The problem with the longer thin wire way of moderating charging lithium is that it charges slower and slower the more full the battery gets - you might never get it fully charged - Renogy make a much cheaper DC to DC charger than Victron in 20, 40 & 60amp versions I have one on my motor home - it will charge your lithium battery faster and in the correct charging profile. I would recommend 40amp for a 90 -120amp alternator.
It does charge slower on my alternator but I’m cruising all the time and still fully charged In 3-4 hrs … I don’t run my engine when stationary as it’s so noisy being an old aircooled lister, but I do run my genny through my victron 60 amp battery charger charges in 1.5hrs … I can’t wait for better weather and my solar to kick in …. I will tell my friend about the Renogy though as they don’t have a genny and their system is very different with duel alternators etc thank you 😁🏴☠️
Your videos just get better and better. I love the fact that you don’t take yourself too seriously. The saucy humour really tickles me too. Here’s looking forward to next Thursday. Brilliant!
A wee nip! You do need to stay hydrated after all. 🙂 Cheers to the swans! Good on your Dad for being such a knowledgable help with the new lithium battery. As a retired diesel truck mechanic, I will caution you about adding a Lithium battery to the set. The other batteries are still old and still need to be replaced. You are now pretty much running on ONLY the Lithium battery, so it's super duper that you bought a large one. I'd suggest you dump the old batteries and simply add a second Lithium battery (tho I'm behind here so you may already have done that), you'll be good to go for 10-12 years with just two of those Lithium batteries. Hey, Pudding doesn't have even a T-shirt on and he's ok ... think about that! Extraordinary video ... wow. I love your vlog! I really do. 🙂
Aww thanks Ann 😄 these are lithium life po4 and not lithium iron batteries so work brilliant as hybrid as they keep the leads topped up and and means I don’t need to replace my battery charger, solar controller, alternator etc which I would if I went full lithium - lots of boaters going hybrid now. My leads aren’t knackered just not as good as they used to be 😂 but still showing green / healthy. However the set up has solved lots of power issues and means I’m running my engine and generator less saving on fuel 😄🏴☠️
Great video - well done dad with the proper crimping. It's actually at low speeds that the alternators get hot. Sort of counter intuitive, but it's because they have a fan built in which is more effective at cooling when spinning faster.
Fab Heidi. I stay a Vlog behind on purpose. I like to keep one under the cratch cover. In case the insomnia kicks in. A veiled compliment. 🤔 Yo ho ho....
Great that you found a solution to your power problem. What would we do without our Dad’s ❤️. Glad you are powered up and cruising. Keep your flask handy on those cold days🍷.
Another interesting video, thanks. However I would be a bit concerned about the MPPT trying to charge the mixed Lead-Lithium bank from the solar PV. Which chemistry should the MPPT use? If Lead then it is not best for Lithium. If Lithium it is not best for Lead. I would be tempted to retire the dead Lead and save the mass on the boat. Also double check the MPPT setting for the exact type of Lithium. The MPPT makers web site might have a PDF with a HowTo. Hopefully there is also a lead from the charger to the Lithium which double checks the temperature and such, as you note they are fussy in the freezing temperatures (and who is not??).
Also my batteries aren’t dead dead they have never been below 12.2 but do struggle this time of year with my fridge etc running and I do have to charge them a lot more in winter as no solar, so my genny has to go on a lot more throughout the day … but now with the hybrid I’m going from running the genny 3-4hrs a day to once every 3 days for an hour and half 😄🏴☠️
Thanks for that. I would also add for the viewers that another informative video is from Our Narrowboat Quest ( ruclips.net/video/jKAIMUNu2Pc/видео.html ) where Lithium and MPPT are explained by Pat and Eileen who have a different setup. Always good to compare and note that there is no one answer for all. Good to see a solution on a trad narrowboat.
