  • The Dharma Bead Ball is artful, airy, and highly lightweight, resembling a honeycomb structure. It's super easy to master. You can make your first Dharma Bead Ball in an hour or less. In this video, I use sterling silver bugle beads measuring 6 mm long x 1.5 mm wide or so. Glass bugle beads will not work because they'll crack as you reinforce. Metal bugle beads are probably best. Possibly some strong plastic beads too. You'll need 108 bugle beads for 1 Dharma Ball.
The Backstory of the Dharma Bead Ball
I invented this structure by accident many years ago. But I've never taught it until now. Does it correspond to a known geometric structure? I'm not sure. It's made of 32 hexagons and 6 squares, stitched in 5 rows forming 38 interlocking cells. I used to call this the "Lantern" bead. But when I counted the number of beads, I got a surprise: there are exactly 108 beads. As it happens, 108 is one of my favorite numbers because it's the number of beads on a strand of Buddhist prayer beads. Why 108? Because in Buddhist dharma or teaching, there are 108 human passions that clutter one's path to enlightenment. Hinduism and Jainism also revere the number 108 for other reasons.
"Dharma" is a Sanskrit word meaning "path of righteousness" or "cosmic law and order" or more simply, "right conduct" or "teaching."
For these reasons, "Dharma Bead Ball" seems far more appropriate than "Lantern Bead Ball.”

Thank you for this tutorial. Ever since you showed us this bead in a previous video, I’ve been looking forward to seeing how it’s made. Now that it’s here, the construction looks clever and easy. Now, to find appropriate beads…. Thanks again for this great video.

Thank You!! Your demonstration was very easy to follow and I really appreciate your willingness to show the 'sticky' spots where it's easy to get into trouble while assembling -- gives me the confidence to give it a try for myself. Again, Thanks so much for sharing 🙏🙏🙏

Hi there, @chrisem79! Thank you for your kind words! I'm really glad to hear that you feel my demonstration is easy to follow. That's what I'm trying for. I love sharing possible trouble spots, as you said. If I can save a beader from making even one of the mistakes I've made over the years, it makes my day. Please stop by again soon - more videos will go live next week. In the meantime, Happy Beading.

Lovely tutorial! Where can we get the cap? It makes the piece so fashionable! Thank you for sharing this great piece!

Hi @marysisti9979 - actually, I soldered the cap myself using a sterling silver disk that I dapped into a dome - and topped with a sterling silver jumpring. So it's a custom element. Similar elements can probably be found online - but I'm not sure where. I'm sorry I can't be of more help on this. In any case, I'm glad you like this stucture.

Thank you very much, @tishsmiddy! I'm glad you like this structure - I invented it sort of by accident - which just shows how much is possible in this amazing field! I'm just about to get back to making tutorials...
