@@Jonas-gl9ke it’s because the wages of sin is death. Jesus came to take the punishment we deserve for all our wrongdoing on Himself for those who will trust in Him for the forgiveness of their sins. And Jesus will come again at the end of history to judge all those who rejected His gift of salvation from God’s righteous wrath on their sin and chose to continue on in rebellion against Him. God gave people 120 years to turn from their sin while Noah built the ark (a lesson and warning before their very eyes) and preached to them to turn from their sins during that time. These were people who He said their thoughts and desires were only evil continually. Gods gave the people of Canaan 400 years to repent before the Israelites went in to purge them from the land and claim it for their own according to God’s promise. These people were sacrificing their children on the altars of a false demon god (known as Molech) by placing them on bronze hands and cooking them alive with a fire beneath them, among other reprehensible things. Is that not disgusting? God was punishing evil and putting an end to it. Do you think it would be good for God to just let evil run rampant forever and destroy all of creation? Would you tolerate, for example, criminals in your town being allowed to do whatever they wanted to anybody, steal from them, beat them, destroy their property, etc, without consequences? Society would break down. You would be terrified to leave your home (that hopefully doesn’t get broken in to). You would want it to stop. You would want justice to be done. Stopping evil is called justice. God is good because he deals with evil, He is just. My friend, you have a wrong understanding of who God is. Please don’t listen to what the world in rebellion against Him says about Him, it’s most likely false or only half true. Read what He has revealed about Himself in the Scriptures to find out who He truly is. The Word is how God has shown us who He is on a deeper level than just observing things in creation. To “win” the game, you need to worship the designer. To make it more challenging, the designer will not provide you with a methodology to be certain of the designer’s existence. Your consent is NOT required to play the game - you are required to play the game whether you want to or not. Is this a fair game? How could the rules be altered to make the game more fair? Jonah being in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights _is_ an allegory for Jesus spending three days and three nights in the belly of the Earth. It is also likely literal and historical.
Hi! Progressive Christian here. :-) This is probably my favorite video out of this series thus far. For the most part, I agree with Mike on all of this. I'm not sure that Mike & Progressive Christians are really saying different things here. Although there is more debate over what parts are literal than some would believe. The Bible has to be taken as a whole. The Old Testament does inform the context of gospels. However similarly, the Fruit of the Spirit, given to us by Christ, helps us make sense of why God does what He did in the Old Testament. So it's not "my private opinion / extra-biblical opinion of Jesus" ... It's my scriptural knowledge of what Jesus says to discern how to apply the Old Testament to life today. The Bible says, "Don't go beyond the writings." However, Jesus rebuked the loveless Pharisees with the writings themselves, for they followed the scriptures but couldn't discern The Spirit. You say that Jesus said the scripture cannot be broken. That is true. It's a WHOLE. However, that also means that you must ALSO take into consideration that Jesus specifically makes allotments for "unlawful" activity because it doesn't break the law but FULFILLS the trajectory / purpose of the law. Matthew 12: 1-8 ... "Kindness" is typically translated to "mercy". MERCY not sacrifice. That's also written in Hosea. It's there for a reason. We cannot just gloss over that.
It is necessary to understand who "God", and "Christ" are to 'famous' folks. The J was not created until about 500 yrs ago. Remember, "Hallowed Be Thy Name" -- so titles often refer to another god, in the world we live in today.