Yes, I think they went full lithium which is a very different setup to hybrid … all set ups are different as I know it’s different for a duel alternator set up too … I think for anymore making the change to full or hybrid needs to check with the company … lifebatteries.co.uk couldn’t have been more helpful for me and my equipment 😄
Yes I agree with you 100%, lithium batteries are a game changer. We pu in a Lithium battery a couple of years ago, replacing the old lead batteries. The difference in weight is amazing. We are only allowed 3500kg, with passengers. So we shaved off a good amount of kilos. Plus as you say, in summer I can run the camper for at least 3 days, just taking a trip to shop and it's loaded again, so now all I have to get done every so often is the grey water and the loo. I got 2 cassettes, so when the ones full I swop to the number 2, I can go for at least 4 days, 6 at a stretch
I don't know Bab, all that power, 200 Lithium amps. You be carful what you plug into that, you could blow you mind. Say no more ! stay safe and keep up the great vids.
Hubbs loves calling them battery's lithuanian !Traffic cops on motorway ages ago would play snooker by colour of cars stopped, easy game to play with passsing boats, every pot requires a nip or two i say. Thanks & love the show........

You just get better each time! This week I couldn’t take my eyes off the red unicorn horn on the top of yer ‘ed during the first few minutes - that was my first chuckle 😂. By the time you’d passed several boats and the Jack Daniels was going down I was really laughing out loud. Thanks for cheering us up, keep going 😉
I'm surprised Rosie and Jim had the front to feature at the end of the vlog after their earlier behaviour. Shocking! Another great vlog, thanks to dad & J for all thier help. Puddin' looked lovely in his black stocking. Cheers Heidi! Xxx
Good game I’m watching you at 1.15 am got my vodka and coke every time you had a drink I joined you don’t have many narrow boats passing through Mansfield 😂😂
Hello Heidi - greetings from Poland I'm so pleased for you that your new lithium battery is such a success. Having to not run your engine to boost your battery power is not only easier for you, but you save money on diesel, I love your new game - "cheers to passing boats". The problem is, like me, when you drink Jack Daniels, your voice changes! When reading out the names of the new crew members, it went up up about 5 octaves! Stick to the rum girl. A fabulous video. Thank you so much for being you. You put a smile on my face. Stay safe please
Snot cam is the best cam! haha Cheeers.... a few times at least. Big Squishy hugs from Nova Scotia Canada - Thank you for all that you do. I appreciate you and your channel very much
This vlog is going to get a few boaters re thinking their battery set up Heidi, (including me) By the info that you are saying, and the savings on fuel, the lithium will end up paying for itself in no time! And the quality of life in the boat goes up too!
Oh this hybrid set up is fab as no need to change solar controllers, chargers, alternators etc I know about 5 who have done it which is why I wanted to do it … it’s hard in winter as I was having to put the genny on for 4hrs throughout the day, 2 hrs in a morning, 2 hrs in an evening but now I’m just running it for 1.5hrs once every 3 days and running my fridge freezer and everything 😂😂 I’m loving it Vince 😃🏴☠️
Loved this video, so funny, so non-nerdy. Glad it worked out well. Love, love Puddin'. Maybe have a nip when anything floats on the cut, not just boats, but swans, ducks... Greetings from British Columbia.
Hi Heidi loving the different angle camera shots it's great to see the boat from a different prospective and as far as the technical side of boats i love that side of it, so more please. And as usual you made me laugh particularly at the end with Rosie and Jim...... That was hilarious 😂
That's me...T shirt till -5C...I work in retail supplying bars and restaurants with wine and spirits...Jack D fire has been in short supply for weeks... Nice and warm in Ontario today...4C!
That was a fairly technical one Heidi and fair play to your dad sorting it out. And I was also wondering how many gallons of grog that hip flask of yours holds?
I have to use a mobility scooter and the batteries cost a fortune so I sympathise, bloody trouble I've had with them this year I could spit. I'm so glad you got yours sorted. Jack Daniels Mmm you're a woman of my own heart.
Oooh I do love a JD … yes batteries are a pain especially this time of year for us continuous cruisers, I’m hoping this will fix everything as I’ve gone from running my genny 4 hrs a day to once every 3 days 😄😄🏴☠️
The new battery seems to have done the trick with power for the boat. Always a good time to cheer with a sip of something you love. Greet vlog thanks. ❤️❤️❤️ Keith
having just found your channel I can honestly say that you are now my favourite canal vlogger. looking forward to watching your back catalogue of videos. thank you for your honesty and humour lol.
