I am 62 years old and have decided to learn Piano playing. These exercises are really great. Practice this since a couple of days and even I am not the youngest for learning Piano it was helping me extremly to improve my finger/hand coordination. Have seen many other videos. But your's best. Many regards from Germany!
This is one of the best videos I've seen on this subject. I picked up a 4 octave MIDI keyboard a couple of days ago and have been having an absolute blast with it. I'm not interested in just learning how to play a handful of songs, I picked this up specifically to help me more easily learn music theory and have an easier time producing music in a DAW. I figure if I can play around with an actual keyboard, I can more easily visualize notes and chords since I can just play whatever I want on it. When I first got the keyboard, I actually ended up doing all of these exercises by just playing around with it for hours. The scale exercises in particular, just going up and down, then trying it with the other hand, and then getting used to disconnecting that "I moved my left thumb, so I need to move my right thumb too" instinct. I started trying to play a few opening phrases to some songs, and some of them I even managed to recreate the second parts of entirely by ear from what I remember about the tune, so that's pretty neat. I found the easier chord progressions got pretty boring after awhile, so I started to experiment a little bit with it and decided to try playing those same phrases above but with both hands in different octaves. It helped break up the monotony of it and made it far more enjoyable when the usual notes just got too bland to hear anymore. Something I often find myself struggling with is specifically related to arpeggios. My fingers have a tendency to eventually drift into playing the wrong pattern. For example, playing C E G. You go C, E G, E, C, E, G, E, C etc. What I almost always end up doing is starting with that pattern, then before I know it I'm just playing C E G C E G C E G. I'm having a TON of trouble breaking out of that pattern, for some reason my brain always defaults to that. My fingers on both hands are coordinated perfectly, but for whatever reason the pattern suddenly changes and it really feels like I have no control over that. Sometimes I catch it but it completely breaks the rhythm, and then it's like my brain is making dial up sounds while I compute what note comes next and what fingers need to hit it. It doesn't seem to matter how much I play the correct pattern or how quickly I do it either. I just tried all sorts of different arpeggios for about two hours, in addition to all the ones I've tried over the last couple of days, and I always end up going into repeating the first three notes one after the other, instead of playing it the way it's meant to be played. I know I'll eventually break out of that, but if you happen to read this comment, I was wondering if you had any suggestions on what I could try doing to break out of it a bit easier?

Holy shit! I’ve literally been struggling for like 4 days trying to learn from absolutely nothing and was able to progress through it all! Thanks man!!!!
Totally awesome video. These exercises, however basic as they may seem, will build the necessary muscles in your forearms right above your wrists. Far more important then playing them fast is to perform the exercises accurately. Take your time to nail the exercises presented in the video and the speed will come in time. I am a new subscriber. Thanks for posting such a helpful video.
When you were repeatedly playing C E G E C, I was singing Do Mi Sol Mi Do over and over again in my head. Good lesson, I really like it and it’s easy to understand

love the used of the graphics to assist in clearly showing which keys to play, while at the same time providing the graphic of where they keys are on the scale. I'm just getting started, and this is extremely helpful. .
I appreciate a lot that your way of speaking is calm, slow, because I usually find many troubles on understanding spoken english. As to piano skills, I am an absolute beginner but very enthusiastic.
After trying for ages to learn piano I discovered Turbo Piano Secret and this appears to be the simplest online system (google it if you're interested)

