We called these finger waves in the 80s/90s (using the fingers and a rat tail comb) and Black hair stylists would do our entire heads in small, medium, or large waves. They used a lot of gel and it would last for 1 to 2 weeks or until the gel got old and started to flake. It was a great protective style but the majority of us had relaxers.