Thanks guys … I’ve gone from running my genny 4 hrs through the day to 1.5hr once every 3 days including binge watching Netflix, running the fridge freezer and laptop etc 😂😂 it’s a game changer … just watched you guys smack into the Erewash 😂😂 loved it haha I flew passed there when I did it, completely missed it and had to turn around and headed into it upstream which I think was easier 😄🏴☠️
A mother great blog Heidi you are a true boater, the cruise looked good on a winters day glad everything is working ok take care in the mud and always be fun
I do lots on my own but there are times when it's great to have someone checking in. Love it that the battery set up worked =-) Take care and bottom's up =-)
A really useful video. I'm buying my first boat in 2 days. It's never been out of a marina so I'm obsessing about solar, and batteries and 12v - I want to continuously cruise. I'll certainly look at this setup now. Thank you
You are best living with what you have first as your batteries maybe ok it’s just I live aboard all year round and running freezers and printers etc …. It’s worth joining the 12v boating group on Facebook too as they very helpful 😃🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Thanks, Heidi. I've signed up to the forum. Just waiting to see if I answered the question correctly 😊 I'm going to sit on the boat for a while and discover what I can before I make any big decisions (what's for tea, whether to get a tattoo, gin or wine etc.). I won't be too impatient. Looking forward to getting out onto the canals though. Thanks again, Royce
Great vlog! Really interested in that new battery and how it turns out (oh no, electronics engineer, fixated with brightly coloured wires and shiny things). Lithiums certainly seem to be a game changer in many ways. They seem hungry though, ravenous even. Its really going to pay off in the summer, no wasted solar, that battery will gobble it all up and you’ll be able to light the boat up like Blackpool seafront!
So glad you were being extra cautious and did lots of research . A fire would be devastating. Did you every check out one of those Jackery solar powered batteries ? Stay warm and safe . Keep your lovely vlogs coming ❤️
Good to see you . Glad everything worked out like you hoped. I love the British accent, but I have to admit when you first started talking about your "batry", I had no clue what you were referring to. I realized after a few minutes you were talking about your "bat ter y", which is how we pronounce it "across the pond". I've noticed that the British have a tendency to talk faster than we do and sometimes it is hard to follow, but I get the gist of things. Hey, take care, travel carefully and stay safe. Sandy from US
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Oh, don't take it personally as I find most all British have a tendency to talk fast. I still understand the gist of what your saying, so don't worry about it. Enjoy your videos and your sense of humor. Take care and travel safe.
Rosie and Jim have let themselves go... Thanks for a very informative video, looks like Lithium batteries are the way to go! Hopefully the prices will come down soon, but even so it's worth it for reducing the 'faff' in your life and of course your diesel usage. Look forward to hearing how you get on with it all. Cheers! ;-)
So far it’s been fantastic from running my genny 4 hrs at various stages in the day during winter, to just 1.5 hrs once every 3 days and I’m running a fridge freezer 😃🏴☠️
Is it there? as there was a mistake originally and it released all 3 tracks as one long track 😂 then it was in the process of removing it to put just stiff ripples … I think it may be the wrong version still … hopefully it will be fixed soon
Haha it’s the wrong version they are sorting it … wow that was weeks ago, last email I got was they were deleting and reuploading so wow who knows when it’s properly there 😂😂
Another fab Vlog Heidi…love the drinking game. It’s my kind of game ..CHEERS 🥃🥃 Have a fabulous week stay safe and happy cruising. Hugs to Pudding 💕🥰❤️
i,ve just finished catching up on all your back videos because i just recently found you and i,ve thoroughly enjoyed all of them and look forward to a new one each week. by the way if you are ever up north you will see that all the young uns go out wearing just t shirts especially in newcastle, not me though, getting too old for that.xx
I've made it onto the Oakwood pontoon only once and the cafe was lovely! But you're right, they'd get a LOT more custom if there was more space for visitors
Shiver me timbers you passed a pub. Whatever happened to the old pirate passtime of walking the plank? Good idea with the lithium battery they work well in electric cars so shouldn't be a problem afloat.
Love the vlog as always, just spent 3 days on the identical mooring at the flash frozen in last week (could see your pin holes!) I can think of worse places to be frozen in, take care.
