Ds9 was WAAY ahead of its time. It's long story arcs were made for 21st century binge watching online streaming. Amazing 3 dimensional characters that genuinely evolved over the 7 seasons with phenomenonal villain characters. Just one of the best sci-fi series of all time.
NO FUCKin' WAY! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ......fucking, NOG man. fuck everything. Damn. Why wasn't this news!?! The nerd community can fuck off for not making this more public.
Should've used the full Garak quote. "And all it cost was the life of one Romulan senator, one criminal, and the self respect of one starfleet officer. I don't know about you, but I call that a bargain."
I know im randomly asking but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost my login password. I would love any help you can offer me.
The Nog storyline in "Heart of Stone" kills me every time. His speech to Sisko pleading for a letter of recommendation to Starfleet Academy is some of Aron Eisenberg's finest acting. I think Nog's arc is easily the best in the entire series.
@Zach Jersey Making me tear up thinking about it... RIP & bless you, Aron💔✌️ If only most humans were like him (still need variety, but his heart anyway😇)
Deep Space 9 is my favorite series. "In the Pale Moonlight" is one of the best, if not the best episodes of Star Trek since it really reveals so much about humanity and morality.
I agree. The material really asked viewers to reconsider/think on a position that is particularly interesting. Had the Federation and allies not dragged the Romulans in, they would have lost. Those moral quandaries is what ST is known for. I love the episode a lot. "It's a faaaaaaaaaake!"
In the Pale Moonlight not only is it my favourite episode of Star Trek. It shows doing the wrong thing is doing the right thing. Garak's actions maybe wrong and Sisko acknowledges that in his log but he also acknowledges they was right. Sisko: Garak was right about one thing. Integrity is a small price to pay for freedom...so I will learn to live with it. Because I can
Just finished DS9 today, and it made me tear up a lot. It was a beautiful and bittersweet journey. It felt like saying goodbye to good friends. I appreciate all the actors, writers, directors, and FX guys for bringing this show to life.
I'm a massive Sci-Fi TV nerd. I've watched every episode of Star Trek: Next Generation, Voyager, DS9, a lot of discovery, and every single movie. Every episode of Stargate: SG-1, Atlantis, Universe, and all the movies. All of Battlestar Galactica. Plus loads of other shows. I agree with you completely on DS9. I think it is the most realistic, humanistic, and best Sci-Fi show to ever be shown on TV. It was way ahead of its time in so many ways. Oddly, I doubt it would ever be made and shown on TV nowadays. I think Garak is one of the best characters in the entire Star Trek series.
DS9 crept up on me kinda late in the day! I tried to watch it regularly when it came on air for the 1st time but, after TNG, I simply couldn't get into it... All this 'boring' talk about war, the Cardasian Occupation and tensions in the newly formed Bajoran Government... Oh... And although I was pumped for it, those wormhole aliens didn't provide anything compelling at the time... Now... Forward a decade or two.. And someone introduces me to the Dominion War! Sisko had a bad ass ship (and a kool shaved head!) and I was sold! I've watched the entire series, back to back, at least 2, maybe 3 times! And yes, it's the Best Star Trek series by far!!! But, it's not for everybody... But, thanks to the success of DS9, we had the, at the time, seemingly compelling Babylon 5, which was in direct competition... And then of course... Perhaps the best sci fi show ever to hit television: The re-imagined Battle Star Galatica... So... We owe a LOT to this show! It definitely shock things up when it came down to 'darker' sci fi themes and this trend is only going to continue...
Not only did he play one of the best Star Trek characters, he also played one of the best Fallout characters. Mr House of Fallout is both horrible and heroic, an incredibly complicated character that had only a frozen picture as a face yet Rene used his voice to give the character so many layers. He was a great actor.
Great post...RIP Odo(Rene)...I still remember him in Benson. I agree from season 3 it took off. Season 1 and 2 though was just them getting their footing. But there were some gems in those two seasons..set precedent for the whole series(introduced the Dominion, the character dynamic, and brought in the Defiant, the 2nd one anyway, lol). DS9 is Star Trek at it's zenith for me, with proper canon and respect for what came before and blazing a new trail as a whole. It's only competition was Babylon 5.
@@ZePepper i doubt that very much if there is one show that they do not want to bring back its that one because they are affraid that it will also cause Babylon 5 to come back with captain John Sheridan and most likely Satai Delenn and we all know what will happen to the DS9 ratings again if that happens
@@guytremblay1647 and B5 coming back would be an issue because? DS9 rating suffered from a weak first season. And several crossovers with TNG kept failing to come through, so they didn't capture the audience like they could and should have.
DS9 is to modern SF TV what "The Wire" was to modern TV crime dramas. Took nearly 20yrs, but the public finally caught up to what the critics & contemporary viewers were saying all along.
When news of my own father passing came I took it calmly. I had to travel from Canada to Costa Rica to see him and return with his ashes. After 2 weeks of having to deal with Embassy's, customs and various other competing problems I finally was back at my home with some free time. I recalled this episode from my teen years and so I found it and had my wife sit and watch it with me. I was finally able to cry. Jake's pain was my own, and everything he had done in that episode resonated. It was wonderfully written, and probably the only show that can crush me.
I've been rewatching DS9 recently and viewed "The Visitor" again for the first time in maybe 20 years. When I first saw it, I was a young man, older than Jake but considerably younger than Benjamin. Now I'm older than Ben, and this episode devastated me so much I had to compose myself afterwards. It's still one of the finest episodes of any tv show I've ever seen.
