People in the U.S. need to do research first if they wish to retire in Ireland. The laws have changed since 5 years ago and currently is utterly unfavorable for most retirees. Even my Irish friends were unaware of this. Last year i started looking for my little cottage, because of the virus I couldn’t get over, but friends helped having a look at the homes I was interested in. I found it, the ONE! That was when I found that I didn’t come close to meeting requirements. The thing is, I could afford to buy (in cash), I could afford to live independently with my pension and retirement savings. Live simply. But the amount needed by the government, cash at hand and yearly income far exceeded my perfectly adequate money here. (FYI I live on the coast of California). I love Ireland so much and feel my heart is there in every way. I’m a quiet country girl and love the simple things in life. My Irish friends say I’m at home there, fitting right in. When I house sit for a friends 300 year old farmhouse on 12 acres of land in co. Carlow, the first thing I pack to bring are my grandmothers old aprons. I’m cross stitching a lovely thatched cottage at the moment, guess I can’t give up the dream...there is a saying across the bottom ‘Home is where the heart is’...Níl Aon Tinteán Mar Do Thintéan Féin ~ There’s no place like home.

Here are the requirements for moving, especially the revised immigration laws (in 2015). ie.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/local-resources-of-u-s-citizens/living-in-ireland/ ( sections 1 and 4) I was aware of certain financial requirements in other countries, it makes perfect sense Ireland should have them too though I am no where close to the numbers a person needs, to relocate there. And this is something that has to be done annually. Proving your net worth. I just wish to live a quiet peaceful simple cottage life there...I’ll keep dreaming! Good luck to you🙏🏻☺️☘️

My mom moved back to England because she never really liked America. I love my country but I like to watch you tube videos of England and landscape photography. I myself am from Galway, living in NJ. Thought of going back only the Irish taxes are too high. Reason we left in the first place. US resents beware. One other thing the weather sucks ,cold and damp.

Every house that I've looked at that was priced in my comfort zone ended up selling for much more than the original price. so the sticker price is only a guide, which led me to be disappointed a number of times.

i got a 20 acre property with cottage horse arena & stables for 67 shop around. ive hardly needed to do anything as cottage has oil/rads, fire place, kitchen all just short of turn key. great home.

I understand preservation but people didn’t have big windows because of heat retention, not because they didn’t like them. I don’t see anyone making an argument against indoor plumbing, electricity, bathrooms or central heating
The house has been sold and I was thinking of county Sligo as well. It looks nice inside but one HUGE disadvantage for me which is a complete deal breaker is the fact that is by what looks like very busy road...why move to countryside if you live by the road! You open the window and the only thing you hear is the traffic and the air is full of smog...

Traditional Irish houses had smaller windows. To conserve heat and because there was a tax on windows and even on glass at one stage.The bigger windows never look “right” in an otherwise traditional house. Irish people usually prefer the more traditional look on such a house.
The funny thing is everyone assumes by narrowing these windows they automatically become tiny. These farmhouses are huge. The original taller windows would have been huge. I’m not suggesting they be replaced with tiny windows at all. Just big windows that suit the house style better. As someone who has been in a lot of these farmhouses I can promise you they original window style is far from small.
@@CheapIrishHouses Depends on the ceiling height I suppose. I know a traditional farm house with ceilings around 7 feet high and the windows are tiny. But my uncle lives in an old rectory and the ceilings are 11 feet high and the windows are huge. The traditional shape is definitely more aesthetically pleasing either way.
Totally agree. This house style is a lot newer than a vernacular farmhouse though, I see them a lot in Munster but they’re throughout Ireland and inside they are almost carbon copies of each other with large rooms, high ceilings, a central staircase and landing and 3 huge bedrooms upstairs. And their original tall windows are one of their best features. These farmhouses are a far cry from the vernacular cottages & farmhouse built around famine times.
Whats wrong with the larger windows?......if its a pre 1850 house it may have had smaller or post 1850 possibly double sash windows..........if you want a modern look for future resale large is best especially for the views/light

I live in the West Country and there is a house up for sale at the corner of my lane with three bedrooms and about four acres of land. But there the similarity ends. The four acres is very steeply sloping and has two public footpaths across it. If you put a horse on it, the horse would need to have two legs half the length of the other two. This house is half the size of the one in your video. I don't mind that some of the rooms are weirdly shaped but two of the bedrooms are tiny. And the price? A mere snip at £299, 950! I think this house is an old house, probably late Victorian, due to the shape of the windows on the rear elevation which are much smaller, and the fireplaces in every room. You didn't show the walls. A house in the country this size from the era I am thinking of would probably have a triple thickness wall - about 20 inches and the walls would be solid. If you look at the window reveal the thickness of the wall is obvious. Great channel!
I live in Co. Sligo and this house is located in Gurteen. It’s off the beaten track and not near the coast or much scenery. It’s pretty flat. House prices are probably amongst the lowest in the county. Where I live, this house with no land would probably make €350,000-€400,000.

There are so many beautiful houses, but so close to the road! Are there local laws or historic covenants that prevent this - or is it just prohibitively expensive?
Thanks for this these videos. They allow me to daydream about moving to my dream cottage in Ireland 🇮🇪 and away from the wackadoodles in the US where I live. I hate living with these people. I belong in that beautiful home, not here listening to neighbors scream at each other over politics and covid all day. Just let me stay in that house. I won't come out.
I live in the West Country and there is a house up for sale at the corner of my lane with three bedrooms and about four acres of land. But there the similarity ends. The four acres is very steeply sloping and has two public footpaths across it. If you put a horse on it, the horse would need to have two legs half the length of the other two. This house is half the size of the one in your video. I don't mind that some of the rooms are weirdly shaped but two of the bedrooms are tiny. And the price? A mere snip at £299, 950!
I think this house is an old house, probably late Victorian, due to the shape of the windows on the rear elevation which are much smaller, and the fireplaces in every room. You didn't show the walls. A house in the country this size from the era I am thinking of would probably have a triple thickness wall - about 20 inches and the walls would be solid. If you look at the window reveal the thickness of the wall is obvious. Great channel!
I live in Co. Sligo and this house is located in Gurteen. It’s off the beaten track and not near the coast or much scenery. It’s pretty flat. House prices are probably amongst the lowest in the county. Where I live, this house with no land would probably make €350,000-€400,000.
So how old is this house?
I have just received my first Irish passport, my family come from sligo and I am wanting somewhere near water but I dont have a lot of money to spend I could go to 100 hundred.
