There is evidence this song dates to 1650, being a traditional English Christmas carol. The carol is referred to in Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. I heard a similar version of this song performed by The Petersen’s and I had to put my spin on it. The guitar harmonics at the intro and outro are meant to replicate the sound of hand bells. I played the handbells as a youth in the church we attended, and this was one of the songs we performed during the Christmas season in the early 1970s.