@EmceeDoctorB they both had the exact same concept and plots . when one came up with a plot the other would copy it . Knowing the writers of DS9 i'm sure that they were the ones who made COPY+PASTE all the time .and yes Babilon 5 was way better even if i found it almost as borring a DS9
@EmceeDoctorB they were strill both piece of shit for a concept and one of them always copied on the other , itsd for that reason that i stopped whatching both
@@guytremblay1647 DS9 Copied B5 - B5's script and 5 year arc was written in full at time of presentation. Only the threat of canceling made JMS rework season 4 to shorten the Shadow War.
Alyssa Draculesti Love both series. I don’t thing either of them are the same. The only similar thing would be both ending up in a large war. I like B5 just a little bit better and have watched the the whole series a number of times. Like other Star Trek’s, the first season always starts out kind of bad. The first season of B5 is not the best either, but you need to watch it as future episodes link back to them.
Sisko is the best for me but Piacard is a close second and I can see why some prefer him. If it was only peace time I'd probably take Picard. If it was war time or when you're surrounded by enemies I'd easily take Sisko.
DS9 and TNG are both my favorites because they show different facets of the huge world Roddenberry created. They both live in the same universe, and have similarities but are different. And they are awesome!
Yepp. I like to think of it this way: Picard's Enterprise is the "head" and "heart" of the Federation, she represents the ideals of the Federation, with her crew being the best of the best and as the fleet's flagship that crew's very close to the most important people and events in the Federation. Deep Space Nine shows the Federation's... bowels. The characters are thrown into turmoil, things are chaotic a lot of the time, everything's makeshift and ad hoc... it's not ideal, it's not pretty... yet you can't live without your bowels, can you?
@@RR-bl2on well TNG was off the air by then, but they did have several crossover episodes that fell through earlier in the run. But I think a TNG movie dealing with the Dominion wars would have helped both series immensely.
@@ZePepper The plot of Insurrection was also based heavily around the Dominion conflict. It actually seemed a lot like a DS9 movie just because it focused so heavily on the darker sides of Starfleet.
DS9 is definitely my favourite Trek. I love TOS and TNG, and like ENT and DSC, but DS9 just takes the whole thing to a new level. Criminally underrated.
Duet was easily the best acted and written of the first season of DS 9.
5 лет назад+8
For a season 1 episode of the Trek show Duet is far above the norm. Powerful performances by Nana and Mr. Yulan. Extraordinary character development of Kira, especially the end (Spoiler alert!) after Maritza is killed she angrily asks, "Why?! He wasn't Darhe'el! Why?!" the stabber replies, "He's a Cardassian! That's reason enough." to which she replies, "No! It's not." as much to herself as to him, realizing that she cannot hate all Cardassians as they are not all bad people.
@ I agree its a very powerful episode with Nana Visitor showing what she can do with good writing and Nana Visitor herself said its her Favourite episode. Harris Yulin would have won a Emmy if it was a cotemporary show.
Ds9 was my absolute favorite. I've watched every tv series episode of each iteration of ST, all movies (and own), comics, and books. I'm a Trek fan over Star Wars. And ds9 is my favorite. I've watched the entire series, on repeat (yes, repeatedly watching all 7 seasons immediately starting over once 7 was finished), and I love this iteration of ST the most. "In The Pale Moonlight" was my favorite episode. It is the epitome of reflecting the difference of ds9 of TNG. I liked the idea that Roddenberry used ST in the 60s to show an idyllic universe to use as a mirror to real life and show how far we need to go and improve. I believe TNG also needed to continue that as in the late 80s we still had far to go. When ds9 came out, the world had "grown up" significantly since the 60s and ds9 could start to show the ST universe in a more realistic manner. Not everyone holds hands in season one. We got to see characters grow and evolve, this is especially true for Nog. That's what I didn't like about TOS and TNG. The character growth and evolution of both of those isn't as markedly noticable as it is in ds9, even Worf grew more in 3 seasons of ds9 than the character ever did in all of TNG. I love this series. And now I'm gonna watch "In the pale moonlight" after which start the whole thing over again
good points about character development. DS9 used to be my least favorite series, i grew up watching it and TNG & Voyager, now i appreciate DS9 as much as the others of its era. Enterprise was where everything went down hill, and i attribute it to a trnasition from "stage acting" to a more modern TV format.
I spent almost 15 years not watching Voyager or DS9 because I was such a devout TNG purist, that I just didn't think I could get into another crew. No Data, no Picard. Then I finally watched DS9 and I was blown away. Voyager is also great, but DS9 may be my favorite now. There are too many amazing episodes to talk about, but the last 10 episodes of the series were something special. I just wish Jadziah had been around for the last season. Don't get me wrong Ezri is great, and she's very cute in a pixie kind of way, but you can't replace a woman like Terry Farrell. Great video.
Honestly, as a fan of Babylon 5 I never thought I would find an equal show and every time I remember Bashir, O' Brian, Jadzia, Kira , Garak Weyoun , Quark, I am like hell yeah they are like my friends and I know I'll rewatch again
Only saw a few TOS episodes as a kid, and really started watching star trek with TNG. I loved TNG. And then DS9 came. All older star trek shows are great, but DS9 to me is my favorite star trek series. The ending of "in the pale moonlight" still sends shivers down my spine. TNG showed us a mature federation and it's ideals at it's best. DS9 showed us the federation and what happens when it's principles cause conflict, and what happens when the federation comes under serious threat. TNG was a showcase of the federations principles, DS9 was a test of those principles...
@@pigpiggypigbigpig681 Thanks! But i'm pretty sure what i said in't fully original... Someone somewhere on youtube probably already said it and i just remembered it... ;) That's what i like about older star trek. It made you think, and every time you rewatch the show, you discover new things. Or some episode makes you think about current events, or about something that happened this week. Or it just simply gives you a moral dilemma to ponder (again). And this is what i sorely miss in STD. It is just so dumbed down, STD blatantly preaches instead of making you think, and often the moral lessons shown in STD are dubious at best, and sometimes even just morally wrong. The short trek "the trouble with edward" being a prime example: Someone difficult to work with? Just ignore them, try and ship them off, and if something goes wrong, don't even try and help them even if you are the captain responsible for this man... It is just morally wrong and not star trek at all. AND it is diametrically opposed to how for example barcley was handled in TNG! Barclay was included in the crew, picard ordered the crew to look for sollutions and ordered them to work with him. And in the end he became a valuable member of the crew. In STD a difficult personality is ignored and eventually left to die.
