      @@cyberwolf8383 I totally agree with you. Sham ran his little heart as fast as he could and when I think about the Belmont swear I cry for little Sham. If I had millions I would have tried to buy him and make sure he lived a good life. I hope that doesn't sound silly but I've heard that when horses don't win, they aren't treated well. I pray that Sham's last days were splendid for a sweet horse that gave his all. 🐎🐎

    The last half of the race Secretariat wasn't even racing the other horses, and he knew it. At that point, Secretariat was just flat out running for the sheer joy of it, because he could. God truly touched this horse.

      Sham beat Secretariat ONCE!!! In the Wood when Secretariat had an abscess on his gum line but Angle Light and Sham beat him in the final Derby prep. There were doubters, especially concerning his pedigree, to win the KY Derby. Bold Ruler no way. Could not sire a Derby winner. But Arcaro told Turcotte, this horse is emotionally and mentally favoring broodmare sire Princequillo. Calm, intelligent, patient, stayer!!! Groom Eddie Sweat put a lot of time into bringing the infection to a head, using hot towels and finally busting it open. Think there was a little relief around the barn when Eddie reported his work and time had not gone in vain??? It is said the horse himself immediately improved when the infection came out. He was now able to reassume the very strenuous workouts he required because he was an extremely big horse. He came into the Derby ready to go. A testament to the horse and his own team!!

      When you consider that he won by an incredible 25 lengths in the third race it really does seem like he was intentionally holding back in the first 2 races.
      As if he knew that it might be his last race before being put out to stud. So he decided to show the world what he was capable of doing and cause people to rethink his performances in the previous 2 races.
      With the conclusion that he was just messing about lol. Giving Sham and the rest of them false hope that they could win lol.

Statistical analysis of his sum running times in the three TC races adjusted for track speed indicates that his feat might be expected to recur every 1.8 million years. It was 1973. I was about to run out the door. The TV happened to be on. I wasn't particularly a horse racing fan and had never been to a horse race. It remains one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, and I'm not fond of racing horses for money and entertainment. But this horse was born to run races. @delaneyrichardson 5 лет назад +5

      I know this is a late reply but Secretariat would almost always break in the back of the pack and then pull a huge move up to the front near the middle/end of the race. Ronny knew he didn’t have to give him hell to have him move up and he didn’t tire out staying with the pack so there was no point in “racing” the entire race. He’d wait untill the end to turn him loose because of this. So my point is they weren’t bad breaks, he simply just didn’t need to haul ass to the front of the pack right away to win the race.

    It's not often that I am speechless, but one can't help but feel that way when watching Secretariat. The greatest horse of all time - no one else comes close. Yes, you can talk about Man O'War, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Count Fleet, Zenyatta, Citation, Northern Dancer, Cigar, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, American Pharoah... but Secretariat beats them all. As I noted elsewhere, even if they are still racing horses 500,000 years from now, we will NEVER see another horse quite like him. Consider that he holds the record times in all 3 races. In the Derby, he ran every quarter faster than the one before - something never done before or since on the first Saturday in May. Due to a teletimer error at Pimlico it took a few years before the Maryland Racing Commission finally confirmed that he had broken the Preakness record. And what can you say about the Belmont Stakes. To be blunt, it was the greatest sporting performance of the 20th century bar none. Secretariat destroyed the field, to the point where no horse has even come close to the two minutes, twenty four seconds time. Indeed, if any horse had pushed him, he likely would have done two minutes twenty - it's scary to think what he might have done. There are also stats showing that even though Ron Turcotte eased him off after the finish, Secretariat was still going so fast that he broke the world records for 1-3/4 miles as well as 2 miles. Just watch this video, and appreciate these three incredible races. We will never see another horse like Secretariat again.

