The best character is Morn, such a deeply complex and multidimention character and his speeches, God! His character is other level.
You have not experienced Morns speeches until you have heard them in the original Klingon
That guy never shuts up !
True...but tells too many long rambling stories.
@@hollieliles1601 My favorite way to refer to the Klingon language is the way that the Klingon trouble maker said it in "Trouble With Tribbles." He referred to it as "Klingonee."
His accent was a bit inconsistent from season to season. It was quite jarring whenever he spoke.
Weyoun being so far down on the list feels like a crime.
It does. It's also a crime that ex-Liquidator Brunt didn't even get a passing mention.
Agreed. I posted similar before I saw your comment. Combs is a Trek Treasure!
@@30somethingmanchild Seconded. Combs is so versatile. I love him as Brunt.
It is. A shameful one at that.
Perhaps he is so low on the list because he manipulated Sean into that position, biding his time a mere ambassador... I see what you did the there...
I still don't trust him
That Grand Nagus Zek did not make the list is, well, INCONCEIVABLE!
This is a crime. It has to be an oversight.
One of the classic blunders
I just saw that episode for the first time yesterday. I immediately wondered if he had any iocaine.
Bahahah! I see whatcha did there, and I love it!
He's busy starting a land war in Asia
Quark is the best. Argued logic with a vulcan, argued greed with the wormhole aliens. He out-honored a klingon.
Well it's not hard to out honor a Klingon that has none.
The Quark/Odo dynamic is simply the best stuff in Trek.
Kira/Dukat is a close second
"That man loves me. Couldn't you see it? It was written all over his back."
Bashir and O’Brien leave the chat*
Garak’s position in this ranking just feels SO RIGHT.
Absolutely!
Best character in whole star trek to me. And i miss Brunt FCA on this list.
@@humr2346 Brunt, while awesome, wasn't a major character, but rather a well-developed side character.
@@TheWyldehart Same as Zyal or Bareil.
Yep... At 4, I was thinking it'd be 3) Garak, 2) and 1) Sisko / Kira in either position. That Garak is no 1 is just so cool.
Sisko’s dad being higher than weyoun is… very strange.
cough cough representation even though both Jake and Sisko are good characters.
Cassidy higher than Weyoun and Martok among a few others is just bewildering.
@@TheProteanGeek martok, sisko, weyoun, jadsea, and quark are the best
oh and odo
@@TheProteanGeek whole lineup order is BS
It goes to show how good DS9 is when even the "worst" on this list are engaging characters.
Listen! I was getting upset with so many great characters in the bottom, and then I read your comment. Makes sense!! lol
This list wouldn't be as long for Voyager or Next Gen (combined). Lol
maybe the 'worst' characters should have just been called underused
Are you seriously going to call Vic Fontaine "engaging"?
Too true 👍
Kai Winn should be way, way higher up IMO. The fact that she is so infuriatingly, saccharinely evil is *exactly* what makes her an absolutely incredible character. Her portrayal and writing were top-notch.
I agree, she was like star treks Dolores umbridge
@@clayvision Winn was an amazing character both written and acted incredibly well.
Yep, can't mistake a popularity contest with their effective impact on a series. If she didn't make you wanna smack her, then she would've been a poor villain.
@@monkeytime9851 Absolutely, she is written perfectly as a self-entitled zealot who uses her religious position and power purely to serve her own ends and Fletcher plays it with absolute precision. I know Louise Fletcher is probably better known for her role as Nurse Ratched but she will always be Winn to me. Winn is truly despicable and this is why she should be higher
She's the second best Star Trek villain ever!
In no reality does Cassidy Yates rank higher than Weyoun, Damar, Martok, Nog, or evem Jake.
I gave this one thumbs up because it wouldn't let me do 100.
Correct.
Damar was probably one of the biggest developments. You know they've done a show well when I guy you barely notice, then hate, makes you feel bad when he dies.
Came for this
And Dukat at 9!?!?! He's nailed on top 3 for me!
Yes, I agree. I loved Dukat and hated him. He's fantastic.
He's my #1
I would love a Pa-Wraith Dukat to pop up with a Jem Hadar fleet somewhere
Dukat is clearly top 5, probably top 3 with Odo and Garak.
