    I feel like a lot of people ask "where will musical theatre go after Hamilton?" but the more appropriate question is "where will musical theater go after Great Comet" for a lot of the reasons in the video... Even if another show wins the Tony, Great Comet shows a complete change not only in staging, but in musical composition and story structure. Dave Malloy is absolutely incredible, and I think he deserves all the recognition for this show because it's just absolutely beautiful. But, being a realist, I doubt it will win as many Tonys as I feel it deserves.

    The Great Comet was incredible. Maybe the best musical I've seen. Every part of it, every single part, that went into making that piece of art, from the book, the set design, the acting, the signing, the lighting, the stage direction, the risks it took, was taken to the next level. It was unorthodox, but it was also, as you said, revolutionary and brought musical theater to a whole new level! I'm sad it didn't win the Tony, but it will go on to do great things! -Jess

    I want this show to win so badly it makes me squirm. I want musical theatre to grow in this direction. I want this show to live forever. This show has changed how I look at art. This show has become such a big part of my heart. I want everything and more for this show.

      Nicole Phillips same!!!!! I know that it's not a technically perfect show, but the changes that it's made are so exciting to me and it winning best musical would validate the existence of this kind of show and more weird experimental off Broadway shows could come to Broadway

    I like DEH, but Comet is magical. Like DEH is just filler song after filler song. The composers had a few good songs (I.e the beginning of Act 1) and was like "shit what do we do." Would I see the show? Yes. Would I go out of my way to see it? Probably not. As for Comet. Hell yes!

    Mmmm then again, in 2004 "Avenue Q" was the revolutionary/experimental/groundbreaking option, not "Wicked" which, sure, was grandiose & legendary but it was a pretty standard big, flashy musical.

    my bet is that deh wins over great comet. deh is la la land, great comet is moonlight- while there's a chance that great comet could win, deh is so formulaic in that fan-pleasing contemporary musical way that usually guarantees a win (except for those rare moonlight upsets). wish the Tonys would prove me wrong, though.

    Damn, I never noticed the lack of rhyming in Great Comet. I don't even know how I couldn't have no9toce something as big as that, but when you mentioned that I actually have to pause the video and mentally go through the songs I remembered the lyrics for and see if they rhymed. Blew my mind.

    I think DEH will win, however I would probably be most pleased if Great Comet won for many of the same reasons you mentioned here. Also, I just listened to Come From Away today, and it was the only show from this season that kept me completely enthralled and engaged throughout the entire listening experience, even more so than Comet. Maybe that's just due to it's relatively short length IDK, but I do think it's a phenomenally written and composed show.

    Great Comet was the first musical I saw on Broadway, and nothing has ever topped it for me, (except in comedy, Book Of Mormon has my heart there). I sat next to the middle area so I got the shakers directly handed to me by Marya, I got to see almost everything, and it still has my heart. The actors were incredible and it was so emotionally driven... I cant even describe my emotions about it

    made me sad it didn't win... but ppl will be listening to and performing "Great Comet" years from now when "Dear Evan Hansen" will have lost its meaning because it's so pop culture and, really to me, so yesterday already. and I'm in my 50s!

    I can't wait to see this show! From what I've seen, it looks like such an innovative production and it's such a shame that it didn't win the Best Musical Tony (though it did win others). I agree with your points about why Tony voters typically choose the category and I think they went with the "safer" choice with DEH. Fun fact about your comment about the lack of traditional rhyming scheme: much of the text was taken DIRECTLY from Tolstoy and wasn't adapted to rhyme because David Malloy wanted to honor the source text. Love hearing your commentary!

    I guess my favorite change between the two is just how much more close to the performance it sounds. From the door sounds, to some longer pauses at times, I just love it. I am curious though as to why Dave made it where "The Great Comet of 1812" starts with the "sleigh" of "Pierre & Natasha" instead of splitting the track during the multiple measures of intro

  • @greenqueenjp
    @greenqueenjp 7 лет назад +1

    Oscars still tend to go safe. They go to dramas rather than blockbusters, but they go to generally pretty safe stories rather than groundbreaking ones. Look at the year Crash won over Brokeback Mountain, or when Ordinary People beat Raging Bull, or Dances With Wolves beating Goodfellas. The La La Land vs. Moonlight race was tight and La La Land was predicted to win precisely because the old straight white dudes who largely make up the Academy were scared of the waaaay more deserving Moonlight - it's one of the reasons that its shock win was so monumental. The other obviously being that they read out the wrong name.
    Sorry, this got very snobby.

    God, watching this after all the recent drama is disheartening. They had a bright future ahead of them. But then they were fucking robbed at the Tonys and then they were near closing so they tried to bring in Mandy Patinkin but that made people so fucking angry and Oak left and Mandy backed out and Great Comet may still close.

    DEH is young adult fiction set to an unremarkable score and I will never understand the hype. 'Great Comet' is exactly what you said - a work of art. I hope it gets the life it deserves in international productions since the Broadway production was clubbed to death by the Twitterverse by people who had no affiliation with the production :(

    Also just want to add, though I loved the staging, it is not as new and inventive as people give it credit for. Hal Prince did this kind of thing with Candide in 1973, and others have done it too. Not specifically what was done with Great Comet, but it's not the first or only time we've seen this kind of staging (which isn't to take away from it either, just saying, for the sake of history).

  • @user-go1fl4ox2q

    Can we not put my two favorite musicals (comet and DEH) against each other? this has to be one of the only tony discourses that’s been lasting way past the tonys.

