- This is multiple offender shipped to me to be looked at. I repaired the DVD portion with several high ESR capacitors and repaired the VCR portion that had a binding cylinder motor rotary transformer.

@8:47 - You never want to use a simple cotton swab to clean the video heads. Cotton fibers can easily become embedded in the fine video head area. A foam-covered cotton swab should always be used to clean video heads.
nice job on fixing this TOSHIBA DVR-620 I recently purchased a Toshiba DVD VHS combo unit the DVD portion of the unit works perfectly but every time I put a VHS tape in instead of eating the tape this time for this particular unit it keeps spitting the tape back out I'm going to pay you whatever it would cost to fix the unit I understand it's been a while since you and I talked sorry it seemed like I was blowing you off the last time you reached out to me about my Magnavox unit but I had some personal stuff going on but now that personal stuff has been taken care by the way I still really enjoy your RUclips channel it's very informative and the information you put out on all of your videos is very informational I bought this unit for $44 with the intention of having you fix it anyway if there was something wrong thank you for your time once again this is Chris
I got a broken VCR recently i just manually rotated The head and it worked perfectly after that

I have the exact same unit. The DVD still works but the VHS half doesn't when I try to load in a VHS the take won't load into position and the unit shuts itself off. Any suggestions you might have to get this unit working again would be appreciated.
Same exact problem! I purchased mine brand new many years ago and have only played VHS tapes maybe 10 times on it. After a few years of not using, I plugged it in and when I loaded a tape it would go in..make the typical noises, then shut itself off. Upon powering back in it simply self-ejects the tape. Tried several tapes, same result.
Oh God I also have the same problem and am hoping to get it going again. Have you guts had any luck fixing yours?
If I can't fix my vcr DVD player combos all the way I just use them as is hoping they will improve over time

I also have a Toshiba DVD VIDEO RECORDER / VIDEO CASSETTE RECORDER DVR630KC. The DVD is fine and the VCR will play but the image is very blurry. Any suggestions for repairing that?
Fix at least over 100 of them and those SMD caps going high ESR is a common issue, I even had some where unit won't power on unless heated up first and put noise on audio on HDMI port. Once high ESR capacitors replaced came back to life and good audio. Also that glue is from bearing Leaking out and drying up.
You also have to align the stator assembly to the phase for switching, I just use a oscilloscope. You can do it eye balling during playback. Some so many have them down pat
One other common issues with the early version is the nylon plastic holding the pinch roller assembly to cam gear break and had it where it jump out and screw up timing even. I just used a revised plastic holder as they don't crack thankfully from a newer revision. They also changed the cam and added a notch to keep tension a from slipping on later revision. Yes they made revisions to these over the years. Thankfully is interchangeable as transport pretty much the same.
Any chance you still work on these. If so is it possible to ship it to you?

Great video. Wonder how that glue got underneath that head assembly. Perhaps either a bad repair job by someone else or a manufacturing screw up?

I have the same model with a very similar issue. Seemingly the reel does not move. The drum head spins very freely, no lag or sticking. I took the case off to watch, when i insert a tape the reel goes around the head and then the reel itself doesn’t move while the drum spins with no problem at all. After about 10 seconds the reel will go back into the cassette and the unit will shut off. When i turn the power back on the tape will eject. When hooked up to a screen a single frame with a lot of static will appear, FF and Rewind do not work. If its not the drum, what else could it be?
I have the same model, dvd works great!, but the vcr play but in the hdmi output is very grainy there's audio and the RF output it's shows standby screen but when hit play screen is black but there is auidio any ideas
I actually like these despite the hate they receive. It lower noise on the input then Panasonic ES series DVD burners I use and the Panasonic processor board goes bad, worked on to many that fail. These are actually more reliable shockingly the DVD recorder processor board is made by Panasonic on these but way more reliable then the early on used on the ES series. Other then that use my JVC Blu ray burner as had good pre amp for transfers, or I used the Magnavox ZV450MW8 when people want DVD instead of SD card for transfers.
The LSI based burners are not that low noise as people claim and use the Sony/liteon drives. I have a 5005 and Go video that uses the LSI based chipset and don't use them anymore as the JVC is much cleaner as far as noise and the Magnavox is better nosie wise then the Panasonic people like to recommend.

I am trying to read the size fuse for this same machine. hardly used it and just decided to quick, first thing tested was fuse and it’s no good. looks like a 250V 1A but can’t verify amp and think it’s a slow burning but nut sure.
got a Radio Shack (of all places) near by. will bring in fuse. if not the fuse. i will donate or e-waste. it’s like brands new- just want to convert some old Vhs to DVD

I have toshiba dvr 620 with a very important movie stuck inside. When I power it up I get continuously flashing lights from the power button as well and the dvd and vcr lights. Is there any chance you still work on these? Ive been looking here locally(oklahoma city) and have not been able to find anyone to fix it. If so is it possible to ship this unit to you?