Weyoun should be higher IMHO. At least on my list, he would be. Jeffrey Combs is a Trek treasure!
Weyoun is good; but Liquidator Brunt is Combs best
Rest well, Louise Fletcher. Hated Vedek Winn but damn, you did so well bringing life to someone we all despised.
Garak & Sisko both saved the Alpha Quadrant (aka the most lives; see In the Pale Moonlight). There's your #1 and #2. Garak saved Worf, Martok, and Bashir in the prison Camp. Garak doesn't get the credit he deserves.
He is but a simple tailor, no credit please. He would refuse it all with a sly, knowing smile.
Agreed. In the Pale Moonlight is still one of the best episoides ever.
DS9 shinned having the best supporting cast. Nothing against the series regulars but they captured lightning in a bottle with some unbelievable characters. No wonder they were always asked to come back
Space stations have shins??
Garak is such an interesting character. He had such good lines. “Never tell the same lie twice” a new take on never cry wolf. Quark was another one. Using rules based on money to outsmart a Vulcan.
The root beer scene is still my favorite. "It's insidious."
"Just like the Federation."
The, "You know the sad thing? I am a really good tailor," line is also amazing.
"My dear doctor, they're all true." "Even the lies?" "ESPECIALLY the lies."
He rarely failed to make me laugh.
@@kanebravo953 I loved the root beer seen too. I was like, Yes! Root beer is the best. My favorite drink and it gets acknowledged.
@@StormsparkPegasus I LOVE that line
With this list, I mourn for Morn.
I know! Why no Morn? In my book, Morn should have been put at the #1 position.
Drat, precisely what *I* wanted to say! :-)
how on earth did Kassidy Yates end up on this list above Nog?
The person making the list was drinking Klingon blood wine when it came to them... Never drink and write!
Black and female.
Fascinating to think of how Voyager had to kill off Characters to make room for new ones whereas DS9 managed to add many great recurring characters.
I assume it was beacuse DS9 was cheaper because they didn't have to pay as much for costumes and alien makeup.
Garak is brilliant as a character! We never really knew who he was, but did at the same time.
Garak number... I'm good with that. I have seen some talk here in the comments about Morn. He could never be on a list like this. He is a cut above the rest. He is all things to all species. You can't put a number on Morn. That would be like trying catch a dream and putting in to a jar. It can' be done. Because I can safely say, that to know him, was to love him. And to love him, was to know him... Those who knew him, loved him, while those who did not know him, loved too.
Whenever he spoke it brought a tear to my eye.
@@tails0420ify Whenever he sang, I needed retire to my bunk.
*Best Side character has to be that Ferengi assassin who throws a knife at Moogi during a hostage crisis*
Eliminator Lek. He's great, should have been a more prominent recurring character.
Paaahahahaha. I love how Keiko O'Brien (19 episodes) isn't even *on* this list despite the fact that Joseph Sisko (6 eps), Vic Fontaine (7 eps), Vedek Bareil (8 eps), Eddington (9), and Ziyal (9) all are. :-D
Jake Sisko was only in 6 episodes?
More than just the Yoko Ono to Miles' John Lennon, Keiko's character was complicated. At times annoying, yet Keiko actually encouraged her husband's even more complicated relationship with another man - I'd put Keiko somewhere in the middle between best and worst.
She was empty. I didn’t find her interesting in the least. She didn’t bring anything to the overall story line. The others did.
@@yeoman4850 Joseph, (Sisko's dad), not Jake (his son).
@@scotttild She definitely brought more than Bareil, Ziyal or Eddington. Combined.
O'Brien wasn't just a hero. He was a union man.
And the Most Important Person in Star Fleet History.
O'Brien is too low on the list, should be in top 4.
And he must suffer in order to shine!
O'Brien is the best character in DS9
*wink*
I actually liked Michael Eddington as a character because I did feel blindsided by his reveal of being a Maquis. One thing I liked about O'Brien was the touch his sleeves always being rolled partway up his arm.
Hago lo mismo para dar la impresión que trabajo más que los demás.
Fun fact! Wardrobe designed his uniform with the sleeves permanently rolled like that because he did it so often. It's also the inspiration for Mariner's sleeves!
I searched for decades for just the right words to describe Wynn. Nowadays, those words have been delivered. Pope Karen.
