SURPRISE TRIP TO JAMAICA TOOK A BAD TURN

  • We had this idea to surprise our daughter for her 7th birthday with a trip to Jamaica. She'd been wanting to go for a while, and figured this would be the perfect time.
There's no denying the kids' excitement when they found out where we were headed. But their happiness turned to fear when they realized what they were in for.
It's no secret that I didn't grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth. So I wanted to give the kids of the true Jamaican way of life, or at least my experience growing up.
The plan was to spend a couple of days with family. But as you can see, we all got spooked and had to bail the first night and check into one of Jamaica's all inclusive resorts.

Outrageous! Your poor uncle must have felt so bad. Can you imagine how much he was looking forward to your visit?!! Mice are everywhere! Try not to forget where you come from!!

You missed a teaching moment to impart a life lesson to your kids. Life is not always smooth and super-comfy, but you make it work. A Jamaica we come from, we make an uncomfortable situation comfortable, we make it work, no matter what.
Maybe the next day they would have really enjoyed the yard space at your uncle’s house. Maybe they might have met some friends whom they could get to know and play with.
When I go there, I stay at a resort for maybe 2 days of a 10 day vacation, so my kids can see a goat, chickens, a donkey, a neisberry tree, guinep tree, breadfruit tree, go bathe in a river.
And yes, there are mosquitoes, but we carry the bug spray. And the roosters Nextdoor wake us up every morning, and yes, every now and then a lizard crawls on the Wall.
It’s funny because my 6 yr old girl child, wants to go pick it up. She doesn’t run and scream and act crazy, and I’m not apologetic about it either. That was my reality growing up in the country in Jamaica. You seem too insecure about your culture and kids pick up on it and overreact. Don’t ever apologize to anyone, or be embarrassed about who you are my love.

Feel sorry for the uncle, and in my own opinion since you were in his house already you should have just slept for the night and check into a hotel the next day.
Your baby girl needs a really nice whooping,or just a scold to put her in line because she is very demanding and lacks respect for other people and this is going to be a very big problem in her life unless if she is going to be under your wing the whole time.im not from Jamaica but I wish you could reflect a good side about how people live there.

I completely get that sometimes kids hate changes but when you bring your children to your homeland you get rid of pretension, pride and teach humility. Rats are filled in sewers in New York city and a problem even in high end apartments/home. It is not that the kids are acting strange that I got an issue with, is that you are acting like your kids are better than staying at a family home who was gracious to invite you. A lot can change in a minute, it is best you learn and teach the kids to be humble. Don't be the black woman who act like her people are not good enough, or country not up to your standards unless you are in a "nasty" hotel where all kinds of disgusting things take place. The beds you allow them to lie on in a hotel room is filled with bacteria..cause of all the people who lay on those sheets and towels used on people with all kind of disease.

I love the beginning part of this video. I took my daughter and my niece to Jamaica when they were 6 and 8 years old. We stayed with my mom in a community in St. Catherine. My daughter was scared out her whits about the bugs when the bugs came out at nights. Every day she would whine about going to the beach. "When are we going to the beach?", was her mantra. We eventually got to go to the beach at Hellshire, Ochi, and a trip to Port Royal. But for the 3 weeks we were there they basically lived a simple Jamaican child's live, chasing lizards and slugs, looking at interesting plants, going to the corner store, and the local church, getting introduced to the people who lived in the neighborhood, and going on small errands with grandma up and down the countryside. Since then my daughter has been hooked on Jamaica. She is now 28 years old and is planning her own trip to JA. You are planting a seed that will grow for a lifetime.

I just hate it when people do these things. Some people will always try to make a big issue out of simple things. You are from humble beginnings what did you expect?, Ritz Carlton?...All that money you spent at Half Moon could buy another bed, get rid off of the rodents and add a few things to the room to make it more comfortable. But I guess your intention was to make a story but you chose to highlight something so insignificant. I saw this video so many times and only decide to watch it because I thought there was some accident, someone died or got ill. Guess what?.. Nothing bad happened!

Why would you plan a family vacation and bunk at your uncle ‘s house? You are using USD in Jamaica. First of why didn’t you teach your kids about the island you come from before taking them there. Stop trying to be American, they are you are not. If you told them about your country instead of encouraging your daughter to be ‘bratty ‘ you and your uncle would’ve had a great time together with your kids for free with a t-shirt or two thrown in. My daughter just went to a friend’s house in Brooklyn and she had the same experience. She is from the Caribbean but we don’t have those critters inside of our house, she just laughed it off as I told her, welcome to New York. She is staying for free and happy that she doesn’t have to spend her money on accommodations instead of shopping. My sister used to bring her kids on vacation to the islands and she was happy to explain stuff to them that they were seeing for the first time. They would put their swimsuits on and bathe in a barrel of water, the put boots on and she would get a line and hook add it to a bamboo pole and go fishing in the river. We did not even have to accompany her. Wake up teach your children about your culture, if you pretend to be ashamed of where you come from you are do a disservice to your children and your country.