I am 65 and learning to fill in for our organ player at church. You are BY FAR the BEST teacher on You tube. I ca t WAIT for each lesson. Thank you! You CAN teach an old dog new tricks.
Hey man. Have a question about exercise 1. How fast should I be able to play before moving on? At the moment I'm probably playing at the same speed as you do at 3:43 Is that fast enough or should I practice more before going any further (btw I'm watching this video step-by-step so I haven't watch the whole thing yet)
Good question. There's no solid answer to this. In my opinion as a teacher, I would say do it for a while until you are generally happy with your ability (sounds like you got there)... then do something else to compliment it. Introduce a few things you can cycle through and you will notice your skills start helping each other up as you move around. Don't do too much at once so you're over loaded, but don't just stick to one thing only. 2 or 3 things to cycle through should see you right. smoothness and precision with those fingers is better than speed in the early days.
I have just few days back started learning keyboard . It is my passion and wanted to be master on this and searching a good beginners lesson and I got you . Thank you for your kid contribution to this musical world. Love your style of teaching which I didn't get lady few days in youtube. Following you..
Iv'e had a keyboard for years but I have never been a person to sit down and learn how to play it. I have looked at many piano lessons, all too complicated. I then found these lessons and now i'm hooked. Thank you
Hi great lesson, thanks for your time and effort. I've just retired and my wife got me a keyboard as a gift because I've always said I wish I could play an instrument. I've run through these exercises and really enjoyed them.... Obviously I've got to keep at them in order to build some muscle memory. To that end, I find it far easier to finger the chords using digits 1, 2 and 4; not 1,3 and 5. Far more relaxed with little tension. Is this OK, or should I stick with 1,3,5? Thanks in advance, Roy
Hey. Its not necessary to stick to 1 3 and 5. In fact as you progress you might want to be comfortable with a variety of fingering as we take this into account when moving between chords. Somtimes its just not practical to use those fingers. So i'd say, practice whats comfortable but keep going back to 1 3 and 5 now and again to try and keep those skills up with your other fingers. But of course... don't stress over it.
just started like your straight forward approach ,I'm a bottom feeder.so love the clear and concise instructions doesn't feel above me ,will try my best 66 and retired
I've just got a keyboard piano for my 53rd birthday and never played a note before so really loving your videos and guides. You make it easy to follow and your relaxing voice helps too. Most apps I found have annoying American accents and want money subscriptions which I don't want to commit to at this stage. Thank you so much. xx
I have been looking at hundreds of video to get me started on learning piano as an adult. Your video was the most useful and helpful with the perfect progression of difficulty. I am now a subscriber and will be going through all your lessons. You are an excellent teacher ! Looking forward to more of your content! Thank you!
Well, I always liked the piano as an instrument. When played right, it sounds like an entire orchestra. Why did you chose it? I was wondering. Would you consider sorting your tutorial video's? For instance part 1/3 - 2/3 - 3/3, and maybe even indicate which one to start with, so a complete rookie, would start with video 1/1/1, which would be the very first video of all you tutorial video's. Next is called 2/1/3, (let's say it's a three part video), next is 3/2/3 next is 3/3/3, next is is 4/1/1 (in case it's just one video) next is 5/1/2, (two vids) and 6/2/2, 7/X/X etc.. I don't know if you play list is sorted in order of difficulty or if it's just random? There is so much material out there, which is good, but as a noob I'd like to start a bit more structured and concentrate on one maybe two teachers. I'm sure there are lots of opinions as to which you, as a new piano player should learn first, but I'm sure you have an idea too? So far I really like what you've uploaded, and I'd like to continue with your video's, but it's kinda hard to get an idea as what to see first, since I don't know if your playlist is any particular order, so I often end up looking at other peoples videos, who may have a completely different approach than you (which is not a bad thing, but in the beginning I'd like it to be more structured), in a random order, maybe learning something, or maybe "wasting" time, on something that's too easy or too difficult. Oh, and I really like the way you divided "The top 5 piano exercises for beginners", up in sections, so that you know when to pause and practice. Thanks for getting back to us. :)
Hi Carsten. My youtube videos are generally beginner to intermediate level. As far as organisation, I have created playlists for certain areas, styles and difficulty levels. If you look at my playlist - ruclips.net/p/PLhmvEMFe19DsCFuu9lW4gDDIad3gAeZR7 all the videos in here are suitable for beginners. I get that there are literally hundreds of videos out there and it can get confusing so I think i'll put a playlist together showing my recommendation of videos to go through as a total beginner. I'm looking at providing a lot more 'structure' in my online courses which i'm currently developing.
