@Jason.A my mum worked as a nurse who has met drs and very successful patients with rampant opioid addictions that appear to be "functioning" to the uncritical eye. You'd be surprised how well people can hide it. Even when my friend's relative was at the peak of her heroin addiction (shooting up multiple times a day) she still appeared as a normal, loving stay at home mother who was very tentative to her children and frequently posted on her popular social media accounts. She even fooled people who were very intimate in her life. Addiction/drug use isn't always starkly obvious and it can be easily hidden if you don't suspect the person of doing it in the first place.

I think Maurice is the kind of guy who wouldn't have been caught for this if it was even 2 years later, or if he had ever heard about this kind of thing before. TCAP was brand new, and even the internet itself was relatively new. Not just predators, but most people who used the internet then-didnt connect it to the real world. You didn't think what you did online had consequences. You didn't connect it to legal trouble and being on national TV and losing your job. The show had nothing to do with him ending his life. I have watched every episode and have no suicidal thoughts because of the tcap. The guy got off with a brief period of house arrest, his career was not in fact destroyed in earnest as he was able to secure bio/medical consulting jobs (probably lucrative) after the arrest, and while his wife divorced him, she ended up taking him back in the end. Wolin got off very easy.

You'd be surprised how well people can hide it. Even when my friend's relative was at the peak of her heroin addiction (shooting up multiple times a day) she still appeared as a normal, loving stay at home mother who was very tentative to her children and frequently posted on her popular social media accounts. She even fooled people who were very intimate in her life. Addiction/drug use isn't always starkly obvious and it can be easily hidden if you don't suspect the person of doing it in the first place.
I hate it when people blame this show for ruining predators' lives. They ruined their own lives by getting caught. Had they not been caught, someone young and innocent would have had their life ruined.

One of the most bizarre TCAP cases- I'm amazed that someone with the discipline and education of a cancer doctor would not think long and hard (no pun intended) about the potential consequences of his actions. I do feel sorry for his family, especially his children for having to live forever with the disgrace of knowing dad was a pedo, with his crime posted forever on the internet for the world to see. I think Wolin wrote a book after this "How to Completely F**k Your Life Over in One Day"
I think Maurice is the kind of guy who wouldn't have been caught for this if it was even 2 years later, or if he had ever heard about this kind of thing before. TCAP was brand new, and even the internet itself was relatively new. Not just predators, but most people who used the internet then-didnt connect it to the real world. You didn't think what you did online had consequences. You didn't connect it to legal trouble and being on national TV and losing your job. I think pretty much ever since this episode (the first one I ever saw), people of Maurice's level of intelligence just figured out if you're gonna be a pedo, you can't be a pedo in this particular way. It's like not knowing a law exists and finding out it does (he knew it was illegal to probably meet up with a child, didn't know that people did online stings for that). I say all this because you really don't see people of Maurice's education class in these stings after this, and what you do see is a lot of complete dumbasses. It's not that smart people are better behaved, it's that they know talking to complete strangers online who say they're 13 is probably a trap. But Maurice was so early to the party, I don't think he considered for one second that this could be a sting. It was and he was made an example of.
Meanwhile there is no shortage of simpletons who continue to get caught, and continue to talk to people who aren't cops, on video, without a lawyer, about why they showed up to meet a minor. 30 and up guys who think teenagers get online and are excited to talk to sad old sacks of shit about what they'd like them to do with their genitals.

The show had nothing to do with him ending his life. I have watched every episode and have no suicidal thoughts because of the tcap.