Why is the mother acting like she doesn't know about life in Jamaica? On another video she asks her uncle about walking in Falmouth and if it's safe to walk about, when you can clearly see other tourists walking about and looking ok.
Children will only react out of order if parents show their anxieties. It was shameful that you posted the incident with the so called rat in your uncles house. Shameful to post it just for views. Next time take your kids to Disneyland. Your kids not being use to island life is another statement that really got to me. How much of your culture do you teach your kids about? You only live 3 hours away and it's the first time you've taken them?

toppmax As I mentioned in my previous post my sister whose kids from a younger age used to come to 🇹🇹 and enjoyed time with family now they don’t need their mother to bring them here, they make plans with their cousins. This woman is concentrating on her camera, spoiling the kids with foolish talk and the husband seemed oblivious to his surroundings. It would have been wonderful for them to run around in uncle Jerry’s yard , picking and eating fresh fruits of the trees (free vitamin C ) than taking them to do beach activities they could do in the summer in many states in their own country. Doritos and Lays for birthday, exited over things they have in their pantry.
Poor uncle Jerry, West Indian people go out of their way when they expect foreign visitors even telling their neighbors they expect folks from the USA and then she treated his accommodations like crap. Bet he was happy that she left for a hotel. Choose some cheap places that she had to move from twice, il-afford,unplanned vacation. Ocho-Rios is where US folks go for vacation in Jamaica, even 🇹🇹 go there if safety was her concern. I think there is a Sandals hotel there.

As an Adult visiting an uncle in NY, I came across flying cockroaches. I never went back after that night until he moved home. My children started visiting Jamaica from the age of 3 years old to experience living in the countryside and wondering the fields with cousins and friends during the days. This eased them into rural life bothering the pigs chasing the chickens with a promised of hotel life and water sport before leaving the Island. They are now able to appreciate a variety of Environments. Fear is real and can stunt ones Emotional and Psychological outlook on life.

It's sad to see that you are missing the opportunities to teach your children valuable life lessons that will build their character and help them to succeed in life when you and your husband are long gone. But fortunately, it isn't too late to turn things around, because they are still very young. The little prince and princess that you are catering to right now will soon become royal pains in your life. I would have stayed at your uncle's house to teach the them gratitude, humility, and endurance. You missed the opportunity to model gratitude for having an uncle who loves you enough to welcome all of you into his home. Your children should have been taught that your uncle was giving them the very best that he had and they should be grateful. You should have shown them what gratitude looks like in that circumstance. What lesson did they walk away with out of this experience? You've just reinforced that life revolves around them and that they will get their way in life by whining, if they are slightly uncomfortable.

Who are the parents? Make a pallet on the floor and call it a day. The little girl reminds me of the ungrateful girl actress who played the biracial daugter in the old movie. "Imitation of Life."

  • @Caribbeanprincess1
    @Caribbeanprincess1 6 лет назад +10

Very spoil and RUDE children, particularly the daughter. Not their fault non-the-less, the mother is simply IMPRESS with the fact that they are biracial, in her mind they are TROPHIES not children. She is just happy to show them off ie. showcase them. Lots of black women in inter-racial marriages have this complex i.e. self-hate. I have interracial couples in my family, some are from that perspective, while others are just real pure connection. On the island, My cousin caucasian husband from Germany use to chill in the yard barefoot, their children respected their authority and trusted their comforting words. When he says it's going to be ok, it changes everything ...a hug, a hi-five and they are ready to face whatever they find unusual, only to end up LOVING the experience. While the "rat" situation was cause for concern, it could have been dealt with differently. My children are Americans and they adjust to any situation. We have always lived in upscale suburban areas. I took them to RURAL Jamaica when they were all under age 9, it was culture shock, but none of them complained, they adjusted, spent a year....and now its their fondest memories. They can't stop talking about picking Guava, going to the river to swim and catch shrimp (janga), going to the beach, making lifelong friends (friendships are more cemented and REAL on the island) Now when they visit as adults after so many years people still remember them from that one year and embrace them, though it took almost forever inbetween visits.

Terrific video! I'm going to Jamaica for the first time on March 29, 2018 flying into Montego Bay and going up to the country about 2.5 hours away from Montego Bay and I'm so looking forward to the authentic food, the beauty of the island, the people, the music, the culture! What I'm NOT looking forward to is the heat despite living in super humid and hot Florida, but here EVERY building has CENTRAL A/C. It'll be fun I'm sure. Your children are ADORABLE !!

Hi Stacey Ann, hopefully when the kids are older they will be able to enjoy Jamaica more! I know you tell them about Jamaica a lot, that's why your baby girl wanted to go there, but it can be a culture shock for kids when they have to experience something vastly different from what they are used to! As they visit more often, they will get used to it! I was laughing so hard the whole video! Thanks for sharing your experience love, it can be stressful traveling with young kids!

I didn’t think there was anything wrong with the girls reaction to that experience. I’m 30 and live in California and when I go visit my family in Jamaica (country), it’s definitely not what I’m accustomed to and could be very uncomfortable. The only difference is that I’m old enough to appreciate the experience and the girl is not. However- moms after thoughts on the situation rub me the wrong way. Like many have said, it should be used as an opportunity to teach the children. Don’t act like you’re surprised that things were the way that they were.