I am fascinated by how much I've learned in a week than months of class when i find a good video like this one. ONE TIP for anyone reading , once you get the exercise down, try to play the progressions without looking down at the piano; you will be glad you did
Awesome! I love this and am learning! Thanks so much and it’s absolutely free...wow...thanks to you! God bless, you’re making it possible for us to really learn something worthwhile!
Just want you to know, you have helped me progress so much in learning keyboard with only this video. Thank you very much for graciously sharing your knowledge for free. 😊
I just stumbled onto your site (as a beginning player looking at way too many "how to" piano videos) and found your lesson to be very good and well-explained. I need to look into your lessons more. I need a plan I can follow lesson-by-lesson before my head explodes from TMI (too much information).
I hear you. Too much info and too much to do makes you not do anything at all. I'm developing premium courses right now (first one going deep into hand coordination) which does give me this flexibility to have specific goals with step by step methods to get there. Most of my lessons on youtube though do have little mini curriculums you can follow. I try to layer them up in ability levels within the video so make sure you mine everything you can from them and try to remain focused on 1 or 2 vids max that take your fancy. Other than this, I've organised my vids into playlists on specific topics. For instance this playlist - ruclips.net/p/PLhmvEMFe19DsCFuu9lW4gDDIad3gAeZR7 has vids suitable for beginners. I have a few more depending on what you fance.
In 30 years of music lessons these are quite possibly the most efficient and useful I have see or experienced for beginners. Well done sir, this is excellent work you are doing. Subscribed
Creative Piano Academy Yes not so much with the piano, but lots of experience with production, mixing, theory, guitar, drums and other instruments. I have been working more on the piano recently for helping with writing in real time on the computer and playing synths. Your videos have proven fantastic and way more straight forward and efficient than the other courses and lessons I have seen over the years.
Just a question for everyone, how long are you spending on each of these? I started today and did each one for 20 minutes, so practiced for an hour total and was planning on doing that for a week before moving on to the next video. What do you think, Is that too long or not long enough? Great video BTW Josef, by the end I actually felt like I had learnt something :)
You're very welcome and thats great to hear. I know we like to here absolutes like... 'practice exercise 3 for 15 and a half minutes' etc. And that's really good, but I'd go until your happy one day, then try something else, then come back to it. etc. Too much on one exercise and we get diminishing returns. You'll see better results by having a variety of exercises and inspirational 'stuff' at your disposal and you'll notice they pull each other up together. You will feel how they link together. Hope that makes sense. But doing is better than not doing so keep going and good luck!
Amazing...this video has been a huge help because I'm pretty much a newbie at piano...because I would mainly just search: song tutorials on RUclips and as I'm coping the video I find it difficult to find the keys because for a newbie I thought I could just skip the practice and just learn a song and I thought it would be easy but it's actually way more complicated than it really should be.. but I realize that if I just try learning one song I'm not really learning how to play the piano I'm really just learning that one song when I could have so much more potential using these tips you shared to practice with XD but I also find it really hard to play both hands at the same time and the right timing with my other hand so that makes it really difficult
Hand independence is a real struggle for a lot of people. If you check out my playlists I have one dedicated to this, or least a collection of vids which emphasize it. Its always good to give yourself variety. So In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with learning a song... but allow our skills to compliment each other and pick each up with other exercises and goals. Glad you enjoyed the vid.
You really helped me sooo much. 😊 Actually, I really want to learn violin. I still dont have it, and piano is what we have, so I've decided not to waste time and learn how to play it. 😊 I'm going to master this exercises. I'm already halfway. 😂 THANKYOU SOOO MUCH! Arigatou gozaimasu 😍
Creative Piano Academy THANKYOUUU so much. I can already play Canon in D by Pachelbel in less than a week. 😊😊 I'm not perfect though. I still forgot some keys sometimes. but you really helped me a lot in this journey. I really owe you a lot 😍😍
I've been looking for piano tutorials quite long time. And these your videos are best so far. Simple and short, but still much information inside. So i just want to thank you for making these.
Joe I wanted to mention the keyboard with the blue notes above your hands is very helpful because sometimes camera angles can fool you or sometimes the hand is quicker then the eye. Also the notes at the upper top right is so great for learning to read as well as timing. This is truly terrific, THANK YOU so much. Such a great way to learn.
I was trying to learn this without having a Music Teacher since i live in an Area were there's not much people knows how to play instruments (except Guitar and Drums, but thats all and I'm not interested to neither of those) so that really helps me a lot, and I'm already 15 years old so that'll be awkward to me hahahaha

