- RAF had its ''Glory Days'' in 1940. when fought VS German Luftwaffe during the epic ''Battle of Britain''.
This song was sung by Bill Murray and it has been the common song among both British and US soldiers - not only in WW1 but in WW2 as well ; from my opinion - it's one of the best ''war'' songs ever !
I love good old British songs
i love the fact that Tipperary is in ireland
***** Wasn't this written by an Irishman too?
***** Didn't the lyrics say "came an Irishman one day"?
Christopher Halim its a Irish song written by a English man
Although its officially British its more Irish than British.
My father was in the RAF during WW2, I always wondered as a child about the big painting of a Hurricane on our wall with the words 'The Last of the Few' a man from the USAF came around and visited my father once and he gave me a silver-dollar... my father went into the MOD after that and I don't know what, but perhaps they were the greatest generation.

Thank you, I understand, Micheal Caine shows your example in a scene playing a German paratrooper in the film 'The Eagle Has Landed' where he tells off a Nazi officer and helps an 'enemy of the state' escape (a Jewish girl) - many non German people don't separate the two but they should, cheers
Cheers, lad.
+gan9e well i shall give a jolly salute to your farther for protecting our freedom from the Nazi's
And look at Britain now. Lovely isn't it? Thank god, You still have all your great 'freedoms' whatever those are.
+Svenbjorn well most of the world has gone to shit if the soldiers who died looked at what they saved they would regret it
"Never was so much owed by so many to so few"
God Bless The RAF
Hail the Hurricane and Spitfire
If that island fell...
the war would have been lost.
"That was their finest hour."
I am from the US and reading back through these comments makes me sad...The British are our brothers! They are our lineage and truest history. Any intelligent "novice" historian understands that the United States far from won either of the Great Wars on its own. In fact it is probably a combination of sheer luck and Nazi pride/ignorance most of the world is not speaking Deutch!! Between the failure to advance any further crushing the British Expeditionary force at Dunkirk (A large bulk of the British professional Army at the time) and the cracking of the Enigma code I have always felt we as an ALLIED force (keyword here being ALLIED) were lucky to have won the war. Not to mention the horrible winter of 1941 and Hitler's genius of waging a war on two fronts, never finishing what he started...Both of our great nations have had some ups and downs in our past. With things we love to flaunt and other we try to hide and would rather not discuss. I have a soft spot in my heart for Britain and British armor and equipment! Wonderful innovation over the years and fantastic technology. There is also a certain "style" and "class" to British Forces in my eyes. So cheers to all our brothers from across the pond! :)
you my good sir are a genius (ps: i am british by the way)
jgarner197 The real question is why we were even in those wars to begin with when they did not even remotely involve us to begin with. Let Europe have its wars and quarrels, and let us prosper in being aloof of them.
Vatonage Dovahkiin because you were attacked
The attacks, both the sinking of the Lusitania and the attack on Pearl Harbor are debatable in their reasoning, and both are questionable in nature.
For example, the Lusitania was a ship that was carrying tons of munitions to Britain, without any armed escort, essentially asking for a U-Boat to sink it. Also, there was already plans of involving the US into the war. To add insult to injury, the president in office was elected based on his promise to keep us out of war!
Actually, winter of 1941 did not break Germany ;)
If anything, it was autumn of 1941 delaying the advance in Soviet Union and supplying, Red army slowing it down even more - and partisans denying any railroad transportation. January 1942 only sealed the deal...
And as for USA even entering the wars... it always profitted from entering it, didn't it? ;)
I'm actually from Co. Tipperary. Going into Tipperary town there's a sign saying "you've come a long way". I saw spitfires in Foynes airshow last year.
Really? That's beautiful 🤩. One of my favourite songs. Hope to come and visit someday. Love from India🇮🇳🤝🇮🇪.
It's A Long Way To Tipperary' - a Great WWII Song
Great WWII Song
It's a WW1 song but was used in both wars. Long live the Queen!
Btw I know it was 6 years ago sense you typed this comment but this song was made in ww1
*WWI LoL
@@drakefan6425 indeed, "LoL"
Whenever I hear this I am transported back to Sherbrook St. watching my Dad marching off to war with hundreds of other soldiers while the sidewalks of the street are full of families holding back tears so as not to upset their loved ones who are on their way to war.
My great grandfather was one lucky man. He fought in ww1 and survived, then fought in ww2 and survived, then he got a bunch of medals. The only thing i dont appreciate much is that he fought for mussolini in ww2
well if you think about it he was just a patriot fighting for his country. The fact he fought for both the monarchy and Mussolini shows that he didnt care who was in charge, as long as he fought for Italia.
Same for mine. Sei anche tu italiano deduco. Il mio era un aviatore, è morto nella prima guerra mondiale
@@cardboardbox9119 Che riposi in pace
@@GioPotatoes grazie. Lo stesso vale per il tuo. La guerra fa schifo.
This is the most magnificent old British songs ever
The best version !
Cheers to my Granddad who served in the RAF as a gunner on Lancaster Bombers during WWII and to all the brave men and women who have served for queen and country in the RAF.