I believe the most non-literal books in the Bible are genesis and the revelation. Taking them literally leads to flat earth beliefs and YEC beliefs. I begin to take biblical history as literal since Abraham.
@@orthodoxinquirer5693 It most certainly leads to flat earth beliefs as well. There was a time when massive amount of flat earthers were angrily attacking people like Kent Hovind for being dishonest by keep claiming the earth is a globe and many of them confessed that it was precisely Kent Hovinds doctrine which teaches to take genesis literally, which lead them to become a flat earther. YEC and flat earth, both goes hand in hand together because both of them are based on the same foundation - ignorance of all the sicentific evidence and hyper literal interpretation of genesis.
I’ve started to note that most churches start from their tradition, or the personality and beliefs of the pastor, and mine the Bible for proof texts. I believe our baseline should be the intention of the biblical writers that God inspired to write. Then there are the mysteries revealed in the NT about the OT writings that the writers *may* not have fully intended. These are the texts and meanings accepted by the church. Mapping to our context and extracting application are downstream of that.
The 4 hermeneutics are easy to understand. The literal speaks to deeds, allegory to faith, The moral how to act, anagogy our destiny. All are based on the literal sense. The other three are called "spiritual senses" and engage respectively faith, charity and hope.
You know when Sunday school teachers read the Bible stories to children they don’t say well now then don’t take these stories literally instead they teach kids that these are true accounts that actually occurred in history.
Origen talked about 4 different methods of interpreting Scripture, but he felt that all four methods applied to all Scripture and not just bits and pieces of it
How fast did you realize, in the thumbnail, that Mike, portraying as a progressive Christian, stretching a little stretchy man, portraying as the bible, as the progressive Christian is stretching the truth or something similar
The list of interpretive methods reminds me of Origin, where he wasn't talking genre, but layers of meaning. And Origin believed the allegorical or "spiritual" was the most important and highest interpretation. He was a brilliant dude... but he was heavily influenced by the Alexandrian school of thought and was only 1 step removed from being gnostic.
1:07-1:12 That’s not the emphasis of the text. It’s a modern apologetic obsession to counter opposition to established orthodoxy. The text simply says that Jesus has replaced the roman emperor and foreshadows Pentecost.
Dammit, i watched the full uncut thing and because of that i didn't watch any of the cut ones that have the woman in the thumbnail bc i know where it is from, but you've stopped putting her in the thumbnail haha.
To be fair, Barth sort of started that intertwine method, not Boyd or Zaan. So I often find it odd when mainstreamers sing the praises if Barth but crap on Boyd. Yes Barth was brilliant, and he cast a massive shadow, but it's the exact same core error.
Do they expect people to take the points made in that manifesto as literal or allegorical? I suspect they’re quite happy to have people treat their points quite differently than how they treat scripture.
The way Zond (did I spell the correctly) talks to Jesus when he reads the Old Testament is soooo concerning to me. It sounds a lot like Neale Donald Walsch in 'Conversations with God'. I read the whole thing and thought it was great until I became a Christian and now I can see the kind of damage created by that way of thinking about God and the Bible. Mike Winger, what do you think about the book, 'Conversations with God'? If you've read it I would really like to hear what you have to say about it.
The answer on this one is you need the Holy Spirit to interpret the Bible. Sure, we can make a little headway on our own if we're given natural wisdom. But to get very far, HS is the best teacher and the God-given teacher.

The early church had a different understanding of Hell than we do today. I believe the concept of fire is metaphorical, and this has to do with the language being used, but this does not mean that it’s not real.
The Early church had various opinions on this particular subject and were in general much better at discussing with each other than on these forums where everyone tend think their interpretation equals exactly what the bible says and everything else is condemned.
No where. New Testament just means new covenant. When Jesus died we changed from the Old Mosaic Covenant to the New Covenant. That’s why books with Jesus it talking about Jesus are called he New Testament
Hey Anna. Just because Jesus didn't specifically command to section up the scriptures the way that we have, that doesn't mean that we can ignore what scripture says and passively reject the doctrine in the bible as 'allegorical'. Jesus also didn't speak English, he spoke Aramaic, does this mean that his words about matters to do with hell judgment and righteousness are any less significant?
@@annapennrose1158 Jesus established his church, and established a New Covenant for his church through his church. There are 27 books of the official New Testament and they are all necessary.
In that question "You will either use the Bible to interpret Jesus or use Jesus to interpret the Bible," I'm reminded of the many times the Scribes, Pharisees, and Saducees tried to trick Jesus with the Law. Each time there's this little laughter in my head. "These people are going to try to trip Him up with the Law. Who do they thing wrote the Law?"
Interesting theory does that mean the monsters in revelation will be very real like Jason and Argonauts or Sinbad movies from years ago or are some things symbolic.
I think you're seriously straw-manning. I believe in interpreting the bible though Jesus. But I of course do that by keeping in mind where the bible talks about Jesus. It's like Hebrews 1 says. "In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word." Jesus is God's final word. The point is, if we read something in the Bible, and as we interpret, we paint a picture of God in a way that is country to Jesus, then we interpreted wrongly! Because Jesus is God's exact representation. Or as Colossians :16-17 say "Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ." This is telling us that a lot of the law is but a shadow. The reality is Jesus. So again how do we interpret the law. By looking merely at the shadow? Or by looking at Jesus?
In all fairness, I would argue the “Jesus with-out the Bible” is seen in Christ followers and those that take up the title “Christian.” Now, obviously Christ followers are supposed to follow the Bible and Jesus’ teachings included, but some people’s first introduction to Christ is through “christians” that don’t walk the walk
The question at the end was “who judges between us?” Answer: Jesus. (poking a little at your argument here but there are some holes). For example, can Jesus speak today if it isn’t part of the Bible? He is a living, resurrected being correct?
Jesus sent Peter to catch a fish that had a coin that would pay their taxes, tell me, in the context of the Gospels is this literal? "Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee." (Mat 17:27)
6:17-6:20 Two things. One: We don’t have the words of Jesus. We have written legends of Jesus. Two: The statement isn’t meant to say that the old testament is all great. It’s meant to connect the dots and establish a winning theme (Creation over empire).

A must read 😄 God bless you, keep searching for the truth.

