    I disagree about Yuna just being a love interest. She is a wonderful character that is feminine yet strong in her resolve and will. She faces the most difficult challenges with a smile for others benefit and not her own. She isn't there just for Tidus to get with. It happens naturally and to me is believable these two would connect and if anything Yuna is the driving force with the narrative focusing around her so I disagree with the take she's just a love interest as she's so much more and affects every party member differently with their unique relationships with her.

    • @orihalchon
      @orihalchon 6 дней назад

      Thank you. That was hard to watch. Rinoa i can understand, but seeing her just reducing Yuna and Garnet to just be a "love interest" (just because they happened to love someone which is the case) and therefore not a great women, and liking Lightning because of the lack of it, just spine-chillingly rubs me the wrong way about her as a person. Like even Quistis that she looks up to would beg to differ - until the ending, _she wanted to be the love interest._

    • @NeoLotex
      @NeoLotex 6 дней назад +8

      Right? I mean the game is basically about her, but from his POV. Without him the game would still work, but without her 3/4 or more wouldn't make sense.

    • @Postumeartist

      Agreed. They actually have a lot in common, but enough different to learn from each other and grow together. They’re pretty solid. I love 8 and I love squall and rinoa, but they mostly got together because it was fate and because she wore him down and called him out. It’s good but there are far worse ff couples than tuna.

      Based on the comments about having a strong female lead to *identify* with though, the lack of them in 15 and 16 particularly, I think the issue is a little blurred regarding what is meant by "just a love interest." Yuna is a great character who is very hard to fully identify with - passive but powerful, and all her work is done offscreen - we don't see her train, we don't see her learn, we don't see the mechanics of her trade really. They imply it well and they really convey the depth of emotion (and framing it from Tidus' POV allows them to get away with it) but depending on how you approach it, Yuna is a little secondary to what the game needs her for.
      I have no idea if I've managed to explain my thoughts at all lol. I personally think they did the right thing, it's good to write stories with a specific point of view, and that means it can't be everything to everyone. (For what it's worth, I don't really think FFX has male characters to identify with either, lol. I don't think that's a weakness.)

      No, I agree, Yuna is definitely the protagonist.

    It's true that the first one you play holds a special place in your heart. My first Playstation era FF was also Final Fantasy VIII and I couldn't understand why people preferred VII. The limit breaks, cutscenes, GF attacks, soundtrack, world, characters (I had a crush on Quistis), Laguna/Kiros/Ward being a fun side story, etc. etc. FFVII felt ancient when I decided to finally try it afterwards. To be fair though, I fell in love with VII too, and it's one of the first games I tried to 100% (got close, but missed some blue magics lol).

      A lot of people's favorite FF is the first one they played but not me. 7 was the first I played. I played it so many times. It was great for its time, but I just can't go back to it in modern times (don't care much about the remake). 8 was the first I owned and it was my second favorite. A lot of people love 9 but I find it a bit clunky or sluggish (it took so long between input and the character acting that I had to predict or make a wrong move). X is my favorite. I think it is a masterpiece.

      Honestly??? Why can't we just all agree that ALL of them are just top tier from FFVI-FFX. I honestly can't even decide which of the 5, sometimes, I actually like more. It's like the one that is my fav is the one I am currently playing or focused on. But then as soon as I pop in, say, FFX after FFVIII, suddenly FFX is my fav. Now I'm playing FFVI and I'm just stunned. They are ALL 10/10 to me. ALL 5 of these.

    FFVIII is still my favourite video game of all time. I played VII first but it just didn't grab me. But VIII came at a time when I really needed it and it is quite literally my comfort blanket game. It introduced me to walkthroughs, online communities, fanfiction - in some ways, to my entire on-line life as it is today! It isn't an overstatement to say I owe it my sanity and many of my pleasures. I was so excited when the remaster came out. There seems to be a lot of interest in VIII at the moment (Hollie and Ben as celebrity fans, FFUnion's complete timeline, Alleyway Jack and Game Dove delving into specific areas of the game) - will SE listen to fans and give us an actual remake? Especially now that Hollie works for them!

    • @ASteveVaiFan
      @ASteveVaiFan 5 дней назад +1

      "Comfort blanket" is such a great way to say it. Balamb Garden is the best "safe haven" kind of trope I've ever experienced (even though it isn't always safe!). The music there and in Fisherman's Horizon is so soothing and peaceful.

    The flaw of the junction system isnt that people didnt know how to use it. It was a creative system. The problem was it discouraged using magic. FF fans like magic...good game tho

    • @nikkeli3942
      @nikkeli3942 7 дней назад +13

      The whole enemies level up with you discouraged battling altogether. The fact that the easiest strategies involve you fleeing every combat encounter and trading in triple triad cards for magic just seems a bit silly to me. Yes I do cherish the game for it's fantastic characters, story and amazing music, but the gameplay really pushes me away.

    • @cristianhakansson7443

      Also, drawing isn't fun. If the system incentivizes something, it should preferably incentivize something that is fun to actually do.

