      i used to have a female dog like that , it was terrified of people . The only i could pet it was to call my other dog , the alpha of the pack ( also female) , and she'd "convince" her to sit still( i was only 11 at the time don't judge me ).

      +aswanson42-He actually is one of the absolute sweetest male owners I've seen from the show so far. A male owner that is not overly controlling and dominating, and being absolutely combatant. Just a doggy "dad" that is absolutely heartbroken his paw child is so afraid of him and he doesn't have a relationship with her because of it. It is hard to get through that repeated rejection, because you do believe that this is somehow your fault. That maybe you're just "not good enough." It's frustrating when your paw child is that afraid of you, even if it's not your fault. And with him, it clearly wasn't.
      And Victoria was more gentle with him than she usually is with owners that get in her face because she realized he wasn't a bad person. And he really listened to what she had to say. I think she appreciated that. When she went back to help, she wasn't angry, just a little upset that he had gotten so upset that the trust was a slow build and it would take some time. But she understood why he was so hurt about it and just gently told him it will take some time. You just have to be patient.
      And he clearly understood it would take a lot of time, love, and care to get Junie B to trust him. It may hurt but he truly wanted a relationship with Junie B. And hopefully over time, Junie B grew more and more comfortable with him to where their love for each other grew. And for the rest of her life, Junie B always wanted to be near Daddy.

I am his person and he really wants nothing to do with anyone else. He has also grabbed onto me like that with is legs/paws. He's like my little shadow. I've owned other dog breeds before but have never owned a breed that is SO owner-oriented. It's a very special kind of love but it can also cause strange issues (like with adorable little Junie B here). These two seem like lovely owners and I'm happy they got help to correct this issue.

Being rejected by an animal is so frustrating and upsetting, and it takes a lot of love for the animal, self control, and rejection of jealous feelings to get over it.
    I hope he and the dog get to have a great relationship continuing on. Clearly she was abused by a man in her past, and I hope she gets to see that was only a one-off case. This guy seems like the absolute perfect person for her problem, too.

      Considering, that other family dogs don't have that issue - I doubt it. And considering, that Junnie feels equally uncomfortable with their son too - it's probably just her poodle issues. • @feraflauna3238
      @feraflauna3238 4 года назад +36

      That was probably part of the problem, yes. Another problem was that Junie B was picking up on Joe's hesitation and uncertainty and that made her even more nervous. Because she didn't know why he was hesitating and looked so uncertain. And she knows she can't see that big hand behind her, she doesn't know what that big hand is going to do to her. And that makes her shut down.
      It was a better way to leash her up front or on the side. She didn't seem violent or mean, so leashing her on front wouldn't have been much of an issue. Victoria only probably encouraged going behind the back because she believed Junie B would freak out more if she saw the big hand coming for her and the less Junie B was aware that she was being leashed, the less she would freak out about it.
      But it was a better approach to show his hands. What he had in those hands and that he didn't mean anything other than that he was trying to leash her. This is what I'm only trying to do, I'm not trying to do anything else. And once she got more comfortable with Joe was when Joe got begin to try clipping the leash behind her back. That clicking noise when he went behind her back and when he clipped the leash probably freaked her out too. What is that noise? What did you do to me?
      Even if she is familiar to the sound of the leash being clipped on, with that intense fear, she is just not functioning the way she normally would and understanding, oh yeah, it's just the leash, it's okay. Big hand going above her, loud clipping noise. Maybe it would've good had Joe put his hand above her to show his other hand with a treat while he was doing it. At least Junie B then sees that one hand is not dangerous and that one hand she does see has something delicious in it.
      It's probably something Victoria later realized and encouraged later owners to do. Victoria is a rare dog behaviorist that will actually keep up with research and newest techniques and try to do better than she already has. With very timid dogs like Junie B, you have to go very careful and gentle and with a lot of love and patience. Treats help too.

    • @junbh2
      @junbh2 4 года назад +14

      He should also practice reaching just a little over her and immediately giving her a treat, when he doesn't need to put a leash on. I was dog sitting and socializing a dog (because the owner wouldn't put in the work), and had him meet another poodle (mind you with owner supervision and permission), but the poodle snapped at the poor puppy. Next day, the puppy would not go the same route as before--whimpered and cried. Just froze there, even though I was calm and confident, even with a treat, he sat down and was like, nope. I ended up going around the block the other way and then tried a few days later to go the same direction as before and nope.
      Calm, confident me, v. dog remembering a one-off event. Dog won for the remainder of the dog sitting even if we passed the same house going in the other direction. I did learn, though, that dogs have a fairly good memory for trauma. And the puppy did learn lots of confidence under me.

