Why did they get him to play one of the most serious characters in the entire franchise. It makes no sense
Roland would ask , in most serious military voice, is she using explosives with due diligence, and if she is, to go on and use them. May also give her some pointers just for sake of explosives not getting the friendlies.

The thing about movies based on video games is that they target a very specific audience: fans of the game said movie is based on. Suffice it to say, if the fans of the game aren't interested, you don't really have another audience to fall back on. At this point, the best Hollywood can hope for is the movie being "so bad it's good" a la the Postal movie.

Roland in this: Roland is black, so who’s the biggest name black actor we can get? Kevin Hart, the loud, boisterous comedian? Great!
Lilith in the games: socially awkward nerd who puts on a femme fatale persona to hide it. Clearly in her 20’s-30’s
Lilith in this: Middle-aged Star Lord wannabe
Tina in the games: absolutely insane. Obsessed with sexy ladies and explosions, captures the man who killed her parents then forces him to participate in a tea party while electrocuting him to death.
Tina in this: generic preteen girl archetype as seen in every other movie.
Claptrap in the games: Silly but annoying robot buddy on the surface, but is desperately lonely because of how obnoxious others find him and also has a slightly concerning sadistic streak.
Claptrap in this: Jack Black shitting himself. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack Black and the writing is a separate issue, but there are a million other roles in the BL franchise that Jack Black would be better suited for, and Claptrap’s voice is perhaps the single most iconic of any characters. Why not hire the original voice actor, or at least a decent impression?
They really pulled a Hollywood on this one. It feels like no one on the production staff has interacted with Borderlands beyond skimming the wiki. The casting clearly prioritizes name recognition over having actors who fit the roles they’re in. All personality has been sanded down to a generic Guardians of the Galaxy knock-off with none of the charm of Guardians or the source material.
tiny tina actor is closer to 20 than to preteen
Deadpool and wolverine is now a benchmark movie. I can't imagine BL Movie even badly closely to as good as the original game.

As a huge fan and big player of Borderlands [(1500+ hours on all borderlands, played EVERY single game (tales + new tales from the borderlands included)]. This hurts, A LOT.

I’m only aware of some of the Borland’s story, characters, etc. I played a few times and thought it was awesome. My kids loved this series. I always wanted to keep playing it but I didn’t make the time.
Definitely get a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe on this but I’m fine with that as long as they don’t cram 70’s-80’s songs in completely ripping off James Gunn. The group of misfits on an adventure seems fun. I’ll allow it.
Totally fine with Cate Blanchett in the movie. She can play basically any role at any age. I hope she does a good job with the character but I’m not so familiar with all of the characters. Kevin Hart…I’m fine with it but at the same time…why? The character seemed much larger in the game and I didn’t get the comedian vibe from him.
Jack Black as Clap Trap is awesome.
I’m sure I’ll enjoy it but fanboys will nitpick. They’re going to screw a lot of it up for sure but as an outsider it won’t bother me so much. I’ve done my fair share of nitpicking comic book movies so it’s to be expected.
@@GhostShooz I can see that opinion for sure. It is lazy and they are doing it to get asses in seats based on name recognition for sure. I really liked the voice actor from the game. I figured it would have made more sense just to use that actor since his character is CGI. But I also like Jack Black and think he will do well.
I’m not steeped in the games like so many fans so of course I’m okay with the casting. I’m part of the problem.

I now understand how jack felt when we killed his daughter...
Here's what it comes down to for me. They have a new villain while seemingly redoing the first game's plot, and they are doing it by putting together 4 playable characters and 2 NPCs as the main cast from a time frame across 4 separate games. That's a mess to start with, but it's even worse when you consider who those characters are.
Clap is only important starting 1.5 or 2 arguably (Game 1 it was just a series of robots that you rescued for inventory space) it looks like they're using him like it's game 2 here, 1.5 being significant because that is when his entire series is shut down and destroyed and he alone is saved by the remnants of Shadow-Trap.
Tannis, Roland, and Lillith from game 1, and Roland and Lillith have a kind of romance that never went anywhere so that's at least legitimate, but they are all a max of 30s in the game and they look like they are minimum of '40s here, with some looking more like '50s and '60s, probably well past searching for buried treasure age.
Krieg is from game 2 and should never have been ported without Maya, his love interest/best friend/balm to his insanity and hope for a normal life. Krieg, IIRC, isn't even interested in the Vault, he was just following her onto the train when they got blown up by Handsome Jack and that's what made him join. They don't even have him saying a line during the commercial, which means they are either saving it for the movie, trusting that this is enough to bring people in, or they did it terribly and are trying to cover it up for as long as possible to recoup some of their losses.
And then there's Tiny Tina. Here, not so tiny as she is wearing all the stuff from game 3, also without looking up at Roland as a surrogate father figure and seemingly without the trauma that made her one of the best characters in this series, and without the upbeat attitude and humor that made her such a likable one as well. Someone said to me looking at her in this trailer is like hearing Lil Jon say 'No', or 'Stop partying and go home', it's not in character. It's not who this person is.
Their characters don't mix well here and don't really play well off of one another looking just like every other found family thing out there. Also, the villain here looks like a cookie cutout with all the charm and character of cardboard.
This movie looks terrible and unless this is the worst of it, I'm not seeing it in theater.

