If you've ever watched Shazzan (the cartoon this is based on), this is extremely funny. It originally aired in the 60s, but Cartoon Networked showed it extensively back when they used to air old cartoons on Saturdays. In the cartoon, Shazzan is an omnipotent genie that can basically never be defeated and always overpowers his opponents in humiliating ways. It's the equivalent of a professional baseball player knocking a child's pitches out of the park and making the kid feel bad.
Agreed 😊
this was one of my faves along with Space Ghost, Bird Man, the Herculoids, Moby Dick, the Impossibles, the Galaxy Trio and, of course, Super Friends.
Glad someone else grew up with this. I feel like we were the last generation to appreciate classic Hannah Barbara cartoons thanks to Cartoon Network.
@@isuriadireja91 my favorites too use to watch them on cartoon network I was 11 in 1995 also loved Johnny quest the flintstones the jetsons too 📼
@@mikesilva3868 Johnny Quest and Super Friends were my faves back then...oh and The Herculoids, of course.
The first time I saw this was some of the hardest I've ever laughed at SNL in my whole life
I've watched this about 12 times. It was hilarious at first, but every time it turned sadder and more disturbing.
@@AdityaDeo-cg6eu
It's in poor taste and it's the type of comedy that you get today. "shock" comedy doesn't need much work or brain power. You only need to shock the audience.
@@FriendlyCroock Are you muslim or something?
@@qwerty-wz1yk
I'm just telling facts.
If you compare this to something like seinfeld for example what is clear is that one uses mind to create comedy, the other one's using "shock"
It's actually like one of those Tim and Eric skits and Eric Andre skits
you realize this was aired around the same time as Seinfeld?
The mom part when she shrieks, he needlessly kicks her, she vomits, and he transforms it to rats that eat her is too fast for my mind to process. I'm building my abs laughing so hard!
Exactly how I felt
My favorite part is the audience not laughing.
I think he meant "stopped laughing" near the end there
@Carl Rice you're a little slow, Carl, but that's okay bud
Things got very awkward in that audio audience.
I like how the kids have been there so long they grew out of their clothes.
But they're small kids again in the "tune in next week" thing after that part, so I'm thinking they haven't actually been there for years (what would they eat and drink after all) and the genie did that with his magic as collateral damage and he'll change them back.
Is this a real cartoon from the 1970s?
@@louistournas120 No, of course not. It's a parody, like Ambiguously Gay Couple or Hete+Roy
@@wojciechficek616
But the drawing style look like from the 1970s, like SpiderMan, Batman, Yogi bear, Flintstones, Jetsons.
@@louistournas120 This particular short was released in 2005, but it is supposed to look like the old cartoons, because it's parodying them.
Why does Shazang look like Will Smith as Genie? 😂
I was gonna comment that omg ☠
That's one of those coincidences that feels like a prediction.
I Know Right!!
Oh my goodness. I haven't seen this since it was on an SNL special probably 15 years ago.
The fact is that Will Smith looks more as Shazam than Alladin's Genie
This video still haunts me, after all these years. The audience just falls silent lol
If only mom could see you 😂😂😂😂😂
It just kept getting weirder and weirder, that was off the charts! I busted a rib!
How does Smigel get these old cartoon parodies to look so utterly authentic?
01:36 By tracing the art from people whom he didn't pay. i.pinimg.com/736x/96/da/d9/96dad9acc45ffb65f4cd08ca5c50b7be--alex-toth-cartoon-characters.jpg
The way he just kicks the grieving mother is too much 🤣
When they write Louis C.K's biography; there's gonna be a whole chapter devoted to this little gem... I suspect it explains a lot.
I doubt it. The genie simply has some fairly common complexes, he simply has the power to easily hurt others without personal consequences unlike most people.
@@medexamtoolscom Speaking of people who easily hurt others without consequences, I want Shazzang to do to this president what he did to that rajah.
@@jessragan6714 I know right, Biden deserves all that and more! lmao
@@dbzispimpin its all fun and games till some tard makes it political
The true genius in this is the time lapse to the last scene when the kids turn pubescent. Smigel is a genius.
Someone else noticed this but didn't make the connection. This is like the little throwaway gags in MAD Magazine.
That guy in the audience going "Oh my god" at 2:25 sums it up pretty well.
holy shit that took a turn.
When they teach tonal shift in film schools, they show this clip...
I remember being a very little kid staying the night at my grandpas place and I was up late watching TV. I flipped through the channels and stumbled on this and it scared the hell out of me. I was so disturbed and felt bad watching it and never watched something like this before on TV.
