到 dao is a common Chinese word with multiple meanings. When used as a verb can mean to arrive or to reach. As a preposition it can mean to or towards. And, as an adverb, it can mean until or up to. Dao is often used together with another Chinese word to form compound words which we will be covering in this video.
The Chinese character Dao has eight strokes all together. The right hand side represents a knife DAO in Chinese. The left hand side ZHI has the same meaning as DAO. ZHI in it’s old form indicates a bird flying down from the sky and reach the Earth, which is TU 土in Chinese.

Hi I was watching a chinese drama and when the characters reach a destination they always say "dao le" or 到了. Is this a shortened way of saying we arrived?
Yes. Conversational way to say arrived. 😉
[ 到达 ] 中国不太难,[ 达到 ] 中国人的口语能力才难。
I think that 到达 is used for physical destinations.
And 达到 is used for abstract destinations.
到达 is followed by a destination. 达到 is followed by an abstract noun like 目标/ 程度。
到底吗?
