Uhh, you stole my comment, but I'm not mad. My Mom bought herself a baby grand piano when she retired and played it until she was 87 years old, when her arthritis bacame too bad. But I'm sure that playing the last 22 years helped her.
Great exercises. I'm a determined adult learner and started playing yesterday and tried the first and last exercise. Feel an immediate improvement after 20 mins of these exercises starting slow and building up speed. Definitely using muscles I that I haven't before as I can feel the burn!
Sir... I just found this video. I'm 58 yrs old... been playing guitar and alto sax for 40 yrs. Just got a new electric keyboard. Always want to learn. This is by far the best video on excersises I've seen. Thank you. Yes indeed!!!
I'm kinda skeptical at first, but after just two days of these exercises, my weak fingers at both hands feel much stronger. Thank you so much! Definitely keep going.
Very important to stay on top of the keys when playing stretches like the rock octave exercise. It's very tempting to cheat. Also, make sure to use a metronome doing these exercises. This way you can also reliable track your progress. If you can't play it clean, turn the metronome down 10 bpm until you master the tempo.
That is amazing, thanks from Pakistan. I am learning to play in church, God bless you more. May health, wealth, peace and happiness always be with you, amen.
@@MangoldProject That was a truly funny and accurate comment. Thanks for your generous help with technique exercises. I know it's an old video but thank you so much for this still. I took piano lessons for many years as a kid, and then switched to violin in my teen years. But like so many I fell out of playing my instruments in my young adult years. Despite that though I always kept a piano in the house. Now I'm a parent and so happy that my little girl is interested in the instruments, I find myself wanting to scrape the rust off of what I learned so many years ago and get some of my dexterity back so we can enjoy it together. This is exactly the exercises I was hoping to find. Thank you so much. 💕
Thank you so much for posting this video. I have just started playing (killing ) the piano aged 52 after years of never quite getting around to it. Really helpful and chilled explanation. I've been practising the circle of fourths chord exercise from one of your other videos. I've smashed through some barriers this week, thanks to that. These are next on my agenda. Big up!
@@juan7582 I wouldn't say easier.. just slightly different.. for piano you mainly focus on hand coordination and timing, and maybe how hard you press the keys later on.. classical fingerstyle guitar might be similar to this, but the real challenge in playing guitar is improving physical ability of your fingers.. pressing the strings firmly and fingering/picking technique requires a lot of exercise, just like any physical activity.. developing callus on your fingertips takes time, but as long as you enjoy the process, it's really rewarding later on.. piano requires crazy right hand left hand coordination and sense of timing, but as long you press the right key, you should get the sound that you want.. but for guitar, the same note can have a lot of different sounds if you know the technique as you are directly in contact with the strings the created the sound, unlike piano where your finger are not physically in contact with the strings.. I've played guitar for for than 10 years, and recently i'm trying to learn piano/keyboard on my own.. I find that hand coordination from my guitar playing helps a lot, but piano requires a looot more coordination than guitar.. though they are less harsh on your fingers.. :)
This is true for me too, I think my left hand fingers are quite stong from playing guitar so the excercises were not as difficult to get into as I had anticipated. I did have to polish up timing and coordination because its a different instrument. Starting slow or at a comfortable pace helps me greatly. Happy practicing!
i mean it has nothing to do with simple exercises but i find practicing the fingering for very expert level piano pieces incredibly helpful. for example i watched the fingering for revolutionary etude by chopin and i was surprised of how the fingers were positionened so you can actually play it as fast as humanly possible.
awesome. so pulled a Hanon on the first excersise and wow my left hand almost fell apart but in a good way...i could feel nerves or something opening up...the rest was great of course too

I don't have a piano in front of me . go up one octave I think that c will be c5 put pinky on one c5 and play the octave back. 54321321 thumb will end on middle c I think that is c4. now remove the right hand and play the notes from c up to to middle c. 54321321 simple right. now play the two simultaneously. . left will be playing cdefgabc. right will be playing cbagfedc.. in numbers right digits 54321321 . . Now move out to c6 with right hand play cbagfedcbagfedc . simultaneously play left hand c2 cdefgabcdefgabc your thumbs will end up on middle c at the same time on the right hand the digits are 54321321321321... note that 54321321321322321.. on the left hand .. you can move your hands out to the further details notes and you will get different effects.. it will sound like Bach..
May be a foolish question but do you recommend doing every exercise in different keys or are the keys you demonstrated in each exercise sufficient enough?