Later that night I believe it was the first time I’ve ever seen or heard of South Park and it was the pilot episode. Found that show tame in comparison despite the Kenny death in that one lol
This is how we get desensitized.
Writer: Dino Stamatopoulus
Well, Moral Orel makes a little more sense now.
AKA Star Burns
Also Mary Shelley's Frankenhole. (And he was the voice of Drinky Crow as well.)
Holy shit, I just noticed, and I watched that whole show (Moral Orel)!
He was on Mr Show as well.
The writer of Frankenhole?! That explains the absurd dark humor. 😂
Also, Frankenhole is quite underrated.
This is my favorite type of comedy -- the kind that turns the audience into the farce. The villain is "cheesy," so everybody just laughs off the idea that he was going to grind two children to bits between two walls, and suddenly they have a conscience when he himself suffers a torturous death.
Brilliant job by Robert Smigel, Louis CK, and Dino Stamatopoulos, and the rest of the crew as well.
That poor cow!
LMAO that escalated so quickly
Never ceases to amaze me how this goes from hilarious to downright disturbing
well Louis CK co-wrote this
No wonder there was a Disturbance here.
And Starburns
That was horrifying and traumatic, and I think I have permanent PTSD.... ***hits Play Again***
Damn that's a pretty legendary group of writers.
Especially Dino. Created some fantastic stop-motion for [adult swim].
@@matcha6710 And Community.
@@matcha6710He was on Mr Show as well.
I lost it when he started laughing and punching the cow XD
I KNOW,RIGHT?!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very creepy.
I remember puking when I saw this as a kid
What a wuss.
The look on the Camels face is priceless and the kid goes you got em and now it's over !!! Reminds me of a schoolyard fight.....Its over !!
Kaboobie
In hindsight this is technically worthy of being in the Top 10 Most Brutal Anime Deaths.
I laughed extra hard at yo comment
Shazam's evil brother is nuts
wow, this sketch went in a COMPLETELY different direction i was expecting...
Subverted your expectations, then?
They gotta make more of these.
As a regular viewer of Shazzan back in the day (on Saturday morning CBS), I approve.
This was really made for those like you!
And me. I'm almost 60.
I can't get will smith off my head
Then give him head.
'Bout time they brought this cartoon back!
The camel is everything.
i remember watching this as a kid and to this day it’s one of the most fucked up skits i think i’ve ever seen on tv
The lawn gnome looking villain who Shazanng bitchslaps 100 yards away most likely dies, but he still gets off a helluva lot easier than Rajah.😂
True.
This is on 00s Newgrounds levels of comedic shock, and fucking love it.
I watched reruns of the cartoon back in the mid to late '90s and this SNL parody is hilarious. 😂
This was all Robert Smigel and co. Pure insanity 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
i guess it's sort of a parody of those really disturbingly vicious comics back before the silver age about punishing evil doers
stuff like stardust and fantomah. i mean, looking at it like that, i GUESS it makes ... sense?
X : DC I don't recall those being anywhere this sadistic. Agreed, they had some moments of gratuitous beatings, but not of any sort that would lead a levelheaded kid/parent think of it as satanical foreplay.
Really, this is gone wrong in more than one ways.
No, it's a parody of Shazzan.
Neither of those comics was that demented. Stardust had surreal, goofy punishments, tamer than this cartoon.
@@Dellaluna13 Fletcher Hanks's Stardust and Fantomah comics were pretty off the wall back in their day although not to this level of viciousness.
On the other hand this SNL Shazzan parody is pretty tame compared to some of Gilbert Shelton's Wonder Warthog Underground Comix which took superhero gonzo sadism to a whole new level long before the SNL TV Funhouse ever came on the air.
The comics that got censored were ones like Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, etc. They basically were morality tales where the bad person got their comeuppance. They were controversial because the drawings were quite gory. A lot of the stories though were really good. This is based on 60's & 70's tv cartoons which were not gory. It is a parody by definition.
😨well that escalated quickly.
Kicking the mom was the best bit.
Even Itchy thinks it's excessive.
Somehow this comment section is more sensible than the video itself...how did that happen...
OH DAMN!!!! I WAS ALREADY LAUGHING WHILE WATCHING THIS,BUT WHEN HE PUNCHED THAT COW AND COW SH*T, I REALLY LOST IT SO MUCH I COULDNT BREATH FROM LAUGHING SO HARD!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!
Man, these TV Funhouse were so hilariously dark and twisted.
