You REALLY need to pannel line the figure while it is still glossy, BEFORE you Matt coat it. Glossy surfaces makes pannel lining easier, and it makes cleaning the pannel lines 100% easier. If you Matt coat then pannel line, if you mean up or depending how you pannel line it, the black while sink in and stick in the matt surface when trying to clean and leave darker splotches on the figures. This is the correct way to do it, this is how all Gundam builders and model kit builders do it, for a reason.
Hasbro has said a few times that they have a paint budget for each wave. Meaning they can only spend so much money on paint for each figure so some corners will end up getting cut. It's why Convention exclusives that either have or get a regular release tend to look better than the standard release.
That is freaking awesome! I absolutely love the sculpt on the body and especially the head. Obviously your touch ups make it even better. Also I personally definitely prefer the single coating of lines; the thinner webs
Duuude thank you so much. This video absolutely changed my mind about the figure. I hated this figure because of how it looks but with a few simple changes, this figure is so much better. Thank you Dstar01!
I remember when I did my customisation for the marvel legends tasm 2 electro feeling lost on what type of coat to put over the paint job. Then I saw this filler that looked like it could accomplish exactly what I need. So I used that and it worked out perfectly, keeping that nice paint work on the figure where it belongs. I also was forced to touch up my mafex tasm 2 Spider-Man because of the infamous fading problem. I was worried about it, but it worked out as well.
Instead of a Gundam marker, I used a diluted solution of matte black paint with a sable brush instead. Once it dries out, you remove the excess with a bit of alcohol on a cotton bud. The matte black may be too much for your visual preference, in this case, it was for me. This time I used matte red and painted over those black lines. The effect is also similar to the actual movie character this figure represents. Finished it off with matte clear coat too, just like in this video. :) EDIT: I should add that take caution when it comes to using matte clear coat. The black sections of the suit actually has a textured pattern on it. Spraying too much means the clear coat becomes too thick and the pattern simply blends in and disappear.
Quick tip for anyone trying this on other figures: For white, use gray for more realistic looking highlights. Any other color you can use black. For really dark colors where black doesnt rly show, you can use brown.
This is very cool and useful to know. I don't plan on using the spray, but does the ink rub off or smear when handling the figure after it's applied? I don't want to get ink on my other figures when posing them with this Spider-Man.
Thanks for the video cause now i want to get this figure!! Great video and screw all the haters!! Having a woman by your side that enjoys what u do is awesome. Keep up the good work both of u!!
I just ordered a spiderman figure just before you guys made me want to get it after I watched ur amazing video good job keep making brilliant videos like that 👍🏻
I don't understand why people are being mean to y'all you guys are just helping people and being funny (don't let people get to y'all you guys are great)
I'm personally cool with just giving him a matte finish. While the extra detail with the webbing makes him look cool, it just looks too prominent to me. Because in these suits (the Stark Tech suit and this Upgraded Suit) the webbing is not as prominent as it typically is. So I'm personally cool with just the embedded webs with no markings. It's good enough for me.
I think it's best you guys go for a gundam marker, or even a Tamiya panel Liner liquid. This one is a bit messy and will require tinner for clean up, but is also great for weathering and will make certain details like muscles pop up even more. For a top coat, you can go for testor's clear coat. it's much cheaper than the tamiya one.
Are there any other Marvel Legends you would recommend using the spray on or think would be an improvement with the flat look? If I was to buy a can I'd like to use it for more than just spider-man.
Everyone has their own opinions and I really love your mod you guys seem like incredible people but I absolutely love the figure as it is when I first saw I was like no I’m not getting this then saw the movie, went to GameStop saw this figure and bought it I gotta say in person it’s soooooooooo much cooler and one of my favorite articulated marvel legends I love the articulation on this guy, honestly one of my current favorite figures in my collection
Thank you so much for the top coat suggestion! I’m going to do that with all my glossy figs I want to change from now on. Do you know if the top coat stays on or does it rub off over time? Love the vid. Subscribed.
If you make a wash out of Folk Art Black paint and then finish up with a top coat of matte you can achieve the same effect for less than the pen you used. Also did you use warm water and old tooth brush to remove the shiny sealer film before you started this project? It helps to do that first and dry so paint or ink will stick better, then matte seal it all in.. nice end results though.
Hey Dstar01 i need ur opinion, im getting this figure (and doing this process) but can you recommend 3 marvel legends spidey villains? Im having a tough time choosing😅 great vid btw
you can also use Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color. thats much easier to use . I used it to on a bunch of Iron Man ML figures and gives them a greater look.
Does the top coat leave an odor or residue on the figure or is it not noticeable once it dries? Great video and thank you for the tips I will definitely try the pen.
I Would have panel lined the figure first then done the first coat of spray. But in small burst don't go at it so much at one time. You can easily get pooling if you do that. A few light coats normally works best.
I feel like you should've added the black lines first before top coating so that if you mess up it's easier to erase with an eraser and you can seal it with the top coat afterwards.
Ik I'm late but since your able to remove mistakes with just rubbing it would the paint come off easily during play? Also did you paint the fingers @Dstar01
Did you ever have issues with the micron pen getting blocked or drying out while doing the panel lines? I've tried two separate microns and a prismacolor and they all last for about 10 seconds and then either dry up or get blocked.
To bad we didn't get extra hands with this figure tho. I wonder if the Miles ultimate Spidey hands would work. That way you could have the fisted hands and the wallcrawling hands as well.
Scale model-maker here: why wouldn't you draw your lines _before_ laying down your first matte spray? The bare plastic will allow you a lot more leeway to work with the marker, and it's _much_ easier to clean up mistakes than it is on top of a layer of matte spray. Is it because the marker won't lay down properly on bare plastic?
@@Figladee But I literally used a Gundam marker to paint the lines in on this figures myself just the other day🤷♂️ Still need to do a matte finish on the red parts though. It worked perfectly fine.
Do you think a pigma micron 0.45mm would work?, and does Krylon Matte Finish - 11 oz, Matte, Spray can a good matte finish since the one you are using sold out
Shartimus Prime wants to thank you for this.
Yes
I wasn’t gonna get this figure, but now I’m gonna get it just to do this mod. It looks so good

Wow, I was literally just about to do this. Thanks for this video
In the thumbnail, for one second, I actually thought it was the S.H. Figuarts one. It looked so cool!! Hats off!!

I really do wish they added black lines on the figure already. Not that hard ya did it before,Still a great vid anyways.

I was so afraid I would have to learn how to add a wash with black paint and that I would mess it up, but this is so simple, definitely gonna try this
Very impressive!! Excellent tutorial, well explained, humorous, and well presented!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
When I costumize my figure my mom usually says I'm gonna mess it up 😂😂😂

One coat of lines looks better. Still highly visible but not exploding off the figure. Looks more like the actual movie suit

@@Figladee That's not true at all lol They're specifically made for Gundam figures so it obviously works on bare plastic.
@@Figladee But I literally used a Gundam marker to paint the lines in on this figures myself just the other day🤷♂️ Still need to do a matte finish on the red parts though. It worked perfectly fine.