@UKkid19 Hi, it´s true the Spitfire and the Mosquito are realy beautiful planes, may be I have thought to planes like the Hampton, Westland Lysander, or some post war planes like the Buccaneer, Canberra, or the HP Victor. Ugly planes can be better than a nice one.
Why only 2,4k likes???
No one can beat the good old British songs/marching songs in ww1/WW2 long live Britain
Niaaaaaaaaaooooooo (onomatopoeia for airplane flying over) while this song plays in the background
Love this tune, I sing it under the shower all the time
LOVE IT! Long live Britain!
I live in Tipperary!
Loll
What's it like there?
Tipperary is a beautiful place! Going to retire there!
cool
Nothing but love from germany to Tipperary ❤️
A very happy song.❤
I find it funny how many versions there are of It's a long way to Tipperary and the differences between them. Some only have the first verse others say the chorus only once in between the verses while others twice. And some like this one have slightly different lyrics singing "To the sweetest girl I know in Tipperary" While most just say. "To the sweetest girl I know." That caught me off guard.
I share this with Denny he told me about this beautiful song
Its a long way to tipperary
Its a long way to go
Its a long way to tipperary
To the sweetest girl i know
Goodbye staten island
Farewell to times square
Its a long long way to tipperary
But my hearts right there
American version
adolphus schlickenburg sorry mate It don’t work as well
Even German marines at U-boats sang this song.
You know your history well :D I also know your very logical to mention it had to do with very experienced pilots. I salute to you :)
I am very glad about the long friendship Britain-Germany after WWII-and the teamwork between the Royal Air Force and the German Federal Luftwaffe..
Greetings to all RAF-Fighters from Germany!
Great song from a forgotten time! And great pictures too!
well guys , i truly cant believe ... BILL FUCKIN MURRAY singing his debute album from like 120 years ago , just awesome
0'16": The Polish wing commander Jan Zumbach of the No. 303 Polish Fighter Squadron of the RAF. :-)
Mi abuelo (de Doncaster) les cantaba esta canción a mi papá y a mis tíos y cuando eran chicos y yo la aprendí de mi papá al extremo que la tocaba con mi armónica. Me trae lindos recuerdos.
Thank-you dear John!
Great photos. Interesting to not these planes are actaully quite small considering. but great photos.
My salute & tears for my U.S. & English great and great, great uncles and cousins who died in combat and as innocent female and male civilians in London & elsewhere during WWII. You are remembered.
Thought i had a spider on my monitor for a second there, well played good sir ;)
Amazing planes good history but also sad 😔
Great RAF pics
Looked seeing the great pictures of the airplanes.

Im so proud to come from the town this song was wrote :D
Really great pictures!
This is my favourite war song my granda sang it to me as a baby cuz it put me to sleep I have so many fond memories from this song
Also i got that on Wikipedia, On the article Surrender of Japan. It wouldn't let me post the link for whatever reason.
"Everyone was gay."
The word "gay" had a very different meaning back then...
What a glorious classic that song is! Ring a bell baby!
I heard this song when in high school. One of the 'older' history teachers brought in their record collection of rousing war songs. So I got to hear it all the way through. Before I only heard on old movies which like to interrupt good songs with meaningless dialogue. LOL. While I recognize that it was a British song, there were a few American soldiers who enjoyed it, too, according to my teacher who was one of those rare birds who taught HISTORY, not political corrections.
Long live the RAF!
@thejpradera keep in mind pilots were saved because the battle was over england and the loss of aircraft was almost equal this is the reason.
Wow...The Mizzou Fight Song o_0
I'm a historical writer and researcher. I've studied World War II for many, many years. I've acquired my info from far more than one source.
@yankeeshogun
The song was a hit during world war 1 but it continued to be sung by the armed forces and was sung a lot in world war 2 as well. In fact it is still often sung today at remembrance ceremonies and other military events.
always a good song for cheering up
I here all the time how my fellow Americans act like they ended WW2 and I'm just like, "right, let's totally forget the Russians who fought alone for four years and the British who fought about the same time.
+Thunder “Blitz” Bolt But if we didnt send aircraft, tanks, and resources to the Russians and British they may have been overrun.
+Combatsmithen this is indeed the truth. I am just saying it would be ignorant to say that America single-handedly won WW2
Thunder Bolt yeah we didn't single-handedly win
I know the British fought the war longer than we have
+Luke Koziol the Germany last payment was 2014 for both world wars
Souvenirs ...j'entendais cette chanson anglaise en 1945 mais ne connaissais pas les paroles... I was singing this tune when a child,in 1945 but did not understand what it means ;
This song is universal, no matter where you are in the world, you always yearn for your home
Thanks for your reply,
I just like heroes, mechanism of war machines, and brisk war musics.
In other word, I'm just a boy though old.
I know peace is the most precious.
Wonderful song !!!!!!
Greetings from Germany!!!

Warrior race us Brit's it's bred into us . It runs thru our blood . This island will stand to the last man woman
What's with the WWII planes being shown with a WWI hit song playing in the background???