Johan Wittens Yeah I saw a video on that very subject about the new ST. I’ll watch the 300+ hours of DS9 and Voyager instead. STNG stands out in sci-fi in a brilliant way in that it wasn’t dystopian. Almost ALL the rest of sci-fi is dystopian to the point that it feels lazy. I thought DS9 was doing the same thing, taking the easy route. So much drama comes from war and conflict that it’s actually easy to draw the audience in (especially the shallow ones). What you said above made me see it in a new light. What if all the standards I love about ST is put to a logical and fair challenge? I love that idea. The show is pretty corny sometimes but I think it’s worth diving into.
@@pigpiggypigbigpig681 dystopian can be great, but it is a common trope yes. That's what attracted me in TNG too, this idea that if people worked together, humanity could be so much more and could achieve so much. TNG is a world I wanted to live in as a kid and teen. I love the expanse too though. That to me isn't so much dystopian, but more of a gritty realistic look at what our future in space might look like...
Yes, that's a very good point. Even Gene Roddenberry wanted to predict a true Utopia society for humanity, which basically is happening in Star Trek, in all of them, but it is never said that all alien races are alike and that it would be a natural thing for the Federation to get enemies. Alien species who simply don't like the Federation or where it stands for, or see it as a price to get, or simply just another target to obtain (for example by the Borg). So this leads to conflict and DS9 reflects in very well way how Utopia deals with Conflict. It's not even far from the real world. You and me, who are watching this video right now, we are 'wonderful people' as long our electricity is working, we have food in the fridge, we have clear drinking water and peace around us. Take all that away, and what would we be like? That statement of Quark was 100% true, the only little flaw in his statement was that actually this situation counts for most civilized species, not only to humans.
Nolan Burkhart The last two years of GOT sucked because they ran out of written material after season 5. Season 6 was surprisingly good given they were out of books, not to mention them doing a mangle job the whole way through on certain plots and cutting of characters the whole show when compared to the books.
Yeah the last two seasons sucked for GoT but you can’t say it wasn’t incredible for the most part. I just watched half of Season 1 of Deep Space Nine and... jesus fucking Christ it can be corny sometimes lol I mean BAAAAAD corny. I’m enjoying it so far but the fact that fans overlook these facts without any mention is a red flag to their tastes for me.
@@pigpiggypigbigpig681 I think they get overlooked because 1. Star trek shows generally aren't serialized and 2 it's kind of expected to have a corny episode lol
@@pigpiggypigbigpig681 I think there's a general rule that the first season of any Star Trek series will be bland or silly. I wasn't able to go past season one in TNG
DS9 is my favorite... Captain Sisko seems like a modern attack submarine captain...Picard is more like an 18th or 19th century British Captain on a ship of the line...
Sisko also put his moral compass ahead of Federation dogma all the time, which I appreciated. I do believe he'd outright shot at the Enterprise rather than stand by and watch a bunch of people be wiped out by a planetary event.
Picard was the captain of the flagship of the Federation and unlike Sisko had to give a lot of attention to Federation laws (Sisko was technically loaned out to the Bajorans ) and policies.
@@paristeta5483 It was an Introduction to Criminal Law. The student reactions varies year by year , but many find it interesting . A test on morality is done before the episode is shown as I wanted to test if they are of good character or not. In the end, the episode has a lot of teachable moments for them in regards to the study of criminal law. Many share their stories but the overriding theme they all acknowledge is that the "Road to hell was always paved with good intentions" This is a Juvenile corrections high school BTW.
Until the final season of GoT, I told everyone that I talked with about television that it was the best show ever. I can now say that DS9 is the best show ever.
@@stipe3124 It says something that when GoT was early on, I commented that Varys was absolutely like Garak, and that the two were such a similar mold they'd probably get along fine, lol. Season 8 Varys reminded me less of Garak and more of a moron. (I feel bad for the actor, I know he agrees with the last part of that sentiment..) I still think if GRR Martin is at all a Trek fan (and I would not be surprised) if Garak didn't actually influence Varys a bit. They have a lot in common in both motivation and behavior.
I originally watched "The Visitor" with my two best blokey mates in a darkened room on a winter's night. As the episode progressed ... I started to sob. I attempted to sob quietly, so my mates didn't hear me. It was the 1990's and a grown man didn't want to appear soft to his best manly friends! It was only after that magnificent episode ended, and the lights were turned on that it become apparent that all three of us blokey blokes had been crying silently through-out the episode. It is a must watch!
Another phenomenal episode is Season 1's "Duet." It's one of the first times you really get to see the world-building affect the characters in a lasting and meaningful way.
I agree with your video and I appreciate it, but it is criminal that you didn't once mention "Duet" with Kira. That episode had me bawling like a little girl at the end.
I also really loved the episode about the Cardassian Maritza pretending to be Gul Darheel. That scene where he falls apart in the cell talking to Kira makes me cry every time.
I agree, DS9 was the pinnacle of Star Trek. In a way I believe it "completed" the Star Trek storyline. It all seemed to lead up to DS9 and conclude there, somehow. Which is why I believe to appreciate DS9 you've got to watch at least TNG and probably TOS as well, plus Star Trek 6. You've got to know where Star Trek came from to understand how it ends. At least that's how it feels to me.
