    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    The Bride (Uma Thurman) says hello to an old friend, Black Mamba style.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Perhaps the most highly anticipated film of 2003, Kill Bill Vol. 1 marked the return of renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino after a six-year hiatus. Re-teaming the director with Uma Thurman for the first time since 1994's Pulp Fiction, the film was originally the first half of what was to be a three-hour-plus movie before being split into two films. Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When The Bride opts to leave the outfit for a life of marital bliss, it doesn't sit well with her boss, Bill (David Carradine), so he has her former cohorts, played by Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, and Michael Madsen, show up at the nuptials, leaving behind a blood bath. Miraculously, The Bride survives a bullet to the head and, four years later, she sets out for revenge against her four assassins and their employer. The story is concluded in Kill Bill Vol. 2, released six months later.

Vernita knew about it, that's why she wasn't even that surprised when she came. she just says "you want some coffee?" plus she already has a speech prepared about her daughter, just to try to negotiate her way out of it.

    I actually really like how many "cat-fights" are in this movie. The film doesn't draw any attention to the fact that females are fighting, it's just as badass as any male on male Bruce Lee fight scene.
    Then once she actually faces off against a male, Bill, it's much more an emotional battle than a physical one, and the physical portion is very brief. In a way it's the most mature battle in the film.

    One of the greatest things I love about this movie was that Vivica's character is a stay at home mom. All of the former assassins ended up in positions nobody thought they ever would. Out of all the fight scenes, the only one where you find yourself fully vested in the character, and hope things turn out differently, is Vernita Green/Copperhead. Not only is the fight scene the most believable, she is the only one in the movie, besides Beatrix that is the most relatable. Vernita completely mirrors Beatrix Kiddos own desire to quit the life and fade into suburban anonymity. Beatrix realises the parallel, and delays her imminent execution. It should have been Vernita with the question mark besides her name, not Elle. Summation- Vivica Fox took this scene and breathed a damaged soul into it and made it human.

    • @stephabo3787
      @stephabo3787 10 лет назад +49

      Look at Vernita's skill years later. She had to have been still training on the side. She went into anonymity but she never forgot her skill. Even after getting married and having a child her skill was still in top form and she was in great shape. Most people would have been sluggish or slow after quitting but Vernita was fined tuned.
      She had to have been still training without her husband knowing. You never forget your skill but you can become sluggish if you don't keep it up.

  • @TheShockwaveDragon
    @TheShockwaveDragon 9 лет назад +887

    I've had a knife pulled on me once before, and let me tell you, the feelings you experience at times like 1:29 in the standoff are unlike any other.
    For a director of movies that likes to use as much comedy in his films as Quentin Tarantino, he does an excellent job of capturing the tense, horrifying atmosphere in a fight as ugly and brutal as knife combat.

    • @TheShockwaveDragon
      @TheShockwaveDragon 8 лет назад +48

      +Imani:D Yeah, it certainly wasn't fun at all -- the adrenaline and fear really do give you jitters during and after near misses like at 1:31.

    • @TheShockwaveDragon
      @TheShockwaveDragon 8 лет назад +70

      +Imani:D It was at a house and a disagreement got out of hand. The other guy -- who wasn't very stable to begin with, at the time this happened -- resented my attempting to deescalate the situation enough that he went and grabbed a kitchen knife. I didn't have anywhere to go because of how close quarters everything was, and the situation didn't allow for me to just up and run either, so rather than get backed into a wall and possibly slashed or stabbed I made the snap decision of trying to regain some control of the situation by turning the tables and advancing on him instead when he came back with it (incidentally, I now carry at least a pocket knife with me at all times).
      I'm not ashamed to admit that I was really freaking out on the inside and jumpy as hell since I was unarmed and the guy was off his rocker, but after he missed his swings and backed himself into a corner, I was able to get close enough to disarm him. He grabbed something else to swing at me after I let him go that was less dangerous than the knife, but was a lot easier to take away, so I disarmed him again, and subdued him until he snapped out of it and began to simmer down.
      This movie is a trip to watch, right down to the eye contact between the two. Fox and Thurman are hellacious actors.

Her movements, her facial expressions, her body language...it all screams action hero/action movie/badass fighter. Imagine a younger Vivica playing one of the Dora Milaje, or one of the Amazons... Every fight scene in Kill Bill with whoever is on the check list, has their own story line - which I really enjoyed. With Vernita, they definitely dived into both characters battling their own self identity of a killer and of a new life at home and a mother. Conveniently, this was battle occurred at Vernita's home which could symbolize that she'll never be at peace with her past even minutes away from her daughter coming home from school. She dies in her own home, with her daughter watching ... No Mother should be subjected to have their seed experience that, but we're then faced with the karma that Vernita had no such thoughts years before at Beatrix's wedding.
    QT was something else during Kill Bill.

    Door opens. Chaos ensues. Constant quick cuts. Many less than a second which I usually hate, but great camera angles ensure that we "get it". Then strangling and the cuts are slower. Then more chaos, quick cuts and great angles again. That knive through the dining table, followed by the kick to tip it over is just so tight). And it all slows down again to that great reaction from Vernita Green when the school bus arrives.

      No she did not go into it immediately...remember she went to tokyo and waited at least a month for a new sword...then killed oren then vernita. This story wasnt told chronologically

    I love cat fights. I have seen this film before. This is my number one favourite. Kill bill volume one had got to be the ultimate film of all time.

      This is not a "Cat fight." These women were deadly assassins trained in combat.