16 sec mark - Polish Squadron 303. Long Live Forgotten Heroes of Battle of Britain!
Keep calm and carry on!
@thejpradera
Our polish brothers are not forgotten!
Why thank you... :)
There'll be another one on this scale or larger my friend. My only worry is it will be like the Pacific War, with an uncomprehending enemy. The West v. The East.
me encanta...
Hello south writer. beware of those who come on these sites full of misinformation & sometimes simply pure bile.I can agree with your assertion. When in 1918 the final & greatest German offensive of the war, failed, overwhelming directed against us Brits, They knew the game was up. The end of the war was certainly speeded up by the arrival of large numbers of fresh & willing American troops on the battlefield in 1918.
herman goering was asked what he needed to win the battle of britain and he replied we need a squadron of spitfires
Best version.
yankeeshogun@ , my intention was on the particular song mainly ... that song has been very popular between the Brits during the 2nd War although it's an WW1 song basically ; nevertheless - it has been kinda the Hit than and the common Tommy liked it a lot due its words ... cheers :)
hmmm,Wonder how long it is to Tipperary. "Are we there yet!!"
I hate to say this, but the US teaches the Battle of Britain taking place from '40 to '42
@HTCEVOSONGS Britain took a pounding from the Luftwaffe and our shipping was massacred by U-boats. I will admit that the CCCP that was hardest hit but Britain is an island nation. We stood alone against the most advanced airforce and navy in the world. We also had to defend our empire in Asia against Japan and our African colonies against German and Italian forces. I think you'll find that Britain took a bloody pounding too!
I clearly stated that Britain STAYED OUT of Vietnam for a reason. What is your point exactly?
And to think that British soldiers sang this song as they marched to the front on the eve of the Battle of the Somme (1916) and to the worst disaster ever for the British army (July 1, 1916). The British had nearly 60,000 casualties, mostly in the first hours of the battle as soldiers were ordered to walk towards the German lines as the Germans mowed them down with machine guns. But in the holocaust of WWI, these loses amounted to no more to a small ant hill.
Nice song I loved it
I respect
Me to
I love this song a lot...!!!!!! Its simply best...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@pkpgpk, so am I, this and RAF march
Thanks to the brave Heroes of The Royal Air Force Who saved the world in WWII
@Marlever357 very true
Who's here from valiant hearts?
Does Verdun count?
And a heroic populace that was willing to fight to the last, come hell or ruin.
@Zultra2
I would gladly be 'fodder' for the crown.
Such a classic song.
I basically mean miles per gallon which is measurement in fuel. The south Eastern side of the pacific ocean was possible because it's close to Japan. I can acknowledge that they attacked the Northern part of Australia and lost, that's the same with Britain loosing countries like Burma and I think Malaysia along with Singapore to the Japanese which is no surprise due to British forces couldn't send enough men to reinforce.
Up, up and away!
nostalgia
@Oliver9402
The truth is that the Poles saved your English bacon. As for Irish in WWII - nuff said. Tens of thousands of mariners' lives would be saved only if Ireland made its ports available for Atlantic convoys.
The U.S. would not exist today without Great Britain. Thanks. God bless us every one.
My apologise to any British I may have offended with my statements. I made the mistake of not checking ErikHgK's country before I posted. He is from the Netherlands, not Britain. I have seen so many posts by British lambasting us for joining the war "late" that I assumed he was another. It doesn't change the facts I posted, but I still apologise.
+Damir Klarić Which war song do you think is the best part ?
So you love capitalist songs
"Over the top lads! TALY HOOOOOO!"
Ah we brits sure know how to make a good song ey chaps
Oh yes my good fella
This song is Irish but ok
Ye sure do. Especially when the song is about my County. Up Tipp.
I have to learn the words to its a long way to Tipperary for my school homework
The most beatyfull plains!!!
I would like to say thanks for the help 20000 plus irish men at some risk joind the army navey airforce of the the uk some were treated badly by the irish goverment some irish men deserted the irish army to go to the uk they were parded a few year ago just saying
what do you mean "Glory Days", the hight of British engineering is far from over my friend, may i remind you of planes such as the F-35 built yes by the Americans but primarily designed by the Brits. and also our famous space parts industry.
I wouldn't brag about designing the F-35.
JGZulu yep that thing is way over budget! And will be a failure!
JGZulu Too right.
+TV-94 with the amount of money spent on the F-35 so far we could have had 8,666 F-22's..... Imagine that. But the harrier does need a replacement, it is a subsonic attack aircraft and not too great at air to air, also the electronics are outdated. Even with modernizations it would still be too slow to compete.
Combatsmithen the F-35 Now has dropped significantly in price and is in perfect working order.
@thejpradera for saving the english just for example the english moved no 65 squadron to scotland when polish infamous squadron 303 was activated and the raf shot down over 100 less aricraft in september compared with august despite favourable conditions as the german planes were moving further inland. So I doubt this polish propaganda and think they were more useful in allowing raf to rest other squadrons (I am basing this on czech writer stats)