I have found my tribe here. I have watched DS9 every night for years. It is my favourite show. It's so nice to read the comments of so many people who agree with me even if nobody else in my life does
I know people always bring it up, but season one's "Duet" is such a beautiful episode. Superb acting, both main cast and guest stars, amazing writing. If any episode shows how this series is both different from other Treks and still pure Star Trek, its this one.
Literally one second into the video I decided I had to comment on those years. About another second later I figured someone had already certainly done so, but I’d check nonetheless. Yours, doing so, was the first comment I saw. The universe does not disappoint.
Always happy to see DS9 get some love. The episode where Jake tries to get the baseball card for his dad always makes me smile. The timing of the episode was great, too. A little emotional break from the darker episodes around it. One of my favorite shows ever.
"Hard Time!" The tail end of that episode I jumped out of my chair and was talking to the tv, O'Brien don't do it man! Then Bashir is there to handle the situation. I'm glad someone was there because I would've been devastated if O'Brien pressed that button.
Thankyou for making this. TNG and DS9 are thought provoking and I will take them with me forever. But DS9 is what truly solidified my love for star trek. Great video
Tony Todd's Kurn in the Episode Sons of Mogh was also utterly heartbreaking. Todd is one of the finest recurring actors of the entire Star Trek franchise!
I have such fond memories of watching Deep Space Nine as a boy growing up in the 90's. I love Star Trek but DS9 always had a special place for me. I think Gene Roddenberry would have been supportive of DS9 - he was in the Navy in WW2 and even if he hoped for a peaceful future i don't think he was a pacifist or saw the world in black and white. DS9's greatest strengths are not only its serialised story telling but also its ensemble cast. Some of the greatest characters are only recurring - such as Garak, Dukat and Damar.
I don't know about that. Maybe the Roddenberry that created the Original Series would have liked it, but by the time of TNG he seemed very controlling. He bought his own hype about being the visionary of a utopian future and developed a lot of very specific ideas about what did and didn't belong in Trek. I can't imagine the same Roddenberry who said that Federation officers wouldn't even argue with each other being able to sign off on an episode where a Starfleet captain has several people assassinated. Maybe if he saw the whole arc of where the series was going. But if he was alive during its production I bet he would have protested a lot.
DS9: Masterfully-written, characters that are not b/w and grow over time, outstanding performance-And unrecognized, overlooked. I think DS9 was way ahead of its time and that’s why it shines now, 25+ years later. If produced today, it would certainly win many awards ... and more.
If TNG and DS9 were produced today, they would not last beyond first (TNG) or second (DS9) season - just like SG:U. Today's audience is more in line for late Andromeda episodes ( frist two seasons of Andromeda, writtten by MIchael Hewitt Wolfe were AMAZING).
@@piotrd.4850 I disagree in part. TNG would not survive, too happy-perfect-boring. DS9 with its story arches and well-written characters (writing is not perfect but close to literary writing) would thrive in Netflix and streaming services. They delve very well current topics (religion, politics, corruption, gender fluidity, fear of the other). DS9 has a growing fan crowd among milennials and Gen Y.
Great analysis. I'm a huge Trek nerd and when I met my partner I started introducing them to it as well. We started with TNG, then watched VOY, because I wanted to save the best till last. 3 years and change into our relationship, they're a huge Trekkie too and we just finished watching the S4 premiere "Way of the Warrior". My partner says DS:9 feels like trek but also feels like a completely different franchise from the stuff we've watched so far. And we're just getting started with the good stuff.
DS9 became my favorite as an adult. I grew up watching TNG through Enterprise. I had the "Way of the Warrior" parts one and two recorded on VHS, and watched Worf's entry into DS9 probably a 100 times. I always said, Star Trek is the way it should be, Star Wars is the way it would be. I think all of the series are masterpieces in their own right, but DS9 is like Pink Floyd's DSM...the best of the masterpieces.
Yes!!! Thanks so much for this! "The Visitor" kills me, I cry like a baby every single time. DS9 is my favourite Star Trek series, though I love them all!
By far my favorite Star Trek series. I'm rewatchimg the whole series now. That's what brought me here. Odo was hands down my favorite character. Major Kira was my crush.
I didn't really care for it although I wouldn't argue about "best". What do you guys like about it so much? I think I sorta disliked the angle of approaching the episode from Sisko's personal log recording. It felt a bit heavy-handed to me although it did give insight into the way Sisko's mind worked (which I always thought was kinda lacking in DS9 compared to, say, Picard's inner conflicts in TNG). Yet I think I would have preferred it if it wasn't told in the format so that we might even start really questioning Sisko's actions more and maybe even have periods where we question if he's actually a decent man or a villain. The personal log format made it too easy to empathize with his actions and thought processes the entire way IMO and kind of spoiled the moral dilemma to me right from the beginning. You know, like show vs. tell. The episode felt more like "telling" to me than "showing".
My favorite aspect of DS9 is how we got to see the Federation viewed from the eyes of aliens who aren't apart of their actual organization. From their allies like the Bajorans and Klingons, to neutral, morally grey characters like Quark and Garak, to full on enemies like Dukat and the Dominion. This perspective helped widen our view of the Federation, in how they are ultimately good, but are as flawed as any other power. They cut freedoms when infiltrated by changelings, would not support the Maquis, and the revelation of Section 31's existence completely changed our notions of how noble Starfleet really is. All of this led to more interesting and nuanced storytelling from the DS9 team.
There's a marvelous scene between Quark (the bartender) and Elim Garak (the... simple tailor) where Quark explains to Garak how he thinks the Federation operates by using root beer as an example.
"Never underestimate the Federation's technical skill" I don't know why but that line from Dukat always stuck with me even though it's so mundane. The Dominion started out categorically superior to them technologically but then the Starfleet Engineers got to work and the Founders had to call in the Breen just to keep up.
