Interesting, using the printed fixtures. I've used wood to build bending jigs and fixtures. Wood only gets burnt from tacking, but one can wet the wood to lessen it to a degree. Bit smokey, but works well and can hold up to dozens of builds. Anyone printing this could, when possible, grind back the plastic at the tube junctions enough that the plastic doesn't burn as bad. Could also try a bit of aluminum tape once ground back as extra protection. Could be worth it by extending the number of builds one gets per fixture. Tube bender is easy to build with a small pulley wheel. And small tube like that, one could bend it around a small piece of metal or plastic pipe or wood dowel and just there fingers. Neat idea. Look forward to seeing how it goes. Thanks! Bert the Weldor
I get not wanting too many people going at once in the build along with you trying to keep up and help everyone along but I think you should consider putting everything back up with a new video for an into once you have it all done all the kinks worked out for sure. This seems like it would be an extremely great way to introduce people to fab their own chassis with you having all the templates and everything already completed and videos for building it and doing the detail work you will put on it. Once it is done it will be like a blueprint to building a full custom truck with all the design work done and tutorials available for the fab work. Seems like a great resource and it would be a shame for it to vanish forever after the week is up.
I wish you and those that join you luck with this venture . Personally I am not quite ready to use tubing and brazing to build chassis. For me at 65 plus years of age I am still messing around with 3 mm flat aluminium rails. Currently on the trail at a distance of 20 feet my existing flat rails projects look ok to my eyes. I hope you all get your projects to a stage where you can get them dusty/ muddy. ❤ from Australia.

"Grinder and paint...." as the saying goes! LOL!!! :) You can get the fit nano accurate all you want. Welding it well is completely different. As another saying goes..." You can lead a horse to water...." 😁👍
@@forrestcrabbe Yes. Not sure how grinding and/or cutting a work piece has anything to do with ones welding ability? Wasn't meaning to be unfriendly. Just thought it was a bit funny to think one skill has to do with another. 👍
@wingnutbert9685 the better the fit, the better the weld. Ask a pipe welder how important a good fit is. You are not allowed to grind yer welds pretty on a pipeline. A perfect weld is a must, no inclusions, no undercuts, and no grinding. A good fit is one of the most important aspects of welding 🤘y'all have a badass day🤘🍻🤘
@@forrestcrabbe For sure. Absolutely no augment on that. I guess my point, more correctly was you can have the fit perfect, but if all you can do is a bird poop weld, that fit-up ain't gonna help. LOL! I've worked with both. Great eye for fit, welds like Stevie Wonder after two pots of coffee. Or, could weld the crack of dawn shut with a battery and a coat hanger but couldn't cut something to fit even if you drew the line for him. 😆I guess my point is having both makes the build and the product easier. And a good weldor can make up for a bad fitter, but not the other way around. (And of course, there's a big diff between pipe fitting and welding and these little things. ) 😄😁👍 Hell, I'm just happy to see someone actually hand making something and not printing it!
This sounds amazing. I've got some portal axles I swapped out of a Phoenix, so it looks like this is going to be where they end up. Thanks for putting in the work!
Good stuff Josh. Fabrication is something I've been thinking about getting into within RC. Caged vehicles like rock bouncers and others similar are like works of art. So again, good stuff and thank you for sharing. I look forward to the Vanquish Bomber release. 4WS or not it's going to be a win. Kidding kidding. Have a good week man, cheers!!!
I wish I had a 3d printer! I'm a welder by trade and really want to build a moon buggy! But as you say the design takes a long time, I'm going to build one out of stainless tube though, Dom is a great choice as I have built some bumpers and other stuff with it...
So when are we getting a video of the first build-along truck 😆 Would be nice if there were cage/buggy jigs for a less weirdness build, maybe I can design one some day
I don’t know if I missed it or not, but what is the price on this build along? I’m very interested in joining as I’ve been doing rc fabrication for about 6 years now building different cages, bumpers, and whatnot. I’ve only ever built 2 full tube chassis’ and I am interested in building more of them.
I would love to do this, iv been dying to get into real fab in the RC realm. But with family and work obligations there's no way i could do it at the build along pace. I really hope you make this available for the future.
So we have to print these all off or you're going to have them in a package because if that's the case I don't have to print them I could possibly build this

