I'll tell you straight up, I have a half eagle that is exactly like yours: PCGS CAC 1899.... but its an 1899-S. I'm keeping it the way it is because of the error, but in your case you should get it re -holdered just because of the dates rarity. Lord forbid if you have to sell it, and whoever buys it isn't honest, then they could sell it for the 1877-P and cause some turmoil. If it was a more common date I would say leave it, but in this case you should send it back.

I went to sell a Morgan just a month ago. It was an 82-S MS66. Or so I thought. I put it under my microscope to take some closeups and I see it. There's an '83-CC in the holder. Needless to say, I was surprised. I called PCGS, and they must have checked my inventory, but they knew, which I did not, that it was switched, AND I OWNED the other one! I also have the '83-CC MS65 Holder with an '82-S in it. I don't even know which coin is supposed to have what grade. Simply amazing. I changed my mind and told PCGS I'm keeping them the way they are. I haven't heard back yet.

Time to put AI in coin grading. It may even speed up the grading system. There was one RUclipsr who was mad at PCGS when he sent his silver coin to be graded and yes he did get a strait problem free grade. The problem was that it looked like someone spilled water on his coin and allowed it to dry on it. He had pictures prior to sending and there were no marks. As long the human factor is there in the grading system, not only errors can be done but even damage and they would deny it.

We paid the extra fee and everything, and they just labeled it as if it were a regular submission. The True View image of our coin is on their CoinFacts app, and it's undeniable. I called them and asked about having them label it properly since I paid for it, and they pretty much told me "too bad" and I'd have to resubmit it... meaning pay them a second time...

Again, if it still has great details, but gets labeled cleaned, does that automatically eliminate the graded value or would serious collectors still buy it at a discount? Basically, is there a scale to determine cleaned coin value based on level it was cleaned?

I'd take it to a show they're grading live at. If you leave it in the holder as it, someone is going to get screwed down the line paying for the wrong coin.

I'd have no pity for that someone because they should always buy the coin not the silly plastic box it comes in. Always buy the coin.

pcgs and ngc always give lower grades than the coin is sometimes i have two of the same coin and the higher-grade coin is less than the better condition one

On mistaken labels they will tell you to send it back and they will correct the label. I am not aware of any mislabeled coins that hold a higher value due to the label. I could be wrong there. I don't think PCGS will give you any special monetary breaks for it. They may not even cover the shipping of the coin back to them from what I heard. The relabeling should be pretty quick as it doesn't need to go in the line for grading again.
Good luck on the issue! I haven't sent anything in for grading at PCGS. I've been worried about what they would say was cleaned and such!!

Keep it as a PCGS error and something most don't have.

Great video! Max, was the correct info for the 1877-s $2-1/2 piece listed on their form? Did PCGS compound a possible error on the paperwork and thought it was 1877? There are supposed to be 3 graders and a finalizer. How did it get past 4 persons? If you speak to them, have them rush it back to you as compensation. Be well! Ed

There were 3 graders. The original grader, a first grader and a second grader. :)

I would make them pay you the value of there mistake £3000 bucks....They screwed up and at the end of the day. And its there reputation on the line here....

This blows my mind and goes against everything I know about the grading process... This means two graders missed this obvious error....as someone getting ready to buy it, I would think its a fake slab, pcgs counterfeit.

I would call them up and ask them what should be done to rectify the problem! You paid for the service and that service was subpar and resulted in a mistake! They should fix it at no cost! (I mean, this is my opinion though)

The error slab is worth more as it is . Pcgs will want u to send it back to fix it it's like a tarnish on there name . But ppl like error slabs they don't happen alot but they do happen .

Better because it’s a PCGS error. Hang on to it or sell it to someone who is willing to pay for the error. Thx for sharing
