I made this video for people interested in Japanese zen gardens. However, it became rather popular with ASMR-enjoying people as well.
Kikiyaya Zen Garden in The Netherlands Watch Pantau Chan taking care of her Zen garden. Relax while watching her raking the garden with zen circles and enjoy the sounds. People who enjoy ASMR videos may also like the relaxing sounds of raking gravel. / kikiyayazengarden
The Japanese rock garden (枯山水 karesansui?) or "dry landscape" garden, often called a zen garden, creates a miniature stylized landscape through carefully composed arrangements of rocks, water features, moss, pruned trees and bushes, and uses gravel or sand that is raked to represent ripples in water.

When I was really young, my neighbor had a Zen Garden in his backyard. I never understood what it was, what it was for, or why he would go outside and rake sand (his was sand not gravel) all the time even in poor weather conditions. I could always see it from my room, and always thought it was silly some 60 some year old man was playing in an oversized sandbox. (I was really little lol i didn't know what culture even was)
Years later, I actually know what it really is and what it's for...
Now, I kinda wished I still lived by him and wished I could ask him to teach me about it and let me try it. He's probably long gone now, since it was like 15 years ago.
This is really cool and makes me want a zen garden of my own now :p

I remember my aunt used to have a tiny little zen garden on her office desk and I would always ask her what the thing as all about. She would tell me that it’s her way of relieving stress and for me to never touch it or she’d kill me. I have a funny relationship with my aunt so as birthday gift I poured coke on top of it and waited for her reaction. I literally heard her screaming from upstairs. So I went down and gave her a new zen garden with like a whole bunch of tools and polished pebbles. She slapped me and then hugged me. She is a wonderful person and till this day I forever love zen gardens.

I love how footprints don't show up. I went camping at a place with a group of Boy Scouts. Summer camp. We were supposed to rake up all the pine needles every day, but that meant we had to walk through dust all the time. Anyway around the fire pit there was sand and I got up early one morning, and decided to smooth it out with the iron rake and I made careful circles around the fire pit. There was a strange flower in there called a Snow Flower that normally only blooms in colder weather at higher altitude. So I made circle around that too. I figured once everyone got up the boys would trample it.
But they surprised me and all thought it was pretty cool. They very carefully stepped around it and didn't disturb it for the longest time. It was pretty cool.

An artist at work. I had never seen a real Zen garden, nor did I have any appreciation for what went into it. I watched every minute. The 'crushed rock of a specific size range' revealed the secret to their canvas. I had not imagined one could create a gravel surface that behaves as uniformly and firmly as this. No pea gravel need apply! I also learned that you cannot create perfection on your 'first pass'. There are times when you need to step on a 'perfect' circle to complete the whole design. One repairs the damage to seamlessness and moves on. There is a lesson in that for me. I can barely imagine how much work it took to develop the skill to keep the rake handle on a 'true radius' (not skewed). Impressive. Thank you. (Seven years later you inspire someone.)

    • @Kikiyayazengardens
      @Kikiyayazengardens  6 лет назад +18

Morgan Olfursson Thanks for your input. Sorry you feel offended by my garden. Zen Buddhism is not about feeling offended, anger and hatred, but about love and forgiveness. Japanese people are always very kind to me and too polite to show negative feelings, thus I am surprised by your attitude. It is very western, very rude, almost Dutch. Fortunately many Japanese experts love my effort to create a garden that helps me to meditate and that is pleasing to the eye. As a Dutch painter I never feel offended by Japanese people who feel inspired by Rembrandt and Van Gogh and try to paint like them. Even if they are not perfect at it, it is their attempt and their joy that counts. As a friend of the Dalai Lama and having lived a monastic lifestyle in Asia for 12 years I can only wish you all the best and a peaceful heart. I bless you, my dear friend.

I've been noticing that my veggies fruits and all kinds of things that come from nature have swirl patterns I opened a seedless watermelon and I don't even know why I've never noticed this but it had a swirl pattern going threw it like yellow fibers I never took time to actually look for these things and seeing this being done reminds me of it..why haven't I ever noticed it? I'm old why didn't I learn this in school? And why is there so much pattern inside of nature! It doesn't seem randomized to me it's like it purposeful, a signature a thumb print,....oh I'm going on my Google search right now! Great video..GOD is good..

See that's where many are trully wrong about zen. Yes meditation and freeing ones self and all these things are important but zen teaches us that even in our daily lives we must be able to be this tranquil we first attain this peace learn what it feels like then apply it to the world, we should not feel the need of a cacoon or a shield from the outside rather we must live in the outside with no fear and simply live that is true enlightenment

I know this was uploaded and such years ago but i feel like just watching this and taking care of my own little zen garden is helping me slightly gain some control of my ocd and not to let the imperfections get ahold of me and that its not a type of life or death situation my brain makes it out to be (like when she stepped in the circle and left a footprint really set me off)
Im getting there little by little and one day i can fully enjoy the practice

I knew the one footstep would set off an avalance of haters, however, I fixed it a little later. Yet, the imperfections in a seemingly perfect garden makes it beautiful. It is called wabi-sabi, in Japanese.

Its strange, cause I can relate to this with yard work. My family used to have to make me go outside to mow and edge the lawn, trim bushes and plants, or rake leaves and sticks up, but now I do it willingly because of that meditation like state it puts me in. Its also nice when you slowly work at something over time to have all your small progress add up to a finished product that gives you a sense of accomplishment.
Still learning how to apply that mindset to real life though...

If I ever become a homeowner, I would love to have this. There's something meditative about just tending to the garden that would be a form of destressing. Like take a few hours of your weekend to just turn off and go zen. A medium sized spot, much like what's framed on-camera, and after tending to it you just sit and drink beer or whatever. Nice.

I have a tiny little Zen garden, about 3' across. Haven't seen it since the 40" snow dump. Even little, I enjoy tending it. Took me all one summer to pick the rocks for it and bring them downhill. Instead of Buddha, I have a horsehair ceramic seated native American lady. I started another one in my 10x10 entry garden, also snowed in. I just received a Mahonia repens in the mail to plant as an evergreen. I have 3 rocks already. I made a concrete lamp. It is a fascination.
