I’ve never laughed so much at a cookery programme since the days of Keith Floyd (bless him)! He liked to keep well hydrated too, and sometimes some of the alcohol actually made it into the recipe. Thanks for cheering us all up - we shall follow you for more culinary tips, hacks and advice 👍
Thank you, Heidi, for reminding us to put our smoke detectors fire alarms back together and to make sure that their operational. 🏠 I had a house built in 1897 that had electrical fire in the middle of the night, and a smoke alarm saved my life. 😍
You are hilarious, Heidi! I think that the lesson learned here is that those cookers are meant for things that take a long time at low heat. Potatoes, etc. Don't build up the fire, direct heat on coals that have gone down to one layer, check after 1/2 an hour and adjust as needed. If you have to add coal, put it around the side of the cooker maybe or just one or two added underneath. Remember that it will keep cooking for a while after you get it out. You'll figure it out eventually. Invest in batteries for the smoke alarm! Great video.
When I cook with my cast iron Dutch ovens, I use coals - not flames. So my suggestion would be not to put it into flames, but let your fire cool a bit until you just have glowing coals and then put it in the stove. I have never seen a pan like that before, I love it!
I try not to get to hydrated while I’m cooking 😉 and they say charcoal is a natural purifier 😂 , I think your attempt was a noble effort and you never learn unless you try. That reminds me I think I needs to hydrate meself. Great video. ❤️
Heidi ,I would have eaten that no problem my omelettes always come out burnt ,glad to see that you kept hydrated reminded me of the late Keith Floyd legend ,and so are you stay safe Heidi and wet wipes I find clean the glass of the stove best x
It's your video and you could edit it anyway you wanted. It takes character to show the world your mistakes. It makes the rest of us feel pretty inadequate when we watch videos where everything ALWAYS goes to plan. Thanks for letting us see that you, like us, are human! We really love your channel.
What a neat little cast iron cooker. Try putting it in the oven first (Empty) to get it nice & hot, thing bring it out and put your mix in, and cook it on the table top. I cook corn bread in an iron skillet all the time this way.
What a great vlog Heidi…I loved it..very entertaining, and you showed me not what to do..🤣😂 the best part was watching you keep hydrated throughout the cooking process..🥂 It’s so important to stay hydrated at all times. Look forward to your next cooking Vlog..🤣🥰 stay safe and happy cruising…❤️
Loved your vlog. See you have a Mr D too. Now that is amazing. My family clubbed together and bought me one for my 70th birthday last year. Would love a wood burner again and would definitely get a cast iron potato +++ like yours. Loving your site, only just found you do have much happy watching to look forward to
Hi Heidi.Greeting from Vancouver Island...you made my morning with great things you get up to ...!!one things I've always kept on boat is powered milk if I ran out of fresh milk.not too tasty to drink in a glass but good in baking.....
My other half and I always get a kick out of your vlogs (and it's not the tipple we're drinking either). You're one very entertaining 'Rum Wench'. Hugs & cuddles to wee Pudding, Jackie & of course yourself! 🐕🥰 PS. Love your music, too!
Way to go! Looks fine. You will get it. Would be nice to have a lamb or beef stew going in a cast iron pot on top of the coal stove. Low heat. Just need more lead time. Love that potato cooker.
I was a Scoutmaster and it took me five years before my Scouts would eat anything that I did in a Dutch Oven. Pre warming and low coals was the secret. Walt Duba, Morro Bay, CA, USA
One more important point is to make sure that your cast iron cooker is well seasoned (see RUclips) and then don't over clean it. It should always look a bit greasy. Walt
Pre heat the neat little cooker next time. Canadian sitting in Florida, considering your suggestion about keeping hydrated, good advice, and seems to be working for me. Keeping the curtains closed, as it is 6:30 am. Cheers.
I think wait until it's glowing coals not flames, then heat the cast iron thingy for 5 mins, take it out, brush it inside with oil or butter, dollop omlette mixture into it, put it back in fire on the glowing coals for only 4 or 5 mins, then take it out. Your dog is adorable!
Hi Heidi!!! Loving your videos and sending you warm hugs from your new subscriber from Ohio, USA! My husband and I were watching RUclips and saw a video by you and been hooked since. Again, looking forward to your future adventures and blessings always.