Your comment at the end of the video that Garak was the best ally to have on your side - or the greatest enemy, reminded me of the great line near the end of the episode "Second Skin". When Kira is being rescued by Odo, Cisco, and Garak, Kira remarks to the Cardassian leader "Don't worry, he's on our side - I think..." I remember thinking "A classic description of Garak!"
You missed Keko O'Brian. True not main curator but much more than some others listed
Lol, yeah, they "forgot" her
@@tigerbread78 Keiko sucked.
@@Josh1Day But only Miles.
Whenever she's on I fast forward through her shrew-like scenes. And Troi's "counseling" scenes. And any of Troi's mom.
You missed Keiko, the Nagus, Moogie, Kai Opaka, Brunt and Gowron.
The Nagus absolutely deserves a place on this list, definitely over Cassidy Yates imo.
That's LIQUIDATOR Brunt to you! 😂😂
Wait, Kassidy, ABOVE Nog?
Yeah, that one was a misstep.
He probably meant to swap them
Kira Nerys is my favourite character she was totally amazing & absolutely gorgeous
I love Kira; but I worship the Intendant
@@brainsmasher6617 so do I
great list! I would've put Kai Winn much, much higher, though. A love-to-hate character and ultimately more complex and interesting than Dukat. Also: Louise Fletcher! Come on! 😉 And where's Keiko!?
Fantastic! Garak was the most complex and awesome character and the also portrayed by Dirty Harry’s nemesis.
He was also Liberace!
@@TheWyldehart And Frank Ryan!
You did my man dirty. O'brien not making the top 5 is a damn shame. I love Garak at number 1 though.
Jadzia dying was a tragedy that still irritates me, but I actually liked having Ezri in the show. It brought the Sisko/Dax relationship full circle, with the pupil becoming the mentor, and I really wish they'd leaned more on that than her interactions with Worf.
That would have been a great use of her character. It seems like they spent all her screen time making sure everyone knew ‘she’s not Jadzia’.
I was sitting here wracking my brain trying to figure out who #1 could be, and I cannot BELIEVE I momentarily forgot about plain, simple, Elim!
The answer to the question "Who is the best Star Trek Captain?" is Martok.
Absolutely. And he was the mentor/father figure that Worf always needed
That's a funny way to spell "Sisko"; though, I do applaud your audacity.
No. It's still Sisko, but Martok was great.
That was great; well-written, with great accompanying clips. I'd love to see you do it for the other series!
Video feature request: Bookmarks. Please include them especially in videos like these when they have clear segments. Thank you
Personally, I think Worf and Weyoun should be swap places, but other than that, great list! (And Garak most certainly deserves his spot.)
Throwing in Zek and Keiko could have made it a round thirty.
Great stuff otherwise.
Yeah; why aren't they in the list? And Morn too! Make it (section) 31!
@@bradfordhatch5085 Yeah...I mean if Leeta is on there, Keiko ought to be.
I had started jotting down my "what about " list and Keiko was on it--and also the O''Briens' tragic daughter, Molly. I suppose everyone's definition of "major character" will vary, but I remember Keiko and Molly much more than the "what's his name"? Star Fleet admiral! Also, what about Quark' mother, Noogie (? spelling)? And the Grand Negus? Maybe what I just want is another list: "Minor but Memorable DS9 Characters Ranked."
@@elainechubb971 Her name was Ishkar, Moogie is "mom" in Ferengi.
Some odd choices. Kai Winn is a superb villain and to have her this far down is…interesting.
Admiral Ross?
Molly O’Brian had a bigger impact
Honestly I could actually see Martok as Chancellor siding with Picard in helping with the Romulan evacuation as a way to Honor that they were once allies in the Dominion War.
The best Star Trek! I wish the new trek was more like this!
We all do...
Yes, but I guess every show can’t be the best.
The fact that Garak isn't in the thumbnail for this video is a major oversight. But, that's exactly the way the character would have wanted it... and I suspect you knew that going in. Well played, sir. Garak was a vital and irreplaceable part of ultimately defeating the Dominion, and saving the entire Alpha Quadrant, and I fully agree with your choice of putting him at #1.
what about Keiko O'Brien she was a major character on DS9
The longer the no.1 character went not being yet ranked the happier I got throughout this video. I actually did a wee victory dance alone, in my room, when my personal favourite recieved the top spot 😁😁😁😁
My absolute unquestionable favourite character in DS9 & tied favourite overall Star Trek with Saru from Discovery xx
YESSSSSS! I squeed when he hadn't been mentioned by #2. I never doubted where he would land.