Great video Heidi - I got some lithium batteries put in my boat a year ago, and although they are great, you do have to keep an eye on them. I had exactly the same problems as well- as soon as I started charging, the alternator overheated. I tried using a length of wire to restrict the current like you did, but my battery charger wasnt set up for lithiums, and it was still trying to charge them even though the voltage got dangerously high- so make sure you keep an eye on the voltage when charging, and not just the alternator temp. In the end I splashed £300 on a Sterling B2B charger, because that keeps the voltage down as well as the current. But it wasn't perfect either- its a long a complicated story, too boring for here. I'm sure you know this, but the alternator is a bit cooler when the engine's running faster. So if I'm staying still for a few days and just running the engine for a bit of charging, I turn up the rpm to say 1200 or so, and I can get more current out of the alternator without it overheating. I nearly fried my batteries by letting the voltage get too high though, so please keep an eye on the voltage when you charge- if you can, maybe set up a warning alarm or something to disconnect the charging when the voltage goes over a certain point. I went a bit mental and ended up with victron BMV712 units and big switches to cut off the charging. But the bottom line is these batteries are bloody brilliant- and even better, they soak up all the solar as well, so in summer they perform even better!
Hey Tony, did you go hybrid or full lithium ? My set up is very basic no high duel alternators etc so it was fairly easy and now the alternator doesn’t get above 55 but it’s now only putting an 20 amps … however with my 3 hr cruise today it still filled the lithium to 100 …. It’s made a massive difference from putting my genny in 4hrs a day (2hrs am and 2hrs pm) to now just running my genny for 1.5hrs once every 3 days 😂😂 it’s runs brilliant from my 60 amp battery charger than from the alternator … I know of others who have disconnected their alternator completely from the leisure’s and just charge from genny and solar
@@TheNarrowboatPirate I'm made up its working for you Heidi, nice one. Yes I went hybrid, but only in the sense that its a B2B setup. Because I have two alternators I also have two lead acid batteries, so that each lead acid battery is fed by one of the alternators. Then from each lead acid, the current runs into a B2B charger, and then into the batteries. So each alternator has its own charging setup with its own B2B- its all a but mad to be fair, but it works. But you do have to watch them. I read a thread on the Canal World forum, and they were saying things like this: 1. don't let them go up to 100% charged every day because the poor things find that a bit stressful, and you'll get less life out of them (like maybe 6 or 7 years instead of 10 years, say). 2. On a day to day basis, let them get up to about 80-90% charged, and then turn off the charging so they dont get stressed 3. Dont leave them at 100% for too long, make sure they are starting to discharge and get rid of some energy 4. Dont let them let get to a very low charge either, and certainly dont let them get down to 0% charged, as that could really damage them. 5. what will kill them instantly (apparently) is if the voltage goes over 15v, which is what my old alternator to battery charger was trying to do to them. 6. They like being around 50% most of them time, so cycle them between say 20-85% and you'll get 10 years out of them, with the odd run up to 100% (say every 2 or 3 weeks) I dont know how much of it is true so I hope no-one assassinates me in the comments, but these guys do seem to know what they're on about, and so far I've has mine for over a year with no major problems. You should be getting more than 20 amps into them though. I experimented and found that my alternators were rated at 100 amps, but could only give out 45 amps before overheating, because lithiums suck all the current up from the alternator, whereas lead acids resist the charge a bit, and that keeps the alternator from putting out too much current. Bear in mind you might only be getting 20 amps because the charger has moved into float mode maybe? Or maybe you need a bigger cable, or the same width but a slightly shorter length? I tried all sorts with mine, but I couldnt control the voltage so I ended up going for the B2Bs to protect the batteries from high voltage- after all, these are a ten year investment, right? You want to take care of them. I even keep mine inside the cabin (because apparently you can damage them if you run the engine and try to charge them at low temps, like say 2 degrees or less- but nobody really seems to agree on the exact figures at the moment. I have considered reading bedtime stories to them, but so far it hasnt come to that. Also keep an eye on the temp of the charging wires- thinner cable can get a bit hot if the alternator is trying to push a big current through it, and it acts as a resistor. Its probably ok, but its always worth having a feel (that's from the Heidi innuendo book). Its a minefield, but they are really worth it in my view. I also splashed out on more panels at the start of sept, so I now have 1400w, and I didnt need to run the engine once (for charging) until mid october. I'm hoping between April and August there'll be enough extra power to get hot water from it, without having to run the engine. Solar's where its at Heidi! 😀