    • @rkfakes
      @rkfakes 7 дней назад +10

      I disagree with all 3 comments. Gamers who got into FF but started with an earlier one either learned magic by just leveling up or equipping something for one spell. 8 falls into the same category as 12. Those who didnt understand the Gambit System also struggled with the junction System so the game was difficult for them until they looked up Tips and all of a sudden it became too easy. But seriously, yall were also looking up how to beat the weapons in 7 and what materia combinations work well.
      Even when i play 8 now, im still leveling my characters to 100 early on, simply because spells and items that you get earlier while still being stronger as all the enemies by a mile. The only time you are ever in danger is when the Red dragon uses its breath.
      And drawing is just a stat increasing System. Noone says you have to do it just like noone ever told you to Max out materia to duplicate them which took much longer. If you freely want to use magic, then do it! Its not like you cant Max out your stats to 255 in this game with just 1 drawn spell junctioned later on. Junction spells you dont care about and then just use the ones you want to use. With 300 of every offensive spells in your Investory you have more than enough magic to finish the whole game twice so there really is no need to hold on to it.

    • @usuariofuturista
      @usuariofuturista 7 дней назад +9

      It doesnt discourage using magic, is the min maxer mentality and same fear that makes people hoard items. I played it a dozen times, just use the spells, no way you use them so much it hurts your stats before you can replenish them with the myriad options you get to do it. I think the issue was western audiences, there is a reason why square sent the easy mode version of FF4 to the west, those people are impatient and not very bright.

      Also most magic has 3 levels. If you have a character with HP-j then junction curaga to that and use cure and cura with that character if you have to and then have another character without hp-j cast curaga as your main healer. Same with all other magic.

I played them all over 30 years ago yet they all remain in my memory so vividly, it might as well have been yesterday. And it's not just me... I agree with a lot of things here. I also skipped VII and went straight to VIII. The teenagers were for me somehow relatable. Squall just wanted to be alone, Selphie wanted friends and so on. I liked the characters. But strong women??? Where?
    On introduction and on the surface that might seem that way, but nearly every major woman in that game wants to be rescued by a hero at some point.
    Let's start at the beginning. We are introduced to Quistis who is this tough teacher, that gives Seipher crap (or flat out bullies him) having flunked the tests a couple of times by now. Just a few (gameplay) hours later, she admits to Squall, that she is totally lost in this teacher role and quit and needs him to be there for her. She is opening up about her feelings to someone who has been her student just moments ago. Red flags everywhere! (Yes, I know... They have history... But they don't remember that!)
    Selphie. Well... She stands her ground and although it has been some time, since I last played, I cannot remember her being extraordinary brave nor extraordinary whiny.
    Rinoa. Gets introduced as this young woman who knows her way around the world and basically seduces Squall. Well done. After CD1 (or so), it is all about protecting her, because she has magic powers now???
    I could go on, but let's just say that Dr. Kadowaki was the only real tough woman in that game.
    Another note to be fair: these teenage boys and men were not so much better. Squall complains all the time, that everybody is looking up to him (and I as well have no idea why anyone would), Seipher is so full of himself, that it makes you sick, Xell has probably undiagnosed ADHD, Professor Cid is afraid of his own wife and Squalls bio dad can't think about talking to women without getting cramps.
    In conclusion: All characters are deeply insecure, vulnerable and rely on help from others. That is what makes them relatable and to their (or the writers) credit, they carry on regardless of their fears and insecurities.

    Shame she has very bad takes on the female characters (Rinoa and Yuna in particular, and instead preferingf someone like Quistis) because of their (in her eyes) seemingly traditional feminine roles. Someone else in the comment section already explains why Yuna is far more than a love interest, wont repeat it again. As for Rinoa, she elevates Squall to step to the forefront and encourage him to be best version of himself. She is uplifting and has very good social skills, traits I think are more interesting and in way more powerful than being a stoic unemotional character like Quistis. Just a shame these modern feminist tropes always causes to dismiss and overlook positive human traits and ending up seeing only more stoic, rational character traits as being strong, and anything else as weak or less, a very flawed way of thinking.

      it's because women that aren't typical is very rare in games. So they attract women who likes to be more individualistic. The days they start being equally prevalent and seen more in games are the days their appeal will drop cause it is seen as normal.

    I find it so weird... when I was a freshmen in college FF8 came out and my roommate bought it launch day. We both played it sooo much and we were absolutely hooked on it! I have played through FF8 more times than any other FF game, hell any game period aside from vanilla wow. I have re-leveled 1-60 sooo sooo many times lol.
    But its not a perfect game... I have literally fallen asleep every single playthrough drawing from biggs and wedge lol.
    In fact I wouldn't even call it my favorite entry, that goes to FFX. Me and FFX have a LOT of history lol and it spans across both of my marriages lol

      @canalultimateattack3169 5 дней назад

      Besides maybe a few esuna at the beginning and reflect later (which can be fast), there's not much to draw from Wedge and Biggs. It's weird that you don't fall asleep in FFX which is a big and tiresome game.

