There's not a lot of dimming thermostats out there right now and buying two of these was much cheaper than buying one of the us brands. I was a little sketched out since it was only offered on eBay but this video helped with that. I really like that they have a light timer! These confused the hell out of me until I discovered that all of those sold to me were wired in reverse polarity. They failed on as a result of this if anything was plugged while running, which included pumps and items with an earth pin. Once they failed, that was it. Repairing them is a simple matter of opening the unit and fixing the obvious polarity problem, active to neutral and neutral to active. The damaged timers will still work but with a short between the timer circuits causing the ramp circuit to be always on if L2 was on. Best to turf it and get another timer, fix the polarity and set up using the instructions above.

    I have the same model. I´m sorry to say that your guide is partly incorrect. L1 and L2 has nothing to do with the plugs.
    Here is how it works:
    Plug 1 is for HEATING
    - Daytime FROM is when Daytime Temperature begins
    - Daytime TO is when Nighttime Temperature begins
    Plug 2 is for LIGHT
    (You can choose up to 2 periods daily where the light should be switched on.)
    - L1 FROM and TO is the first period with light on
    - L2 FROM and TO is the second period with light on
    You can choose to only use one period with light on. In that case set L2 FROM and TO to equal values and L1 FROM and TO to the times when the light should be turned on and off. Works the other way round too, meaning same values for L1 and different values for L2. To have the light never turned on, same values for L1 FROM and TO and same values for L2 FROM and TO, or simply don´t use plug 2 ;-)
    Hope this helps.

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  3 года назад +1

      Thanks mate. That makes more sense. The funny thing is I’ve never had an issue with the light staying on after L1 cycle has finished. I will get started on a new edit of this video. 👍

    • @byrnemcneill
      @byrnemcneill 3 года назад +1

      Forgive my ignorance, but from what I’ve seen of this thermostat it seems to operate as a switching thermostat more than a dimming one.
      For example, if I plug my heat lamp into the temperature controlled outlet, it will switch it on and off once the temperature threshold is crossed rather than actually controlling the wattage being supplied to the bulb to maintain a certain heat. Switching an incandescent bulb on and off freaks out our blue tongue as well as reducing the bulb life.
      Any information about this appreciated, as the unit features will certainly consolidate the jumble of timers and switching thermostats under our enclosure.

    • @andreheise1170
      @andreheise1170 3 года назад +1

      @@byrnemcneill It's definitely dimming. Maybe there is a very old model in same housing that doesn't dim. My manual says: "Digital Dimming Thermostat Day & Night + Timer DTC-120"
      If the temperature exceeds the settings, then a dimming thermostat will switch completely off too. That's normal. It's trying to dim that "the goal" gets reached. In some situations this can't be archieved and the temperature gets so high that it can't be compensated with dimming only, so it has to turn off completely. Normally this happens when the thermostat got newly installed or when someone opens the enclosure for a longer period. After closing the enclosure the temperature gets to high by much.

    Hiya mate, thanks for the video
    Currently having an issue with mine for my beardie, was working perfect until a couple days ago though. For some reason, the bulb icon does not flash, which I believe means the timer is disabled, correct? Just means it won't turn on and off to get the temperature I want (for example I want 39 for the day and 25 at night) but it just stays at 39 degrees constantly and the heat lamp never turns off at night. Any ideas on how to get this working again? Sorry if this is worded wrong, let me know if you need me to explain further.

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  3 года назад

      It sounds like it could be a faulty unit. Double check that that the day timer is set correctly.
      Are you using a ceramic heat emitter or a clear basking light?
      Also there is no need to provide 25 degrees at night. I only give night heat if the temp drops below 8-10 degrees. They need a cool change to allow their metabolism to slow down.

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  2 года назад +1

      In terms of true dimming or pulse proportionate thermostats, I believe that they are far superior for any heat cord/tape/mat application.
      On/off thermostats have their suitable application in terms of reptile enclosures utilising daytime basking lights, such as bearded dragons. Using them in these enclosures is a perfect fail safe for the animal to not overheat.
      Thermostats such as microclimates and habistat, you are paying for the brand and reliability.
      In summary, I use these for most of my larger racks. I haven’t had an issue with using them.

