One of the best episodes of the entire series.
One of the best episodes of television of any fiction series.
This and "In the Pale Moonlight" are the best of Star Trek, I say.
that and 'in the pale moonlight' and 'the visitor'
I'd suggest arguably one of the strongest episodes of any of the Star trek series; really it should have been nimated for a tv award of some sort.
It certainly redeemed the entire first season of DS9.
Star Trek DS9 goes deeper and darker than most of the others. Duet is one of Trek's finest hours.
This episode encapsulates everything that makes Deep Space Nine great
Not only the great character performance and the very strong subject matter, but going the extra step of not having the happy ending in order to further drive the point home. I can only recall one instance where TNG was brave enough to do that, and that was "The Outcast"
What about "Lower Decks" in season 7?
@@DWLeggette only partially. The Outcast directly affected Riker, whereas the death in Lower Decks was primarily involving the other minor characters, who had their complete arc in the episode
This is the only Star Trek episode that brings me to tears whether movie, show, old or new
I don't know how much of the series you've seen, but that moment at the end, where Kira for the first time in her life realizes that being a Cardassian doesn't deserve a death sentence...is one of the most important moments in the entire series. This will never be brought up again, but without this moment, the series would be very different.
That actor deserved ALL the awards for that performance.
Agreed! -h
That Actor is Harris Yulin, one of the best character actors in the business.
His resumé of both TV and Movie roles is as long as your arm.
@@cleekmaker00 thanks for the name. I couldn't remember it at the time.
The scene where Marritza was talking to Kira in his cell almost at the end was very moving...
Saw Nana Visitor at a convention not too long after this episode aired. She was asked several questions about it. She revealed she was quite moved my it. So much so, she had several nightmares about the events described .
Marritza wanted to sacrifice himself in order to help Cardassia become something better. What his sacrifice actually did was help Kira to at least start to come to terms with her own rage and pain, and Kira would later play an important role in freeing Cardassia from the Dominion - albeit at a terrible cost. It was tragic, but perhaps it wasn't for nothing after all.
Good point! Definitely a long setup, but that's often how life is.
Fun fact, this episode was a direct homage to a broadway play Leonard Nimoy starred in called The Man in the Glass Booth, where Nimoy played a jew pretending to be a Nazi war criminal who was on trial.
Cool reference! Thanks for letting me know! -h
Probably my favorite of the franchise, not just DS9. Harris Yulin absolutely killed this role.
Even though I know it’s coming, every time I know he’s about to break, my breath catches, and my heart gets stuck in my throat.
Such a good episode, and character growth. Glad you are liking the series so much :)
Thanks for the sub and the comment...and for putting up with me intruding on Heidi's reaction. We sure enjoyed that episode. Hopefully I can pop back in for some of Season 2. -- Jeff
@@POPPOPFIZZLE For sure! I enjoyed your jokes :) DS9 is interesting in that it has a more established overall story arch, so getting to see both your reactions to characters over time will be fun to watch
This is from the first season, and it is the episode where DS 9 showed that it was going to be the best Star Trek series.
Oh you have so many good episodes ahead. Wait till you get to the Pale Moonlight you'll be blown away.
“In The Pale Moonlight” is my second favorite Star Trek episode of all time!!
"IT'S A FAAAAAAKE!"
In addition to several good episodes ahead of you, you also have some episodes featuring Nicole de Boer :(
I think the one thing that makes this fan-favorite all the more amazing, is that it was a "bottle show". It costs extra money to go "on location"- i.e. outdoors on an alien planet - and the CG for battle sequences. So quite often, in the middle of a season, they need a bottle show, where you are using the existing sets, limited guest stars etc, to save on budget. Some of these have been absolutely horrific - "Shades of Grey" on TNG, and "A night in sick bay" on Enterprise. The fact that this bottle show is one of the best ever in DS9, is a reminder that when you have a tight script, good character development, and a great guest star, you don't need a lot of fancy CGI stuff to keep people entertained.
💯 agreed! They did so much right with this one. Thanks so much for watching along! -h
Ds9 has been my favourite show for many years and Kira has always been my favourite character. The level of suffering she has gone through she could easily have made excuses for not moving on in life but she takes the reins of life and is an absolute boss adapting to everything thrown at her. I really love her heart and her character. Very well written character and an excellent performance by Nana Visitor.