Shoot, i don't have a 3d printer. Have a tube buggy build going on SBG that i just used the old eyeball check to make sure it was close to being the same.
I’m very interested! I’ve tried a couple times to build a buggy and just can’t get the fit up right. Those jigs will be super helpful! I’m just curious what the buy in is.
Is HF start and a pedal a must for welding these cages? Or will scratch start suffice? I can MiG and get by with stick but iv never even touched a Tig machine before.
I haven’t had a starter TIG in awhile and the one I had was way worse then most of them these days. If you can get about any TIG with HF start, you’ll be better off than I was when I started. It’s really all about your budget.
Specs of the full-size buggy were not posted, so the design is a visual representation made to fit the size of the vehicle I wanted to build. How it would exactly scale in comparison isn’t something I could accurately calculate with the info available.

Great video and nice group project build
This looks like great fun. I can fabricate I just don’t know that I can afford this right now.
If a person buys in will they have access indefinitely to the jigs? Like 6 months down the road they want to build another?
You’ll have the files saved, so yes. They just aren’t to be used for commercial use per the Creative Commons license.
So we have to print these all off or you're going to have them in a package because if that's the case I don't have to print them I could possibly build this
You have to print the fixtures yourself. The package is just the digital media needed to print.
I want to do this build along but I’m afraid I won’t be able to actually get the tubes bent and welded in the same time frame but I’m gonna try.
Is the jig going to be available after the build? I didn't know about it until i saw your rig when i was watching your runs at the comp. I watched older videos to see how to build it. Would like to try to build one myself.

Where's the links for the products. I'm looking for the tubing bender off etsy
I’ll add more of the links soon. I have been working on putting everything in the discord for the participants first.
When is the 1/18 or 1/24 scale vanquish rigs coming out?..😁
What do you think about using ar44's on this chassis? I have a set of capra axles but was thinking about doing a sporty with them. Lol
Probably not a good fit as this type of chassis is best suited for axles with a BTA steering servo location. It is best suited for F10 portals.
Is HF start and a pedal a must for welding these cages? Or will scratch start suffice?
I can MiG and get by with stick but iv never even touched a Tig machine before.
A lift TIG will do, the HF start is just a bonus. My first machine was a lift TIG and I built a lot of tube with it!
I want to do this but I don’t have a 3d printer yet
I want to do this, but leaving AZ next week so won't have access to the metal shop until the fall. Better to wait for the build on your own?
Probably so Scott, your timing will likely work out well for that.
Is there a way to scale this for SCX6 sizing?
Hell yeah, brother! I love Mullet.
Maybe you covered it and I missed it, but what size tubing did you use on this project?
3/16 x .035wall
Thanks
What size DOM do you use?
If this is an April Fool’s this is got to be the best or worst one all in one.
I've done a bit of brazing. Never welded. Any recommendations on a starter Tig welding set up?

Matt, I get paid Friday. Well, now i am just confused. Sold out? Thanks.
Do you think this chassis would support the Capra 4ws?
It wasn't designed around that servo position. It's made to specifically use BTA servos with an offset axle.
@@HarleyDesignsInc well I’ll have to follow along and hopefully I can buy the parts needed in time. Waiting for tomorrow!
Man I was busy at work all day and once I was able to see about buying into the project, it shows sold out. 😢

Yes, after the build along is over. Many of the files get developed as we progress as a group. Once it’s done, I’ll drop them all at once for all of you.
Awesome I appreciate it been buying your power wagon parts they are killer cool and fit perfectly
Why do you not like mig welding them?
MIG welds never look good on a RC chassis. I see them done all the time, they just don't look nearly as good as brazing or TIG welding.
@HarleyDesignsInc I've got the stuff to braze them but I wonder how strong it really is? Will it withstand impacts on a basher cage or barrel rolls and flips and all of the rough stuff
nope most couldn't duct tape a connection ...this and most only help people like me........i can weld, lathe, mill, and bend
Maybe I missed it, but how long after the files are released will the build along start?
Pretty much right away. But there will be a delay for people to order materials, laser cutting, printing etc.
Gotcha, that’s what I was curious about.
Wow I was surprised to see it sold out when I remembered earlier today. Hope to catch the files later on.
