Love your channel. Learning a lot. Are you weight limited on fuel. In airplanes we can almost never take on full fuel due to gross weight limits and sometimes weight distribution limits. Do those affect trucks too?
Yes but rarely. Here's how it works. Some loads like potatoes and beer, they want to load you to the max. They have you scale on the way in and then they fill up the trailer until your gross wt is 79,990. If you don't fuel up before getting there, you could be in that situation. Some places will let you tell them that you still need 1200 lbs of fuel for example, so they'll fill you to 78,790 lbs instead. But they really want you to fuel up first. I did have 1 load where my gross wt after loading was 600 lbs over. We had a ways to the next weigh station so we burned the fuel off before we were weighed again. It all worked out.
Weight limit on trucks is per axle and gross weight. There is a small consideration for center of gravity which is why tanks are slightly forward low and midway between the axles to apply what weight fuel adds proportionately to the vehicle. Most trucks have a sliding 5th wheel to position the load above the rear axles to keep from placing to much weight on one spot primarily for bridge engineering requirements which is what baselines law for DOT regulations and minimum interstate bridge spans must meet. Sorry bit to in depth I guess. Where you are worried about stressing the air frame we are set up to distribute the load so we don't wear out the road before regular wear is predicted to fatigue a bridge out. Your overloaded scenario is the wings get ripped off on rotation during take off or by turbulence during flight. Our consideration is we don't press our tires through pavement on hot days or break bridge sections by having to many pounds per foot in the span of a bridge.

7:42 I always thought these pumps looked stupid and I was like why and how would anyone use since it’s all plastic no screens buttons nothing, but now I see why, bc of the dual fuel tanks
Yes, definitely. As for how much, that depends on the size of the reefer fuel tank. Most are around 20 gallons, or about 1/5 of a normal 100 gallon tank. So a out 1/5 of a bottle should do. But since it's OK to have more, I usually would use about 1/4 to 1/3 of a bottle. You do NOT want that reefer to stop running.
@JJ the trucker The DEF pumps more slowly and cuts off because that particular place is not doing as the should and rotating those Def handles. When this isn't happening regularly then the flow rate gets obstructed because the liquid can't get past the rock hard crystallized synthic urine (

I hate to criticize but underneath the fuel cap area. On the tanks they actually say right on them, do not overfill. In fact it's against our company policy to do that. But I understand why you did it
Ya know, I don't kniw if it'll run or not. I know I ran low once and was getting alerts all over the dash. DOT would know by all the black soot coming out of the exhaust.
Running out of def will put the truck into derate, which means the truck will loss power and eventually shutdown, without def exhaust system gets blocked, and can be a costly repair, both in cost and down time.
1). When you're at 1/4 of a tank or 2). When you find fuel that's really cheap! As a Prime CD, you fuel when their algorithm tells you to. It's usually pretty spot on, so I almost always use it as well.
JJ the Trucker well let me rephrase my question: when should you fuel when near the customer to load and unload. It’s obvious to fill up when you’re like in the middle of the US on a coast to coast load. I was LO for colonial freight and there were times when I had to know when to fill up and not run out and when not to fill up to eat.
At Prime, you don't pay for the fuel out of your pocket, it comes out of your settlement. And it's tied to the load your on so if you fuel up on Wednesday but that load doesn't deliver until Friday, the cost of the fuel won't come out of this Friday's check, it'll come out the same check that you get paid for the load. So you don't have to worry about whether to fuel or eat.
At Prime, it depends on if you are a company driver or owner /lease. If company, then Prime pays for all fuel. If owner/lease, then Prime gives you a supplement to help out. Makes it so you're paying a lot less. Just over half. And their fuel network (in addition to being huge) has very deep discounts. Usually over a dollar off the posted price.
Does the fuel always get charged to your paycheck or do you ever have the chance to pay for it there? Seems like you could get some sweet credit card rewards.
I could do it that way if it's outside of the Prime Fuel Network, but I'd have to call in to get a PO for it. And while the points are nice, I only get the deep fuel discounts if I use the ComData card. The discounts are WAY more than the points. Believe me, I've thought about it lol.
I have a friend with a diesel pickup, whenever he would pull a trailer with a bobcat, DOT would stop him and check his truck tanks and send him on his way.
Yes, for company and owner/op's drivers. Company drivers don't pay for fuel at all and they can get fuel bonuses. Owner/op's pay a deeply discounted rate for fuel and it is automatically deducted from their settlement at the end of the week, so they don't pay for it up front.

Good question... Not 100% sure on this one. I pull the trigger, go to the other side and start that one too, then I clean the windshield, windows and mirrors. They've clicked off by then, then I start topping off. I can say to fuel both diesel tanks, DEF and reefer, plus clean the windows, it's about 12-15 minutes.
For the actual fueling, yes. However taking into account the entire stop from exiting the highway to getting back on the Highway and everything in between, I always factor in about 30 minutes.