A game is designed where the “winners” get an eternal reward and the “losers” get an eternal punishment. If justice is getting what you deserve and mercy is not getting what you deserve, would you describe the rules of this game as just and merciful? Would it be better to play the game and lose or to never have been allowed to play the game at all?

Steve Harvey just came out and basically said all roads lead to God. I've just talked about this on my page 🤦🏾♂️

“When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense; therefore, take every word at its primary, ordinary, usual, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context, studied in the light of related passages and axiomatic and fundamental truths, indicate clearly otherwise.”-Dr. David L. Christianity is not the truth. Your head is telling you that you know its not the truth. Just let go of your indoctrination. Christianity stole a lot of its lore from Paganism. That is totally true.
I used to follow RagamuffinTV until they started posting a lot of content from Richard Rohr. That's so true. My husband says Noah's ark was a metaphor, Jesus Christ multiplying the fish and bread is not a literal miracle.

I believe the most non-literal books in the Bible are genesis and the revelation. Taking them literally leads to flat earth beliefs and YEC beliefs. I begin to take biblical history as literal since Abraham.
Multiplying fish and bread is a throw back to being in the wilderness when they had manna to eat for 80 years.
@@nikokapanen82 It doesn't lead flat earth beliefs, but YEC beliefs yes. If you believe in both evolution and God's word you have a problem.
@@orthodoxinquirer5693
It most certainly leads to flat earth beliefs as well.
I love the imagery of magical tears creating insta pool.
The 4 hermeneutics are easy to understand.
The literal speaks to deeds, allegory to faith,
The moral how to act, anagogy our destiny.
All are based on the literal sense. The other three are called "spiritual senses" and engage respectively faith, charity and hope.
I think Chuck Missler said it best. When asked if he took the Bible Litteraly or Metaphorically, he said: "I take it Seriously".
thanks guys for this series, its been very helpful to me. God bless guys :)

The list of interpretive methods reminds me of Origin, where he wasn't talking genre, but layers of meaning.
And Origin believed the allegorical or "spiritual" was the most important and highest interpretation.

1:07-1:12 That’s not the emphasis of the text. It’s a modern apologetic obsession to counter opposition to established orthodoxy. The text simply says that Jesus has replaced the roman emperor and foreshadows Pentecost.

We need to interpret the bible seriously. Was that a version of stretch armstrong?

The early church had a different understanding of Hell than we do today. I believe the concept of fire is metaphorical, and this has to do with the language being used, but this does not mean that it’s not real.
Either way, Jesus words on hell still stand as potent as ever, hellfire being metaphor or not. Jesus died for the same thing, to save us
But the rich man went to a place full of fire, sometimes we remember some scriptures and forget others
In the end, ALL is revealed.
The Early church had various opinions on this particular subject and were in general much better at discussing with each other than on these forums where everyone tend think their interpretation equals exactly what the bible says and everything else is condemned.
GOD originally created hell for Satan and his demons, its a literal place that's why the rich man asks for water to cool his tongue because fire burns.
Mike, Where did Jesus command anyone to write 27 Books and to call it the NT?

In that question "You will either use the Bible to interpret Jesus or use Jesus to interpret the Bible," I'm reminded of the many times the Scribes, Pharisees, and Saducees tried to trick Jesus with the Law. Each time there's this little laughter in my head. "These people are going to try to trip Him up with the Law. Who do they thing wrote the Law?"
Interesting theory does that mean the monsters in revelation will be very real like Jason and Argonauts or Sinbad movies from years ago or are some things symbolic.
STRETCH ARMSTRONG!!!!!
4:17-4:25 Uh...okay.
P.S.: i don’t think either approach is inherently correct or incorrect.
17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ."
This is telling us that a lot of the law is but a shadow. The reality is Jesus. So again how do we interpret the law. By looking merely at the shadow? Or by looking at Jesus?
Mike how are you? Quick question? Do you believe or preach the imminent Rapture?
Literally clicked this vid to see if you were actually wearing a t-shirt
Jesus said to search the scriptures, in them you think you have eternal life, but they testify of ME!
That's it! What is the Bible if not the unveiling of Jesus our God
People need to learn the difference between a literal and a literalistic interpretation of the Bible.
The Jordan t shirt in the thumbnail 😂
The question at the end was “who judges between us?” Answer: Jesus. (poking a little at your argument here but there are some holes). For example, can Jesus speak today if it isn’t part of the Bible? He is a living, resurrected being correct?
Chuck Missler said he took the Bible seriously.
Yeah first for sure 😁

Jesus sent Peter to catch a fish that had a coin that would pay their taxes, tell me, in the context of the Gospels is this literal?

6:17-6:20 Two things. One: We don’t have the words of Jesus. We have written legends of Jesus. Two: The statement isn’t meant to say that the old testament is all great. It’s meant to connect the dots and establish a winning theme (Creation over empire).