+Charmian O'Brien They chime in more than just from time to time. One day I'll make a bloopers video with them jumping up on the keyboard in the middle of a perfect take. I'll title it "Learn to curse in Hebrew" :)
Should you also reverse Ex.1, going back down? Thank you for your instructional video! There is another thing I'm wondering about: what is the correct angle to hold your hand when playing?
There is no "need" to reverse Ex 1. If you reverse it and it feels difficult then that means you should practice it until you feel comfortable. As for hand angle, there are some "classic" poses, but many pianists just do whatever feels best. You can see people like Art Tatum and Oscar Peterson almost laying their hands flat on the keyboard, while classical pianists raising them with the fingers at an almost 90 degree angle. So no single answer.
Kirving K1M It’s always normal to begin learning at a slower tempo, don’t worry! As you become more comfortable with the exercises you can increase your speed.

He said do it slowly anyway
@@poisonfish2176 But 1.25x speed is 25% faster ;)
@@poisonfish2176 are you stupid?
Thanks a lot for helping people learn. Much appreciated
I really like to listen to piano songs and am really interested in learning it but its harder than i thought😔
Love this. I’m going to use these exercises a lot.
Awesome! Remember to practice slowly and evenly with a metronome before picking up the speed.
Great video! Helped me a lot.. Hello from Israel 🇮🇱
Hello back from Israel :)
MangoldProject hello back from a french Israelian !

MangoldProject Haha I'm just about to say that from your accent I know that you from us and I was right lol
I'd been watching your video longtime and this is my first time to make comment sir,,your tutorial is precised and awesome,,ive learned a lot from you,,very nice tutorial
I was actually building up some confidence until I reached the 3rd exercise ... total n utter defeat xD
hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahaha
god bless u sir, u r soooo cool gentleman for the whole piano community... respects
To climb to the top of a tall piano, you must scale it.
Lol
Nice to hear Pepe and Dolly chiming in from time to time. Thanks for the great video and excellent exercises.
+Charmian O'Brien They chime in more than just from time to time. One day I'll make a bloopers video with them jumping up on the keyboard in the middle of a perfect take. I'll title it "Learn to curse in Hebrew" :)
+MangoldProject Make it happen! I for one would love to see a bloopers video, really. And who doesn't want to learn a few Hebrew curse words?
EXCELLENT LESSON...FIVE'S FINGERING WAS A LITTLE TRICKY, THANKS ENJOYED THE KITTY KATS TOO!
+Sam Stray Five fingering sounded strange and peveerted for me o_O
Only if it's in a minor ...
Looool.
I will take the third exercice, thank you very much!
Awesome. Thanks. BTW your cat is flat. 😎
+Pete Mills Flat? More like fat if you ask me!
Is it normal that i'm doing all the exercise but my speed is about 0.10x?
Kirving K1M It’s always normal to begin learning at a slower tempo, don’t worry! As you become more comfortable with the exercises you can increase your speed.
GoldandGlory exactly! that’s why i plan on doing and what i learned from a teacher!
your teaching style is very nice God bless you
you scared me with the octave exercise cause for a second i thought it was C to E
Thanks for the the exercises, and also thanks for the extra care on the left hand 😊
Shirl Zitting 😐I didn’t get you 😅
For some reason all my (3) piano teachers i've had had cats, hmmmmmmmm
All piano teachers must have at least one cat present to be internationally qualified to teach.
I have a question but want to thank u again for ur videos , I believe u have a gift in teaching. .. I'm teaching myself with help of ppl like yourself but I hit a wall often. Do u have any exercises that focuses on rhythm ? Not basic rhythm ..