I have the same model. Any idea what is flashing green power button means? Cassette not going in, like its powered off, and dvd tray also not ejecting. The display in the front has flashing - -:- -

Probably bad capacitor (s) in the power supply circuit.
Very professional. How do you esr the surface mount caps? Do you take them all the way off?
I have the same machine, but for some reason mine has stopped playng back the SLP tapes. the picture flickers during playback and and the audio skips.
Probably the SLP (6hr) video heads are clogged. Try playing a complete good quality 2hr movie from start to finish and see if it helps.
I have this same DVR620KU but my VCR only displays a blue screen. When I hit play, I don't see any commands on the screen. The tape advances but the video on the TV stays a blue screen. If I insert a DVD, it plays fine. Also if the DVD is selected and I insert a VHS tape, the unit does not switch to VCR. Any ideas?
What video output source are you using? Composite, Component, or HDMI?
What were the values of the caps you replaced? I recently got 3 Toshiba DVR630KC units from a friend after their DVD recorder sections failed to record. If the 630 is a rebranded 620 for the Canadian market, I may have hit a goldmine. The VHS parts were mint as he never used that part of the machines. To be fair, I don't actually need the DVD record section as I feed the output directly into a Pioneer 640 or 650, which are vastly superior recorders but I might want to have a unit that I can loan out to friends who want to transfer their own old recordings. ALSO, is there a site with the service manual for these recorders? I have been unable to find one online. Thanks in advance...

Your mode select switch is probably oxidized. That is a classic intermittent symptom.
Hay NorCal what do you use to clean off drive belts that have turned into a tar-like substance that is very messy.
more ACETONE. have a Sony cassette deck with that exact problem. Should be up in the next month or so. Just have to finish the repair.
I've got this machine. VCR runs fine. Dvd ran fine the last time I used it several months ago. Today the DVD will not load, I can hear it spinning with "Loading" displayed and a little click at a regular intervals like 6-8 seconds. (To me it sounds like something is sticking) Eventually the error displays "disc error - please eject the disc - playback feature may not be available on this disc." But I know this isn't true having used a store bought DVD. So far I've put in a philips lens cleaner disc, no change. Next I'll try to leave it on a few hours in case it might be moisture needing to bake out of it (from manual troubleshooting section). Just wondering channel owner if you can offer any advice based on this information. Thank you.
Have you tried to manually clean the optical pick up with a cotton swab and glass cleaner like in the video?
Not yet but I will make some time to try this. I hope it is not too delicate in the disassembly needed to access the lense. Thanks for your response I appreciate it.

How is your unit connected to the monitor (RF output, HDMI, Composite)? Will it play a DVD?

I have a question. I have this exact same model except it is white. Certain VHS tapes I play in it have this gray fuzz at the top, about 20% of the screen. Everything that is supposed to be where the gray is was curved (Literally, the movie was curled) like twisted. On the left side of the top, I see this black diagnal line Covering like a photo frame of the gray.
EXAMPLE: If there was a flower on screen, it would show the flower as normal, but where the Gray is, the pedals would completely stretch out.
Is this a VCR or VHS problem?, because like I said, this only happens with abous 25% of my VHS tapes.
Are they home made tapes (like camcorder tapes)? Sometimes the commercial tapes have Macrovision copy protection that will mess with the white levels.

Could be a alignment issue with guide. You usually also notice HiFi audio will crackle as well typically. If it noise on top, or bottom of picture and also seem stretch out on the edge likely the issue. Also clean linear audio head as control for tracking and whole tape path including capstan shaft and heads. I had one that did that and due to dirty tape path was causing mistracking.
The reason people ask of it is a home recorded VHS is due to sometimes tapes were recorded on a misaligned VCR, or camcorder. It common as I get a few once in a while I have to transfer over for people and literally keep a cheap VCR around and put it out of alignment to match alignment of the original deck that recorded tape to recover.
Macrovision normally would appear as picture going bright to dark, or edges wavy as sync pulse they put on tape and AGC on TV can't compensate for it.
No these combo usually don't have that problem. A bad tape will have wavy like pincushioning and jitter effect usually on top of frame. I use a full frame TBC to correct that and proc amps to fix chroma issues and bring color back in where it sure be.
Biggest POS I have owned. Dvd drive failed after 93 days. Luckily found an older model thrifting. Replaced drive. VCR has the worst auto tracking. If you play an old tape with even the slightest tension...the "safety" stops the Tape. Wayyyyy too sensitive.
You seem too fix a few of these vcr's.the trend died off years ago in England.is it making a comeback ?

There's no trend... People using these units are basically the ones interested in transfering their family home videos or those like myself who love cinema and have thousands and thousands of movies in VHS, Beta, V2000... that didn't get released in any other format. There's no money to be made in the repair business nowadays. What amazes me the most is the people spending $xxx to repair these garbage combo units when you can buy a fully working device for $40 (or even less) all day long. A S-VHS unit is another thing. Those are always worth the time and money to repair.

Hi 👋. . A Question from Ireland 🇮🇪 . I have this player and it's copying VHS to Dvd very well for me . I'm using Dvd + Rw 4.7 GB no problems 😊. But when I use Dvd +R DL 8.5 GB for longer VHS 📼 it won't Recognise it . Have you any suggestions 🤔 to my Dilemma . Thank you 😊.
It is possible that it cant recognize a dual layer DVD. It may be a design flaw, or a design limitation. Look in the owners manual and see if the dual layer DVDs are compatible.

It has probably detected some kind of fault which is why it shuts off. Could be a VCR or DVD fault. It also monitors several internal things like power supply voltages.
