I'm so glad I discovered you on RUclips. I'm watching you work with layers of trees/tiny life-like leaves. Once upon a time, in a land of diapers and bottles and kids growing up, I painted. Now I've picked the brushes back up and am practicing your techniques. They are so helpful! I'm partial to landscapes and seascapes. Yours are magnificent. I hope you learn to paint as fast as you speed up the video so, as you said, you can become a wealthy man. Thanks for taking the time to teach us novices, and best wishes. (Saw your baby with you; didn't see the date it was captured. Such a beautiful child. All the best. And congratulations.)
Michael you are my hero O.M.G. I have no words. You are amazing. Yours painting looks like a real pic from a cannon camera or Minolta H.D. ❤I love your woods trees lakes rivers pounds
Brilliant method, you have taught me so much,my trees have improved no end,I don't care how long it takes to get a good result, not a patch on yours Michael,I hasten to add!
Hi Michael. Having watched a heap of your videos (thanks, by the way), I wanted to go back to the first few and catch up a bit on your techniques. As always, they're great instruction and it's beautiful to watch the images come to life. Thanks again!
hi michael first saw you in artists & illustrators, so glad you are making these videos. it would be nice to see one from start to finish. no pressure then ha! keep up the the great work.
Just found your channel and I am very impressed. Just making a quick scan, I didn't see a video on what materials you use and why. Would absolutely love to see that and get your thoughts. I'm sure there are other folks interested as well. Thanks so much!
Wow....so inspired watching you work. Do you think this technique could work with all acrylics" I've never used Oil paints. Might have to take a try with oil. Love your work and patience definitely does pay off. AMAZING!
The background trees colors are very realistic. What colors did you use? Our mountains in Colorado are similar in the distance. You technique is fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
Wow! Incredible stuff! Do you have any tips for painting water? What values do the colors usually take on when they are reflected on water, like how things at a distance become more blue, what can be said about water? Great video, I loved it! You have an amazing gift!
Michael you do amazing work. I do enjoy watching your videos. The piece of wood you use to protect the painting, that you use an a had rest? Are there rollers to help the board move back and forth? I assume the the wood in not touching the work.
Wow!! I love this technique. Thank you for sharing so much. I am totally intolerant of turps (get a crashing migraine after 10 mins). Do you have any suggestions for a substitute?
First I love your videos. Your instructions are very concise. I could sure use some help. I cannot get my bristle brushes to act like your brushes are acting when it comes to putting on leaves. What can I do?
Me encantaría entendernos mejor, no hablo inglés y me cuesta seguirle, pero me gusta muchísimo su trabajo. Gracias por compartirlo, aprendo, que es lo importante.
I love your paintings Michael, the first layer of leaves is wet on dry, are you applying the second layer on wet paint, or do you wait for the first layer to dry?
i think your works of art is just beautiful, but you start off some of your painting with layer and i am wondering i how do i get to the point that you first start your instructions of how to paint thank for sharing Lawson sr 1
Hiya Michael, I've watched all your videos. thank you so much for sharing they're great BUT... I have tried and tried to 'do' trees... I get how you do it, dark, then build up colour, then the minute leaves... I've spent hours and hours copying you and I just can not get it right. I've tried little brushes, a rigger... carefully, taking my time with it. Nope looks bloody awful. Is the secret the brush (what brush is it?) is it because its Oil? (I use acrylics) are your strokes really TINY? I don't know help me HELP ME!!! Love your work X thanks so much!
Hi. You do acrylics. So do you think that such a work can be done with acrylics as well? Having the goal of doing this realistic landscape painting, do you think acrylics have this capacity? I'm trying to choose between the two, but I have no answer and I have noone to try the two before buying the supplies. So I need someone who is trying to do this kind of work to tell me if they can do this with acrylics. Pleaaaaaaase answer my question.
the problem is acrylics dry fast and keeping mixed colors can be difficult. u need to have a wet type of paper under teh paints on the palette. not sure where to find it, saw it in a video. oil is better for realism but much messier. acrylics are good if you have a small space and don't want to worry about ventilation. the key is to keep the mineral spirits covered up. when i was starting i was doing a big painting and kept jar open. the next day i felt sick all day long.
Yes this can be done with acrylics.I have used acrylics for many years and found them to be every bit as capable as oils. You just have to work with a medium long enough to get to know it.
For acrylics, you need a "wet palette". It's a shallow flat container (sides about 1/2" high), with special wet palette paper. It comes with a thin sponge that fits the flat tray. You wet the sponge, pour off excess, lay the palette paper waxy side up, and place your paint puddles on the paper. It has a lid and will keep your paints wet for at least a week. You will love it and find you can't paint without it. Available at Michaels or any art store that sells acrylics. Enjoy!
Hello Michael ...your work is awesome and I loved it...I'm going through your videos and I love to try them..... May I know the brush size... And will this work with acrylics?
Oh my god. So mamy thanks. I've been looking for this answer for so long. Do you use open acrylics or slow dri mediums or the retarders? Please help me. Thanks so much.
Please advise colour mix of your furthest background trees. Lovely cold grey green colour. I struggle to get that colour in my landscapes. Thanx love your work from South Africa. Please come visit us on the Cape.
I must say after watching most your videos you are pulling some amazing detail out this way, but it does seem like a Tedious method, but it has great results.
Nobody has ever learned how to paint watching these videos. There’s a new episode of Hidden Brain that talks about people endlessly watching these type videos and never actually putting paint to canvas, now for me I would like more details in your mysterious method other than the soul sucking entertainment of thinking we can just watch and do it. Peace