Thanks for all the info … yes I have made lots of settings in my BMS as was advised by the 12v group … I’ve got another 4 hr cruise tomorrow too so I’ll just turn it off as i’m at 87% …. We keep checking the temp and cable … I extended my cable loads and it hasn’t got warm yet luckily but I’ve never cruised with the lithium switched off although my friend always turns his off when cruising so I’ll test it tomorrow 😃😃 my alternator is only 55 amp anyway and extending that cable and reducing to 6mm only allows the lithium to take a small amount …. I know in the 12v boating group it seems the once’s with fancier high end alternators have more problems … thanks for all your help 😃😃
@@TheNarrowboatPirate , good luck with the new batteries. Its kind of a shame that you can only charge at 20 amps. You would think you might get a continuous 30 amps out of a 55 amp alternator without it getting too hot. It doesnt sound that much of a difference but its a 50% increase, and that means a lot less engine running hours. Its all fine if you're out cruising for 4 hours a day anyway, but when you are staying still for a few days, a decent charging current is a real help, as it means much less engine running time. Before I got my lithiums I was running the engine for 4 hours a day in the autumn and winter, but now I get all my charging done in less than an hour. The big difference to remember with lithiums is that when they are full (or even 90%), you need to stop charging them. Lead acids can get charged all day on an 8 hour cruise with no problem, but if you overfill lithiums you can damage them, particularly if the battery voltage gets too high. But it sounds like you've got it pretty well sorted. If you do feel that more charging current would be helpful (and it would save some fuel), an alternator upgrade is another thing that might help, but to be fair they can cost four or five hundred quid. Youi need to get rid of that steam engine mate 😀
Do you ever use the engine de-compressor levers in the top of your engine when starting a cold engine? Make's a big difference to battery life. As engine spins over with no compression in the cylinders, knock one lever over then the second.
Yes but maybe I should do it more often … It’s so bloody hot in that room because this time of year I’ve got the fire going in the back cabin too so didn’t think it was needed but maybe you are right 😃🏴☠️
Unfortunately I can’t run the 2 alternators with my engine, it’s a 1969 slow revving lister HR2 … also the engine is mostly in idle mode as Narrowboats cruise between 2-4 mph, which is why lots of yacht and boaters go the lithium hybrid method … lithium gobbles up the power much quicker than lead acid, so would need to change everything else to accommodate a full lithium set up inc solar controllers etc and would be a very expensive and costly set up … hybrid solves all this 😃
The problem with the longer thin wire way of moderating charging lithium is that it charges slower and slower the more full the battery gets - you might never get it fully charged - Renogy make a much cheaper DC to DC charger than Victron in 20, 40 & 60amp versions I have one on my motor home - it will charge your lithium battery faster and in the correct charging profile. 😂😂 I bet it would make me sleep well too 😂🏴☠️
Haha love the new game. Great video glad the new battery set up worked out for you.
Thank you 😃🏴☠️
Good game I’m watching you at 1.15 am got my vodka and coke every time you had a drink I joined you don’t have many narrow boats passing through Mansfield 😂😂
I know I’m going to have to adapt it as I only passed one moving boat yesterday 😂😂
I must say I can hardly wait till Thursday to see your new post. As always enjoyed it immensely. Please hug that Pug.
Thanks Bill 😄🏴☠️
Hello Heidi - greetings from Poland
I'm so pleased for you that your new lithium battery is such a success. Having to not run your engine to boost your battery power is not only easier for you, but you save money on diesel,
I love your new game - "cheers to passing boats". The problem is, like me, when you drink Jack Daniels, your voice changes! When reading out the names of the new crew members, it went up up about 5 octaves! Stick to the rum girl.