I just finished this series. It still hurts. Why must all good things come to and end
Dukat is such an amazingly written villain. You can see everything, all his motivations, his beliefs, his justifications, laid bare on screen... and rather than justifying him or making him sympathetic, he's still horrifying, an absolute egomaniac fascist and a complete slimeball to boot. And so entertaining to watch. 10/10, A+ bastard.
You put Kasidy way above Weyoun….
This.
Hey Seán. This is IMO, if I dare say, the best Star Trek List/Ranking you've done, being there for the premiere felt so dramatic and fun, because I had no idea where that list was going to go. It was super suspenseful in the best way! You guys are getting really good at these videos, thank you! 🖖🏻👨🏻🦲👍🏻 Live Long And Prosper!
How could you miss Keiko O’Brien?
This has always been the Start Trek show with the strongest cast.
I'd have put Nog higher, but good list! I almost turned it off in disgust at Kira thinking you'd give Sisko #1 and was appalled you didn't include Garak. I'm so glad I was wrong! My top 3 is definitely Garak, Quark and Nog.
How could anyone rank Prune juice, extra large, so low? You dishonor you and your house.
Just plain Garak deserved to be number one on this list.
Garak was the coolest character in Star Trek universe and Sloan might have been the only character who could match wits with him.
Dax is by far one of, if not THE best female character ever written and portrayed. She is smart but not arrogant, wise but still with her own flaws, beautiful and confident but not vain, proud of and ready to use her sexuality but not overtly sexualized, fiercely loyal to a fault at times... She frequently talks about the bumps and bruises and lessons she learned the hard way across many lifetimes which gives the feeling like every amazing trait she has was earned through more blood, sweat, and tears than we can imagine. I don't think any other combination of actresses+writers could have given us as good of a character.
Jeffery Combs as Weyoun was EXCELLENT. Imo, excluding the "main cast", only Garak was possibly better, partially due to his position in the story. Gul Dukat was great too.
Best show ever!
Absolutely.
2nd. Fringe
Glorious work! Total comfort food, thank you
20:34 I am PRETTY SURE that moment where "Bashir" was advising Sisko to surrender, it was actually the Changeling Infiltrator.
The way you tell, is the Hateful Narrow Eyed Glint and always frowning, smug and angry.
No Brunt, no Nagus, no Moogie, but Admiral Ross and Sloan?
Brunt FCA should be in top 10
Yeah, same.
Moooooooooooogie!
I was worried when you ranked Kai Wynn and the changeling leader so low, but that just shows you how many incredibly great characters there were on the show. And while I personally would've shuffled Nog and Worf around, otherwise you've got 'em nailed. Especially your #1.
Dukat's entry on the list must be a mix up. He's the best thing about DS9
Dukat is the most interesting villain I've seen (which Sean Derrick even said)
Yes!
Garak is my favorite, but Dukat would still make my top 5.
Garak vs Dukat is a very interesting debate, but I think they're both top tier characters from the series.
my favorites:
1.) Jadzia Dax
2.) Bashir
3.) Sisko
4.) Odo
5.) O Brian
6.) Dukat
7.) Garak
8.) Quark
9.) Weyoun
10.) Kira
Which Weyoun?
Tony Todd playing old Jake in The Visiter is the best acting along with most of what Brooks put on screen
I had so many 'that's wrongs' and 'yes, buts', and 'you've clearly misunderstoods' lined up, but then you revealed your number one. I agree. There is nothing more to say.
Jeffrey Combs is the greatest actor in all of Star Trek! His plethora of characters over almost every show is the last half century exude his unparalleled talent to completely dominate the scene no matter how thick and weird his makeup is
Another great video!
Excellent. Well done! Thank you
I don't think Quark is on Free Cloud, I believe he got some help from Rom to develop a franchise. Quarks bar all over the Alpha Quadrant
Right. Like I've never seen Ronald Mcdonald at any McDonald's I've been to ever. Obviously they both just franchised out their names and businesses.