Honestly, this video of MJ is comparable to the moonwalk dance of MJ.
Hi Michael
Great work. Do you use the same process for close up trees ?
Very informative. What type of brushes do you find most effective for your foliage?
great stuff
You are as patient as a saint.
extra ordinary person in this planet.

Kkkķkkk é não ele usa uma técnica bem diferente, vc deve ser principiante.
Hi a t 3 : 46 are you going back and forth from the paint mixture of ivory black and sapgreen or using a lighter green?
Je to paráda.
what brand brush do you use? Mine does not hold paint that well and tip bends easily. Thanks
Hello Michael ...your work is awesome and I loved it...I'm going through your videos and I love to try them.....
May I know the brush size...
And will this work with acrylics?
yeah lve created the same in acrylics if it helps!
Oh my god. So mamy thanks. I've been looking for this answer for so long. Do you use open acrylics or slow dri mediums or the retarders? Please help me. Thanks so much.
Just ordinary acrylics, Windsor Newton etc, ok good luck :)
I have a green utility box i would like to paint with foliage leaves would you show how i might go about it?
Sometimes you use white spirits to thin the paint other times liquin, under what circumstances should you use each one?
Please advise colour mix of your furthest background trees. Lovely cold grey green colour. I struggle to get that colour in my landscapes. Thanx love your work from South Africa. Please come visit us on the Cape.
How do you get the thicker highlight paint to stick to the thinner shadow paint?
Do you refer back to a photo as you paint? Or do you just wing it?
Beautiful! Do you offer online lessons with live feed for following along with you? Do you only paint landscapes?
Never mind my last question. I just found that you do do more than landscapes.
Hi am i want to no if this can this technique work in acrylic?
Amazing! just found your channel today! do you block in with oils or with acrylic? Thank you.
Thanks, any brand preference? I've never blocked in but can see where it would be easier to add detail. Thanks again.
what colour do you use for distant hills
What’s the paint consistency for painting grass
various green colour ,how I get it
Do you wait to dry each layer?
can you please show how to do the distant mist kind of a feel
Hi there, this might help #60 Oil Painting | Start to Finish | Michael James Smith, How to paint fall Landscape. It's on his list of paintings.
Looks like you're basically using a pointillism technique to indicate the leaves of the trees. Is that correct?
what is the size that you generally use
how did you do the trees at the very back? is there a video on that?
# 6 the previous.

no pintas muchas marinas ? You do not paint many marinas ?
Did you ever think about doing the Wet on Wet technique for Oil Painting?