A fabulous video. Thank you so much for being you. You put a smile on my face. Stay safe please
😂😂 oh yes the lithium hybrid set up is fabulous and saving me in lots of diesel 😃🏴☠️ saying cheers is keeping me sane on these cruises haha 😂
Snot cam is the best cam! haha Cheeers.... a few times at least. Big Squishy hugs from Nova Scotia Canada - Thank you for all that you do. I appreciate you and your channel very much
Thank you ❤️ I am glad you are enjoying the videos 😃🏴☠️
Yeah !!! We want to know what Rosie was doing to Jim ?? Whatever it was it put a smile on his face 😂 , Take care lovely, Cheers ! ☺
😂😂 thank you … them rag dolls can be very naughty at times 😂🏴☠️
You just passed some moving swans... so, cheers to them, too.
😂😂
Lithium helps! Cheers from across the pond 🇱🇷
Thanks Jeff, yes loving them so far 😄🏴☠️
Loved this video, so funny, so non-nerdy. Glad it worked out well. Love, love Puddin'. Maybe have a nip when anything floats on the cut, not just boats, but swans, ducks... Greetings from British Columbia.
I’ll be falling off the back of the boat 😂😂 I was very disappointed today as only one boat passed me 😂😂🏴☠️
I love the sound of your Lister. It always puts me in a good mood.
😂😂 I usually can’t wait to turn the noisy bugger off after 4 hrs cruising 😂🏴☠️
Hi Heidi loving the different angle camera shots it's great to see the boat from a different prospective and as far as the technical side of boats i love that side of it, so more please. And as usual you made me laugh particularly at the end with Rosie and Jim...... That was hilarious 😂
Hahaha thanks 😂😂 yes I’m loving my huge pole 😂😂
@@TheNarrowboatPirate you are naughty but i like it.... Ha ha
That's me...T shirt till -5C...I work in retail supplying bars and restaurants with wine and spirits...Jack D fire has been in short supply for weeks... Nice and warm in Ontario today...4C!
Canal frozen here 😂😂🏴☠️
That was a fairly technical one Heidi and fair play to your dad sorting it out. And I was also wondering how many gallons of grog that hip flask of yours holds?
😂😂 loads but I only let it wet the lips, I don’t gulp it … I couldn’t cope LOL 😂
Thanks Keith 😃🏴☠️
having just found your channel I can honestly say that you are now my favourite canal vlogger. looking forward to watching your back catalogue of videos. thank you for your honesty and humour lol.
Aww thanks so much 😄😄 they started so well and then went down hill very quickly 😂😂 enjoy 🏴☠️
Looked like a lovely cruise
It was but very cold 😃🏴☠️
Fantastic news about how well the lithium battery performed!!
Love to all three of you xxxx♥️
Thanks Carole 😄🏴☠️❤️
Fab vlog. Should be fun in the summer having a cheers every time a boat goes past. 😂 Steve always wears a T shirt and I have a jumper on.
Haha I couldn’t play it in the summer, I would be unconscious after 5 mins 😂 yes I know T-shirts in this weather … it’s not right 😂😂🏴☠️
I think you passed Oakwood Marina, the tea room is good. Been for breakfast a few times. Very good 👍
Yes I’m dying to try it 😄🏴☠️
Binge watching - again!! Love you and all your travels and experiences. Watching from South Carolina, USA….. ❤️ 🏴☠️
That bat set up looks good
Thanks Robin 😄🏴☠️
Love the new puddin into 😂 made us laugh!
That new setup is looking very flash 🔋🤩 might have to look into it too! Thanks for the info! Great video 😊
@@TheNarrowboatPirate omg that sounds amazing!! We need to look into it for sure! 😲
Are you sure it's ok to parallel Lithium and Lead batteries? I thought Lithium batteries were much fussier about their charging.
Yes this is why lots of boaters and van lifers have opted for the hybrid set up 😃
You just don’t want to DIE on your own! Cmon Jax😂
Love he doll animation 🤣🤣 Do you cheat at the drinking game by letting a boat pass you then catch up and pass it ? 🤔😉 I know I would 🤣

I wouldn't half mind a bit of a nerdy vlog on that setup+ how are you doing with the Jackery 💪👍🤗
Absolutely love my jackery! I don’t know how I coped without it … I use it every day 😄🏴☠️
A really useful video.