    I saw the show back to back once on the night show once on the matinee in that order and it is the most amazing show absolutely ever I saw it and dear Evan Hansen in the same day and the people he said DEH is a better show I laugh at for how little they can see of its revolutionary nature and how amazing the cast is not only physically with all the flights of stairs but also you know they are great people// first video I've seen from this channel absolutely loved it subscribed!

    • @Agent160FTW
      @Agent160FTW 7 лет назад +2

      I'm Norwegian and haven't seen any of the musicals this year, but I've listened a lot to all the Cast Recordings and personally I'm still one of those people rooting for Dear Evan Hansen to win Best Musical. I do agree that it's not necessarily the best show this year because I find a lot to love about both Come from away and Great Comet, it's just that Dear Evan Hansen is the musical that speaks most to me personally. With that said I absolutely agree that Great Comet is revolutionary because it's a musical where everything from the types of voices to orchestrations to staging to the structure of the songs is different from anything else and I would be really pleased to see Great Comet win because I do think it's the most impressive and special musical of the year and the musical that most of all shows a new perspective on musical theatre. For me what elevates Dear Evan Hansen though is that while I can easily see it's flaws and I do think it's a quite traditional musical in many ways (I find both Great Comet and Come from away more groundbreaking), but it's story that to me seems most relevant to the world at this point. We're in a time when there's a growing focus on mental health and where people need to hear that they're not alone, that they'll be found and Dear Evan Hansen is the musical that tells you that. And I really love so many of the songs of Dear Evan Hansen and I love how it portrays parents and make them so real to and how it connects fans so well. So with Great Comet vs Dear Evan Hansen it's a fight between the more traditional musical that excells at being contemporary and a story we need at this moment of time and the completely unique and fascinating musical that doesn't have the same relevancy to the world at the moment, but will be remembered more later on. Sorry for long comment, I just wanted to show how rooting for Dear Evan Hansen doesn't necessarily mean that one doesn't see the revolutionary nature of Great Comet and I never manage to say things in few words.

  • @whatdoyousuppose
    @whatdoyousuppose 7 лет назад +2

    Great Comet is the Sasha Velour of shows this season. Ok, it's kind of a strange comparison but stick with me here. They both have that unique and intellectual bizarre art piece feel to them (and Russian influences lol), and they're both in a group of four where they are the most "out there" of the four (spoiler alert for this season of RuPaul's Drag Race, instead of a top 3 at the finale there will be a top 4). The RPDR finale is in a few weeks so we don't have a definitive answer, and the Tony's are tomorrow, so I'm really curious as to where all of this goes!

    GREAT COMET WAS ROBBED

  • @seanmartin9686
    @seanmartin9686 7 лет назад +3

    As much as I love love love GREAT COMET, I knew HAMILTON was going to walk away with it... and for precisely the reasons you state: HAMILTON was, in its way, "safe" - it had plenty of PR buzz, it's sold out for something like the next century, it's a huge, accessible hit. Never mind that, when you really cut through it, it's a gimmicky show with a score that cant make up its mind if it wants to be pop or Broadway or rap or what. It's sloppy and unfocused and relies on its almost-all minority casting to "sell" a lot of not-there-there. GREAT COMET, on the other hand, is wildly experimental, gorgeous, amazingly written... and so confounding to your usual Broadway theatregoer that I'm actually surprised it's lasted as long as it has. But I've remained a huge defender of this play: whenever Huffington Post does *yet another* article pushing HAMILTON, I make a point of asking when they're going to give the same sprawling coverage to COMET... which will, of course, probably be never. As far as I'm concerned, COMET deserved to win, but HAMILTON took it because the easy pretty girl always scores over the more thoughtful nerd.

    • @seanmartin9686
      @seanmartin9686 6 лет назад

      You're right. My apologies for the confusion. But my feelings about HAMILTON still stand.

    • @gillianhidalgo5525
      @gillianhidalgo5525 6 лет назад

      Sean Martin respectfully disagree with you on hamilton playing it "safe". I think u are a little new to bway considering u thought ham and comet were going against each other but look around, the dancing, the music is very different. The plot is captivating and no one would have thought to make it based on a founding father. Rap has not been done into a musical like this before (except ith which is by lin too). I think u should re check ur opinion. Seeing it live is a whole other feeling. My friend didnt like it with the first time hearing it then saw it live and is a huge fan

    • @seanmartin9686

      HAMILTON was a shoe-in, and I say that based on three decades of following Broadway. If you *really* listen to the score, a lot of it is standard Bway fare. And if you look at the extensive, relentless PR buzz that preceded its move to Bway, there was pretty much no way that show was going to fail. None. It would have been like saying HELLO DOLLY was closing on opening night.
      As for a successful show being based on a founding father, I gather you've never heard of a little thing called 1776?

    WOW I'm one of the first to see this and comment so, Tommy, have you considered reviewing Broadway Backwards and it's copy cat those done by MCC? Flip flopping the gender norm allowing performers do act roles they otherwise would not is art and an expansion of what acting should be, being someone you are not. I'd love to hear your comments on this.

    DEH is beautiful and emotional. Art is supposed to present the human condition and DEH does just that with social anxiety. I started crying the second song because so many people suffer from some from social anxiety but it is not considered a serious challenge or obstacle in most media. Ur just the shy kid or the nervous person. So DEH does that aspect of art so very well. But I did see great comet though and I have to agree with all the praises he made. I think comet should have gotten more awards.

    OK - they've killed the show because of racial sensitivities- Mandy would have been superb. Very sad. Best musical in over forty years.

      Cartreze Tucker Literally 30 seconds into the first song: "Who can curse, cast spells or cry
      Offer your prayers to the unfeeling sky
      Spring will arrive when the winter is done
      And if it's not tomorrow then tomorrow or tomorrow there will be sun"