    • @TaraKaos

      @canalultimateattack3169 Well in fairness when I play through FFX I use the mod to share AP. It massively speeds up grinding and really lets me focus on the story.
      In ff8 I fall asleep drawing from them all the time. But I'm very much a completionist power gamer 😂. So when we get to Biggs and wedge I spend so much time drawing out 99 reflect/Regen/haste. I know it's not necessary and it's much easier to just get those later lol. But I'd rather get it out of the way early and feel OP.

      @ ah, so you used a third party add on to make FFX better? I see...
      In FF8 you can get overpower with much less than that, and the cap is actually 100, not 99.

    FF8 is still my childhood and personal favorite FF.. It's one of the few FF games where you can replay it many times and you can still see it differently compared to the first playthrough with hidden mechanics and choices you somewhat made. Subtle but it's there sort of deal.. Destroying the X-ATM092 is not something you would know the first time.. It's one of the FF games that tried something new to make it fun which fair play before going back to traditional MP..

    FF8 is counter intuitive to rpg players. Its telling that a woman who never played jrpgs before 8, sees no flaws with ff8 mechanic choices.
    Not to say its bad but its really experimental. I didnt mind it but i can see how people didnt jive with it.

    • @DengusK
      @DengusK 4 дня назад

      The flaws that exist in FF8 exist in other games. It's hard to think of a FF except for maybe 4 that doesn't have major mechanics issues.
      Almost every issue someone has with the junction or draw systems can be circumvented completely if you actually engage with the game's systems.

    • @colinnixon7739
      @colinnixon7739 4 дня назад +1

      @DengusK I'm not sure what your point is? FF8 is not a typical jrpg. It has systems that are counterintuitive to jrpg players. A small example, casting a junctioned magic makes your character worse. In what game does casting magic effect anything but your MP? Most people will run into the same issue of junctioning a magic and seeing the stat go up and then never checking it ever again not knowing their stats are going up and down with every cast and draw.
      The amount of tutorials menus, sub menus and sub sub menus in FF8 is ridiculous. Witout a guide and seeing (Elem-DEFx2) pop up randomly a 7 year old kid might not know what is and that it's only unlocked and not automatically applied, you have to "equip" your buffs.
      Most jrpgs are easy to learn and difficult to master. FF8 is the exact opposite.

      @NAzo. 5 дней назад +1

      There's no revision going on. It is literally bad. The localization if you have zero clue (which you do judging by your ignorant comment) was atrocious. In addition, the FF8 that we received was after it was massively cut (just how FF15 underwent) from the original concept Kitase wanted to tell. In that version Laguna was one of the main characters of the game. This also explains that terrible "reveals" later on in the game that came out of no where.

    4:02 It's been a while since I have played but Quistis takes Squall to a make out spot in one of the first scenes in the game, calls him her star student, and memorizes his speaking patterns. She's definitely proposed to be someone who is attracted to Squall. Welcome to anime. A lot of Japanese properties do this. Even if they aren't explicitly in a relationship, female characters always have a way of making sure the players know that they are interested in the main character just in case the player is more attracted to that character than they are the main love interest.
    Terra is probably the better example of a character that is not purely the love interest of a male protagonist.

    I'm honestly shocked that no one has given the Junction System another shot. It's a brilliant system that didn't get a chance to be well executed thanks to the game's hellish development.

    • @lens_hunter
      @lens_hunter 7 дней назад

      The problem with the junction system is that you basically couldn't use the magic you used for junctioning or your stats or resistances would drop. The game basically just becomes junction to max your stats, and use Attack over and over. Once you get Aura, spam limit breaks. The game is extremely dull if you understand the junction system fully.

    • @LoneGamerNerd
      @LoneGamerNerd 7 дней назад

      @@lens_hunter That is true, but your stats don't drop until you've cast the affiliated spell, like...at _least_ 5 times. Also, because every major boss aside from Seifer -- if you count him -- was resistant to magic anyway, being extremely powerful mages. So it makes sense in that regard.
      Either way, the notion that you couldn't cast spells was a serious miscomprehension and a weird mentality people still carry on with 25 years later. That's literally why the game has the refine method; it's so easy tor restock your spells and regain your stats as a result. Also, unless you're a serious spellcaster, using magic every few seconds, this isn't an issue. I always just junction spells I don't plan on casting while my spellcasters, typically the women in the party as they have the highest magic stats by default, are free to cast whatever they please.
      I mean, who's going around using spells like Firaga and Thundaga an excessive amount anyway? Most enemies are weak to Ice magic, so the former two are safe to junction. Zell and Irvine never use magic when I play because they're so bad with it that I have them junctioning spells as powerful as Ultima and Quake.
      There is a variety of ways to go about it and, at this point in time, all these years later, people really should start to notice this.

      Junction is fair. Just they should not relate on GF. GF Equiping cause more problems than junction. And Item command too. Both junction and Item should not rely on GF. It seem like GF hold items bag for each peolple. That I'm not agree, Player should hold them and use on their own.