DS9 also showed that the Federation was the cleanest shirt in the room: the Romulans were conniving and militaristic, the Klingons were a corrupt society wanting war and glory, the Cardassians had an oppressive society and imperialistic mindset, the Breen were ruthless, the Ferengi were greedy and underhanded, while the Dominion were the tyrants of the Gamma Quadrant and perhaps as bad as the Borg. So yeah the Federation had some dubious elements to it: playing politics with allies and adversaries to keep the peace, Section 31's activities to covertly neutralize threats and a covertly sanctioned genocide of the Founders who quite frankly had it coming with their totalitarian, genocidal methods.
My brother showed me "Duet" as my first taste of DS9. My jaw DROPPED at that ending. That's when I knew, this was gonna be different than TNG. Not in a way that rejects it, but in a way that embraces and elevates everything it represented.
Mr. Avery Brooks's delivery of the dialog was passionate and gave more credence to the character. There was no doubt that he was always the leader of this group and everyone. He was such a prominent person he even provoked"Q". Every aspect oh this character was incredible from his skill as an engineer, his leadership, management, negotiation ability, as well as his cleverness and bravery in battle, all while still showing his love and compassion of his family and crew. WELL DONE!!! I also liked Nana Visitor as Major Kira. She too was extremely believable and formidable. Odo was a favorite character of mine and his unknown origin to the revelation of dominion was incredible. Also, a great character developed-longterm-storyline delivered brilliantly by Mr. Rene' Auberjonois. All of the challenges and twists and extraordinary interesting and thought-provoking were extremely edifying for me making this series, by far, my favorite!
There are so many good episodes, but I think my favourite two episodes are "The Visitor" and "In the Pale Moonlight". I've seen both a dozen times. They're both fantastic for completely different reasons.
I know it's been a couple of years since this has been posted. But it's my first time seeing it. Excellent. DS9 has been and always be my favorite Star Trek ever
Glad to find someone that shares my opinion. I always felt DS9 was the best series in Star Trek. I've just starting to watching again, and was hoping that it is as good as I remember it. Your video encourages me that it will be.
Deep Space Nine is my absolute favorite Star Trek Show..PERIOD..It was and still is just plain awesome..When it comes to Discovery..I absolutely hate it..I watched the first season and thought it so so. Then came the second season. I gave it a chance and hoped it would get better. Then they brought in Section 31 who were established on DS9. They were a deep cover organization that no one had heard of. When they bring them to Discovery, everyone knows all about them and I was like..WHAT!!!!???? That's when I said, oh hell no!!!! I will never watch another episode of that crap again. I also have no faith at all with future Trek shows coming, including the Picard show. I'll give it a chance, but I'm not hopeful. If I want to watch great Trek, I will always go to what came before, especially DS9. Great review, thank you. And just have to say, rest in peace Aron Eisenberg. I still can't believe he's gone.
If I'm not mistaken, Section 31 played a part in Enterprise. And why wouldn't it? DS9 established Section 31 dated back all the way to the beginning of the Federation. It only makes sense that a shady organization would get more secretive and "lost to time" as time goes by.
I started watching startrek in 2017 for my new job where we were making a startrek mobile game. part of my job was to watch startrek and familiarize myself with it. I watched all the series and movies over the course of a year and i loved it. So i like to consider myself a bit unbias as i don't have that nostalgic favorite. DS9 is hands down my favorite and the episode "The Visitor" was beautiful.
@J Jackson Agree, I would say, Encounter at Far Point and Caretaker are both very weak to. Tonally though the episode set you up that DS9 was not another TNG......
René Murat Auberjonois was an American actor and singer best known for playing Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. In films, Auberjonois portrayed Father Mulcahy in MASH, the expedition scientist Roy Bagley in King Kong, and Chef Louis in The Little Mermaid, in which he sang "Les Poissons". ~Wikipedia RIP Odo. Born: June 1, 1940, New York, NY Died: December 8, 2019, Los Angeles, CA
I read of Rene's passing moments after it was announced. Truly heartbreaking. He was dealing with cancer, the nasty bitch she is. He hung in well. I honestly had no idea he was 79 years old. Truly a beautiful soul.
I am actually binging on DS9 on Netflix and currently on Season 6. Agree, it gets better as the story progresses. I've got to admit, the Ferengi characters are fun to watch.
You won't be disappointed. It gets better as the show progresses. It isn't without it's issues, like the religious concepts. However, watching the characters desperation and the battle sequences more than make up for it.
@@miconis123 I'm still holding judgement on Discovery as it's not finished yet. Season 3 and Picard series are around the corner and Picard series COULD suck more. Wait and see.
DS9 is absolutely the best trek and every single character in the series is fully fleshed out but still nothing moves me more than a good Captain Picard episode.
For me it is TNG and then DS9, but they are close, i liked the humor they added with the Ferengi, Quark was on another level, he was so so funny not in a silly ridiculous way that would hurt the series, but in a clever way, even in the most intense episodes they could insert the magic touch of Quark. Garek episodes were excellent, even after episodes where he seems to side with the station you couldn't trust him, the writing of Garek was sublime, and i liked the cruel suspicious Cardasians. I didn't like Voyager i watched few episodes but couldn't continue, Enterprise was good but not at the level of TNG and DS9, Discovery is not bad, it is better than Enterprise but lesser than TNG and DS9.
perhaps its just nostalgia, as its the show i grew up with. but even though the writing, characters and effects of ds9 are generally superior. nothing quite puts me in comfort mode and soothes my spiritual aches and pains like watching geordi and data work through a problem. they genuinely feel like my family who i have complete faith in and have no desire to see come to harm
@@drsomeone1 TNG wasn't the best with WRITING in the first season. As much as I love TNG, much of the first season writing was rehashed storylines already told in TOS. "Encounter at Farpoint Station" is my least favorite episode & best exemplifies this.