Good to hear. Good luck!
Holy crap this is probably the best video I've seen for teaching beginners. Cheers mate
i know right
Holy shit! I’ve literally been struggling for like 4 days trying to learn from absolutely nothing and was able to progress through it all! Thanks man!!!!
Thats what I like to hear!
You mean that's not what you like to hear!
@fang wen how dare u
O my God, this is best, keyboard training for beginners and even proffessonals I've seen, thanks alot. My name's Hyacinth ThankGod from Nigeria, I love it
You are the BEST!!!
Never played a piano before & I'm 57 years old. Your exercises give me hope!!! Thank you!!!
This is way harder than it looks but I’m gonna stay committed
Have you stayed committed

Thank you for giving us such a great tutorial, as a beginner I actually enjoyed doing these exercises it's really easy to follow, unlike other videos I've seen on RUclips who've claimed to be for a beginner's. Bless you
Hi Josef thank you so much for your outstanding video's about teaching and practice chords, piano techniques etc. I am Ray Floatwithme a Dutch composer and very nice meeting you. We both have the passion for piano and breathe music. Keep up that great and creative work in all you do. Cheers Ray
At 73, I am really excited to learn from you. Sounds great with this first lesson.
The coordination in my left hand is actually tragic.

I 've been wanting to learn to play the piano but couldn't afford lessons, I feel ecstatic that youtube suggest your video and check it.... The way you teach is very easy to follo, I'm looking forward for more.. Thanks sir keep up the good work🤓
Great stuff Kris - Glad you liked it. Check out some other vids. Playlists is a good place to start.
I never realized how little control my brain has over my fingers until today.. and don’t get me started on my left hand..
Left hand deficient also, the struggle is real...

been genuinely frustrating me ngl 😅 is this something that got better with time?
love the used of the graphics to assist in clearly showing which keys to play, while at the same time providing the graphic of where they keys are on the scale. I'm just getting started, and this is extremely helpful. .
I appreciate a lot that your way of speaking is calm, slow, because I usually find many troubles on understanding spoken english. As to piano skills, I am an absolute beginner but very enthusiastic.
This was so informative and actually have me something to start playing. Appreciate the time you put into teaching us.
Bold of you to assume i have 10 fingers
I have 11!
I typed this with my toes
After trying for ages to learn piano I discovered Turbo Piano Secret and this appears to be the simplest online system (google it if you're interested)
Bold of him to assume I have a piano.

Thank you so much! I absolutely love this. So much more natural than everything that I´ve found before. Hope to be able to practice a lot so I can finally impress my teacher. 😊 Sharing your knowledge is a wonderful and generous thing to do. 🎹
You seem to me an ANGEL directly sent by almighty.
U r such an humble and sweet person to teach such an important lesson with such a clearity which i cud never get to find for my whole life.
God bless u dear..

All the sarcastic comments...he is trying to share the joy of learning/playing the piano with those of us who can't afford lessons. He is kindly donating his time, energy, and resources. I for one am grateful. Thank you for your generosity. We need more people like him and fewer cheeky, disrespectful comments.
the best piano learning video for beginners I've come across so far!
Fantastic to hear and glad it helped you. Which exercise did you like the best?
hello what software do you use to display real time , notes on the staff as you press the piano keys?
The dislikes r from the people who brought a keyboard and now it's there in the corner of their room unused
Lmao I’m not disliking but I literally did exactly that but I’m using it now I have it in the corner as well lol
If that were the case, there would be more dislikes! I think we've all had an old casio under our bed at some point.
I hit dislike because this is amateur-hour teaching and I hate when people make flashy educational videos about things they haven't studied.

