I've always loved Caleb (for OH so many reasons, but one of them is...) because he makes it starkly clear what he values and what he views as undeserving of his consideration... Moreover, he does so innately, with HOW he says something and not necessarily what he says. (Spoilers for the campaign and Calebs character arc incoming. So if you haven't watched C2 The Mighty Nein... WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING? lmao... Watch campaign 2 ya Nerds! lol. It's amazing!) *Ahem*... so to continue what I was saying... My original statement may have confused some people so I'll explain what I mean. 1. Caleb views himself below EVERYONE else... it takes an entire campaign for him to value himself at all and even when he FINALLY learns to love himself as his friends do... it's still a struggle for him. A process he'll have to work at for a life time. 2. Because of his low opinion of himself, he tends to see the good in people he comes to love, while meeting their negative qualities both sober and with kindness and understanding. 3. Because of His active consideration of other people as aforementioned... when he speaks of those people and things he values, he speaks with such poetry, wisdom and grace... not because this comes naturally to him (and to be clear he IS an actual genius with the Keen Mind feat in game, but that ISN'T what makes him so charismatic)... What writes that undeniably poignant poetry behind his lips is birthed from his mind constantly considering, weighing, and making a home in his head and heart for these precious people (found family), places, and things he holds dear. He's thought these words and philosophy about (especially his compatriots) hundreds of times, silently, to himself... obsessively... so when a time comes where he must vocalize his opinions on something he holds dear, he does so brilliantly and with bright, lustrous, vigor... with passion and a clear intent. Sharp... like a knife, a scalpel... and kind like the hand of a chef cooking for their own family. 4. In contrast to those precious things which Caleb allows to become the background radiation within his mind... The other side of the coin is that Caleb is ALSO a deeply broken individual... even after he's allowed himself, his friends, and his lover to glue him back together again... ... So the things that must be said or considered involving things outside his circle of trust or taste, he does with a cold and calculating, sober logic. Bluntness rather than the considerate scalpel he uses with what he loves. Caleb is such a complex Character, and is a thousand percent who I MOST identified with and felt most deeply for within the campaign (Nott and Jester following closely behind of course). He (Caleb) flawlessly reverberates between Poetic kindness while acknowledging the terrible nature of the world he's lived... and Blunt and pragmatic dissonance, when he addresses that which comes into his peripheral on a daily, unavoidable basis. Liam created a truly wonderful, deep, and realistic character. Oh... and an addendum... ... To I'm sure at least some of your surprise, I believe Liam said (either on an episode of between the sheets, or during the M9 Campaign wrap-up episode) that his characters alignment started somewhere around Neutral evil (Which VERY much fits the starting line for Caleb) The beauty of Liam's talent here, is that evil alignments played by a master player (Which Liam certainly is) with an understanding of philosophy and actual lived experience with trauma, aren't necessarily what many people are used to with... 'Hollywood evil'... The mustache twirling, baby eating, murder hobo variety many of us who play D&D would see from an inexperienced player (in game and in life to clarify). Caleb's unspoken (in-game) neutral evil status... and likewise his whole 'Nein-hells-bent' on revenge, self hatred, and willingness to cross an unspeakable line and break the entire world to save two people (his parents) if it came down to it... ...A sad man, with a thousand yard stare, willing to sacrifice a great many other peoples very existence to tilt the karmic scales back in his direction, if even for a brief... comforting... moment.. (He's owed it after all... just this once, he'd tell himself) ... A wizard, Self interested and introverted in a way that the 'ends' for him, and the moralizing over atrocities committed in the service TO those ends... would to him, certainly justify the means. (and THEN a tiny... scared... goblin girl,... (Not brave... just Nott the Brave...) ...A goblin girl With pointy teeth and a terrified demeanor Caleb recognized all too well from his reflection in every puddle and shop window he's passed... A soul just as broken as he is reached out her hand, (Took a chance) ...and to Calebs credit... (And surprise...) He took it... he took it and hasn't let go since it could have ended differently... ...But he found Jester... and Nott... and Essek (Oh you classically Hot boi... How I love thee... lol)... his entire crew sculpted him into a headspace where he evolved and ended the campaign as more of a true neutral character with a heart of gold. To further steel my point, we DID catch a glimpse of the path Caleb could have walked much more vigorously had he not been so loved by his comrades... In the underground Hall at the Cerberus Assemblies secret research facility... when he used Dunamancy to crush, without hesitation, several guards from vibrant life into a pile of easily discarded flesh and metal. What Ended up happening (To every critters delight), was Caleb never walked that path of pure revenge. he chose to live for those he cared for (and revenge was just a byproduct). In fact, he had such a profound shift in alignment (And an EARNED SHIFT mind you... not just a cheap heel-turn) that that broken wizard was a key component in turning what very well could have become a powerfully evil nemesis they'd have been forced to put down... into a friend... a member of his found family... a lover... perhaps the absolute love of his life. This is... no small feat to Uno-reverse card a goddamned villain into someone who'd lay down their life for you.... Yet he did so... splendidly. *sigh*.... lol. I love this Character, sorry for the rant. If anyone was unsure about how they felt about Caleb I DO hope my insight could grant a bit value into your own. Wishing all you other critters a wonderful day, and Thank you Deelusi for the awesome clip.
As someone whose favorite character in CR is Caleb Widogast I wholeheartedly agree with all of this. Watching his arc has been very cathartic for me as I myself went through an experience that broke me a bit like Caleb. if you'll forgive the over share, my mother nearly had me committed with how bad it got. While my breaking point was nowhere near as bad as Caleb's. To completely betray yourself and the person you wanted to be scars you deeply. Alas, I am not nearly as able or willing to accept the help of others as a certain hobo wizard. Even so, as I wallowed in my guilt and self loathing, I found some reprieve in watching Caleb succeed where I could not. Here's hoping his journey can serve as something of a guide on my own. However if I can take one positive from what happened to me, something you alluded to in this wonderfully eloquent comment. Seeing myself as the worst person alive gave me infinitely greater compassion for everyone else. Something I am grateful for, I only wish I hadn't had to fail so tremendously to attain it.
I watched this about a year ago when it came out randomly in my recommended. I don’t know if you’ll ever see this but thank you for introducing me to Critical Role. I had never seen anything about it and this was my first experience. I’m caught up in campaign three and I’m on the Vokodo arc in campaign two at the moment. This was a brilliant animation and made me super interested in this wonderful corner of the internet
For being the smartest and second most charismatic person among the group, Caleb could've maybe put together a slightly better legal defense for The Mighty Nein.