Most people entered the trek universe with TOS or TNG but DS9 is what got me into the franchise and will always hold a special place in my heart as one of my favorite science fiction shows and my favorite Star Trek show
Great Video. This was my favorite Star Trek series, by far. Having grown up with TNG, I was really tired of the "Monster of the Week" format that TNG and other Sci-Fi shows had fallen into. The story and character arcs really set it apart from other shows of it's era. The acting (especially Avery Brooks) was superb and it was nominated for Emmy Awards for every season it produced episodes. When I watch any new Sci-Fi or fantasy themed shows I always end up comparing aspects of it to DS9 to predict if it has the capacity to be a good or watchable series. The re-imagined Battlestar Galactica and DS9 are the two best series to showcase the potential of a "Space Opera" science fiction show. I recommend them to anyone who is looking for suggestions on getting into the genre.
I am right there with you. TNG felt almost like a Saturday Morning Cartoon. An episode had a beginning, middle and end with a lesson. Everything (besides the two parts) finished up with a bow on top. So, to go to DS9 where you had season long story arcs, actually challenges to characters and these huge, galaxy sizes arcs was so refreshing and pretty neat. I will admit, the show is FAR from perfect. The first two seasons are a bit slow (with some gems) and the religion aspects in the show didn't always work for me.
@@NaterTot Keep in mind what was going on in the world when the series came out. The religious aspect along with the Bajoran/Cardassian conflict is a direct allegory of the Israel/Palestine conflict. Not everyone's cup of tea but it isn't the first time Star Trek used real world issues in storytelling.
Thank you for making this. As a big Trek fan I totally agree that this is the best Star Trek has to offer. I can rewatch this series over and over again and I have. I would argue that seeing a starfleet crew go through a war was needed for star trek. In TOS and TNG, they talked of past wars or narrowly avoided others. We see some consequences of war in those series but not the war itself. Starfleet officers are supposed to have an extremely true moral compass. While even in TOS and TNG we see officers gone bad, we don't often see them wrestling with "the finer points of morality" in a kobyashi maru scenario. Putting the characters, some of which try to be as ethical as possible while others are opportunistic, go through this large event and to see their thought processes, decisions, consequences, successes and failures is so thought provoking. On top of that, the overarching story lines are interesting in and of themselves. I wish that we could have seen this creative team work on a sequel series that takes place at some point after DS9 ended. New characters or old, they could take the history they have written through this series and build upon it to grow the universe even further. Live long and prosper to all those involved in DS9, and Star Trek as a whole.
Although you showed a scene from the former at 12:10, you didn't touch another pair of great episodes: _The Siege of AR-558_ and it's follow-up 2 episodes later, _It's Only a Paper Moon._ Instead of showing large space battles, the former shows the brutality of close-quarters ground combat, whilst the latter deals with PTSD resulting from serious injuries suffered during battle.
I believe that Star Trek: Voyager series was a meld of both Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: DS9, which combined the exploration aspect of TNG, and the DS9 seasonal arc storytelling and the ongoing war aspect with the Borg (DS9 was the war with the Dominion). All three of the series mentioned are in my mind the best Star Trek shows ever made. Never truly watched the OG series, and did not finish the Enterprise series. Still haven't watched the new CBS All Access series Discovery yet.
Imo voyager wasn't bad, it just had some bad writing here/there and some poorly written characters. Still enjoyable, and had great episodes, but not as good as ds9.
Oh also later enterprise seasons (before it was cancelled) are actually pretty great. Earlier seasons aren't quite as good, but there are some outliers. Most season 4 episodes are very well written and def worth a watch. Also please just skip the last episode. It's an embarrasment and you'd be better off without even knowing the plot.
Original is just that. The original. I love it. Enterprise was good too imo. T'Pol was hot, I liked Tripp, Flox, Captain Archer. Will revisit that after I am done with my binge of TNG and DS9
Ds9 is my favorite series, I know there is hardcore trekies that disagree, startrek first gen is more about united nations, while ds9 is about the wild west
The thing I like about DS9 is that almost all the characters start out cynical or broken. The series is punctuated with adversity, it is often those character flaws that make them best suited for the job of overcoming those challenges. Gradually in surmounting their traumatic pasts they become a more integrated and coherent group. Forging a better world in the crucible of conflict and loss as it were.
Deep Space Nine is really good. It has classic character driven conflict. One of my favorite episodes is Tacking Into The Wind. Kira is dealing with helping with the Cardassian rebellion. She needs to make sure Damar stays on track after he finds out that his family has been murdered while dealing with her conflict with Rusot. Garrak plays a great role as the pragmatist. Gowron stirs things up in a personal grab for glory while also attempting to personally humiliate General Martok. Sisco turns to Worf in an effort to address this. There is so much in this one episode and it is all driven directly from clear character motivations! This is true even when Worf declines to become chancellor - He knows he can't be chancellor because of his background! A lot of good stuff in just one episode and it's not a muddled mess or soap opera! A really good job done in this episode!
To be fair TNG did have certain story-threads that needed to be seen in order, like the Borg or Lore (as in Data's brother) episodes, but those were few and far between. Certainly nothing even approaching DS9's story threads. I too think that DS9 is the best of all the Star Trek series... in no small part thanks to all the stuff in which it was.... inspired by Babylon 5. Speaking of Babylon 5, I think that would be a good candidate for Lost and Found as well in it's own right.
yes, Babylon 5 would be great to see. I think it may be the most underrated Scifi Show of the last 30 years (and I consider DS9 my favorite tv show ever).
I remember vividly that many critics and fans did not like this iteration of Stat Trek. I argued fiercely with brothers and cousins about the viability of DS9 and am glad that I have been proven historically correct. Excellent narration and explanation, I am very respectful of the logic that the channel creator applies to this subject.