Hilarious! And the end made me roar laughing! Great news about the success of your lithium battery - what a fab Dad you have 😁

😂😂 yes it’s amazing so far, I’m loving it 😃🏴☠️
2:58 what's that flame coming out the top of your head❓ good informative vlog 👍 new game 3 sheets to the wind 🙂

So glad you were being extra cautious and did lots of research . A fire would be devastating. Did you every check out one of those Jackery solar powered batteries ? Stay warm and safe . Keep your lovely vlogs coming ❤️
Yes I have a jackery and did a video on it previously 😄🏴☠️
Good to see you . Glad everything worked out like you hoped. I love the British accent, but I have to admit when you first started talking about your "batry", I had no clue what you were referring to. I realized after a few minutes you were talking about your "bat ter y", which is how we pronounce it "across the pond". I've noticed that the British have a tendency to talk faster than we do and sometimes it is hard to follow, but I get the gist of things. Hey, take care, travel carefully and stay safe. Sandy from US
Aww sorry Sandy, I’ll try to talk slower … I get excited and speed up 😂😂🏴☠️
@@TheNarrowboatPirate Oh, don't take it personally as I find most all British have a tendency to talk fast.
Cheers! ;-)

Great to see your Stiff Ripples this morning …as a new release on Spotify 😊
Is it there? as there was a mistake originally and it released all 3 tracks as one long track 😂 then it was in the process of removing it to put just stiff ripples … I think it may be the wrong version still … hopefully it will be fixed soon

@@TheNarrowboatPirate as a retired electrical engineer I am amazed that you dealt with your batteries us dad's are handy to call on .
Hi did you have to adjust your solar set up when you added a lithium battery.? Great video
No need with hybrid set up … that’s why lots of boaters and van lifers are doing it 😃 obviously it all depends on your original setup to start with
Love the vlog as always, just spent 3 days on the identical mooring at the flash frozen in last week (could see your pin holes!) I can think of worse places to be frozen in, take care.
Awww Keith, sorry I missed you 😄🏴☠️

Never know you could add a lithium battery to a regular lead acid set up. Even a old sea dog like I can learn something new😮
It’s a hybrid but it’s lifepo4 lithium not lithium ion 😄🏴☠️
You know what you need? A rubber bib n brace apron to below the knees😂
I read a thread on the Canal World forum, and they were saying things like this:
1. don't let them go up to 100% charged every day because the poor things find that a bit stressful, and you'll get less life out of them (like maybe 6 or 7 years instead of 10 years, say).
2. On a day to day basis, let them get up to about 80-90% charged, and then turn off the charging so they dont get stressed
3. Dont leave them at 100% for too long, make sure they are starting to discharge and get rid of some energy
4. Dont let them let get to a very low charge either, and certainly dont let them get down to 0% charged, as that could really damage them.
5. what will kill them instantly (apparently) is if the voltage goes over 15v, which is what my old alternator to battery charger was trying to do to them.
6. They like being around 50% most of them time, so cycle them between say 20-85% and you'll get 10 years out of them, with the odd run up to 100% (say every 2 or 3 weeks)
I dont know how much of it is true so I hope no-one assassinates me in the comments, but these guys do seem to know what they're on about, and so far I've has mine for over a year with no major problems.
I have 630 watts of solar but hardly getting anything this time of year but it keeps everything going April to Oct 😃😃🏴☠️
Absolutely hilarious and informative all at once, thank you and cheers 🍻
😂😂 thank you 🏴☠️🥃❤️
Do you ever use the engine de-compressor levers in the top of your engine when starting a cold engine? Make's a big difference to battery life. As engine spins over with no compression in the cylinders, knock one lever over then the second.
Yes but maybe I should do it more often … It’s so bloody hot in that room because this time of year I’ve got the fire going in the back cabin too so didn’t think it was needed but maybe you are right 😃🏴☠️
It might be the best option for you is to add another alternator to charge just that battery. All our ambulance here in Canada have that set up .
Unfortunately I can’t run the 2 alternators with my engine, it’s a 1969 slow revving lister HR2 … also the engine is mostly in idle mode as Narrowboats cruise between 2-4 mph, which is why lots of yacht and boaters go the lithium hybrid method … lithium gobbles up the power much quicker than lead acid, so would need to change everything else to accommodate a full lithium set up inc solar controllers etc and would be a very expensive and costly set up … hybrid solves all this 😃
great
