That tricky slappy flammy rolly thing that always turns up in Wassolonka (Wassolon Toulounbeh). Here I show two different versions: The first is the one used by Mamady Keita and the second is from Iya Sako. To be honest my slaps and tones could be clearer and I still haven't perfected this by any means (although this drum had excellent slaps but not very bright slaps at all...a fact that was confirmed by Iya). I might re-record at some point but it's certainly clear enough to hear.
Here's a basic score, where small letters represent the flams and S and T refer to slap and tone:
Mamady Version: stTSttSTtsTTstTSS
Iya Version: ttSttSTTstTSttSTT Видеоклипы
Tricky, slappy, flammy rolly thing, what a way you have with words Jon!
This helped so much!
Wow that’s tricky
Thanks for that, well explained, didn't know the Mamady version, like the way the slaps in the phrase alternate hands, play 3:2. Another tricky lick for the practice room.
Glad you found it useful. I've come across a few different versions over the years but they all use the same principle. Definitely something worth practicing for your technique though m(I still have some work to do...)
By the way Sen (and I've been meaning to mention this ever since it happened but forgot every time I saw you)...when we played with Iya last summer and it rained all day, you asked him to play the wassolonka roll and he played something totally different to what I show here. I remember thinking that's bloody typical at the time, but for some reason forgot to say.
Anyway this is the version he showed me...clearly he has several different versions that he plays and that is not at all untypical for a djembe fola. I think it's another indication that things are not as fixed as non- West Africans sometimes think they are.
hi I'm trying to recall what he played at Millhouse when I asked him, think I asked him about a flam pattern in Wassalonka in triplets ; LrLRlRLrLRlR but he played a total new variation on it I didn't recognise .....he may have played a new roll phrase as well, just my memory is hazy. As you say djembefola have other versions of solo phrases than the ones we think we know )
D Sen Hi Sen. Just thought I'd let you know that my new online djembe
learning website is now live at www.djembeweaver.com. Please share it as
much as possible! If I get enough subscribers it will allow me to create
great new content every month including professional quality videos and
much more besides! Thanks for your continued support :)
OK Thanks will take a look at that, sounds good
stTSttSTtsTTstTSS... Hay Weaver, can you help me out here. I cant figure out to write this out stTSttSTtsTTstTSS in bars of three
Hi Jon, great video!
Why don't you put some notation at the bottom of the screen with the correct handing. I would find that much more helpful.
Cheers Jamie (I presume...). Er...If I knew how to do that then I would. I'm going to redo all the video and more at some point anyway, with an over-the-shoulder view so you can see the hands from the other way round etc. Watch this space!
By the way I've put a basic score at the bottom of the description section. Hope it helps...