Ds9 was WAAY ahead of its time.
It's long story arcs were made for 21st century binge watching online streaming.
Amazing 3 dimensional characters that genuinely evolved over the 7 seasons with phenomenonal villain characters. Just one of the best sci-fi series of all time.
Which was just a concept stolen from the way better Babylon 5. DS9 wouldn't exist if they hadn't stolen the idea from Babylon 5.

The Nog storyline in "Heart of Stone" kills me every time. His speech to Sisko pleading for a letter of recommendation to Starfleet Academy is some of Aron Eisenberg's finest acting. I think Nog's arc is easily the best in the entire series.

Nog losing his leg and the trauma he had after it was so realistic. The actor even received kudos from veterans cause it was great.

Nog had a great character arc and was performed with charm and warmth.
Yup. That scene was epic. Sisko was challenging Nog to show he was serious and Nog delivered. That was Eisenberg’s Shakespearean moment.
TOS and TNG showed us Gene's optimistic future. DS9 showed us why it is worth fighting for.
Bro...That is a great quote.
@@NaterTot and “For the uniform” is another great episode. the passion behind Sisko’s line “You betrayed your uniform!” Is one my favorites.
DS9 is only based on Star Trek.
I completely agree. Enough said.
Garak is an amazing character study
Add “The Expanse” to your video catalog you won’t regret it

Babylon 5 is a glaring omission in your list of bonafides

The night _”The Visitor”_ aired, my best friend called me the second it was over, we were both useless puddles 😢
My best friend and I always talked about the latest DS9 the day after in school. Good times.

DS9 and TNG are both my favorites because they show different facets of the huge world Roddenberry created. They both live in the same universe, and have similarities but are different. And they are awesome!
Yepp. I like to think of it this way:
Picard's Enterprise is the "head" and "heart" of the Federation, she represents the ideals of the Federation, with her crew being the best of the best and as the fleet's flagship that crew's very close to the most important people and events in the Federation.
Deep Space Nine shows the Federation's... bowels. The characters are thrown into turmoil, things are chaotic a lot of the time, everything's makeshift and ad hoc... it's not ideal, it's not pretty...
yet you can't live without your bowels, can you?
They should have done another crossover for one of the Dominion conflicts. It would have be magnificent. A tale worthy of song.

Duet was easily the best acted and written of the first season of DS 9.
DS9 had realistic character arcs. The science fiction was truly well written. And the acting was superb.
Deep space nine was terrible boring space station and they had to fit the sjw female narrative
good points about character development.

Someone somewhere on youtube probably already said it and i just remembered it... ;)
That's what i like about older star trek.
"In the Pale Moonlight" is also a great Garak episode and shows just what he could do. Avery Brooks chewing the scenery is always awesome.
I agree my friend, and even seeing just those few shots of The Visitor is making me cry like a baby all over again. Simply brilliant.
DS9 ended up being way better than Game of Thrones, since Got sucked the last year or three.
Nolan Burkhart The last two years of GOT sucked because they ran out of written material after season 5. @@prdubi thank you for sharing !
I applaud you sir. Well done.
I cried like a baby the first time I watched The Visitor
You and I both!
Just seeing those few pieces from the episode made me cry all over again.
I’m so glad DS9 is finally getting the recognition it truly deserves. As trek fans age and revisit the series they’re seeing it for the gem that it is
Until the final season of GoT, I told everyone that I talked with about television that it was the best show ever. I can now say that DS9 is the best show ever.
Breaking Bad called, it wants a shot at the title
Got had a disaser last season DS9 had a perfect last season and also was much smarter show in general
@@stipe3124 It says something that when GoT was early on, I commented that Varys was absolutely like Garak, and that the two were such a similar mold they'd probably get along fine, lol. Season 8 Varys reminded me less of Garak and more of a moron. (I feel bad for the actor, I know he agrees with the last part of that sentiment..)
I still think if GRR Martin is at all a Trek fan (and I would not be surprised) if Garak didn't actually influence Varys a bit. They have a lot in common in both motivation and behavior.
BlazingOwnager beat me to it.
DS9 has nothing to do with the realities of space. AT ALL!
The visitor killed me. I was an emotional mess after viewing it.
Brandon: possibly the best episode of the series.
@@harvey1965 it's such raw, visceral, emotion everyone can relate to. I well up reading the synopsis. A lifelong obsession of finding his father
I'm not an emotional person, but it made me cry.
Only TV show episode to make me burst out in man tears! I was so invested in that episode!
Dude, I watch all of star trek with my father and when we saw "The visitor" I straight up cried. shit hit my in the heart like an atom bomb!
Likewise!!!
the duet is my favorite episode still to this day
DS9 is the best Star trek series period. In the Pale moonlight was an absolute classic episode. You did a great job with this video.
I also really loved the episode about the Cardassian Maritza pretending to be Gul Darheel. That scene where he falls apart in the cell talking to Kira makes me cry every time.
@@Bellthorian that episode was Duet. You're right. Both he and Nana Visitor were outstanding in it.
@@gmajor1273 I just got done watching Looking for Par'mac in all the wrong places. Another of my favorite episodes.
It's so nice to read the comments of so many people who agree with me even if nobody else in my life does
Agreed! Feel welcomed! Hope you check out some of my other videos and consider subscribing!
I know people always bring it up, but season one's "Duet" is such a beautiful episode. Superb acting, both main cast and guest stars, amazing writing. If any episode shows how this series is both different from other Treks and still pure Star Trek, its this one.
In Memory of Aron Eisenberg
196-2019
That’s a looooooooong time to live.
(I know I made a terrible joke but I couldn’t resist)
Literally one second into the video I decided I had to comment on those years. About another second later I figured someone had already certainly done so, but I’d check nonetheless. Yours, doing so, was the first comment I saw. The universe does not disappoint.