Shiver me timbers Heidi, Pirates in the kitchen, whatever next? I was pleased to see you keep a nice clean top but it was a shame about your burnt bottom! When you were lifting the Dutch oven in and out of the fire with the hook we were singing the theme tune to Thunderbirds! You even looked like you'd got a hook for a hand! Aaaargh, look forward to the next one me heartie. Xx
I used to have a Morso Squirell in my kitchen. I burnt coal in it. When the fire had burnt down, and all the flames had gone, I'd wrap a baking spud in foil and stick it in the stove. I had to turn it over after 30 mins. Took about an hour to cook. Lovely and crispy skin. Put one in for Jacky.
A bit late today as I had to do a grocery run as tomorrow we have our third big snowstorm of the month ,about 30cms and strong winds too.Off to top up the fridge ,stay safe stay warm .love to you and Jacki and a pat for Pud Xxx
All I can say is 😂😂😂, that was too much fun. I knew it was going wrong when you plopped it all in a cold iron pot! You must warm iron first. But oh my the entertainment value of this cooking vlog was off the charts! Keep up the good work Heidi and maybe next time just drink more rum and lemonade❤️. Have a lovely week.
Oh that was so funny, I know it’s not polite to laugh but I couldn’t help myself. It reminds me of my cooking flops, trying to somehow fix the problem. I need the rum, that’s a must have!
Well, you weren’t away from doing it right! It’s a trial and error thing. Just needed less fire. If you closed the air to the fire and less time would do the job! ❤ Love!! 😍
Hello Heidi when you sus the potato cooker out let us know and we will dig our 1 out of the cupboard we gave up with ours years ago. It seemed like a good idea when we bought it haha.
we watch you while eating so was very excited when you started cooking, when it was slow to heat up I shouted put it in the stove, which you then did great minds think alike and continued eating when you pulled out that cooker I nearly choked and Kelly could not have helped for laughing, Pudding looked like seen it all before, LOL Ps I would love one of those cast iron potato cookers
I know you are a fan of rum , have you tried a dark and stormy, if not very easy, a good slug of rum in a tall glass and top up with ginger beer, very nice , 😁👍
Heidi. You were right by pre heating the cooker, it needs to be heated in the fire, to get both the top and bottom hot, then put your omelette in and put it on the top to cook, the heat from the pre heated pot will cook from the top as well. good luck next time
You should be on the telly Heidi enjoyed watching as for me Iam still in Wales went to Brecon saw the narrow boars there guise a spot to moor will return to Yorkshire at the end of the mouth, you keep having fun
As Ramsey says “colour is flavour “. I’ve got on of them on top of my workshop fire. It’s great once you get used to it. Everything takes ages though. Goose fat roast potatoes are my fave
They are designed to go in the fire. We called it a lunchbox stove. Wife did a crumble in it, used it for chilli, and chicken. Timing is the key. We'll done for first try at least you were able to salvage some, better than we did. Turned the chicken to a briquette.
Here in South Africa a popular way of outdoor cooking is to use a potjie, which is a large cast iron pot with tripod legs which you stand over hot coals, it is the perfect way to make a lamb stew and it's entirely compatible with enjoying a few glasses of your favourite beverage too 🙂
That looked like perfect caramelisation to me. At least that's my excuse when I cremate stuff on the barbecue. We gave our potatoe cookers away after we found that they don't get hot enough on top of the stove.
@@TheNarrowboatPirate The cooking pot thing will probably work better if you can shift some of the coals across and make a space for it to sit on the grate rather than directly on the coals. We can't do that with our because it's an oil burning stove and there isn't any space for one. We do wrap potatoes in tin foil though and chuck em in on the sides for a couple of hours and they are perfect. I don't think that there is enough direct contact between the bottom of the cast iron thingy and the top of the stove, to allow for enough heat transfer. Okay for warming mince pies but actual cooking would take ages if at all. Good luck anyway 👍
That gadget was an interesting one. Think you need to heat it first. I only have a 2 ring gas burner and use a camp cooker on top to cook pizza, quiche or pudding in my wee camper. You need to heat both the top and bottom up good and hot first. I put a triffet inside the bottom pan, it has no feet like a proper camp cooker. Turn gas to low put the pizza in then pop the top on. Sorry to see your omelette had a black bottom .But pleased to see you have the same method as me to let you know when your food is cooked -yes the smoke alarm goes off 😂
I usually hate cookery programmes but this has to be the most entertaining I’ve seen. Brilliant as always. Thank you
😂😂 thanks Spence