Even during the previous administration, fuel prices were going up. When yiu look at fuel prices as much as we do on the road, yiu find it doesn't matter who's in charge of the country. It's the greedy oil companies that make all the difference. Personally, I'll take some rough years if it means the eventual end of them.
Love from here in japan i was wondering how do you become trucker in america?? Im think of moven to america from japan anyways how do you shift the truck or drive it and i love the video
Welcome. To be honest, I don't know how that works but there are a lot of international drivers, so I know it's possible. Best thing is to contact a recruiter and they'll go over everything with you. Visit driveforprime.com/?r=PAUJAJ and fill out the form. A recruiter will call you back pretty quickly. Tell them JJ Paulson (Driver Code PAUJAJ) sent you. Once thats worked out, you can go through the free training course, get your CDL, then go through paid company training. That's it. The new trucks nowadays are mostly automatics, so shifting isnt an issue, and they're pretty easy to drive.
@@JJtheTrucker okie i see and thanks my friend , see i always liked trucks and now that im 23 im able to save money move to america and find my way into a truck like yours maybe even import a MAN
Do you prefer automatic or the old school gear shifting? How many speed transmission does this volvo have? Aside from driver comfort, are the automatics really better in terms of efficiency? Maintenance?
Since it's a federal offense for Truckers and we can lose our license (which means no job), that thought quickly perishes. Just not worth it. The tax really isn't that much.
Good questions on the automated transmissions. I learned cars on a 5 speed and loved manuals for years. When I got my first auto, I hated it. After a few of them and then going back to stick, I didn't like the stick as much. Especially in traffic. In trucks, the autos are so easy. You can still manually change the gears like you can in the newer cars, but no clutch pedal. Plus it works so well with the adaptive cruise and hill decent control. Personally, I'm a big proponent of them now. I can't speak for the Volvos but I can say freightliner and Peterbilt both have 12 speeds. Efficiency is better, especially if you use the cruise. Maintenance, I can't really say, but historically automatics usually need more maintenance.
If refer fuel just diesel and is not taxed, following this fueling sequence, why not just fill refer first then DEF, then actual tanks? Or is this proposed sequence illegal?
2 reasons... 1,yes it's very illegal to put untaxed fuel into the tractor and 2, you'd have to pull forward to get to the Reefer, then back up to reach the def and tractor tanks. By then, someone is behind you.
Thx for the answer. I just found it odd that you used the same diesel pump for both but at different intervals. Stay safe out there. One other question....does anyone “pump” their arm anymore to have you guys honk your air horns?
I’ve often heard that farm equipment fuel is different colors to make it harder to use in a private vehicle. I also see a lot of pickup trucks on the road with a big metal tank in the back with some sort of pump? Can they be stopped and inspected for use of tax free colored fuel in vehicle engine or is this not common?
to be more accurate the African bush elephant weighs 13000 lb so if your gross vehicle weight is 78000 you're essentially hauling exactly 6 African bush elephants
It's Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It cleans up the exhaust to make it clean for the environment. Check this video out: ruclips.net/video/BDI54G34Ooo/видео.html
A weigh station literally weighs the truck. We're only allowed to be 80,000 lbs total with 17,000 lbs on each axel. It's to keep the roads from being ruined by heavy trucks, plus for safety. I can do a video on the pre-pass and weigh station bypasses. That's a great suggestion. Thank you
@@JJtheTrucker oh hi there! Didn't think the channel would reply. I did watch the video. I am familiar with what the Europeans call it(AdBlue). It is high school chemistry and it's interesting how they're fighting oxides of Nitrogen with a relatively common material(urea). Most other pollutants require fairly expensive catalysts to ensure that emissions are within acceptable. I'm guessing though we're not far away from ditching fluids entirely if we move to electric (unless we use fuel cells in conjunction with batteries). I'm interested to see what the future has for the transportation industry!
There is, so when you fuel the reefer, the pump adds in a red dye. If they do a fuel inspection and you have red dye in your engine tanks, BUSTED! Tax evasion. Plus every once in a while you'll see what looks to be undercover DOT at the truck stops. Wouldn't doubt if they're looking for this.
That's a good question. Of course safety and fuel milage are the main reasons but with how the truck manufacturers do the gear ratios you'd think they could get fuel mileage to be good at 70. That just leaves safety, and there are studies out there showing that slower is safer (to an extent). I do wish it was set to 70 though. At least I'm not a company driver. Those guys are governed at 58! I'm at 65.
@@JJtheTrucker I would lose my mind if our (cr england) trucks were governed at 58! I wish I can go at least 68, a lot of companies don't govern or govern high like 80.