One of the greats from season one
It was a fantastic episode! Thanks for subbing and taking time to comment. It means a lot! -- Jeff
I just watched this Episode on it's 30th Anniversary. I had forgotten the plotline almost completely. How is this possible that this an Episode of the 1st Season?
The whole season is the usual struggle of a new show finding its footing, something that DS9 took 4 years in the end. And then suddenly this script comes up near the end of the season and it's the most nailbiting, gripping and moving thing you can imagine, with one of the strongest performances by any guest stars ever.
This one destroyed me.
- How many Cardassian civilians did you kill?
- Look, I regret a lot of what I had to do!
- How convenient from you!!!
The episode that changed in Majors character forever
this is a fantastic showcase of what DS9 is all about. No more Roddenberry´s "no conflict" rule. This Trek is more mature and will force you to deal with heavy topics
The conflict comes from the alien (non human) interactions and human and alien interactions. I think the Roddenberry rule for non-conflict between the humans still exists because humanity by the 24th century was supposed to be passed petty bickering and differences. But that’s just the way I see it
There was conflict in classic Trek, one of my favorites is the episode with the half white half black and half black half white species that hate each other.
@@alexakaa.charlesross8919 the bo conflict ruke applied to our heroes. In TOS there was no real conflict, same in TNG. In DS9 you have people that don't get along
@@einosig But Spock and Bones didn't get along 😂
Let That Be Your Last Battlefield
Its my favorite Star Trek episode of all time. Across all classic Star Trek series TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I hope you continue to enjoy! -h
It does pack an emotional wallop that's tough to beat.
I'd put this episode up against any Trek or sci fi. My only regret is that they never mentioned Martizza or these events again. I always thought that it would have been powerful to have someone who knew him show up a few seasons later, to get Kira's perspective again.
this was a fantastic ep and a small taste of the greatness that was to come for this show.
this was also a great ep for the growth of kira. before, she saw all cardassians as guilty of crimes against her people. now she sees that not all of them were monsters. some, like maritza, wanted to help but lacked the power to do anything.
This should have won them an emmy
One of my favourite eps for sure.
greatest. episode. ever
As a strong hater of dad jokes, it surprises me to report that "Smarm-off" made me spit a little coffee. Hat's off to you. 😂🤣
We aim to please. Thank for watching! - Jeff
DS9 reactions! You got my sub. Keep it up.
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! -h
One of the best episodes in all of Trek.
This was one I asked for. Thank you.
Best episode definitely of the first season and maybe the entire series
Julian gets wit and grows up
Always been one of my faves.this episode moved me to tears so many times.the parallels with war criminals at the Nuremberg trials is chilling. "I'd send my men out to kill Bajoran scum!.. they'd return covered in blood..but they'd feel CLEAN.and why?.. because they WERE CLEAN!" Dark.fave characters Quark, Garrick, Weyun, Martok, O'Brien, Damar (the rebel)
Season two, Blood Oath is a good episode.
This episode is so damn good, and absolutely devastating when everything is revealed. I could have done without the drunk Bajoran guy, as he didn't really add anything of comparative value, but that's just a nitpick. Superb tour-de-force acting from both of the main leads!
When Maritza breaks it's a knife in the gut. (more so than the _actual_ knife there at the end, even)
I thought the drunk guy was good to have as it showed that things are not as simple as labeling the Bajorans as victims and all Cardassians as bad.
and that is character development
The video’s volume should be equal to your own.
Favourite character? Probably Garak and yes everybody says that.
Jeff looks very disappointed with the fact there wasn't at least one musical number. That title is indeed very misleading. LOL.
I’m a sucker for a show tune. - Jeff
What you call genocide I call a days work.
You much watch the film The Man in the Glass Box. This episode was highly influenced by that screen play.
I think you should have watched Progress (ep14) before this one. Another great episode, though Duet is a series standout for sure.
Are you going to keep reacting to DS9
I’ve started recording my reactions and we’ll start putting them out in the next few weeks. Thanks for watching along and checking in! -h
This is the only episode of season 1 I can even watch. DS9 season one is so BAD. I’m quite surprised DS9 wasn’t canceled after it tbh
TNG season one certainly has some cringe episodes, but if you can focus on what they were going for, they are tolerable at least. Outside off the pilot and this episode, season one is completely USELESS.
Israel has to accept the occupation.
This episode shows religions bigotry as it is
