We perfectly know the whole continent is named America, and the United States is not the only country located on the Amercan continent. However, the official name of this country is "The United States of America." In short, we refer to our country as "America" and called ourselves American. 🙂

Coloquially everybody calls it America , us citizens are called americans too, its just how it is understood all over the world.
