I’ve had the “which is your favourite FF?” conversation many times and only met one other person who said 8, I feel validated having Ben Starr and now Neil in my corner! I loved the discussion about Seifer (they say more on the full podcast, definitely worth a listen if you enjoyed this.) He often gets written off as ‘the bully,’ but his story was one of the most interesting parts of the games for me. I always felt Garden somewhat failed him, and the way Xu spoke to him in the hallway scene as a senior was degrading, cruel and unprofessional. Small detail I noticed is that Seifer tells Squall he hates dogs in Dollet, then later Squall calls him “the sorceress’ lap dog.” Savage. Also an FYI on Zell and the library girl with a crush on him, apparently a lot of people missed that she sat with him in the ending. Sooo…. Maybe…?
When Final Fantasy 14 released Gunbreaker with Gunblades for its class I was over the moon for the class. FFVIII still remains my favorite of the series
i will agree 100%. specially gunbreaker being a tank job! (since i usually play tanks in mmo's). Would be awesome to see Neil as Seifer in a potential remake!
I just love VI through to X so much. They're all very special to me in their own ways. It's hard to pick a fave but I do think VIII has some of the best music Uematsu ever made
Man With A Machine Gun is definitely one of my favourite battle themes. And I remain incapable of going to the beach without hearing "FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC" *dundundundun* in my head.
Glad that he loves it! FFVIII is my fav game of all time! I love anime, expecially from the 90s. But one of the reasons why I love FFVIII is that it doesn't (really) feel or look like anime. And the mixture of fantasy and realism is fantastic. Plus for me FF VIII soundtrack is the finest work of Nobuo Uematsu
8 has always been my favorite. It's really cool to hear someone talk about the characters as I have growing up, that you felt how the they did and related and empathize with Squall and his crew.
Astarion being the voice of Squall? That would be really interesting. VIII is the perfect candidate for a videogame that could really benefit from a remake, make it happen Square!
@kaitoudark1 But not every actor is good for every role. I've heard him in Baulders Gate and Village. Neither voice would work for Squall. If he can do a voice that fits then fine. But redneck werewolf and gay vampire ain't it.
FF8 was the first to always show the characters with realistic anatomy proportions in game, instead of the chibi versions you had on FF7 (which looked awkward for me), and it was really cinematic and the music score was incredible all throughout the game, my favorite of the series.
Final Fantasy VIII was the title that I related to on a personal level and to this day is still my favorite. It's so deserving of a remake but it's the shunned title of the group.
He’d be GREAT as Seifer lol it might just be me, but I personally think that he has a pretty similar voice quality to that of Takehito Koyasu’s, who got cast as Seifer’s JP voice
@ right ? the entire JP VAs for FF VIII we know so far have been phenomenal imo, I rly hope this game gets the proper remake it so deserves. Although RIP Atsuko Tanaka as she was Ulti’s JP VA :(
I could really appreciate this game now as a grown up but when I first played it as a kid, I really hate how unnecessarily complicated the gameplay is. It hurt my brain so much. 😅 I always thought this game is for grown ups. It’s just so unfortunate that it took this long long time for me to actually see the brilliance of this game. It’s the realization that grinding is almost totally unnecessary. I avoid gaining levels just so I can save it until I get all the GF abilities that give status bonuses. I only grind for APs and maintaining my SeeD rank. That’s what made me think that this game is ahead of its time. You really need to figure out how to actually play this game to be able to appreciate it. Unfortunately, a lot of the mechanics are never actually explained in the game. It’s such a misunderstood game. But I think this is definitely one game that deserves a remake so that it can fix its interesting gameplay concepts.
@@Jed-Rix Yeah, the junction system is unnecessarily overcomplicated and not explained well. You can't just expect JRPG players to intuitively know not to grind. Once you get the hang of it however and embrace triple triad and start converting the right cards into spells the game becomes trivial, and is even really fun to exploit.
FF8 was my first of the series and will always be my favorite from the PS1 era. I really enjoyed 7 and 9. Yes, 7 is great. But I've never understood why 8 is so underrated....
Pretty sure Zell's mom had Zell's card... Even if he's adopted, I hope she didn't have a crush on him. 😅 I think one of the member's of Quistis's fan club had her card, so that could fit.
When did Cloud go around saying i'm the good guy? He was a overconfident prick in the beginning and then after aerith a depressed emo and then gains a little mojo back to a semi confident unwilling hero by the end
Saying VII is just about just being the good guy…You mean the story about environmentalism, dissociative idendity disorder, and dealing with death and grief? Did we play the same game?
@@benabaxter I’ve played VIII countless times and love it too. I do think it deals with different themes than VII, but they are both fantastic in their own ways. VII’s depiction of Cloud’s mental struggle was groundbreaking for the time so I just think describing it as a game about “Oh I’m the good guy” is pretty disrespectful to its legacy.
@@sammykneen Good to know you've played them a lot. So have I! I meant my initial reply as only a recommendation, not a correction! What Seven did well, Eight did better. "If you liked ... you'll love ..." Since you're here, curious for your input: I'd put money on Celes in World of Ruin (from Six) as a better example of psychological character writing in the series. Heck, the transition to Six in the industrialized world sapping the world of magic is about as environmental as Seven gets, and that's present from the first moment Terra (her name is TERRA) is portrayed as a brainwashed slave in a mech suit. Celes takes over in the second half of the game and does what she does in that game. So far as it is explicitly psychological, that I'll give to Seven. Still, I maintain that Eight *is* the legacy of Cloud's false memories in a way that even Disc 3 of Seven isn't. Eight is the first legacy of Seven, even as it is experimental in a lot of ways. (Eight carries forward plenty from the series mechanically, too. GFs are a logical extensions of the Six AP system and the Seven materia system, with the strengths and weaknesses of both.)
@benabaxter i grew up on 7 and have played it several times throughout the years, played 8 and 6 for the first time somewhat recently. 8 to me just didn't feel like it had very many impactful story moments like 6 or 7 had. Between losing in 6 and the entire world getting literally destroyed, and then 7 with the plate falling and losing your friends, sephiroth killing everyone in Shinra tower, aerith at the end of disc 1, cait sith in the temple, cloud handing over the black materia to sephiroth and all of the weapons waking up to defend the planet.... everything just felt like it carried so much more weight to it in those games in my opinion. I never felt that sort of intensity from 8. But I may go back and replay 8 just to see if it was just me being weird. Lol
VIII's glaring issue for me wasn't the -and let's be honest it is- wacky story, it was the characters. Half of them just felt pointless and added nothing to the story, which was a damn shame.
Not true, plenty of good characterization in VIII. In many respects its way more mature than 7 (minus the high school students save the world stuff ). You should revisit it, has a ton of character growth and touching moments. The story itself is still mega wacky even for ff standards though lmao

