So much great information as always! I love how you both are transforming the culture by introducing techniques that work!

This discussion was so insightful, thank you for sharing your expertise with us. I totally had a lightbulb moment when you talked about 2D hair, because that's why I'm often disappointed with my haircuts, they are not actually cut for *my* type of hair to have its best shape.

I had to get my Deva cut fixed too and I will never do it again. I had that exact same problem. You nailed the description of the Deva cut on the head.

This is exactly what happened to me. I have been natural since 2006, and only went to a curly hair salon once. It was a disaster. They come my hair so roughly that it broke off in many places, and they cut the top really short and left a mullet in the back. I haven't found the courage to go to a hair stylist since 🤦🏽‍♀️
Thank you for your work ladies. I love see some curls!

It’s so crazy to me when people come for you for identifying, through education and experience, a niche. After natural hair becoming more popular again for the past 10-15 years, it only makes sense that we (clients) will seek out new and different skills to get the look we want. A good cut, shape and nice products can go such a long way in making our daily lives better. Can go a long way in helping us love, embrace, and flaunt our crown!

Omg, that’s exactly what happened to me. I didn’t ask for a Deva cut, but my salon does Deva cuts. She is really good but recently I went to the salon and saw a Jr stylist who cut my hair shorter on top (the Deva cut look). I almost cried when I saw her make the cut but it was too late to stop it. I loved the look afterwards but I knew when it shrunk (day 3 on) my hair would not look good; and it didn’t. My hair looked like an egg on top and I was devastated because I had been trying to grow the top out. I will say the Sr stylist and owner of the salon has been good with my hair and has done my trims with in intention on length on the top, I guess it’s the experience of the stylist because I’ve been happy with her . My hair grows fast so it’s finally looking better but It’s been 3 months and it’s now time for my trim. I’m definitely going to stay with the seniors.

Yall just made me realize why my hair has been stuck at this length for more than 6 months. I've been getting Devacuts every 3 months and it feels like my hair is getting shorter???! Time to find a new stylist.

A Jar of Jam it’s not necessarily time to find a new stylist. Are you communicating that your goal is to grow your hair out? Are you exploring your options with your current stylist? It’s important that you are an active participant in any stylist client partnership.

Basically, deva cuts aren't for type 4/coily hair. I pretty much saw that from the beginning lol

I’m getting my first cut on my kinky hair next month by someone that took your training courses but I do not know how to articulate what shape I want to the stylist. I don’t want a blunt cut or a disco ball shape and I’m not sure how to research curly hair cuts when majority of the cuts are catered towards looser hair. Help please lol.

But that is the exact proportion of a Rezo cut. It's important we know what result were wanting before we have something done.

Black Girl Curls I explained to the stylist what I expected even asked questions before she started letting her know how I wear my hair and how I handle my hair throughout the week . I believe she was not trained to do coily hair. Her instagram even reflected her only doing a looser curl pattern. Either way I should have took that as a red flag. Anyway I have recovered and will do as Dicky saids : and that is blow it out and trim or cut . What you can’t see you can’t cut , even my new stylist who does curly cuts tells me if I want a even cut blow it out first because curly cuts are never perfect if that is what you want, so since that is what I strive for that is the rule I will abide by for now on. I will leave the curly cuts Deva , Rezo etc to the curly girls that like to live on the edge with their hair😂😂😂

    • @BlackGirlCurls

@@KLT828 blow out cuts are definitely a viable option. No one is living on the edge doing curly cuts who have proper training in working with tighter coils. I occasionally blow out my curly cut clients with 0 shape issues. - Aeleise

I like the Intent of this platform, but what comes across is the need to denigrate or attack a method, approach or technique in order to propel yourselves as subject matter experts. I think I'd respond more favorably if you just said, Listen I've been doing this 10 years and I'm still learning. Not, I've been doing this 10 years and I know it all. You're giving opinions on "techniques" that you admit you don't even have education or experience with, stating they're "bad" for this hair type. How do you even know? You are lending or feeding into the notion or theory that hairstylists cannot be trusted. You, sis, are part of the problem. Not the solution. That's why so many of us naturalistas go it alone. We trim our own hair. We color our own hair. We style our own hair. We grow tire of depending upon "experts" who don't know crap about our hair and have to take as much as time as we do in learning it, because every head of hair is different. Curly cutting was not invented in the 2000s. Folks have had to maintain curly hair for centuries. Nothing is new under the sun. Some of these labels like Deva cut are new, but the concept isn't. This feedback is given in the spirit of love. I hope its received that way. Love and Light!

So you're gonna love and light your way with this essay? Have you evaluated for yourself whether I have the chops to take a solid look at the industry I've worked in for 16 years and the specialty I've continually educated myself in for 10 years to give my professional observations?
Of course I'm still learning, but I don't see an iota of an issue in being frank about knowing what I know. I'm not sure who let you down in terms of beauty professionals but please don't project that over here. Our clients and fellow stylists fully appreciate our honest opinions and evaluations.
We've been listening to folks for years that have just been making it up as they go along. It's real interesting that an issue is made when folks who actually study this thing finally speak up.

@@BlackGirlCurls Sis, of course there's nothing wrong with being frank about what you know. To me - and this is just me - your platform comes off like the information you're spewing is Gospel and there's no room for any other truths. Instead of getting defensive, take a look within. I checked how one sis kindly checked the other sis with the number of years the former sis had known a particular technique. 2001 vs 2017, if my memory serves me correctly. The energy in that exchange was very telling. There's education, then there's wisdom. Nothing is new under the sun. I think you will attract more bees with honey vice vinegar. That's all. No projection. Just observations, sis. That's all. Have a great day.

Hmmm, listening to them extrapolate geometry and shape dimension theories to *hair*, I’d say it’s clear they are masters at this. I’m sure they can tell when a cutting technique won’t work for a client from know-how and experience.
