Psychedelics in Christian Art

- For many years now, people have noticed psychedelic mushrooms throughout religious art. Often in scenes from the Bible. In fact, across medieval artworks, you’ll seem to find these “mushrooms” everywhere. Like the Plaincourault fresco, that 12th-century wall painting of the Garden of Eden. It’s a bizarre image, the tree of knowledge looks like a giant fungus. Then there are the visions of Hildegard von Bingen with divine cities in the sky and incomprehensible beings that take the appearance of angels. Others are abstract geometric shapes: rings, circlets, and sacred diagrams.
Could artworks like these reveal hidden truths about Christianity and psychedelics? Or is there another explanation? One that’s more rooted in the weird world of medieval illustration. Welcome to Strange Christian Art. This Episode: Psychedelics.
Seems like my previous video on Biblical Demons went down a treat. Glad you all enjoyed it. More religion/mythology content to come! Thank you for 716k subscribers.

I love how medieval artists and Dr. Seuss both draw trees the same way
"Is that a mushroom?" "No, it's a truffula"
might copied the lorax
Dr Seuss was definitely tripping while making the books

I love how there’s a drug dealer in the comments on a video about psychedelics
Hochelaga, whoever you are, this channel is a beautiful ingenious thing! Thank you for helping all of us flex our creative and academic wings! :)
Don't do that shit.
@@gangstalker9 ?
Person: "Can you draw me some trees?"
Artist, just having met St Fungus and received his divine glory: "... Yes... I think so."
yes.
"unanimously rejected by scholars" maybe they were afraid of being 'crucified' by anti-drug people?
@@DopeFox Lol do you think anyone would care if you ate some mushrooms in Medieval days? i think they had more serious concerns… Like not dying at birth…
@beatmeoffbrazy than explain crusaders, witch trials, Spanish inquisitions, and nazis blaming the jews. alot of people did stupid shit because they couldn't mind there own business and had to cast blame on somebody else minding there own business. They also cared so much about pagans following there own religion that they burned down there churches and built there own on the pagan's holy sites and made holidays to convert them easier to christian while also killing the heathens.
Also can't forget pilgrims forcing native Americans to become Christian and the African slaves.
@@DopeFox Haha cute, you sound like me in high school. “Genocide could be avoided by people minding their own business”. For sure. Little late for that advice, but I agree..
I also get the connections that you’re making - Pagans were killed for not worshipping properly, one could draw these connections to psychedelic drugs. Sure, plausible.
My point remains: I don’t think anyone in the middle ages was crusading to stop people from eating trippy field mushrooms. Even indirectly, this is 20th century drug-hysteria logic applied to a totally different time.
I’m so glad you mentioned Hildegard of Bingen. Stories like hers of Christian mystics and their visions fascinate me. I think some others that are worth mentioning are Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Sienna, Margery Kempe, and Teresa of Avila. Some of the visions they describe are wild and full of strange imagery.
I'm with you brother, I also read an art book about Hildegard von Bingen, who made an art called God's Visions in Four Seasons...
Teresa of Avila is my patron saint 😁
I lost it at that angel with a face in his belly
I once met a guy at a party who tried to explain to me that "[shrooms] are meant to be consumed as they have 90% the same DNA as humans". This dude's eyes were also more open than what I would consider normal lol
Almost all species shares 90 percent of their dna lol
they're not meant to be consumed, we've just been eating them for so long that we've probably evolved an affinity for their effects.
That is the weirdest logic ever. On that basis cannibalism is a must as there is a 100% match.
Anyway, mushrooms don't have anything like that level of correspondence. They kingdom of fungi is more similar to animals than it is to plants (no chloroplast or rigid cell walls), but that's about it.
As someone who illegally poaches and consumes chimpanzees, I agree with that man
@@joekerr5418 pfffffft
When you went on to explain how they were trees, they definitely reminded me of how kids draw trees! Circles or cloud shapes to represent bunches of leaves.
strange how an artist doesn't know how to draw a fucking tree right but everything else is fine
@@DopeFox Just ask yourself, 1: what does any artist learn to draw well first... people. 2: What does an audience need to connect with the most in a piece of art... people. And as for that main church picture of adam and eve with the tree of knowledge, the humans don't exactly look convincing either, although more true to life than the tree.
@@oasischris1556how
On the topic of Bingen and Bosch's vision, I think people often forget it is the *brain* that creates psychedelic experiences and not the substances. While people typically need chemicals to disrupt their brain into making them, people have been having "soul revealing" (etymological meaning of psychedelic) visions for all of human history. These tend to be less fractal/complex, but it's worth noting we don't need mushrooms to experience altered states of consciousness
And then there's people like me who are mentally ill. Visual hallucinations occur due to many brain diseases. Wouldnt be surprised if at least some of these guys were also Schizophrenic
@@sparklesparklesparkle6318 Take care of my brain?
microdosing LSD cured my PTSD, it literally healed my brain.
2 weeks in i no longer had triggers. I had PTSD for about 3 years before that.
LSD also stopped me smoking weed everyday and allowed me to tackle my depression.
Psychedelics can be tools which help people heal.
Also can make things look funny
Great comment!
Having ADHD/austism helps me to have psychedelic experiences... I have an insanely active imagination, as in I’m able to picture things extremely vividly, I have quite detailed dreams, and I have synesthesia! It can be a lot sometimes, but I love what my brain is capable of. It was viewed as a disadvantage by my teachers/parents/peers, but I always loved it. It felt like a precious gift.
Once I was able to experiment with psychedelics, I was made certain that those qualities WERE in fact gifts, and it made me so certain that our dreams & our spirituality are all connected. I felt so close to “god” & so loved by them. I just know the stuff we see behind our eyes (or with our third eyes) is spiritually important. Psychedelics just enhance that which we already know.