WE LEFT CLAPTRAP HOME ALONE!
So, we have: A Dr. Tannis who has white hair and is way older than Roland. A Tiny Tina who has an outfit that resembles Borderlands 3 yet is young like in Borderlands 2. Roland is still alive. We are missing Mordercai and Brick, yet somehow we have Krieg with them even though we do not have Maya who is the one keeping Krieg relatively sane. Did they even play the games before planning this movie?
In this version Krieg is suppose to be Tina's pet psycho who loyally follows her around instead. Really destroys any depth to his character to just make him some kids pet.

@@roachdoggjr6893 I very highly doubt it. They're basically trying to do the plot of the first gamr, to which Euridium would be completely irrelevant to it. Especially without Handsome Jack who is heavily tied to that plotline as he was the one who funded those experiments. Even if they were good writers, it'd be hard to shoe-horn that in.

Imagine a bus ride with "No rest for the Wicked" playing, the camera panning through its interiors showing off our cast with slight flashbacks of their abilities while a wise old bus driver gives us a short rundown of the plot and the video ends with him saying "Get off my bus." Oh wait, that's just the iconic opening for Borderlands 1, which would have been a perfect way to do this trailer.

They have the benefit of the entire borderland series to pull from. They have the roadmap. This looks like it will be as true to the source as the resident evil movies, and pretty much Guardians of the Galaxy. Cate Blanchet is a 54 year old Star Lord.

And I wasn't sure about Kevin as Roland but now I'm not sure about ANY of the expect the guy playing Krieg (WHO shouldn't even be in it, where Brink and Mordecai?) The cast is weird: Roland is too small, Tina is too big, Lilith is too old, Tannis is too elderly, Krieg is not Brick, and Claptrap is Jack Blacked.
Jack Black is the only good thing out of this, besides maybe the accuracy of the costumes and sets. Like I can't complain visually, but the castings and character choices.. man...
Jack Black is entirely unnecessary. Just use the original VA for Claptrap - he'll be a looooooot cheaper, aside from being better.@@menti9980

@@AlexBarbu no you’re just wrong. The CGI is literally not bad. The VFX are not bad. Literally the Runner car is the exact same look as BL2. The Marauders, Psychos, Atlas Grunts, all look just like the games. The CGI/VFX are literally the best part of the trailer, I just won’t stand for such an idiotic response. So Hollywood "reimagined" Borderlands characters, someone at Gearbox greenlighted the actor choices, and now we get to watch this trailer, confirming that NO ONE should pay money to see this movie. Instead of besmirching beloved franchises with terrible ideas, try listening to the avid fans for your "idea" approvals since we are the ones that know what is acceptable. Now go recast ALL the mains and reshoot every scene that has them in it.

That's an extreme example, but the same logic applies for the same reasons. It simply wouldn't/ doesn't make sense, especially if there were far better, more fitting options to stay as close to the sorce material as possable. Which is what fans want in a project like this.

You can just imagine that there are people along the way during the production of this movie that really cared about what they were working on, but between corporate interference from people with no understanding or care of the property, miscasting, and any number of behind the scene problems, this is what came out of the project. It's incredible that so many talented actors, so much talented movie production staff, and so much money can all be wasted on what is ultimately a doomed failure of a corporate product.

Hollywood guys are fantastic: they buy a franchise including an entire lore, characters with full stories, designs and talented voice actors and somehow they manage to screw that up, really amazing.