I really think it would be a good idea to take the children as often as possible to Jamaica so they can adjust and begin to see the real beauty of the island and the culture. Considering it was a surprise trip....that might have contributed to the issues at the beginning. Maybe if you had spoken to them a bit about what to expect, especially what things would be different from things they are used to in the USA it might have helped. (hopefully it would have helped them adjust and not discourage them)....

I’m a new subbie! It was good to see a Jamerican and her family experience Jamaica! I can understand the kids freaking out over the rat and other bugs and such they weren’t used to seeing. Let’s be honest, though! My mum is from Jamaica and she says roaches are normal if a place isn’t clean. Every time she went to Jamaica roaches welcomed her in the kitchen at Auntie’s Place. You just never get used to those critters! Ewwww! She just cleaned up and then no big deal. Being a Jamerican myself I spent summers in Jamaica as a kid and enjoyed myself. When my grand aunt ‘s backyard flooded and the water came up to the back steps I imagined it was a giant swimming pool. I loved Jamaica then and still do now. It can be hot, tho! But the longer you stay the more your body gets used to it! This makes me want to post our Jamaica experience on my vlog!! Nice vlog! You are so patient with your kids. Maybe in the states expose them to camping and hiking and other outdoorsy adventures so they won’t be so afraid when they travel!

You should have waited until your kids were a little older and would appreciate the trip more and most people usually book their hotel before you leave home. You have two kids that are use to living a certain way so you have to accommodate that so you knew living with a relative was not the anwser . This is not a time to be cheap or save money. You both work Iam sure and you and your husband could have put 50.00 each month in a kitty for 10mos and used a visa card 1000.00 go to trip adviser and got a package deal for family of 4 that included the hotel and you would have money to spend one us dollar is like 125 jmds🤔

I was born aboard and spent 3 sweet and wonderful weeks in the country and my cousins still talk about how i never complained about the bugs, mosquitoes, fat rats, very hot sun, getting my food cooked from a coal fire and taking pictures of ackee, coconut, coffee plant and enjoying every moment. I was even Blessed to see how you get rum from sugar cane was made and drank cane juice. Claire Nabulime, What is a black American supposed to sound like? Just to let you know, black Americans sound different based on a number of things i.e., what their parent's first language may have been, where they were educated & the regional dialect where they grew up. Regarding regional dialects, Black Americans from the NY, North Jersey area sound different than black Americans from the Philadelphia, South Jersey area who sound different than black Americans from Delaware, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida etc., not to mention the Creole regional dialects in Louisiana. Black Americans in the mid western part of the US have their own dialect as well as the south west & California. I am fascinated with accents & dialects. I welcome & appreciate them all. The lady you are bashing, I believe is a public figure. Most public figures, especially if they speak in the media, have acculturated manner of speaking. They are also trained to speak a certain way to assimilate information to the masses. I believe that anyone has the right to acculturate their speech pattern if they so choose. I hope this helps you to understand that all black Americans don't sound the same & they don't have to.

Hey people, constructive criticism goes a lot further than pejoratives and just being mean without any suggestions.I read some pretty repugnant comment, tbh. Children have different personalities, and at that age, they often don't handle change well, especially travel if they were not raised traveling extensively. Hopefully, after they get home in a setting where the children can focus on what mom or dad is saying, they can talk to the kids about what happened and how they should handle it in the future. They were not abusing the kids and parenting styles vary. It is hard to tell from one video, where the kids are out of their environment, if they are "spoiled," or "whiny."
I have been to Jamaica often and even injured my back pretty darn bad on a zipline in Ocho Rios in a freak accident. However, that didn't stop from from continuing to visit. I would suggest Jamaica’s North Coast, Sandy Bay (Fly into Montego Bay's FBO)& The Tryall Club which has golfing, sailing, etc. and a kids club or even nannies if you need that service.
GoldenEye is really beautiful and opulent, but pricey... but the kids would love it. Some of the James Bond movies were filmed there. It is about 20 or so minutes from Ocho Rios in Oracabessa, St Mary. www.goldeneye.com/
The Geejam Hotel is another very nice place. It is in the Northeast coast at the Blue Mountain (Yes, Like Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee which is so yummy) foothills and includes Frenchman’s Cove beach which is considered one of the top beaches in the world! Here is a link instead of going on about it. LOL www.geejamhotel.com/
Anyway, I hope people leave more constructive comments. It is hard when people judge you on sections of an edited video.
    Peace!

Your experience was not a reflection of life in Jamaica. Based on our personality types, we all react or cope with changes, new or exotic surroundings differently. Some people, including children, relish diversions, cultural diversities, and new experiences.
They often visit Jamaica and wish that their visits would never end. These are the outer-directed achievers, Inner-directed Experientials, and integrated Adults.
Regardless of where they visit or who they visit, others dread changes, the unfamiliar; and can't wait to be back in familiar surroundings.