Been on a hochelaga binge lately. Can't get enough of this type of content and the way it's delivered. Major props mr hochelaga
I'm happy this channel came back!
For my explanation, in my own perspective, many artist interprets several times about "the Tree", Bosch's Tree in The Garden of Earthly Delights is a dragon's blood with some grapes and leaves that look like bread(symbolizes the blood and body of Christ), and medieval culture is some what weird, based on Faith than Reason, like some of Stange Christian Arts, mostly they took something from the ancient and converted into their Christian Culture(eg. Three Headed Jesus and Hellmouths) and some are misinterpreted about animals like elephants carrying a castle, I could respect the Medievals though and their minds are now tried to evolved to Renaissance...For Hildegard von Bingen, I read in the books and art about God's Visions in Four Seasons before this video is release, according to the book she's a abbess and mystic.
Always happy to see a post from your channel. One of the best on RUclips. Great concept and very informational. Ty for uploading as much as you can
The Hildegard von Bingen diagram reminds me of Hilma af Klint’s abstract spiritist art. Those women might have had a lot in common, despite living centuries apart.
Psychedelics can help you in lotta ways. It helped me for depression and made me aware of my behaviour and childhood trauma.
Similarly Psychadelics can also worsen a lot of mental illnesses significantly.
Whilst useful to some, they shouldn't be spoken of as some kind of miracle drug

Considering why biblical angels look the way they are, psychedelics probably played a huge role in their manifestation.

No, these are false teachings made to misled people, bible says to keep a sober mind.
"Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
@@dawn8086 the Bible also makes mention of the Eucharist....a Greek festival in which early Greek Christians participated in which there is historical and archeological evidence that they indeed used psychedelics.....also psychedelic states don't need drugs to happen, you can induce a psychedelic state all on your own through meditation or deep worship as well, I am a Christian and have definitely experienced a psychedelic state during a deep worship session in church.
You do a fantastic job of taking an attention-grabbing question, and using it to dive into the authentic traditions of medieval Christian art. Excellent work!
I'm actually knitting a small tablecloth from a shawl pattern inspired by the Bigen illustration you showed! That's Scivias I.6, The Choirs of Angels, but the designer just called it Scivias. Great video as usual. Any chance you could do a video on insular celtic art. I feel like it doesn't get enough love on RUclips.
Great video as always. If anybody is interested in going down the rabit hole of pschedelics in religion, I suggest reading 'The Immortality Key: The secret history of the religion with no name' by Brian Muraresku. All books on the subject do reach slightly, but this one is extremely well researched, and focus' on Ancient Greece and how their 'secret recipe' might have influenced the newer religions.
Great book definitely recommend
I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area, I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free, the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did