I loved viii, but found that it is just hugely under appreciated by a lot of players. I'm really glad he saw a lot of what I did in it back then too.

VIII hands down has the best ost, pretty sure everyone agrees there
Absolute 📠
I think he would fit as Irvine personally

Squall would not sound good a gay vampire.
Actors can do different voices and deliveries y'know.

Agree. This is the title they should be remaking instead of 7, but alas money talks. So much potential for a great VIII remake imo.

Wonder if anyone has ever (or will ever) make a compilation showing all the times Neil Newbon has secretly winked as his characters in motion capture.
So glad the discourse around FF8 has shifted away from the negative echo chamber the fandom has created.
Give this man, Squall!
i would love to see Neil Newbon as Irvine Kinneas
Final Fantasy 8 is the best one 🎉
8 is in my top 5. Love it to bits
While X is my all time favorite in the franchise VIII is my 2nd fav hands down.
X is so good man, I get emotional every time I play that game lol. People misunderstand the VA in that game, Tidus being cringe is kind of the point.
VIII did a lot of things right, some missteps but overall an underappreciated game.

Thanks.
every voice actor loves ff8 lol. lets get it voice acted then
Shame the gun blade thing didn't spread. Change to your sai arm, duelists berettas, a claymore that blows up every time you use it
13 had a gunblade
Also in 14. But yeah, would've been great to see it more in the single player FF titles.
@@natersby I think it works well as a unique weapon that way. Squall and lightning are very similar people so there may be symbolism there
FF8 is the 🐐
please for the love of squall remake ff8

Game is old, probably forgot a lot about it, or he's getting confused with another final fantasy maybe
Dude, if you like that about VII, you should revisit VIII. It's what Mideel should have been. Cloud got over his stuff basically immediately.

8 remake
He sounded like Chris Martin
I will agree about FF8, I just don't like most of the characters. The only party members I love are Quistis and Selphie.
Im a good guy? 😂this guy only played 7 when he was a child it seems
FF8 was also a rushed mess by the end. Fell apart harder than KOTOR 2

I've heard two voices from this guy and neither sounds good for Squall. Sorry buddy. 😂