      @@yoonmikim5663 Oh that's.. That's a sad turn of events. Do you still dogsit him? If there are any dogs he trusts/plays with a lot, perhaps you could try walking there together? There are two dogs in our block that are very nice to mine, one time I ran into them and as I was chatting with their owner our dogs walked along nicely. When we got to the part where they usually want to take the short route home they were so busy playing that they just went along for the long route! So if that's not too difficult to arrange perhaps you could try it? At any rate you already helped the pup a lot by putting in work where the owner couldn't be bothered (wow, shame on them) so you already did great work!

I was going to socialize the dog better given more time since my Aunt and Uncle at the time had a dog that was pretty good with other dogs and I was pretty determined to make sure that dog was properly socialized, but I had to return the dog before then. It might sound like hubris, but I was really, really hoping that what I did for the dog, such as do basic training, potty training, etc helped it with his new owner and to adjust quickly. He retained the habits I instilled into him.
      But yeah... sometimes your own confidence doesn't always transfer to the dog. I thought that was a shame. If I had him for like 2 more weeks I'd have gotten him used to all sorts of places and environments. I spent a ton of money and time on that dog too. He was really smart.
      I haven't had enough income to get my own dog, but when I do it's on my list and I'd do my very best to not repeat my mistakes so that the socialization is more positive. I've dreamed of having a dog as long as I can remember.

It had to be disheartening for Junie B to have SUCH a radical behavior change simply because he took the leash, but he hung in there, did what Victoria told him and made progress. Joe is such a persistent man and looks like such a nice guy although he isn’t as patient he is such a poor guy. I feel bad for him 😬

    So sweet> She just needs some extra love and patience! Poodles are so sensitive and loving but need extra care. Thank you for the great, helpful video.

    I think that Joe subconsciously feels like he’s failing, and the son’s mocking reaction “Oh and he misses” reinforces it. Joe feels embarrassed and inadequate. Working on Joe’s self esteem would be a good angle so that he can be calm, kind, patient yet firm.

    Just goes to show how good a dog trainer Victoria is she does not use anything to harm the dog but use tools to help them like harnesses or a clicker and body blocking them she is the best dog trainer in the world that why I love her channel so much and if this guy follows Victoria and keeps up the good work he is doing he have the best friend in the world.

    When I rescued my dog tiny dog, she was terrfied of men. The doc at the pound said I'd have to work hard on that. It took about a year for her to completely relax without behaving differently. She would grab onto me just like that dog.

    I had two toy poodles and one had to be put to sleep in November. He was my precious little boy. They are very sweet, very intelligent and sensitive.

    It makes me happy to see owners so eager to improve their relationships with their dogs rather than just get them under control to make their lives easier

    It might have been easier to shape the leash attachment than try to distract through it. You just reward small increments like the empty hand well over her head, then as she gets good at not flinching about that, work up to touching the harness with the empty hand and rewarding. Then start over with holding the leash and slowly work up to just touching the snap to her back. Breaking hard things down into more manageable steps is less frustrating for the owner and gives the dog a lot more positive experiences along the way.

      I agree. People criticize Cesar Milan, but with he is actually incredibly patient and will break things down to the smallest, gentlest, approaches with leashes and muzzles, or dealing with someone the dog doesn’t like. I think this man was well intentioned and kind, but his energy needed to be toned down for that dog. Cesar would have put him in charge of feeding and treats for her, as well. Nothing against Victoria, I have just had incredible good success using Cesar’s methods, though I think Victoria is good, too.

      @@tonibauer2949 As a professional trainer, I do not endorse Cesar Milan in any way and have to spend a significant amount of my time undoing the damage people copying him have caused. I just want that to be clear. If you are looking for a video trainer I can recommend without any reservations whatsoever, check out the Kikopup channel on RUclips. Approximations and patience are both very valuable tools in animal training and I am glad you have learned them though!

    This family sucks. Instead of everyone staying quiet and waiting for him to get it they made comments, that may have been silly little comments, but when you're frustrated they make you more frustrated.

    I had a dog named Kobe that looked just like Junie B with the same problem, males. He got aggressive around men because he was sadly strangled by a man who might have been his previous owner before the family we got him from. When we took him in his bark was horse for awhile. The couple we adopted him from couldn't keep him cuz they were moving and needed to find a family for him. It took years for him to be comfortable with males cuz it was always my mom and I with him. No men in the house at the time. When my dad joined the family he grew comfortable cuz my dad was gentle with him and showed him that he's safe to be around. Kobe's aggression faded after that and he lived a happy life without his biggest fear. I miss him but I'm glad he was happy while he had him.

    I had a dog, a Hungarian Viszla, who hated men. He would growl, puff up and just shy away to every man he met.
    His owner was looking for a family, so my parents flew down to meet him and he LOVED my dad at first sight which is why we ended up getting him. He was the sweetest giant ever. He sadly had to be put down because of having cancer in his mouth. His adopted brother (who we got before Rusty) also ended up getting cancer, just different types.

    It’s hard to be a small dog..
    They have to see the world from a worms eye view..
    And something it might start getting scary