Funny you mentioned symptoms of shroom ingestion and then talk about St. Hildegard. She was afflicted by bouts of illness a lot, with episodes of these visions coming to her during several of these.
Literal fever dreams.
Yup not to mention the common occurrence of fungi like ergot often growing on wheat and barley which would find its way into bread and man other baked goods that medieval people relied on for food, and some of these fungi had psychedelic properties as well....when one thinks of it this way, that possibly our medieval ancestors were just ingesting fungi all the time, many of the weird myths, legends, visions and religious beliefs that were around back then made sense.
For all we know Dragons probably came about because some medieval peasant ate some bread that was made from wheat infected by ergot and started tripping out

Always super excited to see a new video!
I do like your videos, very much... I've been fascinated with mystical / medieval art ever since I saw pictures of alleged sea creatures, as a child, the 'Sea Bishop' especially... One psychedelic influence that might have been quite common, and grossly misunderstood in the absence of formalized science, is moulds in food or in dwellings, due to poor conditions of upkeep and little environmental control. Somebody quite devout, squirreling themself away in an unhealthy environment or undertaking extremes of diet / consumption as a part of their faith, might be given to hallucinations and delirium which they then record as divine enlightenment.
I wish that this series on weird Christian art and book never ends

Animals in medieval paintings mostly looked like that because the painter hadn’t seen the actual animal; they were only described it by someone else. There’s a lot of messed up elephants for this reason.
You're correct. The Alhambra in Spain - the Lion sculptures are comical. It would be more apt / believable if the description was that these represent Jaguars 😏
I kinda thought that the medieval artist themselves took psychedelics due to how strange the illustrations were.

I have nothing constructive to add to these comments. But, I'm loving these Christian Art episodes (or ancient art in general). Here's to hoping that 2023 is the year you go over 1M subs. 😃
Hildegard von Bingen and several other of the better known Christian mystics likely had one or more Neurological conditions, or Synesthesia. I have what would have been called 'visions' in an earlier age, but I'm Epileptic. Before I was diagnosed in my early 30s my experiences were extremely difficult to explain, especially because my seizures just look like I'm daydreaming from the outside. Unless you knew I was having a seizure, you wouldn't know it was actually happening.

great video, as an art history student I appreciate your methodical and respectful approach to this topic that is absolutely worth talking about even though some scholars would scoff and call it nonsense. medieval art is super interesting and the iconography is fascinating. I love bestiaries but my personal favourites are the strange little creatures that crawl in the margins of illuminated books. I can see why someone who had never seen an elephant but had heard rumours about it would draw it like that, but nothing can explain why so many knights are fighting giant snails (and losing).
for those interested in the very history of psychedelics in ancient religion, look to the east and much earlier in our history, in a region that would later be called Persia. it is pretty much accepted that people in this region consumed ayahuasca, an extremely potent psychedelic, and that it was in some way related to spirituality. the cult of the sun god Marduk left interesting petroglyphs where the god is represented as a humanoid with a head made of concentric circles, rays, or some shape that looks an awful lot like the ayahuasca plant. I’m not saying that’s what it is, but it is a theory that serious experts in the field consider at least possible.
in any case, this art is may be from where originates the tradition of putting a nimbus to signal divinity or sainthood. this part of the world is also where the proto-indo-european mythology would take the form of Zoroastrianism which is understood as somewhat of an indirect ancestor to the abrahamic faiths. in this way, christian art just might have some links to psychedelics after all, but not so directly.
