  • I decided to become a stamp collector and bought a bunch of postage stamps!
Here I am excitedly opening/unboxing them. Eventually I learned most of them were CTO's (see my second video) but I still had a great time unpacking them and think they are beautiful! If you don't mind all of the CTO's the ebay account I purchased these from was philatalist.v based in Greece. Overall I'm happy with the quality and variety of stamps and topics from my first ever buy.

If you could email me at ted.talks.stamps@gmail.com I would like to request permission to utilize your logo and perhaps a video snippet, to give a shoutout to your channel in my next video. You probably already know this by now, but for anyone else who is wondering the reason most of those stamps were curling is because of the gum on the back. They’ll generally straighten out again once put into an album and/or stock book/page. Mint stamps or cancelled to order stamps are often curly like that.

    • @StampCatStamps
      @StampCatStamps  2 года назад +2

Yes I discovered this! One of the marks of a CTO ... (Cancelled stamp with gum) that I learned about after getting these. I was wondering what was happening since they were flat on arrival in the package, but curling all over my counter top. But after storing them back in books/mounts they are back to behaving themselves.

Thanks so much! It's really fun to see what subjects each country chooses for their stamps! Even the ones that don't seem related to the country... In a way it's fun to see what they 'think' stamp collectors are interested in!

I came across your channel because of the video about the Bulgarian tree stamps. Your enthusiasm is evident and infectious. :) Let me offer some help with identification:
1:50 commemorates the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the first joint American-Soviet space mission. As this was during the Cold War, it was quite a big deal at the time.
3:56 is the Soviet moon probe Luna 10. It became the first artificial satellite of the Moon.
5:05 commemorates the flight of Valentina Tereshkova on Vostok 6, making her the first woman in space and the tenth person in orbit (12th person in space, if we count US suborbital flights).
7:33 the Hungarian stamp in the middle doesn't seem to provide the name of the probe, so: it's from the Soviet Mars program, it could be any of Mars-2, -3, -4, -5, all of them had that distinctive conical lander.
7:42 LOL, I have those Bulgarian stamps with old sailing ships too. They must have been ubiquitous. Just in case you can't figure it out, if you decide to research it: the right one is a ship of the East India Company.
8:21 The leftmost stamp at the bottom is also Bulgarian, and because I know you won't be able to read the highly stylized Cyrillic lettering (they tried to make it look medieval): it depicts the 9th century ceramic icon of Saint Theodore Stratelates (Teodor Stratilat in Bulgarian), found in the ruins of the ancient Bulgarian capital Preslav. The text "1300 ГОДИНИ БЪЛГАРСКА ДЪРЖАВА" - 1300 years of Bulgarian state (since the founding of the first Bulgarian Empire in 681) - indicates that the stamp was part of the commemorations of that anniversary in the 1980s. The anniversary was commemorated in a lot of ways, including naming the first Bulgarian satellite (launched by the USSR) Bulgaria 1300, and building a large, ugly monument on the hill over my hometown (Shumen). Never mind that Bulgaria didn't exist as a sovereign country for about 700 of those years...
Good luck with your stamp collecting, and have fun researching the stamps!

Belatedly catching up on your channel! Welcome to the club! This video recaptured for me the thrill of a mixed world lot, which isn’t how I buy my stamps these days, but it was how I built my collection when I first started collecting as a child. I was a bit of a choir kid too, so I had a similar affection for that Nicaraguan choir set! Looking forward to watching more 👏🏻

One trick I learned long ago for curling is to put the stamp in a glassine envelope and draw it over the edge of the table in opposite direction of the curl.
      Might take couple of swipes

I just found your videos. It is nice to see new collectors get excited. What you have is a very nice batch for $5.00. I have collected for many years so I was a kid when I had your enthusiasm. If you think the Greek stamp was colorful you should see the first Air Mail set from Greece. Looks like they were painted in watercolors. Very nice. As for nudity there are people who collect nudes on stamps as a topical. Stamps will curl especially with humidity they can be flattened with a book or preferably you can buy cards with plastic on front that will keep your stamps from curling. If you need help identiying any countries feel free to contact me.

Thank's so much for your comment! I searched up those Greek airmail stamps - they do look like water-colours - very beautiful, and I like the design of the plane (double boat plane?) on them, too! Nudes on stamps as a topical- oh my! I guess I shouldn't be surprised - a few months in and I'm discovering there can be a topical stamp collection for literally anything (part of what makes collecting fun!) but as for nudes they're still a bit racey for me!

I've always been a bit of a history buff.
I find you also a History Enthusiast.
Many Stamps carry wonderful Stories with them.
at 6:41 you see two Stamps of Katanga.
This country proclaimed its independence from Congo on 11 July 1960 and lasted less than 2.5 years.
They even issued their “Independence Stamps” overprinted on the Independence issues of Congo !

Thank you and yes I do find this information interesting! I had noticed that - that some of the stamps from that area seemed to have similar design but different country name or overprint when comparing the stamps... I think some of the carved figures/mask set stamps show that as well ? It's so interesting to see how the changing of 'ownership' by a country can be reflected on stamps that way!
