Instant Pot DUO Mini - Off Grid Power Usage Tests

  • In this video, I few tests using my boondocking power system and my electrical circuit testers to see how much energy Instant Pot drains from my battery bank.
    I set up three different tests. Test one records the power drain from my RV batteries during a 5-minute steamer cycle. Test two I did a 30-minute pressure cook and three a 4-hour slow cook.
    Test Results:
    5-minute steamer cycle used 9.59 amp hours
    30-minute pressure cooking cycle used 16.9 amp hours
    A 4-hour slow cooker cycle used 24.5 amp hours
    I was extremely pleased with the results. During the tests, I discovered that the Instant Pot used a little over 60 amps, but that was mainly during its heating and pressurizing stages. After that it went into an intermittent cycling mode, only drawing power as needed. My 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter easily handled the load.
    The low amp hour usage means we will be able to enjoy the Instant Pot when camping off the grid on battery power. Our battery bank consists of 4 large golf cart lead-acid batteries with a usable capacity of over 200 amp hours. Cooking with the Instant Pot DUO Mini will only use up a small slice of that which if the sun is out will be quickly recouped by our solar system. In full sun our five 100 watt solar panels can put out 25-30 amps.
    Two thumbs up to the Instant Pot. I look forward to trying out recipes. See previous Instant Pot Video where I demo it making yummy pork ribs - • First Try at Using my ...

    Awesome video. I have always wanted to use a pressure or rice cooker overlanding and this video saved me so much time and math. Thanks. Really seems reasonable. This information is golden, thanks. It really helps someone thinking about a system to decide what type of solar / battery system components are realistic. I like to get a complete picture before deciding if it's worth it or not doing all of this. Experimentation is important, too, of course. I would like to do similar tests and spread the knowledge should I become a van dweller.
    I would envision cooking black beans and pasta daily. I would think about cooking bread and have a bread machine but that might be more. It requires more time and the heat isn't as well contained, I don't think. I could do that but far fewer days of the week, maybe as a treat.
    Thank you again!

    Fantastic, just the test I was looking for. Thanks! Just for comparison, my old 4qt crock pot uses 85 watts on low, and 165 on high. The average power on your instant pot in slow cook, normal mode is (24.5*12)/4 = 73.5 watts. As long as you have a battery/inverter combo that will handle the peak power (700W) then it seems like the instant pot is a good replacement for a slow cooker (plus do a lot more; steaming, pressure cooking, etc)

    Great test! Couple of comments. First, chicken breasts cook easily in 10-12 minutes. Frozen, about 15. That will cut your power way down. Second, you really don’t want that much liquid in the pot, not do you want the meat to sit in the liquid. You end up with boiled meat. You should use the trivet (a three legged stand that comes with the pot, usually). A cup of liquid is really all you need. Once you have the meat above the liquid, you can spice the meat while cooking it. I’ve done a ton of chicken breast this way.

    Your test really showed the weakness of lead acid batteries, your voltage readout of 11.7 was really close to 11.5 v DC the level where most inverters shut down. That peculiarity of lead acid batteries is what drove me from keeping my 4 Trojan T-104's with 700 watts solar setup. Way too often under heavy load the Samlux 2500 watt inverter would power down when the input battery voltage dropped down to 11.5.
    I ultimately got rid of 2 batteries and 350 watts worth of panels. I'm happier with my new 3,000 watt Honda with remote start option and auto transfer switch. No problem running Air conditioner, micro wave, at different times of course:-)
    The ultimate solution is Lithium Ion batteries which don't have the Peukurt effect, the fatal flaw of lead acid. When the budget and advancement of tech allows I'm going back to more solar and Lithium.

      I just got a new remote start generator, looking forward to that feature this winter!

    Instant pot has been a major upgrade for our cooking. We have the larger pot but pretty much everything you mentioned in your review was spot on. We also use ours from our inverter and have found that the pot cycles either on or off about 4 seconds each, so the inverter size needs to be good enough to run the load while on. One thing I noticed about your set-up is how the 1000 watt inverter was sufficient to handle the 700 watt load. Your assembly of the inverter close to the battery is an important point. Usable inverter power falls off very quickly with cable length and cable size on the 12v side. Your ribs made DW and I drool.

    • @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN
      @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN 5 лет назад

      @@jfletc3000 I know this post is old but anyway, your solar needs to be getting Good sun ( at the least a nice bright day ) 200 Watts on a cloudy day will give you very little.
      In Northern Ireland even in summer if its cloudy or overcast 200 Watts may only give out 1 amp, over 10 hours this is 10 amps so this cooker will eat that up in steamer mode in 5 minutes, pressure mode 20 minutes and slow cook mode 1 hour 40 minutes.
      A single 100 ah battery with little solar coming in like above will use mostly your battery power so the slow Cook for 4 hours will leave you with around 50% usable power in your battery counting 4 ah from solar as well at best but that's using 40% as usable power, I prefer 33% max as not to kill my battery too fast.
      100 ah battery at 33% = 33 ah of usable power.
      Sucking 700 watts of a single 100 ah battery is also not Good for that battery.
      If you live in a sunny climate, 200 Watts of solar and 200 ah ( Two 100 ah ) batteries plus a 1000 watt inverter at least plus wired up properly to get the best out of it, this would be a Good minimum choice for this cooker if it's to be used often.
      Duller climates like Britain, I wouldn't bother unless I had 300 ah battery power and 400 watts to 600 Watts of solar because in winter solar is dismal, early spring and late autumn ( fall ) can be dismal and to be honest so can summer lol, so more solar is important plus a Good storage bank to capture the power of the sun when it's at its best.
      LPG works best here for cooking in Ireland or Britain as it's cheap, next would be propane although I prefer propane as it's cleaner than LPG and better than butane in the winter.
      Electric equipment in a small set up and perhaps a cooler climate is best being 12 volts as an inverter is only around 80% efficient wasting 20% of the power before you even start.
      This is all approximate and my opinion from all my many hours of research.
      It's as honest an opinion I have as I myself was interested in this cooker.
      People have been saying for a long time that a 700 watt microwave in a camper is pretty much too much and they are usually only on for a few minutes, this is 700 Watts and is on for much longer so it's not for me.
      I hope this helps you somewhat or someone else who reads it.
      Always work out the pro's and cons is my advice, happy travels.