The production team clearly had no idea what to do with Ziyal, exemplified best by the fact the character was played by like four different actresses, and no one seemed to notice.
Andrew Robinson was at a con a few years ago and was asked by a fan about his thoughts on Ziyal. I'm quoting as best I can here: "Ziyal... That was messed up from the beginning. The writers, God love 'em, were just trying to give Garak a squeeze, but we all knew his heart belonged to our Doctor Bashir." At that point, he hugged Sid who was sitting beside him LOL.
Poor suffering Keiko got ignored yet again.. 😂
Brunt, Zek, and Moogie also deserved a mention!
Aww you guys put Miles and Bashir together.
For me, the fact that defines Sisco as a character are that slap on Q's face !!!!
This was good for me to see. I only saw the series through once -- now I'm going to do it again.
Love this video! Great job. Great rankings! Sisko is still my #1, though.
I thought you forgot about Garak! Ha, very accurate list indeed ☺️
One word Mr. Ferrick "PERFECT" You once again NAILED it!!
Keep it warm for Morn . Thats all i have to say about that.
I love Dammar’s scenes with Weyoun; how he constantly gets under skin.
Yep
Admiral Ross is a rare breed ... a Star Trek Admiral who isn't a complete bell-end who is out purely for himself. He isn't a complete prick! Quelle surprise. I liked him a lot. I'd even forgive him his dealings with Section 31. All the characters have a dark shadow lurking.
This beautiful video reminded me how much i love DS9. Great job guys!
But: there was only one "Major" character and even she was promoted to colonel at some point.
What a great video, love anything DS9
I don't like this pick. It's missing Garak-Bashir
Mark Alaimo and Jeffrey Combes are absolutely 2 of the best villains in history, IMHO.
Deep Space Nine is, arguably, the best written and acted Star Trek series in the entire franchise. It's a very high bar, 'twoud seem.
I think it's indicative that although we can argue about this or that ranking, there's no more than one or two duds on the whole list.
WHAT good show.
I think I would have put dukat a bit higher, but all these characters are SO great. Totally agree with #1
Quark is by far my favorite DS9 character. I love how he portrays himself as a typical Ferrangi but really he is a good guy who does the right thing in the end, and yeah he’ll make some profit along the way, but common he’s still a ferrangi.
No matter how poorly she was served by the writing Ziyal was worth every minute of screen time. Without her we never get the amazing exchange between Garak and Kira after her death:
Kira: She loved you, you know.
Garak: I never could understand why… and now I guess I never will.
Whatever you thought about Ziyal the character you gotta love that she saw something in Garak he couldn’t even see in himself.
Jeffrey Combs deserves a character video to himself because he nails every role he plays in star trek - and he has played a *lot* of characters.
With such a great ensemble cast, it's hard to rank them! Congratulations on a thought-provoking list, and allowing me (and a lot of other people--98,263 so far) revisit this great show. Today, my list is more or less Kira, Odo, Sisko, Quark, Gul Dukat, Bashir, Jadzia Dax, Garak ... but tomorrow I would possibly change my mind. I tend to like the conflicted characters, or those with traumas in their past, rather than the nice steady ones like O'Brien. I find Worf (and Klingons in general) not that interesting. I realized how much I'd missed DS9 on seeing some of the episodes again when BBC America was running it. Now, alas, they just have Next Generation, which I don't like much--too bland. The big strength of DS9 was the characters, who really seized hold of my mind and feelings, for good or bad. The last episode was so heartbreaking--up there with the last episode of M*A*S*H.
Your awesome and awesome video big fan star trek
Is there a better star trek organization name than the obsidian order. Bad ass
My feeling about DS9 is the extended characters are even more interesting than the main cast. And it's thanks to interesting writing and incredible character actors.
My personal (and very subjective) top 5:
Kira, Weyoun, Garak, Quark, Demar
Kira in particular was very close to a perfectly written character, one of the few who had believable motivations, reactions, predisposed biases and a natural developmental arc (and not weighed down by insufferable and unbelievable moral virtue).
This is the correct top 5
I gave this a like...but no WAY I would have put Ben Sisko anywhere other than spot one!
Definitely higher than Kira!