Do the drivers pay for the fuel or does the company or how does the fueling situation work? Great video.
Often the case the driver punches in codes to maybe save 20 cents per gallon with the fuel savers card plus on top of the truck fuel card
Believe me, I've thought about it lol.
how bout fuel island etiquette?
Michael Jackson. Pyrotechnics. Yeah, I got it. Guess I'm old. Lol.
Lol. You and me both.
The fuel mileage being off could be because you may have bigger tires than what came with it from the factory and its not calibrated
But then the speedometer and miles ould also be off. I've confirmed both are accurate.
Hey JJ do you hear still about tanks being dipped to checks drivers are filling with official taxed fuel?
I have no idea what that is, so I guess not.
Jj when they dip the tanks they are looking for people who fill up with red fuel or off road diesel which is non taxed.
Interesting. Haven't heard anything about it.
I have a friend with a diesel pickup, whenever he would pull a trailer with a bobcat, DOT would stop him and check his truck tanks and send him on his way.
Does the company have a fuel card for company drivers?
Yes, for company and owner/op's drivers. Company drivers don't pay for fuel at all and they can get fuel bonuses. Owner/op's pay a deeply discounted rate for fuel and it is automatically deducted from their settlement at the end of the week, so they don't pay for it up front.

Great JJ 👍👏
Thanks. Mostly thanks to Junior.
Is your DEF half empty or half full?
In life, the glass is always half-full. But with DEF it seems like the tank is always half-empty.
JJ how long is your average fill up time? from when you pull the trigger to stop?
Good question... Not 100% sure on this one. I pull the trigger, go to the other side and start that one too, then I clean the windshield, windows and mirrors. They've clicked off by then, then I start topping off.
I can say to fuel both diesel tanks, DEF and reefer, plus clean the windows, it's about 12-15 minutes.
@@JJtheTrucker thanks so much for the reply- great series you have made! congrats
Do you think 12-15 min is an average time for fueling during usual stops?
For the actual fueling, yes. However taking into account the entire stop from exiting the highway to getting back on the Highway and everything in between, I always factor in about 30 minutes.
@@JJtheTrucker thanks again man useful information- keep making videos!

That answer is in the first 6 seconds of the video. LOL
Nice to see a video from the good old days before the new administration”s energy policy sent fuel prices through the roof.
Even during the previous administration, fuel prices were going up. When yiu look at fuel prices as much as we do on the road, yiu find it doesn't matter who's in charge of the country. It's the greedy oil companies that make all the difference. Personally, I'll take some rough years if it means the eventual end of them.
What's the tank on the trailer for ?
It's for the Reefer.
The Reefer? you ask?

IS reefer fuel same as diesel as what goes in the tractor?
Yep, it's the same fuel. It's just not taxed.
@@JJtheTrucker lol 😂 I drive a dieeel pickup.... thinking what I'm thinking lmao
They sure do!
💪📯
Very and if caught pretty sure you can get jailed.
I’ve often heard that farm equipment fuel is different colors to make it harder to use in a private vehicle. I also see a lot of pickup trucks on the road with a big metal tank in the back with some sort of pump? Can they be stopped and inspected for use of tax free colored fuel in vehicle engine or is this not common?
hi great vido who pays for the fuel
If you're a company driver, Prime pays for the fuel. If you're an owner or lease op, you pay for the fuel and Prime pays you back for some of it.
What app were you using???
The Love's app
to be more accurate the African bush elephant weighs 13000 lb so if your gross vehicle weight is 78000 you're essentially hauling exactly 6 African bush elephants
Good to know.
But, what if they shave down there? Are they then only African elephants? And I'd imagine that would "shave off" a few pounds LOL
I didn't knew Freightliner had Mercedes interiors..
Yep, both are owned by Daimler.
What is def for
It's Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It cleans up the exhaust to make it clean for the environment.

Seen on GPS prosser Wa?
Local?
Interesting you have to tell it you're getting Diesel for the trailer when it's the same Diesel that the truck uses.
Yes... And no...
The reefer fuel is not taxed, which is why you have to separate it.
That and safest to hang the fuel line up then move forward. Prevents the pump from reseting as well.

So you actually pay a portion of the fuel price?
As a lease/owner op, I pay for my own fuel. Prime pays a portion of my fuel, plus I get deep discounts using the Prime network.
@@JJtheTrucker oh ok so if im company they pay for the fuel?
Yes. Prime pays for the fuel for company drivers. Truck Washes, too.
Almost 300$ on fuel. Holy crap

Cheap fuel to at the time of recording.
How do weigh station bypasses work? And what is the purpose of a weigh station?

If the refer fuel isn’t taxed, there must be a scam of filling the engine tanks.
Dang man that truck is missing a third pedal.

That joke is so original, I don't think I've heard it more than 400 times yet. 😁😁😁
Why do companies govern their trucks at 65 when most highways are minimum 70-75?
That's a good question. Of course safety and fuel milage are the main reasons but with how the truck manufacturers do the gear ratios you'd think they could get fuel mileage to be good at 70. That just leaves safety, and there are studies out there showing that slower is safer (to an extent). I do wish it was set to 70 though. At least I'm not a company driver. Those guys are governed at 58! I'm at 65.
At my company we have an 06, and an 07 Volvo. Since we own them, the speedometer says 80, and the trucks will go 80:)
@@JJtheTrucker I would lose my mind if our (cr england) trucks were governed at 58! I wish I can go at least 68, a lot of companies don't govern or govern high like 80.