      It should be OK if its that low under the Instant Pot full amperage load, then the voltage should rise back up afterwards. If it doesn't then the batteries need to be recharged.

    Ray, my system in my van is 200 watts solar, 100ah lithium battery and a 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter and a 2000 watt inverter generator for backup. Do you think with good sun that I should be able to cook one meal a day (generally 15 to 30 minutes) with my instant pot mini, or should I just use the generator for cooking? The only other use of power is a few led lights and charging my laptop and phone.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  5 лет назад +2

      It will depend on the time of year, in the winter days are short and sun angle shallow so the amount of amp hours is gain in a day is much lower than a long summer day. My guess is in the spring summer and fall you'd be fine but maybe in the mid-winter, the generator possibly may be needed. I'm not sure what other DC power draws there may be in the van such as fridge, furnace, water pump, radio, propane detector, etc. Cheers, Ray

      The test was performed using a lead-acid battery bank of four 6V golf cart-type batteries wired in a series-parallel arrangement. How low did your batteries drop - Voltage? Is that bad for the batteries?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  5 лет назад

      It's normal for batteries to drop when under lots of load current, at times they will drop under 12 volts, but the key measurement is what the are when they come back to resting state. There are charts that tell you how much capacity is left - ie. www.marxrv.com/12volt/voltchart1.gif I have a battery monitor system that calculated the Amp Hour use by monitoring the amps in and out of the battery bank. With wet cell lead-acid type batteries, the most accurate way to tell the battery state of charge is with a hydrometer and test each cell. I do that once in a while to make sure they are all in good shape, sometimes they need to be equalized - www.loveyourrv.com/testing-and-equalizing-my-rvs-4-golf-cart-battery-bank/ Cheers, Ray

When I turn on my InstaPot the TriStarts beeping and red lights flash like I’m drawing too much. I just can’t believe that with all this I can’t use my solar to run my InstaPot. • @LoveYourRV

      Solar panels fill the batteries with power so that we can use the power in the RV. Think of the batteries like a bucket of water. As we used things in the RV it takes out water, the solar panels help refill it.
      I would think your setup should be able to run it, maybe its a problem with the wiring. If the wires aren't big enough especially going to the inverter from the batteries it can cause problems when trying to run high power appliances.
      Can you run a microwave or hair dryer?

    • @LoveYourRV

      Someone would have to do voltage checks to determine if the problem was too small of wiring, bad connections or maybe defective battery. My guess would be too small of wiring for the amount of amperage required by the big 3000w inverter to run those high wattage things. Cheers! Ray

      Should do the trick if the inverter is a quality make and lives up to its rating. Too much voltage drop along the cables and the inverter goes into low voltage shutdown. Cheers, Ray

    My question is and I don't have all the technical expertise to be totally accurate is if where I'm living I have to operate one electronic device at a time like I can't run my microwave and my steam press the same time because I'm on a 15 amp line and the circuit breaker will trip if I run them both at the same time the microwave is 900 watts the steam presses is around that too I think I assume that if I bought that instapot that I could not use it at all without tripping the circuit breaker since the amperage is around 60 when heating up?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  5 лет назад +1

      No. That was the DC amperage from my RV batteries powering my Inverter for the off-grid camping. Since the RV battery voltage is only 12 volts it draws around 60 amps from the batteries to power the Instant Pots 700 watt needs. But you are talking about an AC 120V plugin source so the Instant Pot like mine would draw a max of around 6-7 amps in that scenario. You would be fine on a 15 amp circuit. The 3 quart Instant Pot takes less power than your microwave.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  5 лет назад

      You'd need to have an inverter capable of powering 700 watts of AC power, best to have some extra headroom so I'd advise a 1000 watt inverter. To power, the inverter 2 deep cycle lead acid batteries hooked together is advisable. Either 2 - 6 volts wired in series or 2 - 12 volts wired in parallel. If you have a lithium type battery then one 100 amp hour battery would do the job.
      To recharge them you can use solar panels or the van alternator or a charge converter plugged into shore power or a combination of them.

    • @LoveYourRV

      Yes, but it will take many hours of sunshine to recoup one Instapot cooking session. A 100-watt solar panel only puts out about 5 amps so you'll need 5 hours of the perfect overhead sun just to recoup what the Instant used. I have no clue what else you are powering in your van as well but I would recommend at least 300 watts of solar power if you intend to use a high wattage appliance such as the InstantPot. Either that or get a 1000 watt gas generator.

    • @LoveYourRV

      I'd go for a pure sine since the Instant Pot uses microprocessor electronics to control the cooking times. If it uses the 60 cycles of the AC power to keep the time, then a modified sine wave may cause the time to be off. Just a guess though. Also modified sine wave inverters are less efficient at power transfer so you would likely need a bigger one versus a pure sine type.

      @LoveYourRV  4 года назад

      Its always hard to predict as appliances often used a variety of power circuits and control electronics. Basically it boils down to a modified sine will run most things fine except but not as efficiently power wise as a pure sine. A pure sine will run everything well. If a modified worked well on everything no one would buy a pure sine. Also, you'll see than most everyone of the new solar generator power boxes and gas inverter generators are using pure sine, so that tells us something. They feel its worth the extra cost.