Man what would we have done without RUclips before? So glad these videos exist - amazing.

2019 trying to learn to play and this is fun and easy to follow and understand. 👍👍👍
Hey man.
Have a question about exercise 1.
How fast should I be able to play before moving on?
At the moment I'm probably playing at the same speed as you do at 3:43
Is that fast enough or should I practice more before going any further (btw I'm watching this video step-by-step so I haven't watch the whole thing yet)
Thank you
You have teaching gift. I will definitely try these. Pray for me...lol
I used to be really bad at playing piano 7 months ago. Now I play like a pro! Get some great piano lessons here: HootPiano.xyz
I'm practicing now 30mins of the first
30mins of the second then I'll try the other 3 tomorrow. Thank you for this video!!
Excellent. You're welcome man!
just started like your straight forward approach ,I'm a bottom feeder.so love the clear and concise instructions doesn't feel above me ,will try my best 66 and retired
I've just got a keyboard piano for my 53rd birthday and never played a note before so really loving your videos and guides. You make it easy to follow and your relaxing voice helps too. Most apps I found have annoying American accents and want money subscriptions which I don't want to commit to at this stage. Thank you so much. xx
Have to love this chap, learning piano and enjoying every minute!
Finally I found someone who explain over the excellent , thank you!!
Good stuff Angorita. Glad you liked it!

Brilliant video. I've just started the piano and will be spending the next 5 months just doing this 😀😀

Welcome to the channel!
This exercise is SO perfect for comlete noobs. I've gotten so much out of this, and it's my first day playing. Thanks mate. :)
Wow first day! Glad you liked the video. What drove you to want to play piano?
@@carstenhansen5757 how's ur piano journey
I am fascinated by how much I've learned in a week than months of class when i find a good video like this one. ONE TIP for anyone reading , once you get the exercise down, try to play the progressions without looking down at the piano; you will be glad you did
Yep, one of many little tweaks you can use to get loads out of these exercises.
THANK YOU A LOTwhere ever you are! Your lesson is great and is enabling me to go further with playing my old piano.

My hands are hurt but if there's no pain in the process u can't gain ur success, thanks for making this, It helps a lot specially for beginners.
just make sure to not overwork and using wrong technics since this could lead to early karpl-tunnel [ written somehow similiar i guess]
Make sure to really bend your fingers (towards your palm) so they are like little hammers. It might hurt because they are hitting the keys too flat
Perfect Coaching....Looking more from you....God Bless you
Fantastic! Glad you liked the vid.
What a valuable great lesson. Learned so much repeating this and dissecting it for past 3 hours as my first time touching a piano.
I have just bought a new Piano and I think your finger exercise is really what I need. I appreciate and thank you alot!
In 30 years of music lessons these are quite possibly the most efficient and useful I have see or experienced for beginners. Well done sir, this is excellent work you are doing. Subscribed
Thanks Ste, That means a lot. I presume you're experienced yourself?
Creative Piano Academy Yes not so much with the piano, but lots of experience with production, mixing, theory, guitar, drums and other instruments. I have been working more on the piano recently for helping with writing in real time on the computer and playing synths. Your videos have proven fantastic and way more straight forward and efficient than the other courses and lessons I have seen over the years.
Thanks for those lessons!! I love them!!!
Good stuff. Stick around and check out some more vids.
Yeah that make’s sense thanks I’ll do as you suggest :)
i guess 2hrs lmao

Thx this vid helped me choose the exercise
I like your fun, easy going way of interacting with your viewers. Love it! Oh and the exercises are definitely empowering to beginners!
