from years ago. A link to some pics I took with the 50mm 1.8 Pancolor set at 2.8 -Sony A55 if interested, (sorry about cheesey music). ruclips.net/video/j2knF8VF1m0/видео.html
BTW: which one do you prefer... the rikenon 55/1.4 that you made a similar video about in the past or this one? also what about the minolta 58/1.4 as a third competitor? i might just get all three of them.
ohh easy the Rikenon......
Theoria Apophasis for what reason, is it more of an art photography lense?
And isnt the minolta better in terms of portraits?
Pls shirt explanation on your thoughts.
I just acquired one of these - very nice results. Then I did same pictures, same camera, Olympus E-PL1, with std Zoom lens - it just completely belw the Pentacon out of the water. I followed up with the smaller sensor bigger megapixel Sony RX10 (1st edition) - I liked the Olympus better, probably due to the bigger sensor. The Carl Zeiss lens was about the same 1:1 as the Olympus was magnified 2x. Magnifying the Olympus maximum zoom to 2x on the computer seems to reproduce the effect of the Pentacon at close range with infinitely better quality. Please try it, you will be surprisesd at the results. And the Pentacon is a fine lens - I took som nice picture, yet I will be putting it back in my museum now ;)
Vintage camera stores here in the UK are full of 'em. Picked up a Praktica SLR with one for £25 a couple of months ago.
I wanted to buy a cheap 50mm prime lens (never had anything but kit lenses before) for my new EOS-M50 and found that almost all the other cheap used lenses on ebay had fungus/haze issues so I bought a Practica in very good condition. Still waiting for the adapters (Praktica to EOS and EOS to EOS-M) to arrive but according to your review I will not regret buying it :)
I have a D810...will this lens work with my camera? If so, is a special adapter needed? Thanks!
Bahaha I watched you live when you brought it up. Ordered it then and it's coming soon. 50 bucks. 😁😁😁😁😁
you jumped the gun on everyone :)
I have 6 of these of various ages and they are all fantastic lenses.
Half of the Dutch photographers started with Praktica. Cheap stuff, but made to work under all circumstances. Repairable with a hammer, of just by dropping it on the floor. B-series with bajonet were more sensitive, but still rough tanks. There is some variation in quality from lens to lens. Some are softer in corners than others, some are never really sharp. But the ones that are good, are really really good. The f2.4 is not the one to have ('pancake'), the f1.8 is fantastic. All made in the shabby factory in Dresden.
Got two from family for free! Plus the practika SLR cameras matching. F1.8 at 50mm it's a beauty! Cheep vibrant and in all honesty it has charm and character. Not analytical pin sharp but beautiful 😍
Picked one up today 7 years after your video I knew I wanted one paid 75 bucks for a minty one it was listed at 125 bucks. Prices are going up.
What adapter should I use to get this onto my Nikon d610??
I have the b mount MC variant of the lens. Also I've read that some adapters with the chip that tells your camera a lens is there can damage the camera. True?
Canon 50mm f1.8 FD lens shares the same double Gaussian lens element design, excellent performance too!
Great advises on these vintage soap bubble bokeh lenses. Are there any other unique effects that certain vintage lenses can give?
I've got 3 pentacon 50mm 1.8 lenses and also A 135 mm 3.5 sonnar all built like tanks and optical wonders
iam getting one next Thursday.
is there a wide angle PENTACON. like a 20mm,23mm etc.
Those are the Flektogon lenses - brutally expensive.
I just bought a Pentacon Meyer-Optik Oreston 50mm f/1.8 Adapted Canon EOS EF. It wasn't cheap. A hair under $100 USD. But after researching it, I had to have it. It's being shipped from Hungary to me.
Dennis H. 100 bucks? Thats a lot! I got one for 10 euro here in the Netherlands
There are so many good 50mm. But hard to find a relative cheap and good 35mm. How is nikon 35mm f2 ais and 35mm f2.8 ais?
good is good, this is Awe---------SOME
could you make video about Pentacon 135mm f2.8 and Pentacon 200mm f4 ?
What's the name of the lens it is based on? The meyer optic?
My $25 Pentacon is on its way. Can't wait to experiment!
youve seen the test pics from it havent you ? :) its NOT an extremely sharp lens wide open, but thats not its extreme beauty and soul
Theoria Apophasis I'm with you: ultra sharp images don't spark anything in me. :)
Thanks for the tip Ken, bought one for £17 on ebay
U guyz in europe got it made on THESE kinda lenses, so many over there, and few here :)
4 instances of the same Flickr link??
I snapped up 1 for £13 mint condition. Absolute bargain I’m now torn between using this or my Jupiter 8 50mm £50 for my travels later this year. I’ve not seen a comparison, but am aware of the close focus problem with the m39 smaller soviets. However I’ve managed to fix this with a close focusing adapter. Having mentioned this due to the smaller aperture on the Jupiter 8 it is a bit trickier in low light situations.
