    Mini Biography for Jimmie Rodgers
    Date of Birth - 18 September 1933,
    Camas, Washington, USA
Birth Name - James Frederick Rodgers
Smooth, folksy, honey-voiced singer Jimmie Rodgers' career would never be the same after a December 1, 1967 altercation left him partially disabled. Remembered for a few singing hits of the late 50s and early 60s, Jimmie managed to prevail but at a much slower pace.
He was born September 18, 1933 in Camas, Washington, a few months after beloved Country Music Hall of Fame singer Jimmie Rodgers (known as "The Singing Brakeman") died of consumption. They were not related but perhaps Jimmie's mother, a piano teacher who often played for silent movie houses, was inspired to name her son after the country legend as the same exact spelling of the first name occurred. His mother taught the musically-inclined Jimmie the piano and guitar. He formed bands and served at one time with the U.S. Air Force. He later was discovered on Arthur Godfrey's talent show and was signed by Roulette Records, an offshoot of RCA.
In the late 50s, Jimmie's easy folk-pop style and melodic renderings caught on fast. A wonderful alternative to the rock-and-roll, he found a #1 overnight hit with the song "Honeycomb" in 1957 and followed things up with a handful of "top 10" singles including "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again," "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," "Secretly," "Waltzing Matilda" and "Are You Really Mine." Signed by Roulette Records, he severed ties with the record company in 1960 after a money dispute and signed with Dot Records the following year.
Jimmie became a popular commodity during these years, touring with the likes of Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Frankie Avalon. He made TV appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "American Bandstand" to the delight of his fans, and even parlayed his singing fame into a brief movie career with lead performances in the remake of The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come (1961), in which he co-starred with Disney's Luana Patten, and the war drama Back Door to Hell (1964). Both were only mildly received.
Things looked very promising with a TV summer series "The Jimmie Rodgers Show." Not an electric performer by any stretch, the good-looking singer with the trademark cleft chin had a natural and easygoing charm that appealed to the masses. In 1967, however, right after signing with A&M, Jimmie's life and career changed forever. In December of 1967, he was stopped by an off-duty police officer on the freeway after leaving a party. The details are sketchy and the incident remains a mystery, but Jimmie somehow suffered a severe skull fracture as a result of the encounter and claims the police brutally attacked him. The police report maintains that Rodgers was intoxicated and hurt himself when he stumbled and fell. Jimmie later sued the City of Los Angeles and settled out of court. His life, however, would never be the same.
Jimmie attempted a comeback of sorts, appearing regularly on "The Joey Bishop Show" in 1969, but after three brain surgeries he still suffered from convulsions and had trouble with balance. A portion of his face also sagged and he did not like appearing on camera for that reason. Forced into retirement in later years, he devoted himself to religion and performed only on occasion in the concert venue. Some of his more popular songs can still be heard on commercials. He was married three times and has five children.

My pop, who died last year at 89, often asked, "Do we sing because we're happy? Or are we happy because we sing?" A Depression-era kid and WWII vet, he'd seen hard times. He'd repeat that Paul the apostle said singing --- the right kind of songs -- is a way to be filled with God's spirit. We shouldn't rob ourselves and our children by "letting others do the singing," or by letting our songs be dictated by the dark side of our culture. Jimmie's songs are real treasures with great power. Thanks!

How magical this all was: Jimmy Durante & Jimmie Rodgers! To be able to tune into talent like this - wow - was my childhood blessed! There was an ease, an innocence & joy to all of this that has gone from American life. It is wonderful to revisit this special brief era that gave us heart & hope before all the killings & beatings & bloodshed transformed the magic into the tragic. God bless you, Jimmie. You sang for all of us - and still do.

I was just a little kid in 1959 -- but I remember some of it, as you say. Imagine our fathers' often unspoken surprise and disgust. They thought they'd gone off to war to get such things out of the way for their own children. How little they imagined what the big shots and whiz kids in D.C. had cooked up for all of us. Even so, while the life we had known seemed to disintegrate beneath our feet -- as long as he could -- Jimmie Rodgers kept hopefully singing on about our common hopes.

I remember Jimmie Rodgers like I rember Little Richard or Pat Boone. Jimmy Durante with Jimmie on the video & the first time I've seen them together like this is on RUclips, thx4 postin'. I had a few favs by Jimmie when I was a teenager like Secretly. As an adult I don't tune Jimmie in much as there is so much more to R&R than Bimbombay, I have to make way for Eminem, Lady Ga Ga, Nsync & The Backstreet Boys so I limited myself to my real favorites from over the yrs. OK!

@WALRU11 "Jimmie. You sang for all of us - and still do." is so very true.
Will we, in our respective countries ever see such an era again - I am uncertain about that.
Luckily, we still have those kinescopes and film to perhaps re-assert those thoughts and ideals that you so eloquently describe in your comment!!!.

I love the name "Tucumcari" My mom lived in N.M. as a girl and my grandma was a cook for the miners in the town of Tucumcari. It's not there anymore. (Yes, it is. see below for details! LOL!)
(I've been thinking about this after another person kindly took the time to update me on the fact that Tucumcari is alive and well and still in New Mexico! It was my grandmother who told me that back in the 80's, and _she_ was at least 80 at the time - she was born in 1898 - and she said, "'It's' not there anymore...." but the "it" she was talking about was the *_mine_* (there were several in the area) that she was the cook for around the time she met my grandpa Lambert, - whose grandfather, by the way, was Henry Lambert and built the St. James Hotel in Cimarron. It's a beautiful place purported to be haunted by several ghosts. If you fancy ghosts and haunted places, check out "St. James Hotel, Cimarron, NM" in any search engine. It'll give you details of this beautiful hotel where some real "names" back in the 1800's - both Outlaws like Billy the Kid, Frank James, etc. and law enforcers like Wyatt Earp, and Wild West "stars" like Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley all stayed there. It's a beautiful place. There are even some videos about it here on RUclips! Thanks for reading this. Sorry it's so long! Sue

Nick Plaskon Really? When my mom went to visit the St. James Hotel (that her grandfather built) in Cimarron in 1989, she wanted to visit Tucumcari, too, but couldn't because it wasn't listed on her map. She was sad about it then, and passed 3 years after. If you say it's there, I believe you. Did you like it? I still want to visit the hotel my great-great grandfather built but am hesitant because it's supposedly haunted! So if Tucumcari is there, I have another reason to go visit! Thanks for your comment!

I'mAFemale,Age45-54 Yes Tucumcari is still there and unless I passed into the Twilight Zone I spent the night there last month on June 13 and June 26. But Tucumcari is not near Cimarron. Cimarron is in Colfax County on US 64 between Raton and Taos. Tucumcari is 165 miles to the southeast of Cimarron on Interstate 40 in Quay County. I would imagine your mom was simply looking at the wrong place on the map for Tucumcari.

I loved his music back in the 60's, his "Just A Closer Walk" is one of the greatest ever recorded. Pure and simple. Then I remember his episode and disappearance when I was just a teenager and wondered for years what happened to him. Not much really came out for a long time. Now with the internet I found whaevert could be said about the story, and this really caps it off. Thanks so much for posting.

Well said, 4+. But it was perhaps less the "big shots & whiz kids" that brought us down, & more the old guard upset by what the new fresh young minds envisioned for America & the world. We were betrayed by old line regulators who trampled the reformers, killing our dreamers & visionaries, to sustain a corrupt system of socio-economic exploitation they'd put in place since the rise of corporate titans in the Industrial Age. So it was a pleasure to briefly have hope & harmony via Jimmy's songs