I remember seeing this as a kid and being so disturbed
That escalated VERY quickly!! 😬😳🤯
Back when I watched SNL and TV Funhouse came on, it was understood that Smigel liked pushing the envelope, which was part of the fun. If there was a line to be crossed, he would obliterate it and laugh at the offended audience while giving them the finger and often compelling them to think.
The Shazzang short was a great example of forcing the viewer to confront our often hypocritical positions on violence. That said, this was the only one that bothered me on a deeper level, even as an adult.
Which I suppose was kind of the point.
Robert Smigel did so much by parodying long-forgotten kid shows from the 60s.
Kudos to the 5 guys in the audience with a dark sense of humor. I'm right there with you.
made my day
Cannot unsee what has been seen.
Why is everyone so sensitive to this? Lol Its hilariously disturbing and just kept escalating like the puke turning to rats like wtf 🤣 Its just weird for SNL, would be perfect on adult swim lol
I USED TO LAUGHT AT SHAZAANG, now I 2 understand his pain of trying to impress his dad too much.
That was… disturbing.
Of course I knew it was gonna take a dark turn but boy, I wasn’t prepared for THAT dark
we need live action this brutal Shazzang
it would be a snuff film.
No network or online service would broadcast it
this genie is definitely out of his meds. he's like hannibal lecter
That got real dark.
I am traumatized now. :(
Everything was Rated PG until 0:50 😧
Then it turned Chainsaw Massacre/Human Centipede Genre in 0:51 😳😳
my favorate part is shazzang has suddenly felt depression of he's own violentic behavior.....thats so wellmade satire!!! i love it
Bruh they predicted will smith would be the new genie
I would totally watch it!
I don't think I'll sleep. Tonight...
*You know the kids could've spared themselves the nightmare fuel if they actually ran forward maybe....ten feet?*
Unsee you must, disturbing it is. Mmm.
Still my favorite sketch from SNL ever made
This and the rocks for children in iraq
I used to watch Shazaan when I was 6 years old back when originally aired in the late 60's. When SNL ran this spoof my childhood memories were ripped apart. I didn't know whether to laugh or be horrified. At any rate my jaw hit the floor. This was one of the craziest and over the top parodies I've ever seen. Still funny after all these years.
Omg there’s so much clapping!!!!! With the you-know-what, I haven’t heard audience applause like that in what seems like years lmao
Well that got dark fast...
not much laughing at the end there!
Roses are red
Jimmy Neutron has to blast
I'm gonna be honest and say
That escalated so fast......
One of the funniest things I've seen in my life. Never gets old.
Where's the joke? Just looks like Satanic shit from the tribe
@@NN-ix9wf The jokes are multiple. For one, it's showing what would happen in these cheesy cartoons if the villain actually got what he was trying to dish out. I mean, he was trying to crush those kids between two slow-moving walls, FFS. The fact that we feel bad for him when he gets a similar, torturous death is the farce.
Simultaneously, it's ridiculing the "Deus ex machina" premise of these types of shows and demonstrating what such a savior character could/would act like if it had human psychology.
Underrated
Boy! That got DARK!
Shazzang has the hair and the goatee thing but he doesn't look like Will Smith at all. This comment section is whack
It's just a generic genie look. That is the common thing that will smith's genie is based on as well, and that is the origin of any resemblance.
Wow that was..... Different
Ed: Oh, Frank! It's horrible. That's so horrible!
Frank: [comforts Ed] I know, Ed.
Ed: My father went the same way.
Wow that definitely went all the way
I can't stop laughing, for some reason this seems so in character for Shazzan :P
I love shazang so much I remember that my dad got me into Saturday night live back in September 2004 I love it alot shazang is so knee slapping hilarious. Best regards Nikita.K
Is this even necessary?
One of the best ever
I remember the actual Shazzam cartoon
i watched this like more than 50 times….i still like it very much
Nov 5, 2023 I know somebody’s gonna say I brought politics into this, but this is truly how Netanyahu is treating Gaza
Hamas has Iranian backing and Israel US money. Aren't proxy wars fun😅
Jesus Chris. That is messed up. Brilliant satire
So dark and funny lmao
I lost it at the mom part.
This some dark s*** for SNL, I genuinely feel sick now.
Predictive programming: they knew Will would be Genie!!
that is very odd
I have yet to find another piece of media that sums up the father/son dynamic as well as this.
The only good joke was that it went on so long, the kids outgrew their clothes
"...and now its over."
Shazzang? More like Sha-sadist.
Sha-distic
@2.15 shazzang went christopher walken there for a while