Crazy how he'd barely even aged...
He was the same age as me, but Nog was younger than me.
He would have thought it was funny
He was 1,823 yrs old. What was his secret?
Always happy to see DS9 get some love. The episode where Jake tries to get the baseball card for his dad always makes me smile. The timing of the episode was great, too. A little emotional break from the darker episodes around it. One of my favorite shows ever.
"The Siege of AR-558", "It's Only a Paper Moon", "Hard Time" TRY NO CRY DUDE
"Hard Time!" The tail end of that episode I jumped out of my chair and was talking to the tv, O'Brien don't do it man! Then Bashir is there to handle the situation. I'm glad someone was there because I would've been devastated if O'Brien pressed that button.
Thankyou for making this. TNG and DS9 are thought provoking and I will take them with me forever. But DS9 is what truly solidified my love for star trek. Great video
Oh man, just those clips of Tony Todd as Jake started me weeping. That really is an amazing episode.
Tony Todd's Kurn in the Episode Sons of Mogh was also utterly heartbreaking. Todd is one of the finest recurring actors of the entire Star Trek franchise!
DS9 has always been my favorite.
The "In Memory of Aron Eisenberg" alone got you a like from me
R.I.P. Nog! until we meet again in the Divine Treasury, buddy
That ensemble cast and recurring characters were incredible, matched only by the MCU.
Yes! I love all the Cardassians (for different reasons).
DS9 is by far the best Star Trek series ever, and still underrated and overlooked.
Been on a general Trek binge lately, and this came up in my feed today. Really great first impression of your channel
The Visitor is such an INCREDIBLE episode.
"In the Pale moonlight" Classic.........HIGHLY UNDER RATED if your any kinda star trek fan you gotta this seasons 1-7 it wont disapoint
My favourite DS9 episode. The manipulation, spying, intricacy, it's every character present's deepest moment.
Wonderful work, i have nothing to add! Thank you!
Deep Space Nine was some of the best television ever made, hands down, bar none, point blank. Period.
Just finished binging the entire show for the 2nd time, resting for a 3rd go...I love it!
I've watched over 10 times. The more I watch, the more I understand, and the more I want to watch.
You could say any character in DS9 is your favorite and have an argument. Minus one character 🤣
"In the Pale Moonlight" is one of the best Star Trek episodes ever.
Prove me wrong.
I agree. It's beautiful!
Rather criminally, "Trials and Tribble-ations" is ranked higher on imdb...
I was tearing up just watching the little snippets of "The Visitor". I cry everytime
In The Pale Moonlight is the best episode of any Star Trek show ever, in my opinion.
One 9fbmy favorite episodes is when they did a crossover withTOS trouble with tribbles. Funny as hell and raised many questions about klingons.
Yeah Picard show is garbage. Don't waste your time
Garak was my absolute favorite! I just love everything about him, good and bad.
Agreed - undoubtedly the most interesting and nuanced shade-of-grey character in all of Trek
Garak is Star Trek's T-1000 - ingenious creation to point of overdoing it.
Everything is true especially the lies
Albert Agibinik the truth is just an excuse for a poor imagination.
Some of us knew this was the BEST Star Trek series right after 'What you leave behind' ended. There hasn't been anything better since!
I'm really glad I came across this...Good job!
great review, while most people say "in the pale moonlight" is the best, my personal favourite episode has to be "far beyond the stars"
Avery Brooks is the best captain in the Star Trek Universe
Agreed, he was willing to what was necessary.
@@SirDankleberry so were others...
Yeah he was a badass but also was flawed like dragging the Romulans into a war on a lie
Pimphand
He was kind of neutered in the first couple seasons, but once S3 hit, we were like "They finally let him play as "Hawk" (from Spencer for Hire)" LOL
I knew DS9 was special when I watched the first episode and it just got better from there.
I love Paradise, excellent episode very "The Village"
@J Jackson Agree, I would say, Encounter at Far Point and Caretaker are both very weak to.
Tonally though the episode set you up that DS9 was not another TNG......
Anyone who talked about DS9 being amazing is a friend of mine!
~Wikipedia
RIP Odo.
Born: June 1, 1940, New York, NY
Died: December 8, 2019, Los Angeles, CA
Except for Discovery, I've watched every Trek series in full but DS9 is the only one I rewatch
@@miconis123 I'm right there with you. I do rewatch TNG but particular episodes, rarely the actual full seasons
@Nick Murphy I have this episode in my personal top 10 episodes of DS9. Its so dark, I'm thinking 'Is this really Star Trek?'
@@drsomeone1 Voyager isn't as bad as many say. It does have some issues, but overall a great series. You should give it a second try.
@@kormosmate2 Perhaps i will watch, i mean even TNG which is my favorite wasn't the best with special effects in the first season.
@@drsomeone1 TNG wasn't the best with WRITING in the first season. As much as I love TNG, much of the first season writing was rehashed storylines already told in TOS. "Encounter at Farpoint Station" is my least favorite episode & best exemplifies this.
Holy shit, Aron Eisenberg lived to be 1,823 years old?
If only
Excellent analysis of the series. Your opinion of the episode The Visitor was spot on.
Love DS9! Great breakdown. Subscribed👍
Much love! Thank you so much!
DS9 will always be my favorite ST series. We need CBS to do a proper HD remaster of this show. I will by those Blu-Rays on day one.
I agree , of all Star Trek , ds9 is the finest .
I just finished the entire series in 2020, it aged like fine Wine! Star Trek and Television at it’s finest!
Amen, Alexander! Fine wine is a great analogy! :)
Another great episode: season 1 episode "Duet."
I never could get enough of DS9 when it was originally in syndication. I plan on getting the whole series for my own personal collection.