I was glued to this vlog,I was expecting Jamie Oliver to leap out of the canal , Brilliant 😂😂😂
A "bit burned". You have a gift for understatement.
😂😂😂
Thank you, Heidi, for reminding us to put our smoke detectors fire alarms back together and to make sure that their operational. 🏠 I had a house built in 1897 that had electrical fire in the middle of the night, and a smoke alarm saved my life. 😍
Oh wow very lucky
Love your sense of humour. "Stay hydrated ... chug a lug!" and "crack on" as you're cracking the egg. Fun video. cheers! 🙂
Cheers Ann 😃🏴☠️❤️

Aww thanks Jude 😂 I’m a terrible cook haha
Best laugh I’ve had for weeks Thanks

I agree heat the cast iron oven up in the fire first then cook on top of the stove. Now that drink you had is a fantastic idea. ❤️ Keith
😂😂 I’m going to keep experimenting with it 😂

Loved this haha! Made us feel better about the many many potatoes we have burned! 🥔😅
😂😂 thanks guys, I’ve burned many a potato too 😂🏴☠️
This is probably the most fun I've had watching a narrowboat cooking vlog. We always get a pre weekend cheer up on a Thursday evening.
Aww thanks Graham 😂
I try not to get to hydrated while I’m cooking 😉 and they say charcoal is a natural purifier 😂 , I think your attempt was a noble effort and you never learn unless you try. That reminds me I think I needs to hydrate meself. Great video. ❤️

Finally! A cooking channel I can relate to!
😂😂😂
Heidi ,I would have eaten that no problem my omelettes always come out burnt ,glad to see that you kept hydrated reminded me of the late Keith Floyd legend ,and so are you stay safe Heidi and wet wipes I find clean the glass of the stove best x
Yes I use wet wipes in the morning but it soon soots up 😂 thanks for watching and I’ll keep experimenting with the cast iron cooker and the rum 😂😂
It's your video and you could edit it anyway you wanted. It takes character to show the world your mistakes. It makes the rest of us feel pretty inadequate when we watch videos where everything ALWAYS goes to plan. Thanks for letting us see that you, like us, are human! We really love your channel.
Aww thanks again for your lovely comment Roger 😃 I’m glad you are enjoying the videos 😃🏴☠️
I have never seen one of those cookers. How cool. When cooking with cast iron on a fire you want to place it on coals.
What a neat little cast iron cooker. Try putting it in the oven first (Empty) to get it nice & hot, thing bring it out and put your mix in, and cook it on the table top. I cook corn bread in an iron skillet all the time this way.

Ha, ha a great cook up in spite of burning it, but staying hydrated saved the day.
Yes it’s important to stay hydrated 😃😃🥃🥃

Hahaa thanks Vicki 😂🏴☠️
Fantastic!😂 Some modern things, like cookers, are actually a good modern advancement.😂👍
Yeah, but when you run out of gas and the fire is roaring away, it’s good to make use of it 😂 wasted all my food then though 😂😂
PS love the snot cam intro with Pudding as a cockerel 👍💪
😂😂 it took me ages to make that hahaha
Best cookery vlog I've ever seen! 5:40 OMG! Looked like you could smelt iron in it! Love your channel.
😂😂😂
My mum would always say “when it’s black it’s done”. Well done on your try, just needs a bit of perfecting. I’m sure the hydration helped.
I always keep hydrated 😃🏴☠️
Loved your vlog. See you have a Mr D too. Now that is amazing. My family clubbed together and bought me one for my 70th birthday last year. I'd try lining the bottom with buttered, sliced bread then put the egg mix on top of the bread.. I'm sure it'd be delicious ;)
Oooh I may try that 😃🏴☠️
Some people cook with wine. You do a very good job of cooking with rum (and lemonade). Cheers from Aus.
Thanks Clark 😂😂
Just like mum use to make me. All blackened on the outside and good on the inside

Lemonade fixes everything. Nothing wrong with a little charcoal but that can be scraped away. Enjoy the day.
I blame the lemonade 😂 thanks Richard

Thanks for the laughs

We put a potato in ours back in 2018 when we bought the boat and it still hasn't cooked all the way through 😂🤣
😂😂😂😂😂 lmao
Well, you weren’t away from doing it right! It’s a trial and error thing. Just needed less fire. If you closed the air to the fire and less time would do the job! ❤ Love!! 😍
Carry on cooking episode
Fantastic Heidi 😄
Thanks David 😂😂
Once you suss that cast iron thing out, I reckon the omelettes will taste delicious Heidi! x

Heidi. You were right by pre heating the cooker, it needs to be heated in the fire, to get both the top and bottom hot, then put your omelette in and put it on the top to cook, the heat from the pre heated pot will cook from the top as well. good luck next time

Love your vlogs Heidi. Your very courageous cruising on your own. But you certainly do have fun.

Oh Hidi we use to put jacket pots in woodburner went to the pub came home black !!

That gadget was an interesting one. Think you need to heat it first.
I only have a 2 ring gas burner and use a camp cooker on top to cook pizza, quiche or pudding in my wee camper. You need to heat both the top and bottom up good and hot first.