      Thank you so much for the reply that is very helpful. I’m keeping an Eastern Blue Tongue Skink in a 250 L glass enclosure with a 100W ceramic heat emitter as the only source of heat and for the basking area. I have only had her for 4 months & so far (New Zealand winter) it has maintained a temperature of 29-31 degrees celsius on the hot side (38-40 degrees at the basking stone) & 24-26 degrees on the cool side - during the day. At night there is a natural drop of about 2 - 3 degrees while running the heated emitter 24 / 7. From the research I’ve done this is ok, but the nightly drop doesn’t seem to be enough and I don’t think it’ll be safe this summer.
      I have gone ahead and purchased the anycontrol brand as it seems to fit my needs & is well priced with good functionality.

      I just received my Anycontrol dimming thermostat. What I found quite interesting is that the instructions indicate that the DTC-120 uses PID techniques and reduces amps to control temperature. It then goes on to say that compared to an on off control mode the DCT-120 avoids unstable changes in temperature since it doesn’t switch on & off.
      While I hope this is true I’m a little suspect that this unit reduces amps to maintain temperature - since it is so well priced….

      This thermostat may not be the most appropriate for a chameleon. You will need something with the hydrostat to measure humidity. “Get your pet right” thermostat/hygrostat has three sockets; 1 for heat, 1 for humidity and one for timer.

  • @MrJkfixe

    I searched this vid, because I could not understand the understand what's the point for the timer "TO FROM" after you set the current time. The "TO FROM" L1 time is the time interval when the L1 socket is on? Does that mean that if I set L1 time from 07h00 to 20h00, it doesn't make the period between 20h00 and 07h00 night time, but instead, it turns the socket off like the L2 "TO FROM" does?
    This stat is great, it controls my DHP to the decimal degree, but I am not yet into the different timers nomenclature, it is a bit messy imo

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  3 года назад

      MrJkfixe the “T1” (To range) is when the socket is powered. In your example, if the T1 is set between 0700 and 2000 it is only powered during that time, the other hours won’t have any power provided and therefore no heat.
      If you want the heat to remain on, set the T1 timer for the full 24 hours (0000-2359). The day and night times will change the temperature ranges that you have set for those periods.

    • @MrJkfixe
      @MrJkfixe 3 года назад

      @@CookiesCritters that's what I understood while writing the comment, but I did that experiment, now at night, and setup a higher temperature for night time to see the change, and the dhp started heating as supposed to and surprise, the uv lamp that was on L2 came on with me only changing the L1 from the previous schedule to 00h00 to 23h59

    • @CookiesCritters
      @CookiesCritters  3 года назад

      MrJkfixe sounds like a faulty thermostat. I only use them now for rack systems, powering heat cord they function well. I’ve used them in the past for gecko display enclosures and 90% of them worked as they should. I think I had one that the daytime display lights wouldn’t turn off.

      Try to turn off the L2 setting! I was ready to return the thermostat as broken, but then I found really detailed instructions from the seller. Basically the L1 and L2 are two intervals you can set for the socket number two. You might want to turn on a ventilator from 8-11 in the morning (this would be L1), then turn off, and then on again from 16-19 (L2). If you set L1 to 0800-2000 and L2 to 2000-0800, it means the lamp will be turned on the whole 24 hours. If you want to have your lamp turned on only during the day, you have to set L1 to for example 0800-2000 and set L2 to to 1200-1200 (or any other time that is equal, because that turns off the function). It means that your lamp will only be turned on during the day and the heat mat (thats plugged into socket number one) will technically be turned on the whole day, but won't be actually heating anything, assuming your heat lamp gets hot enough to get the enclosure to the set day temperature.

    • @colinmorrison4659

      Thanks for your reply I think I understand what your saying. I have a heat bulb in l1 socket and heat mat in l2 socket. • @Rioshiny
      @Rioshiny 3 года назад

      @@colinmorrison4659 dont confuse the socket one and two with the L1 and L2 settings. You can only set the timer for the socket two. You can set it in two intervals - L1 and L2. So if you want the heat lamp on only during the day, plug it into the socket two and set the L1 for time when you want to have it turned on (for example from 8 am to 8 pm) and set L2 FROM and TO on the same time (for example 8 am and 8 am), because setting it on the same time turns that function off. You have to turn L2 off, because I assume you want the light to stay on the whole day and not in two intervals.