Just done a quick test and for low light they appear adjust the shutter speed to be about the same in room light 800 iso
Since comparing my Helios and pentacon I’ve come to the conclusion that I love my Helios for its centre sharpness, but my pentacon does have beautiful soap bubble bokeh. It’s definitely quite soft wide open so only comes out when I need that soft effect.
This is nice. Sad thing is at least half of these I find need at least some cleaning. I did it many times but I never lost fear of decentering the individual lenses.
I thought I recognised that lens. A friend of mine gave me one about 15 years ago. I've not got a camera body to fit it too, so I've never shot with it. Might as well pick up a cheap Praktica to go with it :-)
I like your reviews, bought several after watching. Wish you would show the lens close up so i can make sure im finding the one your talking about
Could anyone tell me what converter I’d need to use this on an X-T3?
I think I need this lens in my life!!
Not sure if you figured it out already but a cheap m42 to Fuji X mount is all you need. Fotasy and K&F makes great adapters. Fotasy is cheaper.
hi ..thanks it confirms what I thought ..I bought one 1 week ago ..the earlier version of the pentacon ..15 euros en etsy..AMAZING !!
Thanks for this informative video 🙂 Pentaflex Auto 50 1.8 or Pentacon 50 1.8 which is better? Also do they have intermediate f stops? Please share if any of these are radioactive coated. I love the rendition of Mamiya Sekor 55. Your response helps me in purchase decision
pentacon
@@kathodosdotcom Thanks for guidance 💐
Hello Sir,
Your videos are helping me a lot, please keep up the good work. I have Nikon D750. Watching some videos, have been told I will not be able to focus to infinity with it, but will need to stop down.
Also, what is the difference between the electric and the auto model please?
You forgot to mention that on a crop sensor it's a macro. That's how I use it... incredible!
Can I use the aperture priority on this lens on the Canon A1?
i dont know on canon stuff
Thanks for reply
Bought one of the earlier version. Now waiting for the magic happens.
got it and adapter won't focus properly ?????
I wonder if the Carll Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50mm f2 is better?
Just bought one of those for around 30 dollars on an auction here in Sweden :-)
Stop with these secret lenses I'm spending to much money .lol
heheehe, ok
check this page:
www.flickr.com/photos/vertexr/
Thats a little strange :-/
no its just plain batshit weird
@@kathodosdotcom the Pentacon 50 f1.8 is it the same lens as pentacon prakticar 50mm f1.8
Thanks for the recommendation. Is this radioactive?
No
I knew from past photos my grandfather took that this was a gem of a lens but I find it funny how reviews of this lens from "experts" rate it low. Just shows you that the so called 'experts' no not their asses from their elbows.
those so-called experts are morons and idiots, they dont know jack crap about lenses in general or otherwise :)
youre right, they dont :)
Ken what about the Pentacon Praktica 1.8?
not used that one, theres soooo many old lenses out there to mess with :/
I have 3 of these, 1 in near mint condition and 2 that are kinda in terrible shape since the person i bought it from tried to clean the fungus himself but butchered the lens, but after some repairs its usable but has a lot of dents and scratches. the other has aperture stuck wide open since last owner bent half of them putting them back in.
Is this the same as 50mm 1.8 Carl Zeiss Pentacon M42?
I need to control myself, but since I own the voightlander 58 I don't think I need another lens in the 50ish mark. Well, at least I shouldn't :)
I was going to make a similar comment, should have told us about these lenses before the Voigtlander!
I have a 58mm Helios 44-2, and an SMC Super Takumar 50mm 1.4 and I really think I should stop buying 50ish lenses.
I have at least 6x lenses on the 50ish mark. I should definitely stop :D
is the 28 mm f2.8 any good?
the D version yes, my most hated focal is the 28mm :/
got one for £20 cant wait!!!!
ha there are tons of cheap
PENTACON 50MM f1.8 on ebay just look for old camera with lens 20 - 100 euro
Can this Lens work with my love? the nikon f3 hp? (Film)
i got this lens given to me with the praktica mtl3...still havent really tried it out yet
I have the same set, just develop my first roll (Ilford xp2 super 400) and the result is amazing.
Also make sure the seals are in good conditions, on the mtl3 they are often damaged.
OMG. Is it that good?! I think this is the lens that is most frequently found on flee markets in the Netherlands. I always skip them because I already own 4 of them at an average cost of 4 euro's per piece. The first one was beaten up quite heavy but the pictures looked okay, so when the other 3 came along i thought what can go wrong for that price. I own them about 2 years and the price looks to rise, sometimes the sellers ask 25 euro on the flee market. After this video I will test my Pentacon 50mm f/1.8 a bit better.
another great share Ken. how does this compare to the previous silk sex sugar Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm f2.8?
both are wonderful, this one is made better on average for people bitching about the east german Tessar (however BOTH of these are east german)……….if both were the same price (usually theyre NOT, the Tessar is often cheap as hell) id pick the Pentacon cause of its Unicorn and Angels bokeh , heheheheh!!
