A little explanation of a djembe exercise that helped me with my tones. Sorry for the gormless expression and for sticking out my tongue at one point (bugger - two points). I was concentrating!

Glad to know it's been of some use to someone. It really helped me. I don't think Nigel would consider you to be a drongo by the way. I have watched some of your vids and enjoyed them. He is talking about vids like the 'Expert Village' ones where someone who can't play tries to demonstarte slap and tone with terrible technique. Very unhelpful to all. You play a nice non-traditional style :)

@nigsadler Thanks. Nice to know I'm better than a drongo! I practised this exercise for between one and two hours a day last summer over 4 months and my tones have really improved. There's no substitue for real practice.

Yeah the Expert Village Vids are "Classic" ;) I Have No "Real" Training Just Watching and Learning From The Net,Friends, etc so I Really Appreciate the Fact you Think my playing is "Nice" I Have about a Year in to Learning the Djembe and it Has Been one Wild Ride so Far...The Distinction in Tone Has been the Hardest Technique to Learn and this exercise Gave me a Big Jump! :) I passed it along to The Drum Circle I Have Started up (Pulse Community Drumming) ..

Nice one Jon - way better than your average RUclips Djembe Drongo
I have a few of these so maybe I should practice. I don't practice a fraction of what I should do. ADV 2012?? Hope you can make it

Love the instruction! Where have you learned from? Can you recommend any high quality video instruction that teaches like you do? Really enjoy your attention to detail i have seen in a few of your posted videos.

Hmmn...when I first started on djembe I played with DJs at dance clubs and parties. I never studied anything. Just improvised. When I started studying West African djembe and started practicing technique I lost a lot of my ability to just play. The thing is I was facinated by the sounds the djembefolas got out of their drums. After 12 years of practice I am just getting back to being able to improvise like I used to....but with much much better sounds. Worth it? I think so!

Me too. That one popped a while back and I haven't come across another one (people tend to hang on to them). I've got about 6 pure white ones though and I like them almost as much. Nice videos by the way. Do you go on djembefola cot dom?

I've had several good teachers - Maitre Samsou, Iya Sako, Nansady Keita mostly. I lived in africa for three years too so I got a lot of practice in then! I don't know of any really good DVDs where people explain stuff like that. Mamady Keita does instructional DVDs, which you can get from the Tamtam Mandeng website (amongst other places). You need to find a good teacher in your local area really. Where are you?

OK. my advice is to go to djembefola cot dom (you tube won't let me write the actual address), get yourself a user name, introduce yourself in the 'introductions' section of the board, then post a question asking for contacts in your area. I almost guarantee there will be someone near you (there are members from all over the USA). I could post the question for you but you'll benefit from the forum anyway...

.I am not necessarily Trying to Be the Most Technical Player Just Trying to Take the Instrument To A Different Level and I believe That too much Perfection Can Hinder the Creative Process..