    • @garynelson561
      @garynelson561 7 лет назад +18

      The way he ran IS amazing. In the first two races, he seems to hang back, watching the field and deciding just how hard he has to run to beat them, and then, in the Belmont, he looks around and thinks "I know these guys - no problem". Turcotte was once asked how you race a horse like Secretariat, and he said "You don't; you just hold on for dear life." Secretariat ran HIS race, Turcotte just needed to be with the horse when he crossed the line.
      That was a horse that loved to run and, more to the point, loved to WIN. He was a dominater. He loved leaving the other horses in his wake, and it wouldn't surprise me if Secretariat positively enjoyed breaking Sham over those three races. (Hey, sports heroes are often egotistical pricks - Secretariat probably didn't break that mold)
      He NEVER got tired. Other horses slowed as the race wore on, but not Big Red. I would have loved to see how far he could run. Standard racing lengths clearly didn't challenge him; would two miles or three?
      We'll never really know how powerful Secretariat was, because normal racing and normal horses couldn't push him to his best.

    • @ballhawk387
      @ballhawk387 6 лет назад +3

      One can make a strong case for Man O' War, who was even more dominant against the competition of his era, typically carried more weight, did not run with proper starting gates, wore iron shoes (as opposed to lighter aluminum), on tracks that were more loose and dusty, reportedly was not run full out when he had huge leads (like 100 lengths once!), and the races may have even been timed differently, straight from the start, rather than into the race, as the recent custom.
      Both OBLITERATED records of their era. Secreatriat's astonishing Belmont, and Man O' War beating the track record by 6(!) seconds in his farewell match race against the excellent Sir Barton who won the Derby, Preakness and Belmont previously - not regarded as the "Triple Crown" then, which was why Man O' War didn't run all three.
      No question both were great, supremely dominant horses, but it may be beyond the limits of analytic capability to really make a good call as to who among them was greater among 20th century horses.

    • @lired70
      @lired70 6 лет назад +3

      Gary Nelson, I just love the fact that he usually broke dead last! I truly think that this was Secretariat's strategy to go 1/4 of a mile faster on each curve! He conserved energy and obviously got to the front on his own terms. He was truly a stunning and brilliant horse. Jockey Eddie Maple's said that when you saw those blue and white silks coming up, you knew the race was over! He did ride Secretariat to victory in Canada, his last race. Eddie said if he lost riding him, it would be all over for his career. He did a great job guiding him through the cold and sloppy track! Of course he won:)

    I think that I am like everyone else when I see Secretariat. First come the cold chills, then the tears. May I add that even though he was a magnificent horse, he had a sound team to support him. Ron Turcotte, if you read these posts, please know that I think that you are the most gracious jockey of all time. You give yourself no credit. Secretariat had the power, speed and dare I say he understood what he had to do to win. But Ron Turcotte knew this horse, his strategy! He almost always broke dead last! Ron, thank you for hand riding him. I can't stand to see a horse cropped to death, like Sham was in the Belmont! I know this would probably be illegal, but once Secretariat hit the point of no return, and was running his own race, the other horses should have been pulled and taken care of. He was just impossible to beat, (on any day)! IMHO, it's better to care for the horse than to cook him, or injure their legs. Just my observation! I will always love this dynamic duo:) RIP Big Red, you gave your all for a bucket of oats and hay. If it is possible, I think you are loved more today than in 1973! Ron Turcotte, I have the utmost respect for you and always will! You brought an amazing horse to victory:)

Jesus Christ suffered, agonized, and died on the cross as a propitiation for peoples sins alone; not for animals who do not go to heaven. The Kingdom of God isn't about what you're speaking too, but about Jesus Christ alone.

    I watched this beautiful animal, as he swept through the Triple Crown, and cried all the way. I could not believe what I was witnessing.
    There was never, a more beautiful example of pure power and determination, and there will never be, again.
    RIP you most beautiful, Secretariat!

    This was the race where Big Red decided to show everybody exactly what the deal was. So awesome that so many people come here to watch and remember him.

    I remember watching all three races as an 18 year old that year. I had chill bumps going all up and down my body and I even started crying seeing him win the Triple Crown in the Belmont and I hardly ever cried. To me he'll always be the greatest racehorse to ever live.

    I have the DVD of the movie Secretariat and have watched it many times. I never cease to get a chill when he comes around the last turn all alone! We probably will never see another one like him!
